Mike Mizanin knew Adam's security code. He punched it in and opened the door. "Get the house surrounded, but don't make any noise. Doc Ambrose has Randy. Adam can not see you." He spoke to Ted DiBiase, Cody Rhodes, Heath Slater and Zack Ryder.
"You got it, Miz. Don't worry, the McShits won't get him." Ted spoke with a growl.
Mike nodded. "I've got to back to Randy." He closed the door, reset the security and went upstairs.
Randy looked at Mike. "Who was it?"
Mike gave a casual laugh. "Ted and Cody. They were worried about you. I sent them home. For a minute, I thought that fucker from the bar had followed us. Everything is fine."
"Good. Stupid Ted, good thing he didn't wake the kids with all that banging on the door. Okay, Doc. Sew me up." Randy laid down. He could relax now. He knew the house was surrounded, and they were safe. Randy just had to keep up the story about the bar fight going for Adam's sake.
"Randy, it is going to sting. Mike, hold his hand. Ready, Doctor." Adam held a loaded syringe in his latex gloved hand.
"Come on, Mizzie, I need you." Randy held out his right hand, and Mike took it in his.
Both Dean and Adam wore surgical masks. Dean spoke. "Here, here, here and here, please, nurse." He was professional as he pointed out the places for Adam to inject the numbing medication into Randy's temple.
"Sorry, Ran. Hold tight." Adam began to inject the medication. Randy flinched, then relaxed each time. When Adam finished, he capped the needle and broke it off the syringe.
"Not bad, nurse. Talk to me, tell me about the kids." Randy asked as Dean deep cleaned the wound before he stitched it. The medicine also needed more time to fully numb the area.
Adam prepared the suture needle and nylon thread. "They are fine. The Wizard of Oz was on tonight..." He went on to tell Randy about the children.
Adam was impressed with Dean's surgical skills. The stitches were small, neat and even. Very difficult to do in the current environment.
"Jade loves that story. So, why in here and not the other room?" Randy's eyes were closed as Dean continued to stitch.
Adam decided he might as well tell Randy. "Because Dean's using the room. He is living here." He wasn't sure how Randy would react.
"Bet the kids like that. Adam, it's your life. I want you happy. To be honest, I'm glad. Good to know there is not only a doctor here, but a good man as well. Take care of them Doc, they are special treasures, all five of them." Randy opened his eyes and looked at Adam.
Adam knew Randy spoke the truth. "Thanks, Randy. I am happy and so are the kids. Dean cares about us very much. Okay, he is almost done."
"It was a clean wound, and not as deep as I feared. No glass shards either. Just one more knot… cut, please." Dean held steady so Adam could cut the thread at the knot.
"Bandage it, please…" Dean nodded to Adam. He spoke as he removed his gloves. "I will watch over them. I swear it, Randy. Thanks for supporting Adam's decision to invite me here."
Adam placed a bandage over the freshly stitched wound. Dean examined the rest of the damage on Randy's face. He carefully made sure no bones were broken, especially on the side with the black eye. Dean did a minor check for a concussion. He finished with a nod.
"No broken bones. I don't see any signs of concussion, but stay awake for four hours. Randy, if you get dizzy, get a severe headache or blurred vision, please go to the hospital. Concussions can be dangerous and I can't treat that in a home." Dean spoke in a very serious tone of voice.
Mike spoke up. "If that happens, we'll get him to the hospital. Adam, what do I need to do?" He knew the bandage would have to be changed.
"Keep it dry. Get gauze pads and surgical tape. If it changes or oozes, it needs to be treated. Randy, when was your last tetanus booster?" Adam looked at Mike, then Randy.
"When I went to China last year. When can I leave?" Randy was anxious for two things. He wanted to be away from the children before McMahon's men found him, and two, he wanted to be in his own bed, curled up with Mike.
Dean spoke. "Then you don't need a booster. Anytime, if you promise to follow my care advice. You are lucky, it looked worse than it was. Put a cold pack on your eye when you can stand it. It will help. I can remove the stitches for you in about ten days." Dean put his bag back in order. Adam picked up the trash to throw away.
