Give Into Me Part 2

Jacob ran as fast as he could on two legs, trying to put as much distance as he could between himself and Bella before he completely lost control. It was taking every ounce of will power he had to stay human and he was quickly losing that fight. He grit his teeth as a bone snapped in his arm, a grunt of pain escaping him as he stumbled to the ground. His wolf was practically foaming at the mouth, demanding they return to Bella. Jacob fought back angrily, groaning as his ribs cracked and rehealed, trying to keep himself anchored by digging his fingers into the earth. "Mate! Ours! Need!"

The words reverberated in his skull, making him wince and snap back. "No! She isn't ready. We aren't ready. You heard her; we haven't even talked about a relationship."

The wolf snarled angrily, pacing restlessly. He had no use for talk, he ran on instinct alone, and he wanted to claim Bella as theirs before she was pulled away from them again. Jacob groaned again as the wolf imagined what it would be like to have Bella writhing beneath them, calling out their name as she reached her peak-.

"Enough!" He slammed his fists into the ground and squeezed his eyes shut, dragging deep gasps of air in, trying to clear his head. His want, his need for Bella was growing at an alarming rate and he was having more and more difficulty controlling himself and the wolf when he was close to her. He'd always found her attractive, on the inside as well as the outside, he was a red-blooded male after all, he wasn't blind. He was sure Bella had no idea the effect she had on him or many other men. Since she had come back that fact had only increased, her new found confidence and independence that the leech had always tried to smother made her ten times sexier in his mind and had made the past few days almost torturous. He sucked in another breath through clenched teeth as the wolf conjured the memory of the two of them in the shower, fighting against his growing arousal as he remembered her fingers sliding over his skin. He dropped his head in his hands with a groan; this would not end well… This constant need to be around her, to have her close coupled with his raging hormones and the wolf's urge to mate…he could only see it ending in disaster. He couldn't lose her again, not after he finally got her back, he wouldn't survive it. He needed help. Taking a deep breath he rose to his feet and turned back through the woods, heading for the only person who could help him now.

Bella sighed as she watched Old Quil shuffle around the room, muttering under his breath as he sorted through the many papers on the tables around the room. Aside from a mumbled greeting he hadn't said two words to her since she arrived and the wait was grating on her frazzled nerves. The elder finally seemed to find what he was looking for and shuffled over to her with several sheets of old paper, the edges cracked and curling showing their age. His rheumy eyes were practically glowing with excitement as they peered at her, and she felt a small twinge of hope that he had found something to help Jacob. She waited impatiently as he arranged the papers on the small table between them and slowly lowered himself into the armchair, sighing as he shifted into a comfortable position. "Patience young one. My wife loved her chair and her spirit would be very unhappy if you damaged it."

At his dry tone she realized she was gripping the arms of the chair tightly enough to turn her knuckled white. Her cheeks flamed red as she released her hands and clasped them in her lap tightly, biting her lip as she waited. Old Quil studied her carefully, pulling out his pipe and stuffing it with tobacco from his pouch, his eyes giving nothing away. Bella was nearly at her wit's end as he began puffing on it thoughtfully when he suddenly leaned forward and peered closely at her. "I take it you and our young Alpha are not yet intimate?"

She blinked at him in shock, mouth dropping open, sure she had misheard him. When he continued gazing steadily at her she flushed red and sputtered, "What does that have to do with anything?! It's Jacob's wolf that's the problem!"

"Exactly." He drew a long draft from the pipe, ignoring the glare she shot at him, and exhaled heavily, watching the smoke dance before him for a long moment. "I assume you have heard our legends before?"

At Bella's impatient nod he shuffled through the papers at his side and pulled one out. "Those of course are not all our legends, merely ones to prepare the next generation should the gene be triggered. There are parts of our history not even Billy Black knows; stories and prophesies that only keepers of the archives are privy to. So it is no surprise that no one else understood the connection between you and young Jacob."

Bella wrinkled her forehead, watching as he took a few more puffs before continuing. "Imprinting is a gift from the spirits, although this generation may think differently, they are so determined to do things their own way. Not that their feelings aren't real, as in the case of Samuel Ulley and Leah Clearwater, but that doesn't mean that person is best for them in the long run."

