A/N: It's been a crazy few weeks. I'm working on the next PT chapter, but in the meantime, I needed something a little easier.

Maura was so lost in thought about what had just happened with Jane as she drove home and let herself into her house that she almost didn't notice the destruction. She quickly walked backwards out of the house, trying to remain calm despite her fear – what if they were still in her house?

She pulled her phone out of her purse. Her first instinct was to call Jane, but as her finger hovered over Jane's name, she hesitated. She wasn't ready, but more than anything, she didn't want her next conversation with Jane to be about this. So, she called Vince instead.

After that, everything happened so fast, and by the next afternoon, Jane and Barry were arresting Captain Connors in Paddy Doyle's hospital room, and Jane was handing over Paddy's book to Lieutenant Cavanaugh.

Before she could talk herself out of it, Maura stepped towards her biological father and steeling herself, asked, "I want to know something. Would you have shot her?"

Paddy made sure he looked Maura directly in the eye when he answered, "Hell yeah." Turning to address Jane, he added, "You're a cop."

Maura's heart stopped, and she thought she might pass out, but before she could respond, Jane grabbed her elbow and dragged her towards the door. "I got something I need to show you," she said, not leaving Maura any room to protest.

They rode in complete silence. Maura wanted to say something to break the tension in the car, but every time she opened her mouth to speak, she forgot what she was about to say. However, when Jane pulled into the Boston Cemetery, Maura's curiosity got the best of her.

"Why are we here?" Maura asked when Jane parked.

"I…I…I should just show you," Jane said, and the pain in Jane's voice scared Maura more than anything else had this afternoon.

"Oh, okay," she said quietly, but Jane was already out of the car.

Maura crossed her arms in front of her body protectively as she followed one step behind Jane. As soon as Jane stopped in front of the gravestone, Maura saw it – saw what Jane wanted to show her.

'Baby Maura Doyle, Born August 7, 1976, Died August 7, 1976, Safe From All Earthly Harm' it read. Her grave. She was supposed to be dead.

Maura's hand flew to her mouth as she tried to stifle her sobs.

Jane reached out to gently rub the small of Maura's back. She didn't know how else to offer comfort. All she wanted to do was wrap her arms around Maura and hold her until the pain went away, but she knew that Maura probably wouldn't like that right now.

Suddenly, Maura fell to her knees. "I always wondered why she never looked for me," she choked out, knowing that Jane would know that she was referring to her birth mother.

Jane sighed, completely at a loss. "Is there anything I can do?" she asked, her heart breaking for her friend.

"Please go."

It was the last thing Jane wanted to do, but since it was the only thing Maura had asked of her, she nodded. Jane dropped the keys next to Maura. She'd find her own way back to the precinct – her car was still there anyway.

"Wait!" Maura called after Jane. Was Maura going to ask her to stay? Jane hoped. No. "There is one thing," Maura continued. "Tell Pike I want my chair back."

Jane smiled as she turned back to leave. If Maura wasn't going to ask her to stay, this was the next best thing.

Maura's eyes dropped back to the gravestone in front of her as fresh tears found their way down her cheeks. At first, she was glad that Jane didn't argue with her request to be alone, but as soon as Jane was out of her sight, Maura regretted asking her to leave. She knew that if she text Jane asking her to come back, her friend would come back immediately, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.

Instead, she continued to stare at the gravestone – her gravestone. For hours.

Maura stood and tried to wipe off the dirt from kneeling. She was mostly successful, but she knew she wouldn't be completely satisfied until she had both her coat and skirt dry cleaned. She wrapped her arms around herself as she looked around the cemetery, trying to get her bearings. She shivered despite the warm evening. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the graves. In early June, the sun didn't set until after 8pm in Boston, which meant that it was probably still only around 7pm now.

Maura stumbled back to her car, her legs sore from sitting in an awkward position for too long.

She drove on autopilot. She didn't remember deciding to drive to Jane's apartment, yet that's exactly where she ended up. Maura's thoughts were still jumbled, but the longer she had stayed in the cemetery, the clearer one thought became: she wasn't going to let this opportunity with Jane pass.

