A/N: Sorry for such a long wait everyone, I've been dealing with health issues and writer's block. I've got some of my muse back now, so hopefully it won't be hard to write the next couple chapters. As always, thank you for your reviews, they help with inspiring my muse.
I own nothing of Twilight.
Chapter 4
Jacob gripped the back of the chair hard enough that it gave a squeak of protest as his eyes stayed locked onto the twirling dancers. His jaw clenched angrily and he could feel his skin shuddering faintly, leaving him on the verge of losing control.
"Jake." Sam's voice behind him was worried, he saw the signs of Jacob fighting the phase and was trying to distract him.
"Sam…that's my sister." The chair gave another squeak and Jacob could feel the tendons and muscles in his back twitching rapidly.
"I know Jacob, but we can't just march up there and pull her off the stage. We just need to sit down and wait till it's done so you can talk to her." Sam's soothing tones calmed Jacob somewhat and he slowly relaxed his grip on the chair and forced himself to sit down, the tremors slowing as he took slow, deep breaths.
"Thanks Sam." He still felt tense and angry but he knew as long as he kept his eyes away from the stage he could keep himself calm until Rachel was done. His eyes swept over the table and was satisfied to see everyone was focusing on their drinks, out of respect for their Alpha. Well, all except Paul. He was still staring blankly at the stage; in fact Jacob was sure he hadn't moved at all, with the exception of breathing. Unfortunately he couldn't do anything but send a murderous glare at his pack mate which bounced harmlessly off the shield of oblivion that surrounded Paul.
"Not sure which one of you I should keep an eye on." Some mirth leaked into Sam's voice and Jacob tore his gaze away to see Sam fighting a small grin.
"Stuff it Uley." Jacob fought to smile to take the sting out of his words but it ended up more of a grimace and he signaled a waitress walking past. "If anyone even looks like he's going to touch her…"
Sam nodded and glanced at the stage. "Looks like they're finishing up. But don't move yet Jake, wait till she comes out."
Jacob nodded slightly and ordered another beer from the waitress as he drummed his fingers on the table. Even though the alcohol wouldn't have any effect on him he needed something to keep his hands busy. He heard a throat clear and looked up to see Seth's worried gaze. "Jake, I'm so sorry. I had no idea…"
He held up a hand to stop the young wolf's apology with a shake of his head. "It's okay Seth. You haven't seen her since you were a kid, there's no way you could've known it was her. Heck, I haven't seen her since I was twelve; I'm surprised I recognized her. I thought she was at college still, she never mentioned anything like this."
Sam glanced around the club and raised an eyebrow. "Yeah cause I could see why she would mention this on a call home to her father."
Jacob glared at him and chugged the beer the waitress brought him, his eyes wandering to the door that seemed to lead to the dressing rooms. He straightened in his chair slightly when it opened and several girls that he recognized from Rachel's number came sauntering out. His eyes carefully scanned the still scantily clad women until his eyes locked on a familiar face. Slowly he stood and made his way through the maze of tables, keeping the back of Rachel's head in view as he followed her to the bar.
He hadn't seen his sister in several years, she'd come home for Christmas for a very brief visit about a year before he and the others had phased and had been making excuses ever since. He was glad for that, now knowing that Paul had imprinted on her and no doubt she would have been trapped at the Rez for the rest of her life had she come back and run into him.
But he still couldn't believe that she was doing something like this, he thought that she had gotten a full scholarship at school and didn't have to worry about working. As he approached her he hesitated, knowing she probably wouldn't even recognize him, and his gaze caught the reflection of Paul behind him and he spun with a glare. "You get back to the table, the last thing I need is Rachel freaking out because you're staring at he like a love struck idiot."
Paul shot him a mild glare and backed off, leaving Jacob to run a hand over his face in frustration. "I am never taking a vacation again…"
Before he could turn around a hand on his elbow and a familiar voice spoke from behind him. "Hey there handsome, buy a hard working girl a drink?"
He turned and watched in mild amusement as Rachel's eyes widened and she gaped in shock and horror. "Jacob?"
"That'd be me sis. Something you need to tell me?" He crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow, waiting in silence as he watched her mentally scramble to come up with some kind of explanation. Closing her mouth with a look of defiance she turned on her heel and stormed away, heading toward the dressing rooms. Jacob glared at her back and stormed after her, muttering under his breath. "Oh no you don't…"
Catching up to her he gently grabbed her arm and spun her around, lessening the glare when he saw the look of fear in her eyes. "Rach, what happened? I thought you were going to school for your teaching degree, not working in some night club."
"I am! During the day… But I had to do something to pay the bills and this is one of the few things that pays well and works around my school. And besides, it's fun and I'm good at it! But you can't tell dad, he won't get it. Please Jake." She crossed her arms over her dressing gown and Jacob shook his head as he rubbed the back of his neck, already feeling the beginning of a headache. Before he could say anything he heard one of his brothers come up behind him and Sam's voice spoke softly.
"Hi Rachel. Jacob, can I speak to you for a moment?"
Rachel turned red as she recognized Sam and Jacob sidled closer to her to help shield her from any other prying eyes that might be trying to leer at his sister. He gave a faint nod that he knew Sam would see and glanced at Rachel. "Go put something on and then meet us at our table."
She nodded, shooting another indecipherable look at Sam and hurried through the dressing room door. Jacob took a deep breath, half tempted to give the order to all head back to La Push, dragging Rachel kicking and screaming by Paul no doubt, when he heard a raised female voice coming from the direction of the bar. "I said that's your limit, now go sit or I'll personally haul your ass out of here!"
He cocked his head, wondering why the voice sounded so familiar, when he noticed the color drain from Sam's face and saw him staring towards the bar like he'd seen a ghost. "Sam? You ok?"
He didn't answer, instead taking slow steps to the back of the club, leaving Jacob no choice but to follow in confusion. They approached the crowded bar, Sam peering over the patrons' heads until he pushed himself to the front, Jacob a step behind him. When he saw the owner of the voice his eyes widened and he heard Sam whisper quietly "Leah…"
A/N: Sorry to leave you on another cliff but couldn't resist. Surprise! Couple more twists in this chapter. Let me know what you think!