Bella raised an eyebrow at his cryptic comments, he almost sounded like he knew more about the love triangle the imprinting had caused but decided to try and stay on topic for now. "Jacob didn't imprint on me, he's told me that."

The elder nodded as he smoothed the paper in front of him, meeting Bella's gaze thoughtfully. "I know, your bond goes even deeper than that. You and young Jacob are more deeply entwined than any imprint. That is why his wolf is so out of control. And the more Jacob fights him, the stronger the wolf becomes, until he takes over completely."

Bella ran a hand through her hair, trying to absorb the information. "How does that help me? And what does Jacob and I being…intimate…have to do with it?"

"Have you ever researched normal wolves young one? If you watch, our young Pack behaves much like them. Wolves follow their instincts, to hunt, kill, protect one another, and Alphas even more so. When they find their Alpha female, the Alpha is quick to…mate with her, to solidify their bond and prevent others from claiming her. Jacob's wolf is trying to follow his instinct, to claim their mate, and young Jacob is fighting him on it, for his own reasons."

Bella flushed a deep red as the elder spoke, mortified that she was getting a sex talk from someone old enough to be her great-grandfather. "So…what are you saying? The only way to fix Jacob is to…to have sex?"

Old Quil chuckled at her flustered and abrupt statement and shook his head. "No, not quite that simple. Yes, being intimate solidifies the bond, but Jacob is Alpha so there is more to it. His wolf needs to claim you as well, in its own way. In order to sate the wolf and allow it and the man to coexist, Jacob needs to mark you as theirs."

Bella's eyes widened and she rubbed the car on her wrist. "You mean…he has to bite me.

Old Quil nodded and Bella covered her face with her hands as she took a deep breath, raising her head as she questioned him. "Do…I mean are Emily and Kim…?"

"No, Samuel refused to even consider it after Emily's accident and Kim is far too timid to try. Both Jared and Samuel's wolves are content for now but there are not true Alphas, it is not a need like it is for Jacob. His case is more extreme, I believe because of your relationship with the Cullen boy and your absence over the summer. Both man and wolf are desperate not to lose you again and in the wolf's mind, the only way to prevent that is to claim you as theirs, forever."

Sucking in a deep breath, Bella stood and paced to the window, her mind spinning as she tried to sort through her chaotic emotions. "Jacob and I haven't even talked about our relationship, now I'm supposed to just jump into bed with him at the next opportunity?"

The elder snorted and waved her back, watching as she slumped into the chair. "You told me you love Jacob Black, yes?"

Bella looked up and nodded, trying to use that fact to anchor herself as he raised an eyebrow at her. "You and Jacob have always had a relationship more intimate than friendship, even if you tried to deny it. The choice to take the next step rests on you, to do out of love, not duty. If you truly love the Alpha and are prepared to commit to him and him alone, then it should be an easy decision."

Bella nodded absentmindedly, raising her eyes to the window she saw a flash of black hair that she assumed was Quil heading out. Turning back to the old man she straightened and nodded firmly. "Tell me more."

Bella slammed the door behind her, muttering under her breath as she kicked her shoes off her aching feet. Stalking into the kitchen she yanked open the fridge and glared accusingly at the contents, as if one of them was the culprit for her bad mood. "Bells? That you?"

She sighed, trying to arrange her face into a more pleasant expression as she answered. "Yeah, just trying to figure out breakfast."

The sound of approaching footsteps made her turn and she forced a smile that felt more like a grimace. "Hey Dad."

Charlie gave her a sympathetic look as he crossed the kitchen to the sink. "Rough night at work Bells?"

She nodded, rubbing at her temples to try and help her pounding her head. "Don't worry about breakfast then, I can grab something at the diner on my way in. One bad meal won't kill me, you just relax today."

He waited until she nodded, too tired to argue, and watched as he scratched the back of his neck. "Any word from Jacob?"

She shook her head, turning away before he could see the tears in her eyes and mumbled a good night as she headed upstairs. She stripped off her diner uniform to jump in the shower, knowing she'd regret sleeping in her bed if she didn't, she'd never get the stink of the diner out of her sheets. She was hoping she'd be tired enough after a double shift for a good sleep, but she doubted it. She hadn't had a decent night's sleep in a month, and moving home two weeks ago had only seemed to make it worse. She rubbed her chest at the flare of pain the thought caused her, trying to think of anything but Jacob. A few tears slipped beneath her closed eyelids and she felt the pang of loss ache again.

