Chapter 7

Sesshomaru finished his cigarette and came back into the living room from the fire escape. Koga could feel him glaring at him so he looked down at his watch.

"Would you look at the time? I should get going. You know, Ayame needs our quality time and all that crap."

"Yeah...we should leave." Sango agreed, tapping both Miroku and Hojo on the shoulder as their gazes stayed glued to the television.

"Aww...babe, they're giving Predator. I haven't seen it in forever." Miroku whined.

Sango raised a brow and shook her head. "You own the movie on DVD, numbnut."

"Yeah...but it's different when it's on TV." Miroku exclaimed. Hojo nodded beside him.

"Ok, Kagome...thanks for the grub..." Koga smiled, still feeling Sesshomaru watch him. He pulled Kagome into a quick hug and turned for the door.

"What are you smiling for, Koga?" Kagome asked, tilting her head at him suspiciously.

" No reason." he smirked and turned toward Sesshomaru to shake his hand. " Sesshomaru...always a pleasure."

Sesshomaru gave Koga a firm handshake, his eyes fixing on his. "The pleasure, Koga...is all mine."

Koga winced hearing his knuckles crack. "Right..."

Miroku and Hojo could see the discomfort on Koga's face and decided not to shake Sesshomaru's hand. They gave a friendly nod and wave instead.

"Kagome, see you later." Miroku said while Sango pushed everyone out the door.

Kagome stood in the doorway as Sesshomaru grabbed all empty cups and took it to the kitchen. Sango paused in the hallway and turned back to Kagome.

"Listen, my brother said he needs to talk to you."

"Kohaku?" Kagome cocked a brow.

Sango scoffed. " Who else? Miroku did you know I had another brother?" Sango looked toward the bottom of the steps. Kagome rolled her eyes.

Miroku looked up and scratched his head. " I dunno...your mom...she does get around..." Miroku looked toward Koga and Hojo and began to laugh.

"What did you say?" Sango yelled. Miroku pushed Koga and Hojo to run downstairs.

Sango turned back to Kagome and rubbed her temples. "Look, he wants to come and chat with you. I have no idea why. I think it's about Inuyasha. That kid has been praising Inuyasha and his music. I was hoping you could talk some sense into him."

"Well, okay...give him my cellphone number and tell him to call."

"Will do." Sango shouted as she went downstairs.

Kagome closed the door and went back inside. She sighed as she helped Sesshomaru clean the house. After she was done tidying up the living room, she joined Sesshomaru in the kitchen.

"Oh god, I do apologize for my friends. They can be...a handful." Kagome smirked as she turned around and shook her head. "Sango is annoying, isn't she? Trying to get me to date so bad."

"Oh?" Sesshomaru snuck a curious look at her as he washed his hands.

" Yeah..." Kagome tilted her head trying to sense what he was thinking or feeling. He didn't say anything else and she sighed. "Oh...Koga finished your caviar accidently, sorry. I'll buy another one."

"It is fine." Sesshomaru said, wiping his hands with a dry towel. He leaned against the counter, crossed his arms then looked at her.

Feeling awkward that he was just staring, she ambled toward him and started adjusting the chairs, pushing them into the table though they couldn't be any closer. "So…I'll make sure to do my part tomorrow."

"Do what part?" he said, his face becoming stern.

"You know, me impersonating Kikyo, did you forget?"

"I don't think that is a good idea. Right now, there is too much of a spotlight on them." Sesshomaru said as he began to walk out of the kitchen. Kagome followed behind him and scoffed.

"What? Come on, we've already been waiting months. We need to get this over and done with."

Sesshomaru rubbed his face, rolled his eyes and waved her off as he entered his room and grabbed his jacket. "Do what you want then."

"What's wrong with you?" Kagome asked, noticing the tension bunching up in his eyebrows.

"Nothing is wrong." He replied, making a conscious effort to look unaffected.

"Where...are you going?" Kagome asked, as he put on his jacket.

Sesshomaru passed her and looked down at her as he came within inches from her face.

"I wasn't aware that you were my keeper."

Not liking his tone, she took a step back and scoffed.

"It was just a question...fine. I don't give a shit, jump in front of fuckin' traffic." she whirled around, stomped toward her room and slammed the door shut.

Sesshomaru dropped his head back, sighed and walked toward her door. He pondered for a moment as he went to knock then changed his mind and left the apartment.

Kagome pressed her back against her bedroom door and bit the insides of her cheek. She just didn't understand him. One day, he was sweet and charming and the next day he was the same callous insensitive demon he was in High school. They were always one step ahead and fifty steps back. All she was trying to do was work up the courage to ask him to the black and white event. She looked toward the other side of the room and saw the dress laying on her bed. Staring at the black asymmetrical-open back, low plunging neckline dress with a side slit going up the thigh, she sighed. What was she thinking asking someone like him to this event?

Don't fall for him, Kagome. Sango's words repeated in her mind. He's just like Inuyasha. No, he's not like Inuyasha! He's worse. He's an asshole! Ugh, that was it. She was tired of trying. She'd leave him alone. If he didn't want to be her friend, then she would respect his wishes. Their relationship was just business. He is her employer and roommate, that's it! Yet, she couldn't understand why this saddened her. She didn't want that to be it; she wanted something more.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Sesshomaru entered the gate of his father's mansion and parked the car in front of the entrance. The staff looked through the windows, over bushes, behind trees and gasping at each other that he was there. Zipping up his coat, Sesshomaru sauntered up the driveway, one of the butlers scurried to open the door for him. He didn't want to stay long, just to make a presence so his dad wouldn't get the army to search for him. Sentry and waitstaff bowed at him as he cut across the hallway toward the parlor where he knew his father would be. He stopped one of the staff members, an old maid who doted on him since he was a child and handed her the envelope of Inuyasha's credit cards along with a generous tip.

As Sesshomaru gained closer to the parlor, the muscles in his face tightened. Two other people inhabited the parlor along with his father. Their unwelcomed scented infiltrated his nose. Kikyo and Inuyasha. Appearing into the archway that led to the parlor, all three of them gazed at him with bewilderment.

"Sesshomaru, thank heavens. " his father hurried over to him with a wide and relieved smile. He pulled him into a tight hug, and he flickered his gaze at Inuyasha and Kikyo. "It's been months since we've seen you."

"Father…" Sesshomaru forced himself out of his father's grasp. It was difficult to stay in his father's company without becoming irritated. After Inuyasha's mother's death, his once ruthless father had grieved so hard, his will and mental state withered and died along with her and although he was still young and in good health, he was borderline senile. He respected his father deeply but couldn't bare watch his great and terrible father at his most debilitating moment. To refrain his temper from showing, he made a conscious effort not to acknowledge Kikyo and Inuyasha.

"Have you heard, Sesshomaru? The authorities came in last night and reprimanded your brother as if he were some savage! Fortunately, he had a great alibi but there is an imposter at hand!"

"So, I've heard." Sesshomaru said, peeking a glance at his half-breed brother.

Inuyasha couldn't meet his brother's gaze. He kept his attention on the swirling liquid moving around in his coffee cup. Kikyo grinned, putting her arm around Inuyasha and casting a mocking grin at Sesshomaru.

"Kikyo, you must be so happy to see Sesshomaru. " his father exclaimed. "Sesshomaru, she's been missing you so much, she's been sleeping over consecutively waiting for your arrival, isn't that right, Inuyasha?"

"I'm sure." Sesshomaru smirked at Kikyo and she scowled.

"Sesshomaru, please sit. You act as if you're not staying long." his father chuckled. "Tottosai, please get Sesshomaru something to drink." his father ordered the butler. The butler bowed and looked at Sesshomaru.

" I'm not staying, father." Sesshomaru shook his head at the butler. " I came to tell you to stop having your men follow me. I do not appreciate it."

"Well, how else am I supposed to know where you are staying at? You won't even tell me." his father crossed his arms and stared at Inuyasha and Kikyo for backup. Kikyo and Inuyasha both looked away not wanting to get into it.

"Father, with all due respect, it isn't any of your concern. I've only come this once as a courtesy. At this moment, I wish you to respect my privacy."

His father bowed his head hurtfully and nodded.

"Of course, son. My apologies then. I'm sure you are doing fine then?" his father set down his tea. " Well then…I shall retire for the night. " he walked out of the living room and disappeared into the dark hallway.

Inuyasha glared toward Sesshomaru as he turned to leave. He sprung up from the couch and bolted down the hallway to catch up to him. Sesshomaru could feel his brother getting closer and he hoped, for his father's sake, that he would stop.

