Lucy woke up with a groan; her head was killing her.

Actually her entire body was hurting. She had never once, in her entire life, felt so sore and achy. Her head pounded persistently with a headache, her neck throbbed in agony, her shoulders were sore as if she had been carrying heavy rocks for years on end, and the rest of her body felt heavier than lead. She could die and still be in his pain.

Something floated above her head and she blinked repeatedly to make sure she wasn't just dreaming. Nope, definitely not, there was definitely a blue cat hovering over her.

"Lucy!" it cried out. "You're all right!"

It knew her name! How did this blue cat know her name?! Was it a new spirit? But surely she would remember a spirit that she made a contract with? She wasn't some heartless cow who used keys like tools, they were her friends (no matter how much Aquarius disagreed on that notion).

"Natsu!" the blue cat shouted. "Lucy is awake!"

Lucy struggled to sit up as a rather cute, pink-haired, boy rushed to her side. "Lucy!" he sighed in relief before he suddenly yanked her towards him. She struggled against him as he held her tightly against his chest and nuzzled her hair. Who the fuck was this weirdo? And why was his sniffing her? "Thank God," he murmured into her hair, "I thought you were never going to wake up."

Lucy desperately sought out the words that would get this stranger to let her go. While she couldn't find any, she tried to pull away using all of her strength (which really wasn't much) but this Natsu bloke just held on even tighter, she felt incredibly suffocated.

"I'm sorry," she mumbled against this very naked, but damn, it was nicely built, chest, "but who are you?"

Oh…it looks like she found those magical words as he let her go to look down at her in horror.

Lucy had amnesia.

She had fucking amnesia.

She didn't remember anything! Not a single thing from the moment the weirdo thanked him for something he didn't do to the point he stupidly wasn't there for her and let her crash into that fucking, stupid, in the way, tree! Fuck! If he hadn't been busy fighting the other bandits he wouldn't have neglected his duty in protecting her and none of this would be happening right now. How can his best friend, his partner, his….well everything, forget who he was? It wasn't right!

"Look, stop whinging about it you brat," Porlyusica snapped. "There's nothing we can do. Her brain is still healing from that knock and if we interfere with that she might never remember, or worse her head would explode."

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Happy screamed right in their ears. This caused Natsu to accidentally let a fireball slip, Lucy to jump and crash into a tray of medical supplies, Master to fall out of his chair, and Porlyuscia's eye to twitch. "DON'T LET LUCY'S HEAD EXPLODE!"

"DON'T DISRUPT MY MEDICAL ROOM. OUT, NOW!"

And that was how they ended up in the bar of the guild, Lucy staring at everything in wide-eyed wonder, while everyone re-introduced themselves. Lucy screamed at the sight of Gray walking around starkers, acted nervous round the likes of Laxus, Gajeel, and Juvia (who was sending really mixed signals with her hugs and tears, and then her glares and threats of death), got really shy round everyone else – especially Mirajane, who Lucy kept staring as if she was the best food in the world. Which really annoyed Natsu.

Actually Natsu didn't like the hero worshipping way Lucy was looking at everyone, at all. "But Natsu," Happy looked up from his fish, "that's how she used to look at everyone when she first came here."

"Tch," Natsu gritted his teeth, "she did not. Lucy, our Lucy, would never look at anyone like that ever. She's too cool for that."

"Not that cool," Happy muttered, "she still looks at you like that all the time. It's really icky."

The back of Natsu's neck turned a brighter pink than his hair while his cheeks had a slight flush to them. For one brief moment Happy thought that Natsu had gotten sick with a fever or something but then common sense and logic kicked in and Happy knew the truth.

"Tee hee," he giggled, "you liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike her!"

Lucy couldn't believe that she was a member of Fairy Tail. She couldn't believe that the Mirajane Strauss, the most gorgeous and powerful mage in the world, knew Lucy's favourite milkshake and makes it for her. She couldn't believe that Tatiana, the most terrifying and strongest female mage, was wailing how Lucy's head injury was her fault for not being there and Lucy had the right to punch her.

"Err…no thank you," Lucy edged away a little and bumped into Elfman Strauss who was weeping. "Erm," she murmured feeling a little worried. "Are you okay?"