It had been a month since her talk with Old Quil and his explanation of the bond between her and Jacob. Although confused at first, she had thought long and hard about their relationship and came to the conclusion that the elder was right. She had never been just friends with Jacob, friends didn't cuddle and touch as much as they did, they acted more like a couple in public than she and Edward ever had. Even though she had just gotten back, she felt that, with their history, she was ready to move forward and at least broach the rather embarrassing subject. She doubted it would take much to convince Jacob, she saw the way he looked at her after their heated kissing since his return.

But late that night, when Jacob finally returned, he had told her he would make up his sister's room for her, using the excuses that Charlie could drop by at any time and that he would be running overnight patrols and didn't want to disturb her sleep. When she tried to protest he simply cut her off and headed out to patrol, leaving her feeling hurt and confused. And so the next two weeks passed like that. Jacob simply refused to come near her, especially if they were alone in the same room, on the rare occasion he was home. She spent her days lonely, even with the company of the Pack, and her nights restless as she tried in vain to sleep without Jacob's presence. He ate the meals she left for him between patrols and sleep, thanking her politely when he saw her but otherwise kept his distance.

When she called Seth, desperate and hoping to get some idea of what Jacob was thinking through the Pack mind, he miserably told her Jake's mind was a steel trap. He'd always practiced blocking his thoughts since phasing, and the Alpha power he carried seemed to cement it. The only heard what he wanted them to. The Pack didn't understand his behavior either, but had given up asking when he threatened to Alpha order them all into silence. She bit her lip as she remembered Seth's words. "He's more wolf than man every day Bella. We're all worried. We're losing him."

That had been the last straw and Bella had packed her bag, left a note and a freezer full of meals for Billy and went home to Charlie's. She hoped to force Jacob's hand and sure enough he had shown up within the hour, angrily demanding she return. She remembered his eyes, then half gold half brown, flashing angrily at her as she stood her ground. "I'm staying right here until you pull your head out of your ass and talk to me. You can't ignore me, shut me out. I can't live like this Jacob! When you're ready to talk, you know where to find me."

The hurt on his face nearly killed her as she went back inside and slammed the door, sinking to the floor as tears ran down her face. It had been over two weeks and she hadn't seen or heard from him since. She knew he was out there, Seth told her he regularly patrolled past her house at night, but he continued to shut everyone out. She turned off the water and stepped out, drying off with her towel as he head spun with worry and frustration. She knew they were running out of time and sh was at a loss what to do. As she tugged her yoga pants on she heard a knock at the back door, signaling the arrival of one of the Pack.

"Coming!" She threw her damp hair into a pony tail and tugged her shirt over her head as she made her way downstairs to the kitchen, surprised she managed to do it without tripping, and yanked the door open.

"Took you long enough, pale face."

She scowled at the shifter leaning against the porch railing, placing her hands on her hips. "When are you going to stop calling me that, asshole?"

Paul smirked and tugged the end of her ponytail as he brushed past her into the house. Fighting the grin tugging her lips she shut the door and turned to see Paul digging through the fridge. "Manners jackass."

He snorted and pulled one of Charlie's beers out of the fridge, ignoring her raised eyebrow and look of disapproval. "Don't start now Princess, I've had a long night keeping an eye on you in that diner. What in the world compelled you to start taking overnight shifts?"

She looked away and shrugged, seeing the look of concern on Paul's face as he put the beer on the table and approached her. "Still not sleeping?"

She shook her head, fiddling with the end of her sleeve, chewing lightly on her bottom lip as she tried to ignore Paul's disapproving stare. "They had someone call in and needed the shift covered. Not like I get much rest anyway."

Paul shook his head and draped an arm around her shoulders, guiding her to the living room as he grabbed his drink, giving her a nudge towards the couch. "C'mon, you need rest and I'm on babysitting duty till noon. Time to relax."