The next thing Maura knew, she was standing in front of Jane's door, unsure of whether to knock or to let herself in with her key as she usually would. After at least thirty seconds of indecision, Maura knocked softly, but she heard nothing on the other side of the door. She knocked harder. Nothing.

Maura turned around and leaned against the door while she tried to decide what to do next. Her mind was a mess – and she hated it.

Eventually, Maura sunk to the ground. She knew that she should probably text Jane…and let herself in…or go home…or do anything other than sit on the ground outside Jane's apartment, but that's still exactly what she did.

Luckily, she wasn't sitting there long when a voice pulled her from her thoughts.

"Maura?" Jane said in surprise when she noticed the woman sitting by her apartment door. "What are you doing? Why are you out here? And on the floor? You should have called me. I woulda come right away. How long have you been here?"

Jane held out her hand to help Maura to her feet. As Jane moved to unlock the door, Maura looked anywhere but at Jane, but when Jane turned to say something, Maura beat her to it.

"I don't hate you," Maura said quickly, folding her arms in front of her chest protectively as she said it.

Jane sighed. "Come'ere," she said as she pulled Maura into a hug, and she was glad that Maura returned the embrace with little hesitation.

"I'm sorry, Jane," Maura whispered against Jane's shoulder, fighting back tears.

"I'm sorry, too," Jane replied. "Come inside?"

Maura nodded as she let go of Jane and followed Jane into her apartment. Maura hung up her coat while Jane locked up her gun.

"Can I get you anything?" Jane asked.

"Just water."

Jane grabbed two water bottles from the fridge and returned to the couch, where Maura was now seated. She sat just to Maura's right, as close as she could without touching the other woman and handed Maura one of the waters.

"Thank you," Maura said quietly. There was an awkward pause before Maura continued, "Ever since we were in that hospital room this afternoon and Paddy said that he would have shot you, I haven't been able to stop picturing the scene in the warehouse ending very differently."

"Maura…" Jane tried to interrupt.

"No, let me get this out," Maura said, placing her hand on Jane's knee. "I was angry, Jane, when you shot Paddy, but…god, Jane…if he had shot you…if you had been hurt…or…or worse…" Maura's voice shook violently as she spoke, and Jane placed her hand on top of Maura's in an attempt to offer some comfort.

"…Jane, I would have been more than angry. I would have been livid and devastated. But my point is, Jane, you mean so much more to me than Paddy does. I don't know if I could ever truly hate you. Because I love you, Jane. I love you in ways that I can't even put into words. You are everything to me, and just imagining life without you hurts more than anything I've ever experienced in the past. You make me a better person – even when you're driving me crazy.

"I reacted poorly in the moment because I thought I'd lost my only opportunity to find my biological mother, to learn more about where I came from. I want to know who my mother is, but Jane, I need you by my side."

"It doesn't have to be one or the other, Maura," Jane said thickly. "I never wanted to take away your chance to know more about your biological family."

"I know that, Jane."

"And you might not believe me, but while I think we're all better off with Paddy Doyle behind bars, I didn't take that shot to make the arrest," Jane said. "I don't want to make my career by taking out someone you love, regardless of who they are."

"I don't love Paddy Doyle. He's a terrible person," Maura insisted with a frown.

Jane wasn't convinced, but she didn't push the issue. "Well, he loves you," she said instead.

"You let him slip away more than once to protect me," Maura said.

"I'd do anything to protect you."

Maura looked at their hands on Jane's knee. She flipped hers over and intertwined her fingers with Jane's. "I don't want you to ruin your career to protect me, and I definitely don't want you to risk your life to protect me," Maura said quietly.

"Well, too bad," Jane said playfully. Maura opened her mouth to argue, but Jane didn't let her. In a more serious tone, she added, "Maura, I love you, too. You said you don't want to think about your life without me? Well, I don't want to think about what my life would be like without you. Because without you, I'm nothing."