"Lucy, you're bravery with your head injury is MANLY!"

"Thank you?"

"Don't thank him," Evergreen snapped, "It'll only encourage him. Come on, you big lug." She dragged Elfman away harshly but Lucy couldn't help but notice that she was simultaneously rubbing his arm gently.

Lucy pinched herself.

She was still here.

"I can't believe it," she whispered.

"I know," Mirajane sighed, "My brother is dating. Period. I never thought it would happen."

"Oh," Lucy flushed slightly, "I didn't mean that. I meant, I can't believe I'm here. In Fairy Tail. I never thought I would be strong enough to pass the tests."

Mirajane cocked her head at Lucy. "Tests?" she repeated bewilderedly.

"Yeah, you're initiation tests," Lucy laughed nervously, "so I can prove myself as an asset. I honestly thought I would never pass them."

"Lucy…" Mirajane blinked in confusion. "there are no initiation tests. All you have to do is just come in and ask."

"WHAT?!" Lucy screamed. "You mean I wasted a good part of the year trying to get strong for some tests that I didn't even have to do?! I could have come here much sooner? But how do you know I'm even worthy to join. If you just let people randomly walk in and join, how do you know….?"

"See!" Laxus grumbled. "I told you all we needed to be more ex-"

Laxus was promptly silenced by Freed, who uncharacteristically elbowed him in the stomach, "Shut up!" he hissed. "I know what you're trying to say but you're just going to come across a rude, mean, pompous, pig."

Fortunately for them, Lucy didn't pay any of them attention as her keys caught it instead. She was sitting on the floor (shock, despair that she wasted time, and awe took over her sense) and was holding them up before her eyes, which were wide and brimming with an innocent awe no one had seen before.

Lucy couldn't believe she had ten of the twelve golden zodiac keys.

"How…?" she whispered to herself. "Oh my God do I even have contracts with these spirits?!" she wailed to herself. "I must be a terrible master if I can't even remember them! I have to make new contracts!"

And that was when Lucy summoned Loke.

"Lucy!" Loke cried out cheerfully as he moved to hug her. He immediately halted to a stop when he caught sight of her face. "My love! What is the matter? Did Natsu do something stupid again?"

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!"

"THAT YOU'RE A MORON!"

As always, a fight broke out between Natsu and Gray, not that anyone was paying them any attention as they watched Lucy bow to Loke. "I am very sorry Leo," she murmured, "I don't remember our contract and I-"

"Hush love," Loke placed a finger on Lucy's lips while his other hand entwined itself into Lucy's hair. "We have never needed a contract. After all we are lovers."

Lucy would have screamed at this if it wasn't for the fact a dark, evil, aura appeared behind them and she screamed at that instead. So did Loke, like a little girl, and the pair of them clung to one another until Erza grabbed Loke by the collar of his shirt.

"Loke," she growled furiously, "are you trying to take advantage of Lucy?"

"Erm…."

"Prepare to die!"

"Nooooooooooooooooooo!" Loke screamed as he tried to desperately disappear back to the spirit world. "I'm too beautiful to die!"

"Erm….Erza-san?" Lucy called out gently. "He hasn't taken advantage. I know spirits and celestial mages cannot be in a relationship."

"Damnit!" Loke cured to himself. "I had hoped she learnt that after I tempted her and not before we met! There goes my plans!"

Everyone who heard this either sweat-dropped at Loke's sheer stupidity or looked on at him in disgust. It is needless to say no one had helped when Erza decided to teach him a lesson about why he shouldn't think with just his boy parts.

In fact when he finally did escape to the spirit world no one helped them there either. Virgo even greeted him with a slap on her mistress' behalf.

Natsu followed Lucy to the graveyard with a terrible sense of Deja Vu and the same heavy dread weighing in his stomach. How do I comfort her? He thought sadly as he watched Lucy's gold hair swish round her shoulders. What the hell can I say that will make this better?

It had been three days since had had woken up with amnesia (Natsu really hated that fucking word. It has ruined everything) and she still remembered nothing. It didn't change a single thing, Levy sat with Lucy and talked about books still, Juvia still glowered at her when she got within a ten foot radius of Gray, and Natsu still hung out with her. On the surface you would think nothing had changed….but it had.