"Hey!" Inuyasha barked. "That's no way to talk to dad!"

Sesshomaru snapped over his shoulder. " Respect, little brother, is not something you should try to lecture me about."

" I'm still talking to you!" Inuyasha shouted as he followed Sesshomaru out toward his car. Sesshomaru opened the door and Inuyasha slammed it shut.

"Inuyasha...know your place. My patience is low today, I am in no mood." Sesshomaru glowered. "Step aside."

Inuyasha crossed his arms. "No! We gotta talk. This is between you and me."

Sesshomaru took a deep breath in, looking back at the house in case his father was nosily looking out the window. He reached to open the car door when Inuyasha gripped his arm.

" Did you hear me!"

Sesshomaru growled as he gripped Inuyasha's hand, punched him in the rib, lifted him into the air then slammed him against the hood of his car. Inuyasha scrambled to his feet as he slid off the car and attempted to lunge at Sesshomaru, but he was grappled at the neck by his brother's hand. Sesshomaru curled his hand into a fist and started to punch Inuyasha repeatedly in the face. Staff members froze in their respective spots, not daring to stop the fight.

Inuyasha swung his arm and Sesshomaru blocked it with his elbow as he threw another punch to his face.

"Sesshomaru?" a small voice said and he looked up to see his adopted sister Rin staring over the balcony in complete horror.

At that moment when Rin distracted him, Inuyasha was able to throw a punch. He hit him on the right side of his cheek, his metal studded ring tearing his skin. Sesshomaru wrapped his hands around Inuyasha's neck and banged his head against his car door. He was about to throw one last punch that could potentially put his brother in a coma when he looked back up at Rin.

"What are you doing?" she mouthed quietly, clutching her hand over her chest.

Sesshomaru released Inuyasha and threw his limp body to the side as he got into the car and drove away.

Inuyasha peeked through his swollen bloody eyes as his brother made off like a savage bandit of the night, wondering what got into him. Delayed anger? After four months?

"Rin, go inside. Everything is alright…" Inuyasha said, forcing himself to stand up. Staff members rushed over to help him, but he waved his hands that he was alright.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Sesshomaru entered his apartment in hopes Kagome was sleeping so she wouldn't berate him with endless questions that would only further anger him. But it was just a little past 9pm and she was awake, sitting on the couch. She turned to him and jerked her head back, noticing the bruise and cut on his cheek. Her lips parted to ask but then thought against it as he turned down the hallway to the bathroom. She wasn't going to ask him. He wouldn't tell her anyway.

Sesshomaru inspected his face in the bathroom mirror as he gripped the edges of the sink. He looked down at his hands, his knuckles were bleeding. He gripped the sink tighter still feeling his body shake with rage. Trying to calm down, he turned the shower on and reasoned with himself to calm down. He went for one reason and that was to give one of the staff members the envelope with Inuyasha's credit cards to put back in his room. The plan was to make him look like a liar. He knew Inuyasha would have an alibi so that would clear him from the police...but if his credit cards were to show in the room after being claimed 'stolen', there would be questioning from Kikyo.

Sesshomaru undressed himself and jumped into the shower. The look from Rin's face was unbearable. As was Kagome's and his fathers. Why did he do this? Why did he do these things to people he cared about? Wait, he didn't care for Kagome. Or did he? He wasn't going to deny it. He did care for Kagome. He cared about what she thought and how she was feeling. The feelings were platonic. Nothing of what that wolf was trying to imply. How he disliked that wolf, Koga and his implications. He watched as blood trickled down his fingertips into a bloody cyclone down the drain. He needed to rest. To stop thinking for just a moment and be taken away in the land of reveries. Though no matter how much he reasoned with himself, he couldn't ignore the hurt he caused Kagome. She was being nice to him and he was doing the opposite. If he was being honest with himself, it started at dinner, with Sango trying to set her up on a date. The idea of Kagome dating again made his body tense up followed by an ache in his chest. When he finished up, he wrapped a towel around his waist and walked out of the bathroom. Kagome had just passed him to go to bed and without thinking, he grabbed her wrist. She turned toward him with wide eyes.

" I...apologize for how I acted earlier. It was uncalled for. The anger I carried wasn't directed at you." he said looking down at his hand over her wrist. Her skin was soft, and he had the strongest urge to stroke his thumb across her hand. He immediately let her go and entered his room.

The days passed and Kagome grew impatient. The black and white event was tomorrow and she still didn't have a date. The funny thing was, she had multiple offers in the last two weeks and turned each and every one of them down. She wasn't stupid, she knew why she was doing it. Because there was some small, moronic and pathetic part of her that thought, just maybe, her uncouth and emotionally unavailable roommate would ask her.

"Hey, Kagome." Koura greeted.

Kagome snapped out of her daze as she leaned against the copy machine and looked over to her. "Hey, Koura, what's up?"

"Nothing much, can't wait for tomorrow night. It's going to be a blast. You're going, right?" Koura said as she set the stack of folders down.

" Um...I'm not sure." Kagome looked back at the copy machine and fell into another trance.

"You have a date?" Koura smiled hoping she'd get the answer most people in the office was waiting for.

"No... I don't." Kagome rolled her eyes at her piteous situation. She shrugged then said, "Maybe I'll just go alone."

"No! A pretty thing like you should have a date. Well, who knows...you might have one today." Koura said, her tone cheerful and optimistic.

"Yeah...right." Kagome said as she grabbed the papers from the machine. " Well, see ya."

" Alright then." Koura smiled as she watched Kagome go back to her desk.

"Hmmm...do I sense someone trying to manipulate the situation?" a throaty voice sounded over Koura's shoulder. " I thought we weren't supposed to—"

"Shut up, Hiten. I was not doing anything." Koura pouted her lips. " I feel bad...I can sense she's hurt."

"Your Spidey senses are tingling again?" Hiten teased.

Koura sighed. "Idiot. Listen, if she doesn't have a date by tomorrow afternoon, I want you to ask her, ok?"

"but...isn't that manipulating the situation?" Hiten asked as he looked around not wanting anyone to hear them.

"No... If you wait till the end, it won't be. We still have another week after the event for the deadline of this bet. If he didn't ask her out for the event. It'll be ok, besides, maybe he just needs a little encouragement. You know, something to make him jealous."

"What makes you think he will get jealous?" Hiten cocked a brow as they walked back to their cubicle.

"Demon or not, he's a guy. No way they've lived together for this long and not develop some feelings for each other."

"Whatever you say." Hiten said.

Koura smiled. "Trust me. It's what I say."

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Kagome sulked as she and Sesshomaru entered the apartment. Another late night. Another disappointment. The party was tomorrow, and he still hadn't asked her out. Why was she making this into a big deal? Perhaps she was reading it all wrong. There was something there, between them, or so she thought, that was more than platonic. She'd catch him checking her out, staring at her when he thought she wasn't paying any mind. But she also acknowledged how she reacted to him. The slightest touch made her entire body tingle to the core. It surpassed his insanely good looks. When he was around, everything felt perfect and safe and something yearned inside her for more. They both changed out of their work clothes and went about unwinding from the workday. As Kagome made herself a drink, Sesshomaru could sense a shift in her mood. He sensed it throughout the day; something was bothering her.

"Is something the matter?" he asked.

Kagome met his gaze, slightly annoyed, then shook her head. "Nope."

She closed her bedroom door and he sighed as he went into his, both retiring into their rooms for the night.

The next day, Kagome awoke to the sound of her annoying cellphone ringtone.

"I have to fuckin' change this thing..." she groaned from under the covers as she reached out her hand from underneath the blanket and grabbed the cellphone off the nightstand beside her bed. " Yeah?" she breathed heavily into the phone.

"Hey, Kagome." said a young voice on the other line.

"Who is this?" Kagome continued to groan as she stared at her clock. " 6:45am? Oh my god...somebody better be dying. Who is this and why are you calling so damn early?"

"Kagome, it's me, Kohaku."

" Kohaku?" Kagome furrowed her brows as she forced herself up. "What's wrong, did something happen?"

"No, nothing happened." He answered followed by a lingering silence.

"Um...ok...so why'd you call so early?" Kagome asked, throwing the covers off of her.

" I kind of wanted to reach you before you went to work. You do work today, right?" he asked.

"Yes, I do..." Kagome said in a suspicious tone. "Why?"

"Well, is it okay if I stop by. I need to tell you something."

"There's an event tonight, Kohaku. Is it something you can tell Sango?"