"Thanks Dean. What do I owe you? I don't expect free treatment." Randy slowly sat up with Mike's help.
Dean looked at Randy. "Make a donation to sick children. Look, I know this isn't the time or place, but kids need medicine. Work things out with the hospital before a real crisis sets in." He gave Randy a pleading look.
"Yes, Megan Helmsley needs an insulin pump, and now, she can't get it." Adam added his thoughts.
Randy sighed. "I can't talk about it, legal stuff. It's a mess, but I am working on it. It wasn't my choice. Meg will get her pump, if I have to sneak it in. Thank you, Adam. I'm sorry, but I'm glad I can come to you. Thank you too, Dean. I will make a donation, trust me. Take care of them, Dean." He shook Dean's hand firmly. His looked begged Dean.
Dean shook just as firmly. "I will, Randy. I care about them, very, very much. Mike, follow the instructions." He gave a nod to Randy's lover.
"Will do. Let's get you home." Mike walked Randy down the stairs. Adam and Dean followed. Randy was much more steady on his feet.
Goodbyes and more handshakes were exchanged. Adam turned off the security, then reset it when Dean closed the door.
Adam turned out the lights as he and Dean went back upstairs. They checked on the children, who slept peacefully. Dean grabbed his bag from the hallway table he'd put it on to show Randy out.
Adam lead Dean to his bedroom. "Dean… stay with me tonight, please?"
"Sure. Let me change and I will be right back." Dean took his bag and went to his room via the adjoining door in the bathroom.
As Dean changed into his sleeping pants, a million thoughts went through his mind. He kept returning to one, Randy Orton wasn't the person he presented himself to be. Dean also know Adam had no idea who the real Randy Orton was. What Dean wasn't sure of was if the Real randy was a good guy, or if he had a dark, dangerous side. Dean also knew he had to protect Adam and the children, no matter what.
Adam changed into his sleeping pants and over sized tee shirt. He pulled back the covers and slipped into the huge bed. A million thoughts ran through his mind. He knew Randy had a problem with Intermittent Explosive Disorder, or IED. He probably got in a fight over something small. The thing that bothered Adam the most, Randy wasn't one to even go to a bar. He wasn't a drinker. Maybe he went with Mike. Why would Mike have said Randy had been hit with a bottle, when Dean clearly said it was the butt of a gun? His thoughts ended when he felt the bed dip.
"Lost in thought?" Dean asked as he pulled Adam into his arms.
Adam snuggled up to Dean. "Yes, about Randy. He does have IED so a fight isn't out of the question. It's just, Randy isn't a drinker, so why was he in a bar? Maybe Mike wanted to go." He gave a shrug and got closer to Dean.
"IED, that explains a fight. Has anything like this happened before?" Dean was curious, maybe his thoughts about Randy had been wrong.
Adam nodded. "Yeah, a couple of times. Not as bad as this though. Guess drinking and fighting don't mix at all. I'm just glad the kids slept through it."
"Yes, it is. It would have upset them to see their father like that. It was also good that he didn't seem to mind me being here. He almost seemed… relieved in a way." Dean tightened his arms as he held Adam close.
Adam inhaled Dean's scent and felt calmer. "I knew he'd be alright with it. We don't interfere in each others personal lives, unless the children are affected. I don't even know much about his company. Maybe that's strange, because we were together so long, but, it's Randy. I was too busy with nursing school and babies do worry about Randy's business venture. I just hope Randy will be alright. Mike will see to it, I hope."
"We did all we could. By the way, you did an excellent job, nurse Adam." Dean kissed the top of Adam's head.
"Thanks, Doctor. I knew you were a good surgeon, but those stitches were excellent. He will be able to hide the scar easily." Adam praised Dean just as much.
Dean smiled. "I had a good instructor. He made us sew ripped oranges till our fingers bled. Oh, by the way, I hate oranges."
Adam chuckled softly. "Good to know. Tired now. Goodnight, babe." Adam settled with a sigh of contentment.