Lucy was so…so…skittish around everyone. Like she didn't believe they were really her friends. It was really, really, hurtful and sad, and Natsu wanted to rage, scream, and cry, and then shake her till she remembered but then Happy would remind him that they couldn't or Lucy's head would explode.

Anyway, Cana took a turn at prodding Lucy's memory. She tried to get Lucy to remember Tenrou Island and the adventure. "Come on Lucy Heartfilla!" Cana cried out. "How can you not remember our epic partnership? We were far more cool and powerful team than you and Natsu could ever be."

"Like hell you – Lucy?" Natsu cut off his own furious tirade when he caught sight of Lucy's pale face. "What's wrong? Are you sick? Did you see Gray naked again? That makes anyone sick."

"WHAT WAS THAT YOU SMOKING MORON?!"

"NO ONE WAS TALKING TO YOU ICE CONE!" Natsu bellowed back before he grabbed Lucy by the shoulders and shook her just a little bit. Nothing too dangerous that might have her head fall off or something. "C'mon Luce," he grumbled, "I can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong!"

"H-H-Heartfilla!" Lucy choked out. "How did you know? You can't….please don't tell anyone!"

Cana and Natsu's eyes widened. "Lucy," they both muttered in concern. "Oh sweetie," Cana carried on as realisation sunk in very quickly. "We already been there and done that. We all know about your family wealth, have done since your father hired Phantom Lord."

And that's when everyone sat down and told Lucy the story. Juvia wept and wailed, and begged for forgiveness which Lucy very hesitatingly gave (as Juvia terrified her with her choking ability), Gajeel just grunted and looked away the entire time, and Happy totally exaggerated Natsu's heroic, but what he would do for anyone, not just Lucy, rescue of her which did not help as he decided to go into great detail how Natsu's face landed in Lucy's breasts.

(Natsu has bruises where he should never have bruises as a gift from ALL of the girls in the guild who decided to defend Lucy's honour. Telling them that this happened years ago and it was too late to punish him did not help at all!)

Lucy had then burst into tears once the story was finished. "I'm sorry!" she cried out. "I'm so, so, sorry! This is all my fault. I'll leave at once. He'll come back. I know he will and I can't let him hurt any of you ever again."

"Lucy, don't cry! It's not manly!" Elfman shouted over everyone's protests. "You have nothing to fear, we're all MAN enough to protect ourselves and each other. Besides there's nothing you're unmanly father can do to us now that he's dead- ARGH!"

In an attempt to shut Elfman up, Natsu had set his hair on fire, and strangely enough Evergreen helped by waving her fan to spread the flames. Mirajane did nothing to save Elfman as she just stomped on his foot, and Lisanna did the same on the other….

But it was too late, and Lucy had tears running down her face for an entirely different reason.

And that was how they ended up walking on this path again. Lucy was carrying a bouquet of flowers and Natsu followed numbly, uncertain at what he could do to make her feel better, but too stubborn to hide and leave her to it.

"Lucy…"

She ignored him and carried on, and he continued to follow her, as he waited for her to turn to him and cry once again. She stood by both her parents' graves in silence for what felt like hours and hours while he stood there helpless as before unable to do anything useful to help her. Fuck! He hated feeling like this!

"I'm all alone now," she whispered, "all my family is gone."

He grabbed at her then. He had completely lost his patience and snatched her without a single thought, turned her to face him, and pinched her cheek harshly. "Ouch!" Lucy cried out. "Natsu! What the-"

"You are not alone," he said sternly. He stared right into her wide brown orbs that widened even further. For one brief moment he was certain he was talking to his Lucy and not the Lucy he knew before. "You have a family. You have me, and Happy, and Erza, and the rest of the guild. We are your family."

"Natsu…"

Her lip wobbled a little bit and her eyes filled with tears instantaneously. "Fuck!" he cursed. "I didn't mean to make you cry even more!"

