Chapter 2: A Minor Setback
"Are we there yet?" Larry asked for the 417th time that trip. They had been driving for two hours, and it was already dark. "No, we are not there yet!" Bob replied. "And for the last time, I don't even know where we're going!"
"Well, why didn't you just say so, Bob?" Larry asked sincerely. "I got the map from that Arby's we stopped at."
"What? Let me see that!" Bob almost drove off the road trying to grab the piece of paper from Larry.
"Geez, Bob, you don't have to be so handsy" Larry complained.
"I don't have any hands!" Bob pointed out as he pulled the SUV over on the side of the road.
"Oh, you're right" Larry realized. Unfolding the piece of paper, Bob looked at it intensely, before putting it down and glaring at Larry. "This is a kid's menu," he said with an annoyed sigh, "not a map."
"Bob, I'm not stupid, the map's on the other side." Larry said smugly. Bob flipped the menu over with a glimmer of hope, before he fell back into despair. "Larry, this is a crossword puzzle!"
"Oh, that explains why the street names weren't filled in."
That was the last straw for Bob. "I can't believe this, I really can't believe this." he muttered through his teeth. "You drag me out of my warm hot tub, have me drive 200 miles through the snow in this beat-up piece of junk that doesn't even have a heater, force me to stop at Arby's instead of the Taco Bell that wasn't twenty minutes out of the way, and all this without even knowing where we were going!" Bob paused to gulp in air.
"Bob, please, I did you a favor by suggesting Arby's. They have the meats." Larry said, still smiling.
"AAAGGGHHHH!" Bob shouted before leaping out of his seat and tackling Larry out of the car. He didn't see the edge of the cliff before it was too late. "WoahwOaHwoAH" They both yelled, rolling down the snowy cliffside.
After an extremely uncomfortable landing, Bob got up and looked around. He was in a forest of snow-covered trees with no lights in sight. Bob gathered his wits before looking for Larry. He shouted, "Larry! Larry! Where are you?" A voice came through the darkness, "Uh, I'm not sure."
"What do you mean you're not sure?" Bob yelled, trying to pinpoint Larry's voice.
"Well, I can't see" Larry said, "but I think it's some sort of cave."
"How did you get in there without knowing?" Bob asked.
"I just followed the song, can't you hear it?" Larry replied.
"No, what do you mean?" Bob said, confused. "Never mind, just wait Larry, I'm coming to find you." After searching along the cliffside, he found the cave where Larry was. "Well, this is a nice mess you've gotten us in," Bob sarcastically announced once they were both inside. "I hope you're happy."
"Cheer up Bob, it couldn't get any worse." Larry said optimistically. "Besides, you pushed us off the cliff."
"Yes, but I didn't want to come in the first place," Bob replied, still wanting to have the last word. "Anyways, we'll have to sleep here tonight and try to find food in the morning."
When they were both lying down on opposite sides of the cave, Larry said "Bob, I'm sorry for forcing you to come."
"I forgive you, Larry, just don't do it again." Bob replied, still grumpy. "And Larry, I'm sorry for throwing us off the cliff."
"I forgive you Bob, good night" Larry answered.
"Good night, Larry" Bob said, a bit less grumpy. Then they both went to sleep, happier after being forgiven.