" No!" he snapped which caused Kagome to open her eyes wider. "I'm sorry...I mean I can't. She's been too bitchy lately to even pay attention to anything I have to say."

Kagome nodded. Sango was acting bitchier than usual. "Okay, well, listen...I have an event at 8pm so try to come before 7pm."

"Ok, cool. Hey, can I bring a friend?" Kohaku added.

"Sure, Kohaku. Now let me go. I need sleep!" Kagome growled.

"Sorry..." he laughed. " Ok…later, Kagome."

An hour later, she had gotten dressed and went into the kitchen and made herself some breakfast. She was upset to slacking off on the vendetta she and Sesshomaru worked hard on devising. She hadn't a chance to impersonate Kikyo yet and she had taken Sesshomaru's advice on waiting a while. Sesshomaru was already at the table in a daze, smoking a cigarette. He snuck a side glance at Kagome, who didn't even say her usual morning greetings. He went back to staring straight at the wall and flicked the ash of his cigarette into the ashtray. Kagome sat beside him and began to eat her cereal. She brought the box to the table to read the back of it. Usually, they had cheesy games on the back that she played to surpass the time.

"You're quiet..." Sesshomaru said, studying her demeanor. His gaze fell down to her lips as he took another pull of his cigarette.

"Mmhmm, is that a problem?" Kagome kept her attention on the back of the cereal box.

" I suppose not. " Sesshomaru took another drag. " How'd you sleep?"

" What do you care?" Kagome peeled her gaze off the cereal box and looked at him. "Now you want to make small talk yet when I do, you bite my head off?"

Sesshomaru raised a brow and bowed his head. Clearly, she still didn't forgive him though he apologized last night. Putting out his cigarette he stood up.

"We should be on our way."

"You're not even going to try, are you?" Kagome looked up.

Sesshomaru stared down at her and extended his arms out in disbelief.

"I apologized last night. What else do you want from me?"

" Nothing..." Kagome dropped her spoon into her bowl and got up. " Nothing at all." she brought her bowl to the sink and walked out of the kitchen. He wasn't going to ask her. She should just let it go. They got ready and left for work.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Kagome and Sesshomaru didn't say much to each other at work. Kagome kept herself busy with spreadsheets, emails and occasional articles about current events. Anything to keep her mind off her clueless roommate/boss. Sesshomaru couldn't focus. He couldn't stand it when Kagome was upset with him but aside from apologizing, he didn't know what else to do.

Naraku and Shurran walked side by side, entering Sesshomaru's office. Kagome peeked through her peripherals wondering what they wanted.

"Lord Sesshomaru, a word?" Naraku said as they stopped in front of his desk.

Sesshomaru nodded not meeting their eyes and sat down.

"We've taken notice that certain accounts may have been entered incorrectly? We see that certain accounts have been withdrawn prematurely and penalties have been waived. Might this be a clerical error?" Shurran cast a scowl over her shoulder at Kagome.

Sesshomaru looked up at Naraku and Shurran then at Kagome.

"They are correct."

"Correct? But my Lord..." protested Shurran.

" They are...correct." Sesshomaru said again with a final tone.

" Yes, Sir." Shurran bowed her head then looked reluctantly at Naraku. " Sir, another reminder, the black and white event is tonight."

"I am aware." He said then looked up at them with an annoyed expression. "Is that all?"

" Yes...sir." Shurran looked at Naraku and left. Naraku stood in front of Sesshomaru and looked back at Kagome.

"Is there anything else, Mr. Onigumo?" Sesshomaru asked.

"Sir, I come to acquire permission to ask Ms. Higurashi to the black and white event." Naraku cocked a brow, flashing a boyish grin.

Sesshomaru paused for a moment, glanced at Kagome as his fingers fidgeted at his keyboard. He cleared his throat, blinked and went back to his computer screen.

" Why do you require my permission?"

" Sir, I wanted to ask if it was alright?" Naraku answered.

" Ms. Higurashi is perfectly capable of answering your question without my consent." Sesshomaru glared at him acridly.

" Yes, my Lord." Naraku bowed as he turned towards Kagome's desk.

Sesshomaru looked back down at his papers and tried to focus back on work. He drummed his fingers on the table, looking at Naraku leaning over Kagome's desk.

"Hello, Ms. Higurashi." said Naraku.

"Mr. Onigumo..." Kagome said in an uninterested tone. "Is there something I can help you with?"

"Yes...there is, as a matter of fact. I would like you to join me, as my date, for the Black and White event." Naraku looked at her smugly, as if she already answered yes to his proposal.

"I'm sorry." Kagome forced a smile. "I must decline."

"You won't regret it, Ms. Higurashi. I ask you to reconsider." Naraku said, trying to keep his smug grin but it was slowly melting into a frown.

"Really. I'm flattered...just not interested. " Kagome went back to the computer. " Now if you'll excuse me..."

"Most women would love to be in your shoes, to be asked by such an honorable fellow to the most biggest event of the year." Naraku scoffed

Honorable? Kagome thought. Hardly. Kagome smiled wide as she blinked innocently. " Well, then go ask them."

"You shou—"

"Mr. Onigumo, " Sesshomaru said, startling both Kagome and Naraku. " I believe she has already answered you."

" Yes, Sir." Naraku tittered then bowed his head. "Can't say I didn't try."

Naraku walked away and Kagome looked toward Sesshomaru's desk. Her lips twitched into a grateful grin.

"Thanks…" she uttered under her breath as she went back to entering data.

Sesshomaru rubbed his thumb across his index thoughtfully as his gaze bounced between her and his laptop.

"Are…you hungry?" he asked, feeling a sense of discomfort. He realized it was rejection he was dreading.

"Famished." She looked up from her computer, a slight blush cutting across her cheeks.

"Would you like to order in or eat out?" he asked opening his drawer to get the keys to his car.

" I prefer to eat out..." she said, standing up and grabbing her blazer.

When they walked down the hallway, they noticed how quiet everything was. Everyone was watching them carefully as they made their way toward the elevator. As if on cue, everyone looked away and went back to work. Kagome looked around suspiciously as she and Sesshomaru entered the elevator.

Sesshomaru took Kagome to a fancy Italian restaurant by the water. The staff seemed to acknowledge Sesshomaru's status as they were extra attentive since their arrival. They had the best table by the water and didn't bother asking any of them for ID, though, it didn't seem anyone would dare ask Sesshomaru for ID.

Kagome tried to keep it classy, refraining the drool from leaking out of her mouth as hot plates of delicious entrees were carried to their table. Sesshomaru sipped his wine and watched Kagome as she observed the restaurant in awe.

"I couldn't help overhear you declining Naraku's invitation to the Black and White." He said, surprised at his unforeseen initiative to break the silence.

"Oh...yeah...the guy is just all out creepy, you know?" Kagome grimaced.

Sesshomaru shot a partial grin and nodded as he brought his wine glass to his mouth. "I thought you had wanted to go."

Kagome felt her heart thump against her chest. " Y-yeah but um...I didn't want to go with him." She muttered as she reached for her glass of wine and took in massive gulps to ease her nerves.

"I see. " he said as the violinists began to play. " Did you have someone in mind?" he asked, his curiosity driving him mad. A gentle breeze from the water passed them, sending a musky scent of Kagome's perfume up his nose. It soothed him beyond comprehension. He imagined what lucky bachelor Kagome had in mind and realized he begrudged this mystery person. Should he ask her to this event? But how would that come across? Would it reveal that he was interested?

"I sort of thought about askin—"

" Good Afternoon, My name is Giorggo, I will be your server! Might I interest you in-"

Their server went on a prolonged spiel about the specials, commenting on which was the best and suggesting another bottle of wine. After they placed their order, they were left in an uncomfortable silence once again.

"Sesshomaru..." Kagome started timidly then peered at him with her misty grey eyes. They zeroed in on his and he could feel his mouth become dry. "What happened last night?"

Sesshomaru noticed she looked down at his hands and he pulled them back under the table.

"Your face. I know you heal quick but I saw it last night. There was a cut and a bruise."

Sesshomaru bowed his head. He should tell her, he thought.

"I went to visit my father." he said.

"Your father did that?" Kagome squeaked, then lowered her head in disbelief.

" No.." Sesshomaru shook his head. " I got into with…Inuyasha."

"Inuyasha?" Kagome's voice wavered. Sesshomaru noticed the vulnerability in her tone when she said his name and this made his angry. Did she still have feelings for him?

" Why…. why did you guys get into a fight?" Kagome stammered.