She laughed just as wobbly as her lip moved and she flung her arms round him. "I know," she said into his shoulder. He clung to her tightly because for the last few days he hadn't been able to touch her properly. Not without her flinching and stepping away, but right now she was clinging to him as if she was his lifeline and he was clinging to her because she was his lifeline. "Thank you, Natsu," she whispered into his neck. Just like she used to.

He was going to get her back. One way or another, he will.

Until then he will just hold her.

It had been two weeks and despite the fact Lucy still couldn't remember a single thing, she still had rent to pay, and so Erza decided the whole team should go on a job.

It was supposed to be a simple one with a large reward but then there turned out to be more to it that it first appeared, and the next thing Lucy knew she and the others uncover a conspiracy with a band of demons and were in the fiercest battle for their lives. Wendy was knocked out, Gray found himself pinned to the ground, Erza had broken her leg, and Natsu was struggling to fight back.

Lucy, much to her shame, was huddled in a bush. Natsu had pushed her in there and no one would let her get out, something about how she didn't remember to fight. Which was ridiculous, she wasn't the strongest fighter in the world but she knew how to defend herself and use a weapon. Regardless, no one would let her fight and now Natsu was against three demons by himself.

One landed a blow and he flew back onto the ground…and that was when something inside her snapped.

She suddenly felt filled to the brim with some sort of divine power. It was like when she summoned a spirit only so much more. Her mouth moved on its own, the world seemed different to her eyes, she could see spirits in all shapes and forms all over the place, and her voice echoed around her.

"Survey the heavens, open the heavens, all the stars far and wide, show me thy appearance with such shine, Oh Tetrabiblos, I am the ruler of the stars. Aspect become complete. Open thy malevolent gate. Oh 88 starts of the heaven. Shine. Urano Metria!"

The very stars themselves seemed to fly down and attack the demons, and they were all left on the ground, empty husks.

She fell down onto her knees, suddenly exhausted and shocked by the sight before her.

Did she do that?

"Lucy!" Natsu cried out delighted. She suddenly found herself scooped up into a bone-crunching hug, and surrounded by smiling faces, as Gray held up Erza, and Happy and Charle flew carrying Wendy. "You remember, right?" Natsu grinned as he pulled back. His pink hair flopped over his eyes just so and there was something endearingly charming about him that made her catch her breath. "You must have remembered to have been able to cast that spell!" he said happily.

"No," Lucy frowned, a headache formed in the centre of her forehead, "I don't know how I did that…I just knew…."

Natsu dropped his hands from her and stepped back. Lucy's face fell at the sight of his expression and she ducked her head down to look at the floor. "Sorry," she mumbled. Erza clasped her shoulder and squeezed it comfortingly but it wasn't enough to ease the sudden pain.

She didn't like the fact that Natsu looked so disappointed but she didn't know why….

FTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFT

Lucy woke up from another nightmare.

She had been having them fairly regularly since she woke up in Fairy Tail. They were terrible things. Screaming, crying, painful, hurtful things happened in them, but this one, this brand new nightmare, was the worst yet.

She had been in some serious scary situations in her nightmares. Kidnapped, beaten, plummeting to her death, on the verge of being murdered, but nothing was as terrifying as holding her own dying body and watching herself die before her eyes….

She shuddered and wrapped her arms round herself.

She half wished that she hadn't kicked Natsu out now. For the last two weeks he had been trying to convince her that he always stayed in her apartment and that they always shared a bed together. She wasn't an idiot. It was just like with Loke trying to pretend they were in a relationship. She may have been someone different with these life experiences she had now forgotten about but she wasn't some easy woman or something. She would never let a boy sleep in her bed until he put a ring on her finger. She had been raised properly.

So instead she kicked Natsu out of the window and half regretted it….strangely thought, it felt like an old habit as she hadn't given any thought or worry to it at all.

But now after this particular nightmare, she kinda wished she had her friend here. He would know what to do. Okay, he was an idiot, and obviously spoke without thinking, but he would find a way to make her smile and forget this nightmare.

She somehow knew he would make everything better but she couldn't say why.

