Chapter 5
Bailey entered the ICU. Wilson was already there having taken the labs the results were waiting.
"It's better not great but better"
"So" Jo asked eagerly wanting to wake the peds surgeon up.
"So, we don't wake her today but tomorrow is looking promising" Bailey decided, Jo groaned,
"We need to wake her up before 1700 tonight," she begged, Bailey frowned confused
"It's when Sofia goes to the airport, she deserves the chance to say goodbye." Jo had been filled in by Alex she also knew Bailey was aware she'd been deprived of seeing her daughter for months at a time.
"Repeat the labs at 1400 I'll review them then" Bailey ordered, Jo's face lit up, "I make no promises," she reminded the intern.
Sofia skipped into the hospital holding her Uncle Alex's hand. She was going to say morning to her mommy then go to day care to draw her the best getting better picture ever. Alex had promised her she'd get to give her mommy the picture before she went to the airport and home with Mamma. They'd even been to Mommy's house today to pack up her stuff, Sofia helping to pack a bag for mommy, frozen, frozen 2, tangled, finding nemo, her penguin she got from the zoo. Sofia had even leant her mom her best colouring book and crayons, and hoped she didn't colour all the pictures in. Alex and Meredith had packed more practical things, phone chargers, pyjamas, pants, socks, clothes. Maggie and Amelia had dropped the rest of the kids off.
When Alex and Sofia arrived at the ICU Bailey was still there,
"Sofia" she smiled,
"Auntie Bailey" Sofia ran over hugging her Auntie, all of the day care kids called the parents of their friends Auntie or Uncle.
"My little Sofia" Bailey hugged Sofia tightly,
"It's Doctor TJ" Sofia replied using the nickname Alex had given her, with the lab coat he'd nicked from Peds. Kids loved playing dress up, so they always had spare white coats for the kids who wanted to dress like doctors.
"Sorry Doctor TJ" Bailey raised an eyebrow at Karev asking him to explain TJ.
"Torres Junior"
"Doctor TJ" Sofia corrected,
"She is like Callie's mini me" Bailey whispered not sure if she was impressed or horrified.
"I need to give mommy her medicine" Sofia ordered ignoring Bailey, instead climbing on her mom's bed very carefully and kissing her forehead.
"Definitely like Torres" Alex agreed. "Right let's get you to day care, I think you have some pictures to draw and colour" he ordered, "One more kiss for mommy" Sofia nodded giving her mom one more kiss. Uncle Alex was right she had some serious colouring and drawing to do.
Bailey reviewed the bloods; they were better not normally where she'd like the infection markers to be before waking a patient, but she knew this wasn't an ordinary scenario.
"Let's reduce the sedation" she ordered; she might have to re sedate that evening, but the Peds Doctor deserved to say goodbye to her little girl.
1600 came the sedation had lightened Sofia was due up soon and all Arizona had to do was wake up.
Bailey noticed her heart rate picking up,
"That's it, Arizona you're okay" she held her friends' hand, as Meredith snuck in wanting to be there as she woke.
"No" Arizona began fighting, even with the tube in they could tell she was crying no. Escaping Bailey hand she quickly lifted her arm grabbing her tube and pulling hard.
"Sofia" she moaned as soon as it was free, "Where's Sofia?" she coughed on the fluids and wheezed slightly
"In day care, Alex is bringing her up in a minute" Bailey explained as Jo inserted nasal specs into her nose.
"No, she can't be in day care I need to look after her I need" Arizona lifted the covers intent on getting out of bed and going to day care to collect her daughter. Bailey was there
"You are on the ICU, you were bordering on multi organ failure and death, if Grey had brought you in even an hour later." Bailey shuddered,
"What day is it?" Arizona asked still panicked, she hadn't been that unwell had she?
"Tuesday," Arizona began crying, full on sobs. She'd missed nearly all the time with her daughter, Callie was going to kill her, no worse, Callie was never going to let her have Sofia again, not after this week.
"I'm sorry I know you had Sofia" Bailey rubbed her arm,
"I miss her so much," Arizona confessed, "When can I be discharged, I have to drop her at the airport?" Bailey laughed,
"If it wasn't for your daughter, you wouldn't even be awake right now" Bailey explained, "Your appendix burst, you were septic, your kidneys failing, your lungs and heart both showed strain. We nearly lost you Arizona, it was so close" Bailey was getting emotional,
"Sorry, but I need to get out at least get to the airport, it's important that Callie sees I have Sofia, that I have looked after Sofia" Arizona was agitated, still trying to climb out of bed.