"It's not important." Sesshomaru murmured, taking another sip of his wine to ease the rising anger from unleashing.

"What was Inuyasha doing at the mansion?"

"He lives there. " Sesshomaru forced out not wanting to speak of him anymore.

" Why does he live there?"

"I haven't the slightest." Sesshomaru snapped at her. "If you care so much, why don't you ask him?"

"Can you tone down the attitude please?" she said. "I was just…making conversation. I don't really care."

Sesshomaru pressed his lips tightly and looked away toward the water, feeling a stab of guilt for the way he blew up on her. He really needed to figure out what was irritating him.

Kagome decided to change the subject. "So, I guess you're not going to this black and white event, huh?"

"I 'm not sure..." Sesshomaru said shortly as the waiter arrived with their food. "I…don't have anyone to go with."

"Oh..." Kagome murmured.

Sesshomaru's leg shook as his thumb rubbed the side of his wine glass. He wanted to ask her, he did. Why couldn't he though? Why couldn't he make the first move? Did he ever make the first move? How did he and Kikyo come about? Did she ask him or did he ask her? He frowned trying to remember. "Listen, I had wanted to ask..."he started but his lips froze right afterward. What was he so afraid of? Rejection?

Kagome looked up, her heart hammering against her chest. Why was she feeling that way? Was she anticipating for him to ask her? Yes, she admitted. She was and as she leaned forward into the table, provoking the conversation to continue when he hesitated.

"What had you wanted to ask?"

Sesshomaru tried to continue but couldn't. He opened his mouth slightly and looked back down. " Nothing, never mind." This couldn't happen, he thought. What was he thinking? He couldn't go ahead and ask her to the event, that would be a date, would it not? Then further questioning of their relationship would rise. Where would they stand? Etc. This was his brother's ex for crying out loud!

Kagome's heart felt like it stopped and had felt a pang of hurt. She decided to shrug it off and just be brave for once.

"Sesshomaru...I was thinking-perhaps, um…you and I could go together." She said, biting her lip and taking a few more gulps of wine.

Sesshomaru was taken aback from her question. He had not expected her to ask. He frowned. He was supposed to ask, not her. Though, she asked and he felt a wave of relief, flattery and something else. Was he the one she had in mind? He hated assumptions and he absolutely despised ambiguity. But what he really feared overall, was expecting this to become something more and for it not to happen. He couldn't bear that happening to him.

"As much as I'd like to, Kagome...I don't think that is a good idea." he declined.

Kagome felt a sharp pain in her chest as her breath caught in her throat. For some reason, she hadn't expected him to shoot her down. It just didn't make sense. She really thought he felt the same way.

"Why…isn't it a good idea?" she asked, most curiously.

"I…am your employer. It…it wouldn't look right."

"Oh…" she said, brushing her top lip over the bottom and nodded. "No big deal. I, um…understand."

Sesshomaru could see the look of disappointment on her face and instant regret seeped in. She didn't say much afterward when their entrees arrived.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

"Shhh, ok here they come!" whispered a Koura to everyone else. Everyone pretended to be working as they glanced to see Kagome and Sesshomaru entering the office. They both walked quietly and entered his office and closed the door.

Koura's smile faded and looked at everyone else.

"He didn't ask her..." she said sadly.

Everyone expelled groans from their cubicle.

"This is driving me mad, I put a lot of money into this." said one man. "My wife is going to kill me if I don't get it back."

The woman next to him nodded sheepishly. "I used my son's college funds."

"Damn…" another man shook his head.

Hiten and Koura both exchanged glances. This was going bad. Not only for their bet but for Sesshomaru and Kagome.

Koura held her throat gently and whispered to Hiten. "I sense a lot of hurt coming from that room, Hiten."

"I'm not an empath like you, Koura...but I feel the same thing." Hiten sighed then rubbed her shoulder. " I'll do it…I'll ask her."

Koura smiled. " Good… thank you."

The office closed early for the night. Everyone went home early to make their arrangements and get dressed for the event. Kagome and Sesshomaru exited the building and she stopped as he turned toward the parking lot.

" Um...I'm going to take the train home." She said.

Sesshomaru shot an incredulous look at her then frowned. "Why?"

" I just…want to walk for a little bit." She said, not waiting for him to respond.

Sesshomaru watched her walk away, debating whether to stop her but it was clear that she wanted to be left alone. Why didn't he accept her invitation? Why would he turn her down when it was the opposite of what he wanted to do? He cursed at himself and got into his car.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Kagome sighed as she paced back and forth waiting for the train at the platform. She glanced at her watch and shook her head. Kohaku was supposed to meet her at 5pm and she needed to get ready for the event.

"Hey there, what's a sexy thing like you taking the train for?" said a voice behind her.

Kagome turned around slowly with her arms crossed and smiled. "Hiten..."

"You didn't go home with Sesshomaru. Why?"

"Just wanted to take the train..." she sniffled. She realized she was tearing and immediately wiped her tears. Oh god, she hoped Hiten notice but seeing the look on his face told her he did.

"Why are you crying?" he asked. Fuck, she thought. That's just great. Why was she crying anyway? Oh right, because she felt lonely and unwanted.

"I'm not crying." She tittered. "I'm just…allergic. My eyes water all the time in the subway."

"Oh yeah?" Hiten pulled out a napkin from his Dunkin donut bag.

"Yep..." Kagome forced a smile.

" Come on Kagome. You can tell me." Hiten grinned. "I cross my heart and promise it stays between us. You look like you need a friend."

Kagome chuckled. "I'll be fine, Hiten. Thanks..." A loud horn sounded as the train entered the station.

"I was wondering if you had found a date yet?" Hiten yelled over the loud sound.

" No.." Kagome shook her head.

"Would you like to come with me then?" he shouted.

Kagome smiled and backed away as the train came closer.

" Sure!"

"Cool!" he said and rested his hand on her back as they entered the train.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Kagome entered the apartment and saw Sesshomaru on the fire escape, smoking a cigarette.

" Hey, did anyone come?" she said, dropping her purse by the door.

"No.." Sesshomaru said as he came into the apartment and flicked his cigarette off the balcony. "You're expecting someone?"

"Yeah, Sango's brother. He needs to talk to me about something." Kagome said, rushing to the bathroom.

"Why are you rushing?" Sesshomaru asked.

"I'm going to the event." She said, removing her blazer and hurling it across her bed.

"Oh." He said. "You're…going alone?"

"No, I have a date." She said, walking toward the bathroom.

"You got a date in the last hour?" he jerked his head back and shot her an incredulous glance.

"Yeah." She said, noticing the scorn on his face. "Why?"

"No…reason." He said, turning around. She rolled her eyes and went to shower.

After twenty minutes, a knock sounded at the door. Sesshomaru looked at the door then at the bathroom door. He would have to answer it. He sighed and got up. How he missed the days of having a butler.

He opened the door and his eyes opened wide at a pair of familiar eyes staring back at him.

"Sesshomaru?" Rin said, standing next to boy. He was a street kid, Sesshomaru quickly noticed.

The boy next to her raised his brows at her and Sesshomaru. "Rin, you know this guy?"

Rin nodded with her mouth open. "Kohaku, this is my brother Sesshomaru."

Kohaku squinted. "Wait, did we get the apartment wrong? Does Kagome live here?"

Sesshomaru nodded, not taking his eyes off of Rin. " She does."

"Cool...I'm Kohaku. She's expecting me." Kohaku squeezed between the door and Sesshomaru.

"Rin, what are you doing here?" Sesshomaru asked.

" I should ask you the same. Is this where you've been staying? With Kagome?" she had a big cheesy smile on her face.

"Not exactly..." Sesshomaru held the door and looked away.

"Sesshomaru, what do you mean by not exactly? Aren't you going to invite me in?" Rin asked.

Sesshomaru opened the door more giving her room to enter and stared out into the hallway. This is not good, he thought. Rin was the type who couldn't control her mouth and was unable to keep secrets. He closed the door and turned towards the living room. Rin sat on the couch as Kohaku rummaged the fridge. Kagome came out of the bathroom in a towel and stood frozen as Rin looked at her with a shocked expression. Kohaku came out of the kitchen holding a sandwich.

"Whoa..." he said.

"Um..." Kagome tittered. " Excuse me a moment, would ya?" she ran to her room.

Kohaku and Rin both looked at Sesshomaru who had his hands on his hips and avoided their scrutinizing gazes. Kagome came back out in a t shirt and sweats and sat across from them.

Rin turned to Sesshomaru and smiled broadly. " I'm confused, Sesshomaru."