Maura blinked furiously, tears pricking at her eyes. "I…" Maura tried to talk, but the lump in her throat was too much. She found herself unconsciously leaning towards Jane, and she didn't notice until Jane's breath tickled her lips.

"I'm going to kiss you now," Jane breathed, hesitating only a second to give Maura time to stop her before she captured the other woman's lips with her own.

Maura's eyes slipped closed when they connected. Her free hand moved to cradle Jane's head, her fingers tangling in the wild curls. When Jane's tongue ran along her bottom lip, requesting entrance, Maura didn't hesitate to part her lips. A throaty moan escaped from deep within her. Jane tasted like beer and French fries, and Maura couldn't get enough.

The kiss was slower than any of their previous kisses. The anger and frustration of yesterday were gone, but the passion remained. Heat flooded Jane's body as she let go of Maura's hand and wrapped both arms around Maura's waist to pull her closer, eliminating the remaining space between them.

Maura turned her body so that she was resting most of her weight on her right hip as she leaned into Jane to deepen the kiss. She squirmed as she tried to get closer to Jane, but her fitted clothes were making that difficult.

"Ermph," Maura huffed frustratedly when she failed to hook her left leg over Jane's.

Jane chuckled lightly as their kiss broke, but she didn't release her hold on Maura's waist. "You know, you always look amazing in these skirts," Jane said as she trailed her finger over Maura's hip and down her thigh, tracing the seam of Maura's plum pencil skirt. Maura shivered at the touch as Jane continued, "But they are less conducive to certain activities…"

Maura laughed and leaned into Jane's side. She slipped off her heels and pulled her feet up onto the couch, tucking her legs underneath her. Jane responded instantly, wrapping her arm around Maura's shoulder and holding her close. Maura's eyes fluttered shut as Jane kissed the top of her head.

"I am sorry about everything that happened, Maura," Jane said quietly. "Well, except this part," she added after a short pause.

"I am, too," Maura said. "Except for this part…and the part in the closet yesterday."

"Yeah, that too," Jane laughed. "It's not how I expected it to happen, but I'm still glad it happened."

"You expected it to happen?" Maura asked, hating the vulnerability that was evident in her voice.

"I dunno if 'expected' is the right word," Jane said solely. "But I wanted it to happen. I wanted you…I want you, and I always will. I think on some level I always have."

"I don't know what I expected either," Maura agreed. "But I definitely would not have expected our first time to be in a supply closet at work."

"As long as it's not our last time, I don't really care where our first time was," Jane said.

"We didn't even finish," Maura continued as her fingers drew idle patterns on Jane's pant-covered thigh. "Or more specifically, you didn't finish. I'd like to remedy that."

Jane snorted. "Make-up sex is way better than angry sex anyway," she teased.

"Mmm, and how do you know that?" Maura quipped, lifting her head from Jane's shoulder to look at her love.

Jane blushed but didn't back down. "That's for me to know and you to find out," she taunted.

"Are you saying you want to show me?" Maura whispered seductively as she moved her face closer to Jane's, pausing when her lips were milimeters away from Jane's.

Instead of answering with words, Jane closed the distance, kissing Maura hard. They kissed for a few minutes before Jane gasped out, "Bedroom."

Maura nodded and stood, pulling Jane with her. Their lips reconnected, but the increased height difference resulting from Jane still in her boots and Maura barefoot made it difficult to maintain the connection as they made their way down the hall.

Jane groaned as she gave up walking to the bedroom hunched over Maura. Instead, she removed her boots and socks, leaving them in a trail on the floor on the way to her bedroom.

When she reached Jane's bedroom, Maura flipped on the light before turning around to face Jane. A sudden shyness overtook her for a moment, but it melted away when Jane stepped into her space and resumed their kiss.

Jane slipped both hands under Maura's black blazer, sliding it down her shoulders until it fell into her hand. She broke the kiss just long enough to drape the blazer over the chair near her bedroom door before returning to her previous position.