"Goodnight, baby. Sleep well, I'm here." Dean sank down in the bed. Adam's head rested on his chest. Dean felt calm and peaceful.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, in Randy's secret basement, his lieutenants stood around the bed in the bedroom of the house within a house. Mike sat on the bed with Randy.
"Thanks for getting me out of McMahon's clutches. Guess getting rid of Del Rio upset the old man. That's what you get for encroaching on my children. So where is McShit?" Randy looked worse than he felt, still he wasn't great.
"His guys high tailed it when they saw the fire power JoMo pulled out." Ted DiBiase gave a laugh, and a wink to John Morrison.
John Morrison, also known as JoMo chuckled. "Yeah, amazing how fast they ran when they saw my Russian Lobaev SILK-fourteen S. I mean why? It only has a killing range of two miles, and is considered the deadliest weapon in the world. Why run like rabbits?" He had amazement in his eyes.
Randy even managed a hearty laugh. "I have no idea, JoMo..." Randy then turned serious. "Listen, I want Adam and the children out of this, that also includes Doctor Ambrose. I want the house watched, at all times, but I don't want Adam to know. I'd put a bodyguard on him, but he would eventually notice or at least the Doctor would. Stay on top of Jericho, McMahon can not give him the hospital contract. He was a fool to try." He growled again.
"Don't worry, boss. We've got a man on guard at Adam's. My brother, Brett, you remember? He took the oath last summer. He is home now, and very loyal. He is also very deadly with a weapon, or his bare hands." Ted spoke firmly.
Randy gave a nod of approval. "Excellent. Yes, I remember him very well. He has perfect credentials for the job. Well done, Teddy. Keep the pressure on McMahon. Barrett the Brit is next to go if McMahon acts up again."
AJ Styles spoke next. He was the computer expert of the group. "I do have a bit of news. Hunter Helmsley is the detective in charge of Del Rio's murder. Alberto must have drifted down the river to Helmsley's district. It happens. There is no way Del Rio can be traced back to you."
Randy frowned. "Hunter is like a dog with a bone. Make sure our insider in the force takes care of things. Warn him, Hunter is not your average cop. I'd really hate like hell to have to take Hunter down, but I will if it becomes necessary." He truly hated the thought, but to stay on top, Randy knew he had to unpleasant things at times.
AJ nodded. "Don't worry. I've hacked into their system. I can change things here and there and it will never be noticed. Helmsley is a bit preoccupied with his ill daughter."
Randy sighed. "Yes, poor Meggie Pops. She needs an insulin pump. Doctor Ambrose can't get one because of the hospital contract. I said I'd get one, but now, maybe not. The more Hunter worries about that, the less attention he will put on Del Rio's murder. Being the boss isn't easy sometimes. At least Meg is in the hospital, they can watch her." He let out another sigh.
"Just a bit longer, then you can sleep, Ran." Mike looked at his watch. The four hour wait to sleep had thirty more minutes to go.
"Hows the head, boss?" Heath Slater asked. He'd been one of the ones to get Randy away from McMahon's men.
Randy gently touched the bandage on his temple. "Not too bad. It stings a bit, but I have to say, Ambrose is very good. I'm glad he is there with Adam. That's one more pair of eyes on the kids."
Zack Ryder interjected. "So, what do you want us to do now? We've got the man power waiting."
"Have you found our leaky faucet yet? Because, I am wondering how McMahon knew we were at that club." Randy gave Ryder a very hard look.
Zack bowed his head. "No, not yet. I'm waiting for some information from a street rat. They will find out anything for a good hit. That reminds me, the next cocaine shipment arrives soon. Only I know where and when." He looked at Randy. Maybe that news would help.
Randy smiled. "Good. If you find out about the leak, you can set him up. A false shipment. McMahon would do anything to get to our supply line. Don't worry, Zack, you will take care of it." He knew Zack was a good man, and knew he would come through.
"Thanks, boss. Yes, that would be a very good way to set McMahon up. No wonder you're the boss." Zack gave Randy a nod of respect.
Randy got a look of pride in his eyes. I learned from the best. My father rules Saint Louis with an iron fist; in a velvet glove. He's offered to help with the McMahon's, but I told him no. I have to take care of this problem myself, with your help. I can't do any of this, without any of you. You will all be extremely well rewarded when this is over."