"Robbins, I will sedate you if I have too," Bailey threatened.
"I'll sign myself out" Arizona threatened in return. Bailey almost allowed her; confident she wouldn't even make it out the room without help.
"Hey, I brought Dr TJ for a consult" Alex barged in,
"Mommy" Sofia ran in carefully climbing on the bed and hugging Arizona carefully.
"Baby," Arizona cried hugging her tightly, "I've missed you so much" she peppered kisses onto her daughter's hair.
"I brought you some drawings." Alex began presented the multitude of paintings and drawings Sofia had done.
"This is you and me and we are riding a zebra, like at the zoo, and I have my tiger and you have your penguin, and we are on the rainbow road." Sofia explained, Arizona nodded feeling emotional. Sofia's drawing abilities had improved since she had last seen her.
"And then I drew this one, and we are eating ice cream with Zola, Bailey and Ellis, and I have chocolate and you have strawberry, and Zola has bubble gum, Bailey has chocolate like me and Ellis has vanilla and I drew a unicorn and a pirate but they don't have ice cream"
"Wow it's really good, I think I have an artist for a daughter," Arizona commented, "You are so talented, can we put it up on the wall Jo?" she asked, "It makes me feel so much better seeing them. Did you have fun with Zola, Bailey and Ellis?" she asked guessing correctly Meredith had taken her in
"Uh huh I slept in Zola's room, and we played princess and got to go to day care with Bailey while Zola went to school. Bailey and I drew and played castles."
"Wow that sounds like fun, which princess were you?"
"I was Anna and Zola was Elsa cus Zola is older, we let Bailey be Olaf and Ellis was Sven but she can't really play yet." Sofia explained. Alex kept watch on the clock as they carried on talking, as 1720 came and Meredith arrived Alex knew it was time to leave. If they didn't get Sofia to the airport with how Callie had been he was worried she'd call the police, accuse them of kidnapping.
"Robbins we should go if we are going to make the 1800 flight" Alex nodded at the clock, they all left the room leaving Arizona and Sofia alone.
"Sofia it's time to go home to Mamma,"
"But I want to stay with you and Zola" Sofia complained, "I miss you in New York and you need kisses" Sofia pouted.
"I know I miss you too, so much, you're my heart, my soul and my everything, you make your Mama happy, and I want you both really happy." Arizona was crying.
"Are you happy Mommy?" Sofia asked, Arizona cried even harder she didn't want to lie to her daughter, Sofia was incredibly perceptive.
"I'm happiest when you and Mama are happy," Arizona replied, "Now I need you to go to New York and be happy"
"Will I see you at thanksgiving?" Sofia asked,
"I don't think so baby, I think you're going to you Abdula's house in Miami, it will be really warm, and they'll be lots of food" Arizona stroked Sofia's hair
"What about Christmas?" Sofia demanded, Arizona chocked back a sob,
"Penny's parents have invited you to go there, they live in Maine, and they'll be lots of snow and presents" Arizona promised.
"But I don't want to see Penny's parents I want to see you and grandpa and grandma," Sofia protested. Arizona was fully sobbing now,
"I know baby, but Mama needs you" Arizona was hugging her daughter tightly,
"But I need you mommy," Sofia cried, Arizona rocked her,
"I need you too my beautiful baby girl"
"Robbins, we need to go" Alex stuck his head in. Arizona knew he was right,
"Okay Sofia, kiss goodbye," she ordered,
"No, I don't want to go" Sofia cried, clinging onto Arizona, Karev sighed he hated being the bad cop as he went over lifting her up.
"I know but your Mama misses you and we got to go or we will be late"
"I love you Sofia" Arizona called watching as her crying daughter was carried out of the room and out if her life.
As Sofia's cries went quieter as she got further away Bailey reappeared
"I have something to help you sleep, if you want" She offered concerned about Arizona's observations and emotional state. Arizona nodded she needed to sleep until Sofia was gone, until Sofia was in New York, and she couldn't kidnap her take her away and never return her. She felt the medicine take effect feeling the relief as her medicine sent her into a dreamless sleep.