"About?" Sesshomaru tried to sound calm and sat down next to Kagome. He scooted over to the far end of the couch.

"Well, I'm confused as to why...you are living here with Kagome...and Inuyasha is back at the manor with Kikyo. I thought you and Kikyo were together and Inuyasha was with Kagome."

"Kikyo's living at the mansion?" Kagome looked at Rin then at Sesshomaru.

"Oh yeah." Rin laughed oblivious to what was going on. Kohaku nudged her.

"How do you two know each other?" Kagome asked wanting to get her mind off of what Rin had just told her.

"We go to the same school." Kohaku answered darting his eyes uncomfortably from Sesshomaru to Kagome.

They all sat silently for a moment. Kagome twirled her wet hair as Kohaku drummed his fingers on his lap.

" So…Kohaku, you said you have something to ask me?" Kagome said as she stood up and fixed her shirt. Sesshomaru glanced at her before Rin catching him with a smile. He looked at Rin and squinted.

"Yeah...let's talk privately." he gestured toward the fire escape.

Kagome looked behind her and nodded. " Okay."

They both went to the fire escape leaving Rin alone with Sesshomaru.

Rin leered at Sesshomaru with a teasing smile. Sesshomaru stared back at her with a scowl.

"Why do you continue to stare at me, Rin." he expelled a heavy sigh, not liking the idea of Kagome going to this event.

"You've changed." she eyed him carefully. " So... you're living in an apartment...with Kagome. What's going on, Sesshomaru?" Rin went serious. "What was that fight about, between you and Inuyasha?"

Sesshomaru sighed and looked down. How fast she grew up, he thought. She wasn't stupid. He knew that she was aware of what was going on but still wanted it confirmed by him.

"Nothing you need to worry about." he said.

"Sesshomaru...are you and Kagome..."

"No.." he answered flatly.

"Why not?" Rin groaned. " You guys make a cute couple and you're always looking at her."

"Rin..." Sesshomaru spat.

"Alright, sorry." Rin gulped.

"Rin, I must ask you to not speak of what you see today. You didn't see me." Sesshomaru informed.

" Mmhmm." Rin teased. "I promise."

Sesshomaru sighed. Somehow, he knew that her promises were like his social skills. Non-existent.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

"What's going on, Kohaku?" Kagome sat at the step of her fire escape.

Kohaku stood up and leaned against the railing and pulled out a pack of cigarettes.

"Kohaku, what the hell are you doing? When did you start smoking?" Kagome stood up and tried to grab the cigarettes away from the 14-year-old.

Kohaku snatched his pack away from her. " Kagome..." his tone went serious. "Please, I didn't come here to be treated as a kid. I've seen things that most 14-year old's haven't seen. Smoking cigarettes are the least of my problems."

"Kohaku..." Kagome said sadly. She backed away and leaned on the railing beside him. " Ok…I'm sorry. This is hard for me to see; I've known you since you were six."

Kohaku lit his cigarette and took one long pull. Kagome looked away not wanting to see the boy she helped babysit, smoke in front of her. " Kagome...I know this bothers you and I beg you not to tell Sango. She just won't understand."

"Okay, Kohaku, I promise I won't."

"I have a few things to tell you and in return I just ask for advice." he said as he exhaled a breath of smoke.

Kagome tried to put her memories of Kohaku as a child aside. "Alright...tell me."

" Ok...Sango doesn't know this since she is now living with Miroku. My step-father was beating on my mom."

"Oh my god, Kohaku!" Kagome gasped.

"That's not the problem, don't worry. He's out of the house now. So anyway, while he would be drunk at home, I'd stay out late hanging with some friends on Broadway, you remember Shippo and Kanna?"

"Yep...the troublemakers." Kagome said with her hands on her hips.

"Yeah well, they aren't as bad as you think. So listen, I was walking on Broadway when that whole thing happened. You know, Inuyasha attacking that drag queen and vandalizing the hotel."

"Oh?" Kagome looked away.

"Yeah...only what I saw wasn't Inuyasha...but you and Sesshomaru." Kohaku smirked. "Don't worry, I assume you have good reason to do what you did. You're not a bad person, Kagome and the secret stays with me."

Kagome looked embarrassed and gripped the railing tightly. "So?"

"Rin told me about Inuyasha and Kikyo living at the manor together. It's none of my business but I had to tell you this. That same night, I saw Kikyo on Broadway. She got out of this place called, 'Naruto's'. It's some bad ass joint that handles money laundering. I know this because I used to be a messenger for him." Kohaku spat out into the air and watched the spit hit the ground.

Kagome blinked back the shock. She couldn't believe this. Little Kohaku.

"I go into Naruto's cause I'm still cool with the guy. Anyway, I asked one of Naruto's goons how he knows Kikyo and he tells me and I quote ' That scheming money hungry bitch owes me a quarter of a million dollars. She's unable to pay because her boyfriend is broke so she has a few days to come up with the money. After the few days are up and if there's no money, they're going to put out a hit on her." Kohaku took another drag.

"Oh my god..." Kagome covered her mouth.

"Now, I don't care much for Kikyo...but you guys look so much alike. I was afraid they might confuse you for her." Kohaku said as he looked back in the apartment. Rin and Sesshomaru were watching television.

"Thanks for telling me this, Kohaku." Kagome gazed out into the street. "Why would she owe him money?"

Kohaku shrugged. "Drugs?"

" No... Kikyo is a lot of things but she doesn't do drugs. Diet pills are the extent of drugs Kikyo will experiment with." Kagome frowned trying to wonder what was going on.

"then if she wasn't using, she was dealing. That's his main business. You would be so surprised how many people work for Naruto, even those you would never imagine. Losing a quarter of a million dollars, I dunno, she must have gotten jacked for the merchandise."

Kagome remembered the envelope of cash she'd taken back from her. Three thousand dollars. Kikyo was probably saving money to pay him back.

" I don't want you hanging out there, Kohaku."

"Don't worry, I'm clean now. I just go to school and work at the restaurant sometimes with my mom." he assured her.

" Ok...good and you need to quit smoking or you're going to wind up like Sesshomaru." Kagome pointed to the ground. " You see all those cigarette butts? That's all him." she laughed.

"So, what did you want advice on?" Kagome asked.

"Well..." Kohaku looked inside and glanced at Rin. Kagome followed his eyes.

"Ohh..I see..." she stifled a smile.

"I like her...she knows I like her...but I don't know how to ask her." He groaned.

"Only advice I can tell you is, don't wait too long. Girls grow tired of waiting." Kagome rolled her eyes.

Kohaku shook his head and smirked. " Hey...um…are you and Sesshomaru—"

"No." Kagome said flatly.

"You sound disappointed." he teased.

"Shut up!" she gently shoved him. "I'm not disappointed, I have a date tonight!" Kagome reminded herself and opened her eyes wide. "Shit..." she looked down at her watch.

The house phone inside rang and Sesshomaru picked it up. Kagome looked inside and wondered if it was for her.

"Yes?" Sesshomaru spoke into the receiver.

Nothing, silence.

"Is someone there? " Sesshomaru continued. He heard someone on the other line. He could hear them breathing.

'U-uh...is Kagome there?" the voice stammered.

"Who's asking?" Sesshomaru frowned.

" H-Hiten..." the voice squeaked.

Sesshomaru's jaw tightened as he looked back at Kagome who was already staring at him.

"It's for you."

Kagome smiled and ran to the phone.

"Yes?"

Kohaku entered the apartment and sat next to Rin. Sesshomaru went back to watching television but couldn't help trying to hear Kagome's conversation.

"Sure, ok cool. I'll be ready by that time...okay, see you then." Kagome hung up.

"What did he want?" Sesshomaru asked.

" Oh...he was just seeing if I was ready." Kagome began to walk to her room.

Rin and Kohaku darted eyes between Sesshomaru and Kagome and then exchanged glances.

"Ready for what?" Sesshomaru tried to sound nonchalant.

"Hiten's my date for the event. I bumped into him and he asked me."

"I assumed you weren't going." He said, narrowing his gaze at her back as she turned to go to her room.

" Well...you assumed wrong." Kagome smiled and looked at Rin. " Wanna help me get ready?"

" Ohhhh, yeah!" Rin jumped up and followed Kagome to the room leaving Sesshomaru and Kohaku alone.

Kohaku peeked at Sesshomaru occasionally and sighed.

"So... girls, huh?" he tried to break the ice.

Sesshomaru just shot him an impatient side look.