She lay down willingly, watching Paul thoughtfully as he flipped through the channels with one hand, the other rubbing her feet. If anyone had told her a month ago that Paul Lahote would become her new best friend, she would have accused them of pilfering Old Quil's moonshine. But shortly after she'd returned home, Paul had appeared on her doorstep, haggard and gaunt. She had reluctantly invited him in, sensing there was something behind the anger and arrogance that he wore like a second skin. Surprisingly it hadn't taken much to get him to open up to her, he really just needed someone willing to listen, and she found that underneath the tough facade she'd found a hurting and weary soul.

He told her about his abusive father, how his mother turned to drinking and drugs to cope and Paul turned to violence and women. He had a string of one night stands longer than she was tall; searching to find that acceptance he never got from his parents. The Pack was the first real family he'd had and he had admitted that he'd seen Bella as a threat to that, which is why he had always been so rude to her. She had gently, but firmly, assured him that she was there to stay and she was just as much Pack as he was.

Finally, Paul seemed to believe her and over the next two week his attentions slowly thawed towards her. She'd taken to teaching him simple meals, with his mom strung out he was stuck with junk food or begging off of Emily, and he had surprisingly turned out to be a halfway decent cook. Not that anyone was allowed to know that. He was worried it would "damage my street cred" or some such nonsense. In any case, the two of them had bonded quickly, now able to bicker back and forth without causing tension, more like siblings now than enemies. She could feel her eyelids starting to droop as Paul settled in to watch some sports talk show, and she let herself drift off into her normal restless sleep.

When Bella woke, it was afternoon and Paul was gone. She snagged the note he'd left her on the table, reading his explanation that they'd switched off guard duty and Jared would be outside if she needed anything. Although he didn't say it, she was sure he'd be back later, most nights he volunteered to sit outside the house and keep watch. Wandering into the kitchen she decided to make grilled fish for dinner, the freezer was fully stocked from Charlie and Billy's last fishing trip and Paul would appreciate a nice dinner. As she placed the package in the sink to thaw she glanced out the window and felt her heart stutter. "Jacob…"

After two weeks of not seeing him she drank in the sight, gripping the edge of the sink to keep from running out the door to him. He stood just inside the tree line, dressed in his usual cutoffs, his arms held rigidly at his sides as he stared at the house. Even from the distance she could see the glow of his eyes and she swallowed hard as Seth's words rang in her ears. She wondered if it was already too late, if the wolf now ruled Jacob, and she cautiously went to the back door and opened it. "Jake?"

His molten gaze snapped to hers as she stepped on the porch and she saw his fists clench as he took a step towards her before halting abruptly. "Jake, wait! Please."

She slowly made her way towards him, hands in front of her in a calming gesture, until she was only a few feet away. "Jacob…"

Her heart nearly broke at seeing how exhausted he looked, he was worse than when she had first come home. She guessed he wasn't getting any sleep either; every muscle in his body looked locked and tense. His molten gaze was full of pain as he stared at her, his fingers twitching as he held himself back and his breath came in sharp, quick pants. Biting her lip she walked closer, shaking her head when he took another step towards the forest. "Jacob, please. You have to let me in, you have to let me help you. This isn't something you can fix with sheer stubbornness, there are things you don't know, and neither of us can keep going like this."

By now she stood directly in front of him, tipping her head back to hold his gaze, and she carefully slipped her arms around his waist and leaned forward to rest her cheek over his heart. She felt him stiffen even more if that was possible, and his heart rate increased under her ear, his body trembling as his limbs jerked sharply. "Let me in Jake. Please."

Her whispered plea seemed to break the last threads of his control as the breath he had been holding came out in a rush of air, his arms snapping up to press her to his chest. She closed her eyes as she sighed, clinging to him as she pressed a kiss over his pounding heart. Jacob jerked and shuddered, she felt his arms tighten around her as a growl rumbled through his chest and she suddenly found herself forced away, nearly falling to the ground as he stumbled back from her. "Jacob?"

His chest heaved as he looked at her, the pain in his gaze even more intense as he swallowed and whispered "I'm sorry."

Before she could say anything he turned and ran into the woods, leaving her staring after him with tears in her eyes.