She knew right away she needed a distraction. Her writing wasn't enough, she had tried but nothing had come out as she stared at a blank page, so she had then taken to exploring her bedroom. She didn't remember the cute little bedroom but she knew it had to be hers as her jewellery box sat on the desk, some of her clothes that she remembers were in the wardrobe, and some of her favourite books filled the book case.

She enjoyed fingering the spines of her new books, she eyed the photos lining her shelves and bedside table, and on her wall in awe, they consisted mainly of Natsu, herself, and Happy, but other guild members starred in them. She rifled through her drawers and found it weird that she had odd bits of stone, random beads, and in one of her notebooks a flower that had been crushed in between the pages fell out. She had keepsakes that she couldn't remember keeping.

Then she found it.

A whole big drawer in one of her cupboards filled to the brim with unsealed letters. She picked one up, opened it, and read; Dear Mama, today I have met the most wonderful person in the world. His name is Natsu and he is now the most wonderful person because he had taken me to Fairy Tail! Yes! That's right I am a Fairy Tail mage now and….

Lucy sank to the floor and began to read all the letters she had written to her mother. They detailed how she met Natsu, they spoke cheerfully about her first few missions, they talked about her new friends, about her kidnapping by Juvia, about how Juvia joined; She may have kidnapped me, Mama, but she really wants to make amends, and she is so nice….when she's not obsessing over my non-existent relationship with Gray. Lucy found herself entirely engrossed in her lost memories that were written on paper.

And then she found a new letter, one that started with Dear Father, and finished with smudged ink and tear stains. Lucy smudged the ink even more with fresh tears as she read her own words fuming that he had died before she could make her own amends with him. Detailing her friendship with Cana, and how she helped her open up to her father Gildarts, and how that made her realise his poor attempt to reach out to her….

Lucy shook and dropped the letter. It wasn't fair. Her father had apparently attempted to reconnect with her and she couldn't remember it. It broke her heart just to think on it.

She moved onto the next letter.

Dear Mama and Father, it started, something very weird happened. I can barely believe it myself. Today….I died…

Lucy trembled as she read the nightmare she had just had on paper. They weren't nightmares, she realised in horror, they were her memories. She felt her eyes prick with tears at the thought there was nothing but misery in those memories….but….but then her eye snagged on a hastily written sentence near the end of the letter; I hugged him from behind like I usually do but it felt different this time, as my face pressed against his back I felt….connected with him. She dropped the letter and hastily read over her previous letters. Certain sentences stuck into her mind, and she glanced over the more recent ones that must have been written before her accident.

Her face turned a bright red. If Erza was here she would probably find her face was redder than her hair, she was so embarrassed.

Looking over these letters, really looking at them, it was obvious to her – an outsider now due to her memory loss – that the writer of this letter was in love with Natsu.

Oh my God! She groaned as she buried her face into her arms. No wonder he was so upset with me not remembering!

And then once again, her mood changed (if Happy was here he would ask if she was having her period, her mood swapped so rapidly), as a small smile took over.

Her life in Fairy Tail couldn't be that bad if she had fallen in love and made these lovely friends.

And so she went back to bed and dreamed again. Only this time, she dreamt about playing in a swimming pool with all of her friends, and of Natsu's arms round her waist as he lifted her up.

FTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFT

They went one another missions and unlike the last one it was very straight forward. The Jiggle Butt gang were up to their old tricks once again and it was up to them to put a stop to it.

It wasn't pleasant and in the end all three of them (Lucy, Natsu, and Happy) had to have a very thorough bath. Happy shampooed his fur five times and still smelt vaguely of fart. "It's not fair!" he wailed as tears poured down his cheeks. "Charle will never love me if I smell like those Jingly Bums or whatever they're called." He sniffled helplessly as he flew into a corner and released a very depressing blue aura around him. "She really, really, hates the way they smell and those weirdo rubber suits they were. Now I will remind her of those horrible people and she will fall into the arms of Lily."

"Poor Charle," Lucy giggled, she couldn't help it, people thought Fairy Tail on a whole were melodramatic but none of them had a patch on Happy. "She had nightmares about them and their terrible rubber body suits for weeks."

Happy blinked and turned to face her. "You remember that?" he asked slowly.

