"Juvia resolves that she will never stalk Gray-sama again!"
This declaration of Juvia's was made thirty seven minutes after midnight and copious amounts of alcohol being poured down her throat (thanks Cana). There had a moment of silence where everyone stared at her, some disbelievingly, some out of sheer shock that Juvia can even admit that she had been stalking Gray, some were rather amused, and Gray just wore a weird look that suggested he had no idea what to make of this at all.
"Right," Macao drawled, "sure you will."
"I bet you won't even last five minutes," Wakaba snickered.
"Juvia shall!" Juvia snapped, her eyes blazing with a fiery passion that matched Natsu's in a battle. "Juvia will keep away from Gray-sama and give him the space he needs to realise that Juvia is his one true love. Juvia will keep this resolution until her last breath!"
"That's the spirit," Mirajane cheered her on, "and I'm sure soon enough Gray will miss you and realise the truth and you'll have such cute water babies!"
Gray choked while Juvia swooned a little. "What?!" Gray squeaked. "Juvia and I are just friends. Always will be. No space will ever change that. Ever."
For some reason this made Gajeel punch Gray, and Gray retaliated quickly, and soon enough Natsu joined in for reasons no one could work out. While the three of them were fighting, and Juvia was passed out on the floor dreaming about her children with Gray, Macao and Wakaba started taking bets from everyone else on how long Juvia's no-stalking-Gray policy would last.
To their disappointment she kept it all night as she went home and didn't try to follow Gray back to Lucy's while muttering about Love Rivals.
No one was awake on the first of January, so that didn't count.
On the second, Juvia baked cookies, helped clean Fairy Hill, and bathed with the other girls before going to sleep dreaming about Gray.
Not once did she run out to follow Gray while screaming hysterically that Love Rival might be taking advantage of him.
On the third, Mirajane raised an eyebrow as she noticed Juvia's nails had been bitten down and Juvia was a little jumpy each time the door opened, and instantly deflated.
She thought it best not to mention Gray went on a job with Natsu, Lucy, and Happy.
On the fourth, Juvia became shaky and began to bite everyone else's head off.
On the fifth, it started to thunder.
On the sixth, Gajeel found Juvia huddled on her bedroom floor under the bed, clutching a Gray doll and one of his shirts while she shook and kept muttering; "mustn't stalk Gray-sama! Mustn't stalk Gray-sama! Mustn't stalk Gray-sama! AH!" she screamed which made Gajeel and Lily flinch. "But what if Gray-sama is in a lover's embrace with Love Rival Lucy? Or Love Rival Erza? Or Love Rival Natsu?"
"Gihihihihihi."
"Really, Gajeel?" Lily whispered. "Now isn't exactly the time to be laughing at Natsu-san's possible homosexuality."
"Gihihihihihihihihi."
"AH!" Juvia wailed loudly. "GRAY-SAMA! JUVIA IS COMING FOR YOU!"
"Oh no you don't!" Gajeel caught Juvia before she could even reach the door. "You're doing really well with your resolution. Six days. That's more than what those morons though you could manage and you're going to keep proving them wrong. You're going to win that icy bastard over the normal sweet way and not the psycho stalker way."
Juvia blinked up at Gajeel. "Does Gajeel-kun really think Juvia can win Gray-sama's heart?" she asked with wide-eyed innocence and hope.
"Can't see why anyone else wants to," Gajeel shrugged.
"Oh Gajeel-kun!" Juvia hugged him. "Juvia doesn't know what she would do without you!"
"Gihihihihihi."
Juvia pulled away and smiled. "Juvia shall keep her resolution," she said firmly, "Juvia will not stalk Gray-sama."
Five minutes later both Gajeel and Lily had to use all their strength to pull Juvia away from the door as she tried to escape and find Gray once again.
And that was how she ended up spending the seventh tied to a bed.
On the eighth the rain finally stopped. Juvia was no longer shaking and Gajeel, completely exhausted and wiped out, as well as covered in bruises and scratch marks (how could she leave scratch marks when she had no nails?! Freaky Rain Woman….), had declared her cured from withdrawal symptoms.
"Come on" Gajeel shoved her fondly, "let's get breakfast. I'm starving."
"Juvia shall buy," Juvia said quietly, "as a thank you."
"No problem."
So far the eight was a good day, it was sunny despite the coldness, quiet as half the guild went out working after a long festive break, and there was no reason to suggest why anyone should have to worry about anything.
"Juvia!" Kinana and Mirajane greeted the water mage warmly, "it's been so long!" Mirajane added as Kinana went to serve Macao and Wakaba, "how are you?"
"Juvia is doing a lot better today," Juvia murmured, "though Juvia still misses Gray-sama."
"Well," Mirajane said, "I'm sure Gray misses you too. After all he's now stuck on a train on the other end of the country fighting sand monsters with Lucy, Natsu, Erza, Wendy, Happy, and Charle. I'm sure he'd much rather be with you than with Natsu's vomiting."
"Gray-sama is….stuck?" Juvia's eyes widened in horror. "In a small, dark, hot, place, with five love rivals?!"
"Five?" Macao muttered. "Which one isn't she counting? Please tell me it's one of the cats."
"Juvia!" Mirajane cried out in alarm. "It's all right! Calm down!"
"Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Juvia's poor Gray-sama!" Juvia panicked. "Stuck with so many people wanting to touch his naked body without Juvia to protect him! Juvia cannot do this any longer! Juvia cannot abandon Gray-sama any longer! Juvia breaks her resolution!" she announced. "Juvia is off to save Gray-sama!"
And with that, her resolution now shattered in pieces behind her, Juvia ran out of the guild in search of the nearest train that would take her to Gray.
"Damn!" Wakaba cursed. "If only everyone else was here to see this. Then I could announce who won our bet."
"Did anyone win our bet?" Macao scrunched his nose up. "I thought everyone had her giving up within the first day. Apart from Erza, she had Juvia lasting for forty eight hours."
"There is one," Wakaba said as he flipped through a small black book, "One person betted she'd last eight days exactly it was…." He trailed off to turn and face the perpetrator of the bet.
"Gihihihihihi."
"You're an arsehole," Lily informed him.
"Yeah," Gajeel agreed, "a rich arsehole."
