**A few notes** First, this story contains spoilers from manga that have not yet appeared in the anime. Secondly, while I place it after provisional licensing and before the Todoroki family reveal in the manga, not all of the canon details fit perfectly, so don't expect it to be completely canon compliant. Warning for M/M content, Bakugo's language and suggestions (not descriptions) of kink between some adult characters.**

Chapter 1: Sacrifices
A soft, reflective sigh escaped Midoriya Izuku's lips as he finished the last of his assigned homework and straightened in his chair. Weary eyes glanced at the clock on his desk and he felt a twinge of guilt throb in his belly.
Oh man, I feel kinda bad. Todoroki said he wanted to talk to me about something. I was supposed to meet up with Iida and him at dinner, but I had so much homework to catch up on after all of the field work that made me miss classes…
…though, if I'm totally honest, I suppose it could have waited.
He glanced out the window at the rising moon that shone brightly on the darkening horizon.
Okay, the truth is that I've been feeling sort of flustered by Shoto lately.
He nibbled at his lower lip and sighed again.
It's not his fault, really. He hasn't done anything on purpose to make me feel this way. It's my fault. Lately, when I see him coming towards me, when I hear him say my name, or just when I think about him, I get this weird feeling in my stomach and I can feel I'm blushing. Shoto doesn't act like he notices, but he's not the kind of person to miss details like that. I think he and I are both aware.
I like him.
Not just as a friend and not just as a fellow hero. I like Shoto in a more romantic kind of way. I…I think that maybe Shoto likes me too, but…I have no idea what to do about that.
There are things that I haven't told Shoto, all of the truth about All Might and me. I haven't told him the truth about my powers and the extra training I receive in my quest to inherit One for All completely. Kacchan knows, but no one else does…even though Shoto sensed right away that things were different between All Might and me. He knows something's going on, and if we start to get closer, I'll feel more and more pressure to tell him.
I promised after letting it slip to Kacchan, I wouldn't tell anyone else. But if Shoto and I get closer and I don't tell him when Kacchan already knows…I don't know if that's fair. People who love each other should…
Midoriya flinched sharply as the thought radiated in his head.
"People who love each other should…" he whispered, as though trying the thought on for size.
To his horror, it fit far too perfectly.
Ever since the sports festival, I've felt it. It's in his voice when he says anything at all to me. It's in the way he always asks me what I think and he supports me one hundred percent. It's in the times when he can see I'm struggling and he talks me through my tumble of thoughts, so I can see clearly. He comforts me when I'm sad.
A little sob escaped him and he rested his face in his hands.
I like him.
I really, really like him, and I think Shoto likes me! That should make me happy, but all I feel right now is guilty. I feel guilty because it's really not right to keep secrets from him, but I can't tell him what I promised All Might I wouldn't. If we start a different relationship and I don't tell him, then it's going to feel wrong that I'm keeping secrets from him. If he finds out later that I told Kacchan but not him, it could make him think that I feel closer to Kacchan, and that could cause jealousy.
And that's not even the worst of it.
I look at what's happening to All Might and I know I'm up against a horrible villain that could hurt me badly like that or even kill me. If I get closer to Shoto, he'll want even more to protect me. He can't help it. He's a hero and he's super strong. It's just that his power isn't the one that's meant to withstand All for One. And if he feels like he needs to protect me, then he could get himself killed trying.
A hard shiver passed through Midoriya's body as worrisome visions danced in his head.
"MIDORIYA!"
He knew by the panicked sound of his friend's voice that it was already too late for him to move out of the way of the massive nomu that was reaching for him. He twisted his body and positioned his arm and fist to strike, but hadn't reached his target when he heard the sickening crunch of impacting bodies, mingled with Shoto's pained gasp, and he felt an explosion of intense heat. For one frozen moment, Todoroki held the beast at bay, giving him time to move into a better position to strike back, but then the nomu screeched maniacally, grabbing Shoto by the throat and…
Midoriya startled at the sound of a knocking on his door.