"Of course!" Lucy grinned. "I remember everything…." It's then when she realised what she had been saying. She remembered everything. She remembered everything! "Natsu!" she cried out as she snatched Natsu's hands. He had just walked back in from his own shower and had been drying his hair with a towel. The smelly, damp, material fell to the floor with a loud thump and he stared at her bewildered but slightly worried. "We met in Hargeon," Lucy said breathlessly, "and you saved me from that love charm, and we had lunch, you ate like a pig-"

"I don't eat like a pig!" Natsu protested indignantly.

"Yes, you do! Now shut up!" Lucy snapped impatiently. "That phoney salamander tricked me, and you saved me again, well tried to, you got seasick as always, and then destroyed the entire port while beating that jerk up! You ran away from the soldiers while dragging me with you!" Lucy looked up and smiled radiantly. She felt like she was bursting with happiness. Seeing Natsu's dumbstruck face made her want to laugh which made her smile blossom into a grin. "Natsu, I remember now!"

Natsu blinked and then blinked again, and then realisation finally sank in and he whooped delightedly and swept her up off her feet as he spun her round in the air. "Natsu!" Lucy gasped.

"You're back!" he said as he slid her back down to the ground and then pulled her in close. He hugged her tightly. So tightly that she felt like she was melting into his very being. Her eyes fluttered to a close and she smiled into his shoulder and hugged back just as tightly. "You're back," he repeated.

"Tee-hee!" Happy snickered as he flew over their heads. "He liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes you."

FTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFTFT

As usual Natsu had no patience as he kicked the guild doors open and bellowed on the top of his voice;

"HEY EVERYONE! LUCY CAN REMEMBER NOW!"

Lucy barely had time to step into the building when everyone surrounded the girl. Lucy was being pulled into a hug by virtually everyone (Laxus and Gajeel didn't but that didn't stop them from breathing down her neck like fucking creeps) as each and every one of them asked if she remembered them.

"Do you remember me, Lu-Chan?" Levy asked.

"Of course, Levy-Chan!" Lucy cried out as she hugged one of her best friends in the whole world. "I promise I'll finish that chapter for you soon!"

"Oh Lu-Chan!"

"Oh Levy-Chan!"

"Love Rival!" Lucy blinked as Levy had suddenly been pushed out of her arms and instantly replaced by Juvia. "Juvia has missed her Love Rival," Juvia murmured shyly. "Do not get hurt again. Gray-sama spent far too much time worrying over you," she finished off with a glare.

"Erm," Lucy sweat-dropped, "I won't. Promise."

At that Juvia's face softened and she reached to hug Lucy when she was suddenly shoved out of the way by Cana who hugged Lucy tightly and insisted they should have a drink together but then she got pushed out of the way by Mirajane who was a little tearful, and then suddenly Erza kicked her out of the way and slammed Lucy's head against her armour in a choking hug.

"Oi Erza!" Natsu snapped. "Don't give her fucking amnesia again!"

"Oh!" Erza immediately let Lucy go (and Lucy was finally able to breathe again). "I sincerely apologise Lucy. You may punch me as retribution."

"Erm…" Lucy sweat-dropped even more. "No thank you. You're all right."

Once again she was swamped with people demanding to know she remembered them after she reassured virtually every single person that she did remember them, she began to make her way to the bar only to be bombarded by another member.

"Can you remember me?" Vijeeter asked eagerly.

Lucy opened her mouth to confirm that she could when words failed her. She eyed the strangely dressed boy and tried to put a name to him. She knew she should know but for some reason her mind wouldn't work! "I'm sorry," she bowed her head, "but for some reason I cannot."

"What?!" Vijeeter wailed. "That's so unfair you remembered everyone else. Even Max where the only thing interesting about him is his love affair with a fucking broomstick!"

"Don't bad mouth Brenda!"

And as on cue, another brawl broke out within the guild.

"Ah," Mirajane said as she returned to cleaning glasses, "It's good to have everyone home again."

Lucy agreed. There was nothing better than being home, no matter how loud, violent, and destructive it was.

(Natsu dragged her down to the ground in order to avoid a chair that had been flung at her head. He didn't want her to get amnesia again, not after spending so much time trying to get her to remember him!)