Kohaku smiled awkwardly. " Yep..."

An hour later, Rin came back out into the living room and sat down.

"That was excruciatingly long.." Kohaku whispered to her looking at Sesshomaru.

The door knocked and Sesshomaru went to answer it. He opened the door to see Hiten in a white suit, holding a bouquet of roses. Hiten smiled nervously as he nodded.

"Hi, my Lord. I've come to pick Kagome up." Hiten raised his brows.

Sesshomaru didn't say anything and opened the door wider allowing him to enter. He was about to lecture about having him pick her up, disclosing his whereabouts to him and everyone else but shrugged it off. He honestly didn't care anymore if they found out where he was staying. Hiten entered not taking his eyes off of Sesshomaru and walked down the hallway where he was greeted by Rin.

"Hi, you must be Kagome's date!" Rin squeaked. Kohaku, noticing Sesshomaru's contempt, tugged on Rin's sleeve trying to hint for her to be quiet but it went unnoticed.

"Yes…I am…her date." Hiten gulped feeling Sesshomaru behind him boring a hole into his head. At least it was working, Hiten thought. Perhaps Koura was right. He needed encouragement.

Kagome came out and they all stopped and stared including Sesshomaru who was leaning against the doorway. His frown had faded into a soft expression as he took in the beautiful appearance of his roommate. She strutted down the hallway, her gown clinging to her curves, her breasts rested perkily over the low plunge neckline, thanks to her lacey low plunge push up bra. She twirled around to show her backless side and stumbled in a doofy manner as she got closer to them. Rin and Kohaku chuckled.

"Holy boobs." Kohaku said and Rin smacked him in the shoulder.

"Wow, Kagome...you look amazing!" Rin marveled.

Kohaku stuck his fingers in his mouth and whistled and howled. " You're on fire you're so hot."

"You do look beautiful, Kagome." Hiten smirked.

Kagome looked at everyone. Although she was flattered with everyone's comments. Only one truly mattered to her. She looked at Sesshomaru who was still staring at her, his eyes fixated on her. He blinked back realizing he was staring and cleared his throat.

"Well, you don't want to be late." Sesshomaru looked away.

Kagome's smile faded into a frown and grinned towards Hiten.

"Right…well, let's go then."

Kohaku and Rin's smile faded taking notice of the tension in the room.

"We should probably go." Kohaku got up and faked a stretch.

"I'll drive you home." Sesshomaru said to them.

"No, that's alright, my Lord. Allow me." Hiten suggested. " We have another hour to kill so we can drop them off."

Kohaku and Rin looked at Sesshomaru who then nodded. " Very well then...enjoy yourselves. " he walked away.

Kagome was the last one out the door and looked back at Sesshomaru who had his back to her.

"See you later." she said not waiting for his response which wouldn't have come anyway. Sesshomaru was left alone with his thoughts as the empty quiet apartment engulfed him. His fingers started to fidget, and he reached into his pocket for his cigarettes. He hopped onto the fire escape and pulled a cigarette out, still debating whether he should smoke or not, he placed it behind his ear for the moment. Images popped into his mind of Kagome in her formal gown. Images of Hiten with his arms around her waist, his hands moving freely over her body. Images of Kagome, getting drunk and being taken advantage of.

Sesshomaru could hear the grinding of his teeth the more he thought about Kagome. After ten minutes, a knock sounded at the door. Frowning, he wondered who it was as he went to answer it. Shurran was in the hallway in a white halter top gown.

"Sometimes, a woman must take matters into her own hands..." she said, biting her lip and casting a lustful glance at him.

"What are you doing here, Shurran?" Sesshomaru turned back not inviting her in but not telling her to leave either. She took that as invitation enough to proceed inside.

"I've come to take you to the ball, my lord." she smirked. " A man such as yourself shouldn't stay in on such night. There is so much waiting for you."

"It's a night just as any other. How'd you know where to find me?"

"I snuck into HR and got a hold of Kagome's address. I assumed you were with her. Rumor going around and all. I must say, I am shocked to find you downtown. But I'm sure you have your reasons." she walked over to him and rested her hand on his shoulder.

"What are you doing going through Kagome's folder? Those files are confidential." Sesshomaru scolded.

"I'm sorry." Shurran took her hand off and bowed her head. "I was being selfish. I wanted to get a hold of you is all."

Sesshomaru pinched the bridge of his nose as he squeezed his eyes shut. He was being combative because the thought of Kagome out with Hiten was upsetting him. He was also disappointed to why he had cared and let such little thing as Kagome out on a date, bother him. They weren't together. She could go out with anyone she pleased to. But the more he told himself that, the more he didn't believe it. He should have said yes to her at lunch.

"So, are you accompanying this lonely girl or did I just spend five thousand dollars on this dress for nothing?" she let out a coquettish laugh.

Sesshomaru pondered for a moment as he studied her. He could keep an eye on Kagome to make sure no one took advantage of her.

"Very well then, I shall accompany you."

"Good."

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

After Hiten and Kagome dropped Rin and Kohaku off, they drove silently through the night.

"So..." Hiten started and Kagome looked at him.

"You seem...to have a lot on your mi-"

" I don't get it." Kagome snapped out of the silence. "I think I look pretty cute at the risk of sounding conceited but damn it! I deserve it."

"Uh..." Hiten stuttered.

"and did he say one thing? Nooo, nothing about my dress and nothing about my hair. He never notices!" Kagome growled. "that ungrateful dog is so stubborn and is such a cold fish! I'm surprise I wake up in the same house not frozen to death by his coldness!"

Hiten couldn't help laugh. " Kagome...please, you're making me crack up here."

"It's true!" Kagome laughed then groaned. " Ugh...why do I do this to myself? "she buried her head into her hands.

"because he is hot?" Hiten teased.

Kagome laughed. "Ugh, he is hot, isn't he?"

"Um, yeah. If I were gay, I'd be all up in that piece." he joked making Kagome snort.

"I don't know, Hiten. I'm such an awful date, talking about another guy but I don't really have anyone to talk about this to. My friends are...well they wouldn't understand. It's more than the looks. It's the way he makes me feel and I just thought…he felt the same way."

Hiten was smiling uncontrollably. Oh my god, he couldn't wait to tell Koura that they would win the bet for sure.

"I feel like I can do whatever I want. He motivates me. He...saved my life."

"Saved your life, how so?" Hiten asked, most intrigued.

" I was a mess in my last breakup...and...I thought I would never be at top again and I am, Hiten."

"Do you still have feelings for your ex?" Hiten asked.

" No? Yes? I don't know. I don't think so but it's hard to say. I mean, we were together for five years."

Hiten whistled. "Yeah, that's practically married."

"Yeah." Kagome rolled her eyes. " Anyway, rant over. I'm going to let it go and have a good time tonight and accept that he doesn't feel the same way about me."

" I highly doubt that." Hiten casted her a side smirk.

Moments later, they arrived at the event where they were greeted by all the other employees. A lot of people were not too happy to see Kagome with Hiten but for tonight, everyone put everything aside to have a good time. The party was blasting with great music. Kagome mingled with Koura and a few other coworkers, taking shots of vodka and dancing. She danced with Hiten for a couple of songs and they chatted. He was nice but there was no chemistry between them. He seemed to feel the same way, though, she'd been wrong before. Koura rushed over to their group and started whispering rumors.

"You will not guess who they are not letting in?" Koura squealed.

"Who?" Kagome shouted through the loud music as she danced, scanning the entire hall.

"Inuyasha from City slackers and his fiancée'. "

"Fiancée'?" Kagome stopped dancing.

"Yeah, the bouncer just had them removed from the premises." Koura laughed. " Youkai entertainment blacklisted them! Fucked up, right?"

" Yeah...real fucked up. Who's Youkai entertainment?" Kagome continued to dance and squinted through the crowds.

"They're the cohosting this event. They're like us account holders but for celebrities."

Photographers huddled at the entrance followed by many flashes. Kagome squinted through the crowds to see what the big deal was. Her heart dropped when she saw Sesshomaru at the entrance, with his arm linked to Shurran. He had on a black Versace suit tapered perfectly to his broad shoulders and slender torso. Kagome felt a ball forming in her throat as he turned his head to meet her gaze.

"Unbelievable." She muttered as she blinked back her tears and beelined for the open bar on the other side of the room. Sesshomaru watched as Kagome cast him a disapproving look and storm off, Hiten following behind her.

"Can I get two shots of vodka?" she asked, her voice shaking as she straightened her posture and tried to fix her expression to look indifferent.