"Midoriya?"
Midoriya swallowed hard, his hands clenching against the still radiating vision. He heard the sound of his friend shifting his weight outside the door, then a little sigh. What surprised him most, though, was what came next.
"Midoriya, I know you're there. It's okay if you don't feel like talking, but can you at least let me know if I did something wrong?"
What?
He thinks he did something wrong?
No!
"I…don't think you ever came down for dinner, so I brought you something. I'll just…leave it outside the door."
Midoriya's heart pounded painfully and he felt his head spinning from the fact that he had forgotten all about breathing. Outside the door, there was a faint rustling, then the quiet, slow sound of Todoroki's fading footsteps.
"Wait."
The word escaped him in a whisper, then he managed it more loudly.
"W-wait!"
He threw the door open and almost tripped over the paper bag his friend had left. Clenching his teeth, he ran down the hallway and skidded to a stop in front of the open elevator door. Shoto stood inside, his head turned away. He flinched visibly as Midoriya's hand thumped against the elevator door, stopping it from closing.
"Wait," Midoriya said more softly, "Sorry, I should have come to talk to you earlier…and I should have answered the door."
"It's okay," Shoto sighed, still keeping his head turned away, "I get it. I was making you feel uncomfortable, so you are avoiding me. I will…"
"No," Midoriya interrupted, "that's not it."
He paused, shaking a little as he drew in a stinging breath.
"You didn't do anything wrong."
"Of course I did," Shoto countered in an even lower than usual voice, "If everything was okay, then you wouldn't be avoiding me."
"Todoroki…"
"Or distancing yourself."
Midoriya swallowed hard around the lump in his throat.
"Sh-Shoto."
A long moment of silence passed between the two, then it was broken by the small sound of the elevator bell objecting to the door being held open too long.
"C'mon," Midoriya said solemnly, "we can talk in my room."
Shoto shivered and bit at his upper lip for a moment.
"Okay."
Midoriya stepped back, making room as Shoto exited the elevator and the doors closed, leaving them in the quiet hallway. They walked back to Midoriya's room, side by side and Midoriya paused to pick up the bag of food before they entered.
"Thanks for bringing me something," Midoriya said, giving his friend a quivering smile, "I was just about to go to the vending machine since I missed dinner."
"You could have just told me that you wanted to eat alone," Shoto pointed out, "Midoriya, if you don't feel like talking or something, you can just tell me that. I'm not going to get mad at you."
"No," the green-haired youth agreed somberly, "you wouldn't do that, I know. But, I also know that saying that to you would hurt you."
"No, it wouldn't."
"I think we both know it would."
Shoto looked back at him silently.
"The thing is, you are always kind and understanding to me," Midoriya recalled, the images rushing into his mind of his friend's amiable smile and the way Shoto always supported him and came to his defense, "Ever since that time at the sports festival, you've been a really good friend."
Shoto drew in a long, slow breath, considering his words carefully.
"I value our friendship, Midoriya," he said finally, "and I don't want…anything…to ruin it."
"Yeah," Midoriya answered in a regretful tone, "it's the same with me. So, no matter what happens next, I don't want to lose you as a friend."
"And you won't," Shoto promised, "no matter what happens next."
They gazed at each other wordlessly as Midoriya's hand pushed the door closed. Shoto stood perfectly still, watching him as he gathered his nerve.
"What did you want to talk to me about?" Midoriya asked more calmly.
"Maybe you should eat something first," Shoto suggested, nodding in the direction of the bag in Midoriya's hand.
The green-haired youth looked down at the bag as though just remembering it was there, then he shook his head and set it on the bed.
"I'll save it for later."
"I know you're hungry," Shoto insisted, "I can hear your stomach growling. Really, sit down with me and just eat something first."
To Midoriya's surprise, it did feel good to sit down and attend to the meal his friend had brought. Shoto sat down beside him, talking more casually with him while he ate and accepting the little bites of food Midoriya offered him.