Bella flipped off the kitchen light, bidding Charlie a good night as she passed the living room and climbed the stairs to her bedroom, feeling emotionally drained. She had spent most of the night in silence as she tried to make sense of Jacob's even more bizarre behavior, using the excuse of being tired when Charlie questioned her. He had reluctantly accepted her answer, leaving her to her thoughts through dinner and clean up, and she had thus far avoided Paul's questions by leaving his plate on the porch instead of taking it to the woods like she usually did.

She was sure he smelled Jacob and her scents in the woods and was in no mood to talk about what had transpired between them that afternoon. As she opened the door she made a note to call Old Quil in the morning, they needed to come up with something to help Jacob now, before it was too late. A shadow in the corner caught her eye, causing her heart to jump in her chest and she opened her mouth to scream, when the shadow darted over to her and a warm hand pressed over her mouth. "Bells, it's me."

She sagged against the door, peering up at the golden eyes as Jacob pulled his hand away. "Jake, what the hell?! What are you doing?"

He sucked in a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment as he braced his hands on either side of her. "I'm sorry. I just needed to see you, to try and explain…"

He trailed off and blew a frustrated breath out through his nose, tipping his head back as he grit his teeth. "I can't…Bells…"

The desperation in his tone chased away any anger she had and she tentatively placed her hand over his heart, her breath catching in her throat as her gaze met his. "Jacob, there's so much you don't know…but I can't help you if you don't let me explain-"

Jacob cut her off with a searing kiss, his hands coming up to cup her face as he pressed his body against hers, making her moan in response as her hands moved to tangle in his hair. All rational thought left her brain as her back arched and his lips caressed hers, slamming a door on the little voice in her head that tried to tell her it was a bad idea. After a month without his touch it overwhelmed her, especially when his tongue traced her lips before plundering her mouth as he grasped her legs and hoisted her up to wrap around his waist, pressing her against the door. She turned her head away to gasp for air and Jacob switched his attention to her neck, licking and sucking his way down to her heaving chest. "Jacob…"

She couldn't help the groan as his hardness brushed against her throbbing core, and Jacob froze, his gaze snapping up to hers. Her eyes widened as she saw his golden eyes, glowing eerily in the dimness, and she saw the points of his canines flashing in the darkness and for the first time a tiny sliver of fear shivered down her spine. She was no longer dealing with Jacob but his wolf, and Old Quil's words echoed in her head as she sucked in several deep breaths. Before she could say anything, Jacob turned and carried her over to the bed, placing her down on the mattress as he hovered over her, a faint growl rumbling through him as he inhaled deeply. "Mine."

The deep voice was no more Jacob's than the eyes and she swallowed as she realized there was no backing out now, this could be the last chance to save Jacob and she wouldn't lose him again. Before either of them could move she heard the door fly open and then a familiar voice growl, "Jacob! Stop!"

Jacob's head snapped around as he snarled at the intruder and Bella held up a hand warningly. "Paul, it's his wolf, not him. It's okay, there's more going on than you know."

Paul shook his head, glaring at Jacob as he edged himself into the room. "I know more than you think. Old Quil told me the gist of it when I want to talk to him last week. I know you're trying to help him Bella but if this is how it happens, it will destroy him. You have to convince him to stop."

Bella nodded slowly, knowing he was right, and placed a hand on Jacob's cheek to guide his gaze back to hers. "Please. I need Jacob. I know what you need, but let me explain it to him first. He needs to understand."

A low growl rumbled through his chest, but she saw the glow start to dim, watching as his eyes closed and his body relaxed slightly. "Jake?"

At her whispered plea his eyes snapped open and she was relieved to see they were back to the semi-normal half brown half gold. He shook his head as if dazed and looked at her as confusion filled his face. "Bella? What…"

He looked around, spying the still pissed Paul leaning against the wall and his gaze snapped back to Bella as he pushed himself off the bed, a horrified look on his face. "Bella…I didn't…I wasn't…"

He swallowed and suddenly bolted for the window, diving through before Paul could stop him.

"Jacob!" She leapt off the bed, sprinting for the window, and growled when Paul snagged an arm around her waist and pulled her back. "Let me go! I have to stop him!"

"Bella, wait! You can't just jump out the window after him. And Jacob needs time to calm down, unless you want the wolf to finish what it started. Just give him a little bit." At Paul's soothing tone she stopped fighting, knowing he was right, and Jacob had already disappeared into the dark forest. Tears blurred her vision and a choked sob escaped her as she turned and buried her face in Paul's chest.