Randy drew his meeting to a close. He was more than ready to get some much needed rest. There was only one thing on his mind, Adam and their quadruplets. Whatever else happened, they could never learn the truth about who, he, Randal Kieth Orton really was.
At the same time Randy and his lieutenants met, Vince and Stephanie McMahon met with theirs.
McMahon sat with his daughter on his left, at a large conference table in his mansion. McMahon lived one block from the border with Kansas, on the southwest side of Kansas City, Missouri.
"Pull yourself together, Wade. We know how much Alberto meant to you. We need you at the top of your game. We forgive you for letting Orton escape from the bar. His weapons were too deadly. You got some good punches in on him. Maybe he is off bleeding to death, you know his hatred for hospitals." Stephanie spoke in a warm, soft voice to Alberto's lover.
Wade gave a deep sniff. "Yes, Alberto was the love of my life. Fuck, one more good hit and I would have had him. Fucking Morrison and his little weapons cache. Thank you for being so forgiving, I know I fucked up."
Vince looked at Wade. "You didn't screw up, son. You just… didn't look over your shoulder. It happens. Your loyalty to me is what matters. We will get Orton. It make take time, but we will get him." He spoke firmly.
A man with an Irish laced accent spoke. "What about the four kids. Orton would kiss your ass to keep them safe." Finn Bálor stared hard at Vince.
Stephanie looked at Finn. "No. You know the unbreakable code. We never touch children or spouses, even ex-spouses. Alberto trying to get Adam was a mistake we never should have made. I'll shoulder the blame for that. Leave the children and Adam alone." She growled her words and she meant them.
"What about lovers of ex-spouses?" A man asked with a sneer on his face and anger in his eyes.
Vince's brow arched. "What are you talking about Mister Younger?"
At five in the morning, Adam let out a whine as his alarm clock blared in his ear. Dean chuckled at the sounds Adam made as the blond tried to turn off the annoying alarm.
"Someone is not a morning person. Go shower. I'll get dressed and see to the kids. No gym today. Roman is swamped at work. Maybe tonight, but I'll wait for him to call. Now, get that beautiful, lazy ass out of bed." Dean spoke softly, then gave Adam a swat on said ass.
"Fuck you, Ambrose." Adam growled from under the covers. Adam then sat up and tickled Dean's ribs. Dean giggled like a girl.
By seven am, Adam, his children and Dean enjoyed Ida's breakfast casserole. It was made of sausage, eggs, cheese and shredded potatoes. It was delicious.
"Boys, would you like this for lunch, or sandwiches?" Ida asked as she gave Jordan more milk.
"Oh yes, please, Miss Ida. My mom made something like this on holiday mornings, but yours was kissed by angels." Dean spoke and took another bite.
Jade looked at Adam. "Was dad here last night? I thought I heard his voice. I didn't drop eaves, I promise, daddy."
Adam held his chuckle at her turn of the phrase. "Yes, Jade. Your dad was here. He came to get something he'd left once. He didn't want to wake you all. He loves you and told me to tell you. And the word is eavesdrop."
"Oh, eavesdrop. Wouldn't the house fall down?" Jade looked puzzled.
Dean chuckled. "No, not really, lioness. Adults say silly words sometimes, but, you will understand better when you get older."
Jade nodded. "I understand." She went back to eating her breakfast.
Ida packed more of the the breakfast casserole into containers for Dean and Adam's lunches, along with the last of the apple crumble. She put them in Adam's cloth lunch bag, ready to go.
"Adam, honey. I forgot, today is the day mother's doctor will be at the home. He won't see her until three or four. I know it's after school day. I maybe a little late picking them up. I am so sorry I forgot." Ida felt bad, but she'd forgotten to look at her calendar.
"No problem, Miss Ida. I'll pick them up. it's not a big deal." Dean stated matter of fact.
Ida smiled. "Thank you, dear. I really need to be there. I forgot to check my calendar."