"Kagome..." Hiten put his arm around her.

"Hiten, please leave me be. I'm terrible company right now. I've heard enough bad news today to last me a lifetime of depression." she said as the bartender handed her two shots of vodka. She grabbed it and gulped it all down. Hiten grimaced as he watched Kagome down the two shots and asked for two more, throwing a forty-dollar tip to the bartender.

"Kagome, calm down with the drinks." Hiten gestured the bartender to cancel her drinks. The bartender nodded and continued to serve others.

"Come, Kagome. You are my date and you must dance with me..." Hiten pulled her to the dance floor and they began to dance.

Sesshomaru stared expressionless from the other side of the hall sipping his champagne as Shurran made small talk with people nearby. Shurran pulled him around, trying to get him more involved but his attention stayed on Kagome. A reporter came up to Sesshomaru with her cameraman behind her.

"Lord Sesshomaru, what made you change your mind on attending. Rumor has it you always decline the black and white's invitation."

"No comment." Sesshomaru said, not taking his eyes off of Kagome. He watched as she danced provocatively with Hiten, who had his hands on her hips.

"Lord Sesshomaru, what comment do you have on your brother's latest committed atrocities?"

"I have no comment about anything." Sesshomaru frowned, watching Hiten wrap his arms around Kagome's waist. He turned her around and leaned into her ear, b rushing his lips close to her head. Sesshomaru gripped his wine glass firmly and tightened his jaw. "Excuse me for a moment." Sesshomaru handed Shurran his glass of wine and walked across the room toward Hiten and Kagome. Shurran stared at the glass of wine he handed her and at him and scoffed.

Hiten peeked through Kagome's har noticing Sesshomaru coming toward them, looking highly annoyed. So it worked, he smirked. Showtime. Kagome had been too tipsy to even ask what was going on. She just kept on dancing.

"May I cut in?" Sesshomaru asked but it had sounded more of a demand than a question.

Hiten nodded and bowed as he allowed Sesshomaru to cut in.

"So, is this your way of rebelling?" Sesshomaru stood in front of Kagome. Kagome opened her eyes and scoffed as she turned around.

Sesshomaru grabbed her wrist and pulled her to him. He rested his hand on the small of her back.

"Aren't you going to dance with me?"

"Just do me a favor, stay away the hell away from me!" Kagome pulled herself away from him. "You turn me down when I ask you to this event and then you have the gall to bring Shurran. Why couldn't you just come out and say the truth. 'No, Kagome. I don't want to go with you'. I really thought out of all people, you wouldn't lie."

"Kagome..." Sesshomaru pulled her back into him. Shit, just tell her. "I.."

"Forget it!" she pushed him then giggled drunkenly. "no hard feelings, I get it."

"Damn it..." he cursed to himself and walked the opposite way.

Kagome walked back to the bar and ordered another drink. Sesshomaru went to the bar on the opposite side of the room and ordered an old fashioned and a shot as he kept his gaze on Kagome the rest of the evening. After an hour, Hiten walked over to him and stood next to him as he ordered a glass of champagne.

"Sir...permission to speak an opinion?"

"Hiten..." Sesshomaru hissed, noticing Kagome talk to another man from the office. The man had been fixated on her cleavage the entire time. The neckline was so low, he feared she'd sneeze and her breasts would explode out of the dress. "I wish to be left alone."

Hiten watched Sesshomaru gulp down his shot and old fashioned in three sips as he kept his attention on Kagome. What the hell were these two going through, he wondered. Why was it clear to everyone else but them?

"Sir...I know it is not my place but perhaps you'd want to start by complimenting her dress or how she looks."

Sesshomaru glowered, taking the last sip of his bourbon. "You're right. It is not your place."

Sesshomaru set his empty glass on the bar and strode toward Kagome. Glaring at the man staring at her breasts, he wrapped his hands over her arms and whispered into her ear.

"Kagome…dance with me."

Kagome looked over her shoulder at him, his face was so close to hers. His eyes watched her lips for a response.

"Okay…" she said as he grabbed her hand and pulled her to the dance

He grabbed her hand and lead her to the dance floor. The crowd dispersed leading a path to the middle of the dance floor. A piano interlude sounded as he coiled his fingers into her hand and turned her around, placing his other hand on her lower back. He pulled her close to him and she looked up. His amber gaze brightened as he looked down at her. Kagome's breath hitched, feeling the closeness and warmth of his body against hers as she looked at his lips. The song started and they swayed their bodies in synchrony as they danced slowly to the melody.

Listen to your heart
When he's calling for you.
Listen to your heart
There's nothing else you can do.
I don't know where you're going
And I don't know why,
But listen to your heart
Before you tell him goodbye.

Sometimes you wonder if this fight is worthwhile.
The precious moments are all lost in the tide, yea.
They're swept away and nothing is what is seems,
The feeling of belonging to your dreams.

And there are voices
That want to be heard.
So much to mention
But you can't find the words.
The scent of magic,
The beauty that's been
When love was wilder than the wind.

Koura and Hiten watched from the bar, jumping with excitement and hoping that they would kiss. As the song reached toward the end, their bodies moved closer to each other. Kagome could feel him stroking his thumb against the side of her torso. Kagome rested her head on his chest and he caressed his hand up her back, sending chills throughout her body. She looked up at him and her lips taunted at him as they parted with anticipation. She wanted him to kiss her. He could feel her warm breath on his as his head lowered slowly to meet hers. He couldn't hear the music anymore. Instead, he heard their heartbeats and their breathing become unified. Brushing the top of his lip at the edge of hers, the soft melody erupted with an explosive bass drop then techno beats. The crowd roared and started jumping, snapping them both out of their trance.

Across the room, Koura and Hiten groaned.

"Damn it!" Koura strangled Hiten. "They were so close! Life is not fair, damn it!"

"Koura?" Hiten choked. "Please...I ..can't...breathe.."

Sesshomaru stepped back from Kagome, rubbing his hand through his hair. He seemed to struggle whether to come closer or step away. Frustrated, he stormed off the dance floor leaving Kagome confused. Even with the vodka coursing through her veins, she couldn't take it anymore. This back and forth with him. Feeling the effects of the alcohol loosen her resolve, she started dancing.

"No more…" Kagome said to herself. "No more will I take it!" she shouted through the music but the loud techno beat drowned it out. Jumping up and down with the rest of the crowd, she danced toward the stage and raised her arms. The DJ noticed her and pulled her up. Kagome started dancing grabbing everyone's attention.

"Uh oh, looks like someone had too many shots." Koura shouted and whistled. "Go Kagome, strut your stuff!"

Sesshomaru looked over his shoulder and frowned seeing Kagome on stage dancing. Noticing the attention of the male populace being drawn toward her, he pushed through the crowd toward the stage to get her. He could feel the effects of the shots, though it was not enough to cloud his reason. As he got to the edge of the stage, Kagome bent down and howled, and her cleavage was practically begging to burst out of the dress.

"We're leaving." he said as he pulled her and carried her bridal style out of the hall.

"No!" Kagome kicked off her shoes and howled, riling up the crowd. Everyone began to scream. What was supposed to be an elegant event turned into a raunchy rave.

Koura held Hiten's hand as they watched Sesshomaru leave with Kagome. " Oh my god...we might still have a chance." she jumped up and patted both Hiten and Shurran, who was extremely pissed. Hiten began to cheer as he made his way to join the crowd, pulling Koura with him.

Sesshomaru carried Kagome to the car and secured the seatbelt over her. Her perfume awoken his arousal. Her messy bun fell loose down to the middle of her back in waves.

The valet attendant came with his keys.

"My lord, are you well enough to drive?" he dangled the keys.

Sesshomaru snatched the keys from the valet and got into the car and drove off. He trusted himself to get them home safely. He had two drinks and a shot, that wasn't going to deter his driving capabilities, however, it was enough to loosen his resoluteness.

Kagome giggled as she looked toward him, watching him as he focused intently on the road. Kagome kept howling and dancing in her seat,

"Kagome, please be quiet." Sesshomaru sighed. He was trying to stay focused but he kept sneaking looks at her thigh peeking out from the slip and the lace of her bra revealing itself from the edge of her plunging neckline.

"No! Don't tell me what to do!" she chortled. " You're not the boss of me! Oh wait, you are!" she cackled. "Hey..." she stopped laughing and bit her lip. "Was I out of it or were you going to kiss me back there?" Kagome shot a salacious smirk. She reached her hand over and caressed his thigh.