Maura smiled at the care Jane took with her clothes, knowing that Jane was only doing it for her. "My clothes need to be dry-cleaned anyway," Maura mumbled in between kisses. "I've been kneeling in a cemetery all afternoon."

"I didn't want to leave you," Jane whispered as she pulled Maura's pin-stripped blouse from her skirt, only vaguely in awe of how perfectly the plum of the blouse matched the color of her skirt. She sighed when her hands found the warm soft skin of Maura's back under her blouse.

Maura cupped Jane's face, pulling it away from her own face just enough to make eye contact. "I know," she said, looking deeply into Jane's eyes. "I shouldn't have asked you to go, but do you know what I love about you?"

Jane gave Maura only the briefest shake of her head.

"I love how you do what I ask. No matter what. And I don't mean in a submissive way. I mean it in a respectful way. You respect me enough to let me decide for myself, but at the same time, I knew – without a doubt – that you would instantly come back if I asked, and you have no idea what that means to me, Jane."

"I love you," Jane said. "I would do anything for you."

Maura closed her eyes and rested her forehead against Jane's. Tears burned behind her eyelids as the full impact of Jane's words hit her like they never had before. "I love you, too," she said thickly, unsure of what else to say.

"Are you okay?" Jane asked after a few moments of silence.

Maura nodded before resuming their kiss. It didn't take long for things to heat up again and within a few minutes, they were both standing in their bras and underwear.

Jane gently guided Maura backwards towards the bed. Maura released her hold on Jane and sat on the bed, moving up to lie with her head on the pillows in the center of the bed. Her breath caught in her throat as Jane crawled up the bed, pausing by her feet.

"You're so beautiful," Jane whispered reverently as her eyes scanned every inch of exposed skin that she had never been allowed to look at before. She leaned down and kissed Maura's ankle bone before continuing to kiss up her calf, over her knee, and up the outside of her thigh.

Every touch of Jane's lips to her skin sent sparks of electricity through her body, but when Jane reached her hip, Maura couldn't wait any longer. "Come up here," she requested, tugging at Jane's arms in a non-verbal echo of her request.

Jane instantly complied. She hovered over Maura as their lips reconnected, but it wasn't enough – not for Maura. Maura moaned into the kiss as she arched her back, pressing her front against Jane's. Her hands splayed across Jane's back, pulling her closer. "Please, Jane," Maura groaned until Jane finally let her full weight settle on top of Maura.

Jane leaned onto her left forearm as they made out, her free hand finding its way into Maura's soft, golden waves. She quickly got lost in the feeling of Maura's skin moving against her. Maura was soft yet toned, gentle yet strong. And Jane couldn't get enough.

Maura's legs spread slightly under Jane, causing Jane's hips to press against her center. She gasped at the feeling, breaking their kiss, but Jane didn't seem to mind. Jane kissed down Maura's jawline, loving the way Maura whimpered when she nibbled playfully at her earlobe. She couldn't get enough of the way Maura groaned when Jane sucked gently on her pulse point, and she loved the shivers that ran down Maura's spine when Jane softly bit her collarbone.

"Oh, god, Jane," Maura moaned as Jane assaulted every inch of her skin with love and attention. Her eyes locked on Jane's when her hand found the clasp of Jane's bra. "Can I?" she asked.

"You can do whatever you want," Jane answered before moving to kiss Maura's neck again, but when Maura didn't unclasp her bra, Jane looked back at Maura in confusion.

Maura's finger traced the edge of Jane's bra strap as she tried to formulate her thoughts. "I don't want this to just be about what I want," she said quietly, her eyes boring into Jane's. "Ever since yesterday, you've made this all about me, about what I want."

"I want you," Jane said firmly. "I told you that," she added without a hint of annoyance in her voice. "There's not much more to it than that. I wanted you yesterday, I want you today, and I'll want you tomorrow. I want you every single day for the rest of my life, and I don't just mean for sex."

Maura smiled up at Jane. "Jane, can I take you on a date?" she asked, her voice full of love.