"Ida, don't fret. You should be there. We all forget to check calendars. So kids, Uncle Dean will pick you up at five thirty. Oh, I'd better call, put you on the pick up list or they won't let you. I'll write a note, too. James, make sure Miss Betty gets it." Adam got up and went to get a pen and paper. He found what he needed in the kitchen "junk" drawer.
Adam wrote a note that gave Dean permission to pick the quads up from school. He gave Dean's Social Security Number for proof of identification. He folded the note, slipped it into an envelope addressed to Miss Betty, the secretary to the Headmaster of the Academy.
"Here, James. I will call too, but just in case." Adam put the note in the front pocket of James' book bag.
James nodded. "I'll do it, daddy. Mister Bowen will be there today. He will miss having you mix paint."
Adam laughed. "He is a nice man. I will be there next week."
"Okay my monkey lions, finish up. We have to go soon." Adam ate his last bite and finished his coffee.
Dean took his plate to the sink. "I will be at my practice until ten. See you at work. I will pick you lions up." He kissed Adam and the children. He left with his bag and briefcase.
The children and Adam took their plates to the sink. After goodbyes to Ida, they left for school. Adam pulled the Kia out of the garage. He was totally unaware of Brett DiBiase, who watched Adam's house like an invisible hawk.
By eight, Adam and Lita were in the middle of their shift change report. Seth was down at isolation with the nurse who would take over for him there. It was sad for Seth, but, isolation was too dangerous for the baby. It also meant, Seth now had another hall to look after. It was a trade off.
When Seth got back, Lita was gone, and Adam was locked in the med room. When Adam came out, he gave Seth his tray.
"I added hall C. You start today, right?" Adam asked as Seth put the tray on a cart. The carts also had pitchers of water, orange juice and milk. There were also packets of crackers and lollipops for the kids. The carts also had supplies, like gauze, tape, bandages of all sizes, and paper containers to catch any throw ups that might occur.
"Yes, Beth is taking over isolation. So I get her hall. No big deal. I will miss the isolation kids, but it's not worth the risk." Seth stated as he double checked his medicine list for Hall C. With new patients, he wanted to be sure of things.
Once again, Adam saved Megan Helmsley's room for last. He was surprised that both Hunter and Shawn were with their daughter.
"Hi guys. Hey Meggie Pops. How are you, darling?" Adam asked as he went to Meg's bedside. Megan looked to be doing a history lesson.
"I'm okay, Adam. Just doing my history. Nancy gives me video lessons. She's doing a deep clean of the house with me outta her way. Time to poke?" Megan looked at Adam and tried not to feel anxious.
"Nope. I can get a reading from your monitor. And, Doctor Ambrose said, since you are here, you can take your insulin orally today. But, if you feel an incident coming, call me. Oral is slower, but we can help if it is too slow. Less stress on your heart." Adam told Megan the good news Dean had put in her chart.
"I love that man… well… not like you do. Oh, you know what I mean. Dad, daddy, did you hear?" Megan looked over at her parents. They had been in deep conversation at the table under the window, as they ate breakfast.
Hunter and Shawn got up and went to their daughter. "Yes, baby. Good news. Can you show me how to tell what her levels are?" Shawn asked as he looked at Adam.
"Sure, look." Adam looked at the little monitor. He pushed a button. A paper about the size of a cash register receipt came out. He showed Shawn the readings.
"She gets her normal dose. Higher less, lower more. It is what the pump will do." Adam explained. He then put two large pills in a small paper cup. Adam handed the cup to Megan, then poured a cup of water for her.
"Champion sized pills." Megan laughed. She took one, then the other. Adam gave her more water.
Hunter stood silently in the background. He watched Adam as if he suddenly didn't trust him. Luckily, Adam didn't notice or he would have been extremely worried.
When Adam looked at Hunter, the older man, his former lover smiled warmly. "Nice of Dean to give her pills. He's a very good doctor. Have you seen his skills as a surgeon?" Hunter asked as he adjusted Meg's pillow.
Adam shook his head. "No, I never go in the operating room. It don't have surgical certification. It do know he is one of the best pediatric surgeons in the city. You've got nothing to worry about, I promise." It was a perfectly normal question for a parent to ask.