"Kagome!" he flinched, not expecting to feel her hand on him. He turned the corner toward their block and looked for parking.

"You were, weren't you?" she snickered, removing her seatbelt. "What stopped you?" Kagome climbed off her chair onto his lap and the car swerved to the side as he quickly pressed down on the brakes. She kissed his neck and he grabbed her arms to pull her off him.

"Kagome…" he breathed heavily. "please sto—"

He tried to stop her, but her lips felt good on his neck. Finally, he swallowed hard and pulled her off of him. "Kagome stop it! Control yourself!" Sesshomaru scolded as he pushed her onto her seat. Luckily, he saw parking up ahead and quickly parked the car. He turned toward Kagome, who was quiet in her seat as she stared out the windshield.

" Listen…I'm sorry but-" he said but Kagome got out of the car and walked up to the building's entrance.

Sesshomaru got out of the car and followed her up the stairs. "You're being irrational."

"Am I?" she shot a scowl towards him and knocked on the door. " Damn it, open up."

" No one is in there." Sesshomaru looked at her disbelievingly and dangled his keys in front of her face and opened the door. Kagome walked in and dropped her things on the floor.

"What a beautiful night! Wooo!" she yelled.

"The neighbors, Kagome." he sighed.

"Screw the neighbors! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! " she screeched.

Sesshomaru winced from her high-pitched voice.

Kagome began to jump on the couches. "The night is still young! Let's dance some more!"

"Kagome...please stop this. Get down from the couch now." Sesshomaru rubbed his temples. He didn't know what to do. He started to feel a little tipsy himself and tried to be rational for the both of them but she was making it difficult.

Sesshomaru reached his hands up to help her down from the couches but Kagome jumped on top of him, wrapping her legs around his waist and began to kiss and nibble on his neck again.

"Kagome..." he grunted from her biting. Her lips made its way to his mouth and he breathed heavily into her mouth as he stroked his tongue against hers. Oh God, he thought. She tasted so good. He yanked himself away from her and set her down.

"Kagome, you and I need to go to sleep." Sesshomaru said, removing his blazer and pushing her toward her room.

"What do you think I'm trying to do?" she said, wrapping her arms around his neck to pull him down to kiss her but he held his head back.

"No, I mean in our own beds, away from each other. " he tried to be clearer " Kagome...you are drunk. I also had a couple of drinks. I am just trying to prevent something we'll regret."

"Don't you mean, you'll regret?" she slapped his hands away from her and turned toward her room. "It's useless!" Kagome cried. "Here I am, throwing myself at you like some pathetic girl and you are clearly turning me down. I suppose if I were Shurran, it'd be different." Kagome unzipped her dress and slipped out of it, revealing her low plunge lace bra and matching thong. Sesshomaru stood by her doorway and swallowed the lust building up inside him.

Kagome shook her head as she searched for something to cover herself. "I was an idiot to think that maybe you felt the same way, but I guess that was dumb of me, huh? To think you'd have any interest in me?" she grabbed an oversized t-shirt and trudged toward the bathroom, Sesshomaru followed behind her, feeling his breaths become heavy as he marveled at her body. She turned around to face him and scoffed.

"But you don't like anyone, do you? No, I guess no one is good enough for you."

"Please stop. The garbage that pours out of your mouth is testing my anger." He inched closer to where he towered over her.

"Oh god forbid your anger is tested." Kagome turned around, holding the T-shirt in her hand. "Anyway, I'll leave you alone from now on! I clearly read us wrong and thought you-whatever, you clearly want to date Shurran so I'll just start dating and-"

Kagome gasped when Sesshomaru pinned her against the wall beside the bathroom and grabbed her arms.

"You think you know what there is to know about me, don't you!" Sesshomaru raised his voice scaring Kagome. He could feel himself losing control. He couldn't take her accusations anymore. The anger and alcohol combined was too much for him to hold in.

"Sesshomaru, let go!" Kagome struggled in his grip. He breathed heavily as he pulled her arms over her head and pressed his body against hers. The last of his will power telling him to let her go vanished into thin air and left a lusting ravenous beast in its wake. A growl escaped his chest as he ogled between her lips and breasts.

"Is this what you want from me?" he parted her lips with his and pushed his tongue into her mouth. Their tongues collided and massaged against each other. They both let out moans at the same time and he gently gnawed on her lip as he brought her arms back down. His hand wrapped around her neck, thumb stroking down her collarbone and pulling off one of her bra straps. Without effort, one of her breasts fell out of the bra and his fingers lightly brushed her nipple, feeling it swell in his touch and he broke away from their kiss to bring his mouth to it. He teasingly licked then sucked and she threw her body back against the wall. He came back up and pulled her back into another hard kiss as she unbuttoned his dress shirt. His hand continued to knead her breast as she removed his shirt and ran her hands over his chest down his abs and he felt his body ignite with overwhelming desire. He wanted her badly, he realized. His hands dropped to her hips, fingers tracing the edges of her underwear. He slipped his finger into her underwear and kissed her again. "Is this what you want?" he breathed, feeling the warmth of her core as he fingered her wetness. He moaned. This is what I want.

"Yes." She moaned into his mouth.

He removed the other strap of her bra and brought his lips over her nipple and sucked as his fingers buried deeper into her opening. He thrusted his fingers repeatedly, her hips rotating into his movement. He could feel his erection begging to get out of his pants and she noticed as she cupped her hand over his rock-hard phallus. Unzipping his pants, she pulled out his hardened member and started stroking it, making it hard for him suppress his moans. He wanted to be inside her already. He lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around him as he carried her toward his bedroom and dropped onto the bed. He couldn't decide what he wanted more, to kiss her, lick her sweet wetness or make her scream with his powerful thrusts.

Breaking away from their kiss, he dragged his tongue down her chest toward her breast, sucked on her nipples as he pinched the other one, then dragged his tongue down toward her inner thigh. His throbbing length ached to be inside her but he wanted to taste her first.

Kagome gazed down at him as he positioned his face between her thighs. She shivered feeling his warm breath against her opening, his strong hands gripping her thighs as he tickled her with his tongue. Her pelvis raised from the bed wanting to feel his tongue press harder against her. A content growl escaped his throat as he licked and sucked, he seemed to be enjoying it as much as she was. Her warm center pulsated as he rotated his tongue in circles making her grip the bed sheets as she erupted into a powerful climax. She expelled a loud moan that possibly rattled the walls and he showed no mercy as he threw his body over hers and thrusted himself inside her while she continued to climax. Her breath hitched as she felt his massive thick length stretch out her tight opening. He was big, much bigger than Inuyasha and he was hard as a rock as he pushed himself deep inside and continued to thrust repeatedly. He grunted beside her ear, his breath quickening with each thrust and raspy moans escaped him regardless of him trying hard to keep them stifled. She whined with pleasure, digging her nails into his arm and back. He slowed his rhythm as he brought his lips back to hers, kissing her heavily with each deep thrust. He couldn't believe this was happening as he watched her writhe underneath him. He sped up his rhythm, pounding his appendage into her harder and harder. He grunted, feeling his shaft throb for release when his fangs protracted. He panted, knitting his brows wondering how it could be. No, it's not possible but as he pummeled harder, his fangs taunted him to impale her so he could be released from the imprisonment of his desire. He jerked, feeling the sensation of his climax tingle the tip of his phallus as he dug his fangs into her shoulder. He moaned then spasmed as he emptied his pent-up desire inside of her. His body suddenly felt limp and heavy as he draped his body over hers, breathing hard into the pillow beside her.

Kagome panted heavily as tears ran down the side of her face. The feeling of euphoria overwhelmed her as she questioned why she was crying. They were tears of joy and she feared having the feeling go away. She just wanted it to stay like this. Sesshomaru stayed on top of her and held her tightly as he felt like he just snapped out of a trance. He didn't want to look her in the eyes. He could feel the same reaction coming from her. Were they regretting it already? He mounted off of her and rolled next to her, still breathing heavily. Kagome curled up next to him and placed her hand on his chest. He didn't know what to do at first as his hand searched for a place to rest and made its way to the side of her head. He stroked her hair for a few minutes and her head grew heavy with tiredness. He gazed up at the ceiling wondering what they had done. Why had he marked her? No, he mentally scolded himself. They were both drunk, he assessed. They had no control. There is no way he had fallen in love with her. It was impossible.

"You looked beautiful today..." he uttered under his breath, barely even a whisper.

Kagome's eyes were closed but she heard him and smiled and for the first time in almost four months, neither of them had trouble falling asleep.