A huge smile threatened to overtake Jane's face. "I'd love that," she agreed, but then her eyebrows knitted together in concern as she added, "Does that mean we have to wait to do this until…" Her hand waving between them as she said 'this' to indicate their current activities.

Maura chuckled lightly. "If you want to, we can wait, but that wasn't my intention when I asked the question," she said. "This is real for me, Jane. This isn't…I don't want just a one-time thing. Even with the way yesterday happened, I didn't see it as a one-and-done. We were angry and passionate, but…god, Jane, I don't think I've ever felt more loved. We may have fucked in a supply closet, but it still felt like the start of something bigger, of something important."

"It was," Jane said, kissing Maura softly before continuing, "and I don't want to wait, unless you do."

Maura hooked her leg around Jane's hip and used her strength and the element of surprise to flip their positions. She smiled down at Jane's surprised expression. She shook her head as she said, "No, I don't want to wait. We've waited long enough. I want to make love to you." Maura kissed Jane hard as she slipped her hand under Jane to reach her bra clasp.

Jane moaned into the kiss, her back arching automatically to give Maura better access.

She tossed Jane's bra off the side of the bed as her eyes locked on Jane's newly exposed breasts. "I've said it before," she whispered, "but you're gorgeous." She didn't wait for a response before she wrapped her lips around Jane's right breast.

"Fuck," Jane gasped under her breath as Maura lavished her chest with love. She expected Maura to be good at sex, but this was better than anything she could have ever imagined, and they'd barely started the foreplay.

Both of Jane's hands found their way into Maura hair, holding her head close to her breast. It took everything in her not to squirm underneath Maura's touch, especially when her hand came up to play with Jane's other breast.

As she kissed across Jane's chest to provide the same attention to Jane's left breast while her hand played with Jane's right, Maura decided that she could do this forever. She loved the feeling of Jane withering beneath her, and she couldn't get enough of the sounds coming from Jane's lips.

Jane's body jerked as Maura tugged on her taught nipple with her teeth. She used the opportunity to pull Maura back into a passionate kiss. "Jeez, you're good at that," she mumbled against Maura's lips. "But it's my turn to look and touch." She expertly unclasped Maura's bra, pulling it away when it fell down her arms.

Maura chuckled, but she still sat up slightly, straddling Jane's hips in the process.

Jane reached up to cup Maura's breasts, testing the weight and feel of them in her hands. "I've wanted to do this for a long time," she admitted.

"I've noticed you looking at them," Maura said, her head falling back as she enjoyed the feeling of Jane's hands on her chest. "But I didn't know what it meant."

Jane snorted in laughter, slightly embarrassed that Maura had noticed her looking but too enthralled with what she was doing to care.

Maura's hips began grinding against Jane's pelvis without her permission. "Jane, I…" she tried, but her thoughts were driven from her head when Jane gave her nipples a tweak. "Shit," she gasped. She leaned forward to kiss Jane again. "I want to make love to you first," she said in between kisses. "Can I take your underwear off?"

Jane nodded vigorously. "Take yours off too," she requested as Maura moved off of her and hooked her fingers into the waistband of her underwear. Within seconds, both of their underwear had joined their other clothes on the floor.

They both moaned loudly when Maura laid her body on top of Jane's, their skin fully touching for the first time. Jane wrapped her arms around Maura's shoulders as they kissed. She was quickly losing herself in everything that was Maura.

Maura caressed Jane's hip with her right hand, eventually running her hand up and down the outside of her thigh. After a few minutes, she allowed her hand to slide up the inside of Jane's thigh. She smiled into their kiss when Jane's legs spread apart in anticipation of Maura's touch.

When her fingers finally found Jane's wet, warm center, Maura was the first to break the kiss, her head dropping to rest against Jane's shoulder. She groaned at the moisture she found waiting for her. It was the final confirmation of how much Jane wanted her that Maura didn't even realize she needed. She ran her finger along the length of Jane's slit before moving to circle her clit.

