"You didn't think I was finished with you, did you Doctor Reid?"
Doyle.
"You're dead. This isn't real."
"Are you sure about that? Can you be truly sure you were told the truth about what happened? Because currently I'm inside your mind so I know what you're thinking."
"I guess I can't know absolutely yet. But I trust Derek, Penelope, and Rossi. They wouldn't lie to me."
"You don't even believe that. Pathetic. No wonder it was so easy to break you Doctor Reid."
"You didn't break me!"
"Really? Then why are you in so many pieces? Why am I here?"
"Leave me alone!"
"I'll be back to see you again soon, count on it Doctor Reid."
Spencer wakes up in a cold sweat, taking deep, shuddering breaths. He sits up, wincing in pain from his injuries. He'd only been asleep for a few hours, and knows he won't be getting anymore sleep tonight. It's been a few days since he started staying at Rossi's, but this is the first true nightmare he's had. Maybe that's because he's no longer as exhausted as before.
"Was it a nightmare Dr. Reid?" The voice of Doyle echoes. Spencer looks around fearfully, before realizing it's all in his head.
Before he knows it, morning has arrived and he knows he probably looks like he got no sleep, which is going to worry everyone. And that'll mean they won't leave him alone. He's allowed to use crutches if he is moving short distances, so he hobbles into the bathroom in order to make himself look at least a little less sleep deprived.
Thankfully since it has been almost two weeks since he was rescued, the team has gone back to work which gives him much needed time to himself. This is good and bad, because he doesn't like being the center of attention and feeling weak, but after a while of being alone with his own thoughts it's no longer as enjoyable. Penelope stops by often to check in on him when the team is out on cases, and Spencer hangs out with Rossi and Derek when they are around as well.
Penelope is the first to witness some of the other impacts of recent events when she visits one day while the team is on a local case.
"Helloooo Doctor Reid!" she says jokingly with her usual cheerful demeanor, but freezes as Spencer flinches at her words.
"Spencer what's wrong?"
Knowing he probably can't avoid telling her, he decides to tell her the truth,"S-so when Doyle t-tortured m-me, he k-kept calling me D-doctor r-reid. I'm t-trying to g-get past it."
"Oh Spencer," she says as she sits next to him on the bed and wraps him in a tight hug before adding,"But I can tell there's more bugging you, so spill boy wonder."
"J-just haven't been ge-getting much s-sleep lately."
"Gonna tell me why you haven't been getting sleep?"
"D-dreams."
"Wanna talk about them?"
"Not r-really. M-maybe later," he says, which seems to appease her.
"Talked to anyone else?"
"J-just you, M-morgan, R-rossi, and a b-bit w-with Hotch."
"Do you think you'll want to talk to the others again?"
"I h-honestly don't k-know. I m-miss t-them b-both a lot, b-but I j-just can't d-do it y-yet."
"I understand what you mean."
"B-but you k-know what r-really s-sucks? I r-really want t-to t-talk to JJ. S-she was my b-best friend and t-the p-person I r-really want to t-talk to a-about all this," he says, crying as Penelope holds him.
"Oh Spencer. I know. It sucks and it's unfair. But I know it'll get better soon, I'm positive," she says to which he just doesn't respond, just stays in her embrace as he cries. They talk a bit more about other things before she leaves and that night he falls asleep quickly.
"Good to have you back, Doctor Reid!" Doyle says, walking into Spencer's vision.
"Leave me alone."
"Now, now Doctor, you should know by now that if I can't physically finish you off, I can do it mentally, which means I'm here to stay. And maybe tear apart the rest of your team in the process. My goal hasn't changed, it just needed to be altered a bit," he says, laughing.
"You won't win."
"I'm in your head, so I know how you really feel. You can't lie to me. I also know every way to completely tear you apart now Doctor Reid. So how about we start with a certain blonde?"
"Stop."
"Now, now Doctor, is that any way to act when we have guests?" Doyle says, before JJ appears in front of Doyle, who is holding a gun to her head.
"This isn't real. She's not really here."
"I doubt that knowledge will make this any better to witness. Maybe it won't be so bad for you, given your current feelings towards Agent Jareau," Doyle says, laughing maniacally.
"Spenceā¦" JJ starts, holding back tears as she looks into Spencer's eyes.
"Doyle you son of a bitch!"Spencer screams.
"Spence, why did you let him do this?"
"W-what? I didn't!"
"You should be in control here, but you're not. You're not strong enough to beat him, even in your own mind!"
"This isn't real!"
"You're right about that Doctor Reid, but we both know everything that's been said is true," Doyle taunts,"anyways, it's almost time for you to wake up, so let's wrap this up."
"No, ple-BLAM!" Spencer starts before Doyle fires and JJ drops to the floor.
Spencer crawls over to her body and cradles her in his arms, sobbing and apologizing.
"See you soon Doctor Reid," Doyle says before walking off, leaving Spencer there until he wakes up.