Hunter nodded. "Good to hear. I just thought you might have seem him work."
Adam thought of something. "Hunter, could I speak to you in the hall. Nothing major, so don't worry if you don't have time."
"No, it's okay. I was about to head out. Let me say goodbye first." Hunter gave Adam a nod.
"Okay. Shawn call if she starts to present. The orals take about twenty minutes longer, but her levels are really good. Low and it would have been a shot. See you later Meggie Pops." Adam kissed Megan's cheek. He wheeled his cart into the hall to wait for Hunter.
Hunter found Adam in the hallway. "So, what did you want?"
"Well, I heard on the radio yesterday about the murder of Alberto Del Rio. Hunter, I met him, a couple of times. He was nice enough. I don't know..." Adam was halted by Hunter. The man looked confused.
"What? Adam, lets go some place more private." Hunter's brow arched at Adam.
Adam nodded. "Sure. I have to lock this up first. We can go to the break room." He pushed his cart down the hall, Hunter followed.
After Adam locked the cart in the med room, he stopped at the station. "Seth I have to talk to Hunter. Cover for me for a few, please."
"Sure, Adam. Break room is free." Seth nodded to the break room. He also noticed Hunter looked… pensive.
Adam led Hunter to the break room. Adam poured two mugs of coffee and sat down at the table with Hunter.
"How did you meet Del Rio?" Hunter had pulled out his notebook and pen.
"I dropped an orange..." Adam explained about he first met Del Rio. "… then, that evening, I took the kids to McDonald's and he showed up there. He met the kids, we spoke, then Dean showed up. Del Rio backed off and left. There was something, the children were very leery of Del Rio. I thought he was nice, but I… felt wary of him myself. That's it. I don't know why, but I thought you should know." Adam gave a shrug and took a sip of coffee.
"Was he trying to flirt? Maybe pick you up, so to speak?" Hunter asked with his own sip of coffee.
Adam's brow crinkled. "Maybe, but, he didn't say anything untoward. But yeah, the way he smiled and talked, I guess you could say he was lightly flirting. I wasn't interested in the least though." He spoke honestly.
"Strange he would run into you at McDonald's. He didn't seem like the fast food type." Hunter made a note then finished his coffee.
"I thought maybe he was new to the neighborhood. Anyway, that's it. Do you know what happened? He was nice to me, and I hate to think of anyone being murdered." Adam finished his coffee and took their cups to the tray marked "dirty."
Hunter too stood. "I can't say, because the investigation is ongoing. If I have any more questions or you think of something else, let me know. I gotta get to the station. Thanks, Adam. Sometimes the tiniest thing opens a lead. See you later." Hunter gave Adam a brief hug and left the break room.
Adam followed Hunter, but took his seat at the nurse's station. Seth looked at Adam like a curious pup.
"I just wanted to tell him I'd met that Del Rio guy a couple of times. You know me, I have to be honest. Not that it had anything to do with his murder. Oh well. How did it go on the new hall?" Adam reached for his charts to make the medication reports.
Seth too charted. "Fine, only four patients. One is just barely a year old. Brain tumor, malignant of course. Nothing much they can do, but improve the quality of life. She is so sweet and good natured. It breaks my heart."
Adam sighed. "Yes, it's heartbreaking." There was nothing he could do but keep working.
At ten, Dean came to the nurse's station. "Hello, nurses. How are things?" Dean asked in a cheerful voice with a smile to match.
Adam and Seth smiled back. Adam spoke. "Good. Megan was very happy about the pills instead of a shot. Her levels were good. I put the print out in her chart." He handed Dean Megan's chart that he had just finished.
Dean took the chart and looked at the print out. "Good, very good. The orals are better. We can act quickly if she presents."
Dean handed Adam back the chart. "So far so good. I hope the pump can be done soon. Maybe things will straighten out." Adam replied as he took the chart.
Before anything else could be said, the elevator dinged. A rather average looking, yet handsome man stepped off the elevator. He headed for the nurse's station.
Dean casually looked up when the footsteps stopped. "Fucking hell. What are you doing here?"