"Yessss," Jane hissed when Maura's fingers found her clit. Her hips bucked up against Maura's hand unashamedly. "Oh my god, yes."

Maura lifted her head to watch Jane's face as she increased the pace and pressure of her movements. Jane's head was tilted back, and her eyes were closed, and Maura loved watching the pleasure play out on her love's features. Maura slid two fingers back to Jane's opening, pausing as she asked, "Can I?"

"Yes," Jane answered instantly without opening her eyes.

Maura smiled to herself as she thrust two fingers into Jane, using her thumb to maintain pressure on her clit. She could already feel Jane's inner muscles twitching around her fingers. She curled her fingers against Jane's front wall as she moved in and out until she found the spot that clearly brought Jane the most pleasure – there was no mistaking the look on Jane's face.

Jane didn't even try to control her response as Maura worked her up quickly. She knew she wasn't going to last long. Between feeling like she had waited for this forever and Maura's skills, trying to hold back was a lost cause.

"Fuck, shit, Maur, I'm…I'm…I'm…" Jane whined.

"Come," Maura whispered.

And Jane did. She came hard. She came with Maura's name on her lips as pleasure pulsed through every cell in her body.

And Maura was absolutely certain that there was nothing better in this world than watching Jane come apart at her hands. There was absolutely no doubt in her mind that she wanted this for the rest of her life.

Maura continued her ministrations until every aftershock had left Jane's body. When she finally pulled out, she didn't even care about the mess as she pushed herself up to give Jane a proper kiss.

Jane couldn't catch her breath, but she wouldn't let that stop her from returning Maura's kiss. "You're…fucking…amazing…" Jane panted in between kisses.

"I love you," Maura said, smiling into the kiss.

"I love you, too," Jane replied as her hands moved to Maura's hips. She wasted no time, her left hand moving between Maura's legs.

"Fuck," Maura cried out in surprise when Jane's fingers found her clit. "I…I'm so close already. Please don't tease." Her hands moved to grip Jane's shoulders to hold herself up, and she squeezed her eyes shut as she let herself feel everything that Jane was doing to her.

"Ohhh," Maura groaned as Jane thrust into her. They quickly found a rhythm, Maura riding Jane's fingers as Jane met her thrust for thrust.

Jane's eyes remained glued to Maura's breasts as they bounced along with her movements. Her right hand was still on Maura's hip, holding her up.

Maura's head rolled back as heat flooded her body. Her movements became more and more erratic as they worked together towards her climax, and it didn't take long. Maura's entire body froze, her body arching forward as her hips thrust down on Jane's hand. Every muscle in her body spasmed - her toes curled, her legs clamped around Jane's hips, and her fingers dug into Jane's shoulders.

When the tension in her body finally released, Maura collapsed on top of Jane, but as always, Jane caught her.

Jane guided Maura back to the bed, lying along her side. She wrapped her arms around the still recovering woman before pulling the sheets over both of them.

Maura had just enough energy to drape her arm across Jane's waist and to hook her right leg over Jane's left as she snuggled into the embrace. Her breathing was still labored, and she hadn't yet opened her eyes, but she was so, so happy.

The last few days had been a rollercoaster of emotions, but she would relive it a million times if it meant getting to this moment. She had never felt safer or more content. There was no where she'd rather be.

"You were right," Maura mumbled against Jane's shoulder, where her head was resting.

"Huh?" Jane asked sleepily.

"Make-up sex was better than angry sex, but angry sex was pretty good, too," Maura admitted, smirking slightly when Jane started shaking with laughter under her.

"Just wait until we try celebratory sex," Jane countered.

"I can't wait," Maura agreed just before sleep pulled her under.

Jane laughed one more time before joining Maura in dreamland.

A/N: I actually think that Paddy told Maura that he would have shot Jane to help her forgive Jane (and that he wouldn't have actually shot her because he knew how much Jane meant to Maura), but the words at face-value worked better for this story.

Also, there will be more clothes inspired stories in this series (not necessarily directly related to this two-shot).