"I'm losing him Paul. What am I going to do?" He shushed her, wrapping his arms around her as he pressed a light kiss into her hair.

"It'll be okay Bella, we'll think of something." She sighed, trying to pull herself together, when Paul's head snapped to the door and a low growl rumbled through his chest. "There's someone at the door."

"Jacob? Or one of the Pack?"

"No. Not a vamp either. I don't recognize the scent. It's not human." She could feel the tremors in his arms but before she could say anything to sooth him Charlie's voice rang up the stairs.

"Bella? There's someone here to see you."

"Paul, wait here. And if you really need to wolf out, please jump out my window first." He snorted, reluctantly releasing her, and she gave him a small smile of reassurance as she exited her bedroom. Heading downstairs she followed the sound of murmuring voices to the kitchen, pasting on a smile as she walked through the doorway. "Hey dad, who is it?"

Charlie turned to smile at her and she caught a glimpse of platinum blond hair with turquoise tips over his shoulder. "Jen?!"

Her friend stood from the kitchen table, smiling as she rushed over to hug her. "Sorry about dropping by so late, I wanted to surprise you!"

Bella returned her hug cautiously, Paul's words ringing in her ears. She had been so busy dealing with Jacob and the rest of the Pack since her return; she hadn't thought to get in touch with her friend. She had missed Jen, but if Paul's senses were right, her friend wasn't human and had been lying to her. Jen seemed to notice her tension and leaned forward to murmur, "I need to talk to you. Alone."

Turning back to Charlie she made the excuse of wanting to catch up and suggesting they sit on the back porch so they didn't disturb his game. Bella's head spun as Jen led her out the door, hoping Paul had heard from upstairs and hadn't wolfed out already. As the door closed behind them she quickly backed away from Jen, ignoring the puzzled look on her face as she edged towards the side of her house under her bedroom window. "Stay there. I don't know why you're hear or what you are, but I am not going anywhere near you."

Jen raised her hands in a placating gesture, sighing as she gave Bella some space. "I know, I know. There's stuff I should have told you from the beginning, but I wasn't sure if you could handle it with how upset you were about Jacob. But Bella, there's so much more going on than you know, if you let me explain."

"Explain what?! You lied to me; I trusted you and you lied to me! You aren't human, you aren't vampire and you for sure aren't a shifter. So what are you?!"

"Okay, okay. I'll tell you the truth, but I need you to come into the woods with me."

Bella scoffed, crossing her arms as she glared at her, every muscle tense as she prepared to fling herself over the banister if needed. "I'm not going anywhere."

Jen sighed in frustration, taking a step towards Bella, then froze when a growl came from the shadows.

"Back. Off. Or I'll rip your throat out." Bella let out a breath as Paul rounded the corner of the porch, trembling as he glared at Jen. "Whatever you are, you need to leave."

Jen frowned back, raising her hands in a peaceful gesture as she shook her head. "I can't do that. I'm trying to protect Bella, same as you. But there are things she doesn't know and the longer it's kept from her, the more danger she's in."

Bella raised her eyebrows, wondering what Jen could possibly know about her, but Paul snarled as he took another step towards her. "Not happening. Now get lost."

When Jen shook her head again Paul snapped, instantly replaced by his silver wolf, and Bella tried to calm him down. "Paul, wait!"

He ignored her and launched himself at Jen, leaving Bella to watch with a scream trapped in her throat, as he sailed towards her.

Jen flung her hand up, a golden ball of light forming over her palm as she mouthed something and the ball collided with Paul in mid-air. He let out a startled yelp before crumpling to the ground and phasing back to a man, lying motionless between them.

"Paul!" Bella dropped to her knees beside him, running her hands over his back and let out a sob of relief when she found he was still breathing. Glaring up at the woman beside her she hissed, "What did you do to him?! What are you?"

Jen sighed, shaking her head slightly as she knelt beside her, gazing at her intently. "This isn't how I wanted to tell you but I guess there's no way around it. I'm a witch Bella."

Bella's mouth gaped open as she stared blankly at Jen, and swallowed before whispering, "What do you want with me?"

"That's what I've been trying to tell you. You're a witch too Bella."