I feel like such an idiot. Even now, when I can tell he really wants to talk, he's trying to make me feel more relaxed first. I don't get why he's doing that. He doesn't have to be so nice about this. We both know what's going on. I know what he's going to tell me and I think he already knows how I'm going to respond.
This is so hard.
"Midoriya!" Shoto exclaimed suddenly.
Damn it!
Why am I crying? The person I like is trying his hardest to tell me that he likes me and I'm…sad? I guess because I know what I have to do and I don't want to hurt him. But, if I don't do this, he'll make himself not ask what he knows I won't answer and he'll throw himself in front of me, to keep me out of danger, even if that means…!
"You're thinking about this too much."
Midoriya's eyes widened as Shoto leaned towards him and kissed him very lightly on the lips, then climbed to his feet and headed for the door. As he reeled and tried to find his voice again, his friend's words both reassured him and stung painfully.
"It's strange. I know you and Bakugo have some secret that you're keeping, and I know it's about your relationship with All Might. But that's not what bothers me."
"Shoto?"
"What bothers me is that, after all we've been through this year already, you don't believe in me."
"What? No! That's not true," Midoriya shouted.
"But it is. I like you, and it's obvious you like me too. But, you don't want to be involved in a relationship, so I asked myself why you would do that. If you care for me, then the most likely reason you wouldn't want to be in a relationship with me is because you think I can't take care of myself."
"No, I know you can. I just…"
"I get it," Shoto said patiently, "When the year started, I was stronger than you, so you weren't worried about me getting hurt looking out for you. My presence was reassuring to you. It's clear that you've become the stronger one now, which would make me a liability to you. I know you're worried about what happens when we encounter really powerful enemies, like the nomu and Shigaraki."
Midoriya's jaw and hands clenched tightly and he gave no answer.
"I even suppose you are right to be worried. They are strong enemies and we are taking risks every time we fight them. Just realize that pushing me away isn't going to stop the danger. Midoriya, whether we take the next step or not, both our lives are going to be at risk constantly. It comes with being heroes. It's not going to change if you push me away."
He's right.
Tears welled up in the corners of his eyes and rolled down his flushed cheeks. He felt warm, strong arms wrap around him and his friend's comforting scent filled his senses as he sobbed silently into Shoto's shoulder. They remained tightly bound for several minutes before the powerful emotion ebbed and Midoriya sniffed and pulled himself free. His teary eyes looked into Shoto's, then he froze, staring at the damp trails on his normally stoic classmate's face.
"Shoto, I…"
The sound of their cell phone alerts cut him off and the two removed their devices and read the message.
Emergency meeting in 1-A. Please report immediately for your assignment.
"C'mon," Shoto urged his classmate, "we'll talk more when we get back, okay?"
He started to turn away, only to be brought back around and shoved against the wall. Midoriya surged forward, engaging Shoto's surprised mouth, with a long, rough, penetrating kiss.
"Yeah," he said, pulling away and wiping his mouth as Shoto reeled for a moment, then steadied himself, "we'll talk then. I promise."
The two brushed away the remaining dampness on their faces and ran out the door, heading for their classroom.

High atop the skeletal frame of a building in progress, two dark figures crouched and a third stood nearby, watching as the sun set and darkness arrived. The first, a thin patchwork of a man and the second slight and shadowy, the edges of a comely body slightly blurred, as though sliding out of focus, flowing grey clothing moving with the light breeze. A taller man, whose body was cloaked in an oddly glowing purple mist waited silently behind them. The patchwork man smirked at his partner in crime and glanced in the direction of the nearby UA high school.
"So? How did it go, Furi? Are they coming?" he asked.
"Of course they are," the slighter person answered in a voice as smoky as their form, "The principal and all of the local heroes are focused on the threat to the downtown area. It was easy enough for our spy to make the right manipulations so that the elite students would be sent."
"And I'm sure he will be one of the ones sent," the man said, rubbing the stitches along his jaw.
"Yes, Dabi," the other assured him, "Shoto will be dispatched with the group. It's almost a foregone conclusion, considering how much stronger he's grown."
"Good. I have unfinished business with him."
His smoky companion's luminous, catlike golden eyes fixed on him, studying the light and dark patches that marked his body.
"Your vengeance on Endeavor has waited a long time," they acknowledged.
"Yes, it has," Dabi agreed, narrowing his eyes to focus on the place slightly ahead of them where the confrontation would take place, "That despicable monster and his precious masterpiece have been a thorn in my side for too long."
"Just do not forget," said the purple misted man as he followed Dabi's gaze to the clearing and ravine ahead of them, "I am not here for your personal vendetta. My only reason for accompanying you is because the death of both Todoroki Enji and Todoroki Shoto will advance our leader's plans. I will assist you in taking the boy tonight simply because it is the quickest route to achieving success in killing Todoroki Enji."
"Yeah, thanks Kurogiri. I've got it," Dabi said dryly, shaking his head and smirking at Furi as their comrade moved to take up a position slightly further away.
Furi moved closer, letting their smoke blur the sight and sound of them enough so that Kurogiri would not hear their next words.
"This is a dangerous game you play with them," Furi commented, reaching over to squeeze Dabi's hand.
The touch of the other villain's smoke and hand triggered a little flurry of mental images that he read as a quiet warning.
"This could very easily go wrong."
"Yeah, it could," Dabi agreed, tightening his hand on his partner's for a moment, then leaning over to kiss the other's frowning lips, "I like living dangerously, don't you?"
Furi's tongue slipped out to run lightly along Dabi's upturned lips, then dipped inside his mouth, both to taste and to offer a little promise of what would follow their current venture.
"I do."
"Just remember to let me get their attention and Kurogiri will take care of transporting the kid, once we've got him. I've got some fireworks planned, so be careful not to get in the way. Your jobs are to stay out of the fighting and to get control of the brat's mind right away. If Shoto has time to think, he'll fight, and that's not what we want here."
"Don't worry," Furi promised, their cloudy eyes glinting in the black centers, "I will handle him."

Bakugo Katsuki scowled as he stomped into the 1-A classroom with a yawning Kirishima on his heels. He glared at Aizawa and the two other students standing in front of him.
"All right," he growled, stopping as he reached them, "whoever the hell is causing trouble had better be ready for a major ass kicking! Whose ass are we kicking?"
Midoriya and Todoroki exchanged glances and Aizawa's frown deepened.
"First of all, you need to remember that your provisional licenses do not give you permission to do anything that you are not given explicit orders to do by a pro hero," he scolded the angry youth, "That being said, we've detected a disturbance outside the boundaries of the school, but nearby. All of the local pros are taking care of a raid in the downtown area, where Shigaraki is believed to be holding an important meeting. We believe all of his strongest supporters will be there."
"So, what does that have to do with us?" Bakugo demanded.
"With the local heroes focused on that raid, the authorities need you to address the presence that was sensed near the school. Our school security is needed here, to ensure that no one enters the grounds. I will be taking the three of you…"
The dark-clad instructor was suddenly cut off as All Might's deep voice boomed through the doorway and the retired hero entered in his hero form.
"And I will be there as well!" he announced.
Aizawa and the four students flinched as the former hero suddenly expelled blood from his mouth and returned to his thin, weaker form.
"As a spectator only," he sighed.
"That's really not necessary," Aizawa complained, "It's not suspected to be anything we can't handle. You should save your energy."
"Nonsense," All Might countered, waving him off, "If it's just a low level spy or thug, you don't need to worry about me. Even though I don't fight, I am still a teacher, and I…"
"Fine, come along if you want," Aizawa interrupted, "Just stay close to me and if there's trouble, stay out of it, all right?"
"You've got it," All Might chuckled.
"Great," Aizawa said dryly, "Let's go."
