While it was considered tradition for girls to give chocolates on Valentine's Day and then boys to return the favour on White Day, Fairy Tail ha long thrown it out of the window and everyone gave gifts on both days. This, of course, led to utter chaos.
Not only did you have people running about giving chocolates to their closest friends but you had them trying to covertly make romantic gestures.
This was Mira's favourite time of the year as she enjoyed a very delicious chocolate (made by Wendy and Charle) and watched the drama unfold.
"Levy-Chan!" Droy sang as he held out a bouquet of roses and a box of chocolates. "I have come to declare my – hey!"
Jet sped past him, making Droy drop the roses, and suddenly grabbed Levy's hand before kneeling before her. "Levy-Chan!" he gasped. "I wish you a Happy Valentine's Day, and wish to present you with this – Oi!"
Droy chucked the box of chocolates at Jet's head, it smacked the ginger boy hard, and caused him to let Levy go and turn round. It was then when Droy pushed Jet away and grabbed both of Levy's hands.
"You are the prettiest gi-AHH!"
Jet tackled Droy to the floor and poor Levy was left standing now, looking mortified, as the pair of them wrestled on the ground before her.
"Here."
Mira's eyes brightened at the sight of Gajeel presenting a crudely made, but entirely sweet, steel heart that hung awkwardly on a chain. Levy gasped, equally excited by her sudden Valentine, and eagerly accepted the necklace.
"Thank you, Gajeel," Levy said softly as she gazed up adoringly at Gajeel. Gajeel ducked his head down and avoided her gaze, his cheeks a faint pink, as he shifted sheepishly. "Happy Valentine's Day."
And that was when she tip-toed and kissed him on the cheek, sending Mira's heart all a flutter over the beautiful moment, and poor Jet and Droy into tears of distress.
"LEVY-CHAN!"
Bored, as it was so typical for Jet and Droy to wail and whimper after the only female member of their team, Mira turned her attention elsewhere. Kinana's cheeks were bright pink as she clutched a scrap of paper with a heart scribbled on it to her chest, Wendy and Romeo were shyly exchanging homemade cards as well as chocolates, Cana was enjoying a delivery of chocolate wine that some mysterious secret admirer had gifted her while Erza was enjoying a very expensive chocolate cake (decorated in strawberries) that her not so mysterious secret admirer sent her (everyone knew it was Jellal, you had to be as stupid as Natsu to think it was someone else). Her eyes landed on Elfman and Evergreen as did, unfortunately, her ears.
"IT IS UNMANLY TO GIVE VALENTINES TO OTHER MEN!" Elfman roared, his face red with fury and his fists balled up. "Especially when the manliest of men has given you a MANLY Valentine's present already!"
"First!" Evergreen spat out as she jabbed Elfman hard with her finger. "I am my own woman and I can bestow any Valentine's gifts on anyone I wish. Second, Laxus-sama is the greatest and manliest man in the world. He is a beacon of light that no one can measure up to and is more deserving of chocolate than some people I can think of. And finally thirdly," this time Evergreen really dug her nail into Elfman's chest, "there is nothing romantic about being given a crappy box of chocolates with a card saying YOU'RE THE MAN!"
Mira face-palmed, he didn't…..?
"IT WAS MANLY!"
"IT WAS HORRIBLE!" Evergreen, quite rightly if you ask Mira, screamed. "Now I'm going to give my chocolates to Laxus-sama. Don't come near me till you know how to make a real romantic gesture!"
And with that, Evergreen flipped her hair, and strutted off with the greatest confidence which left Elfman gaping after her like a gormless twit, his mouth wide open. "Don't worry Elfman-nii-san!" Lisanna chirped sweetly. "Mira-nee and I will help you make a romantic gesture. I'm sure if we put our heads together we can come up with something super romantic, right Mira-nee?"
"I don't know," Mira said worriedly, "Elfman is quite useless when it comes to romance."
"Mira-nee!"
"Please Nee-San!" Elfman sobbed suddenly. "I can't lose Ever!"
"We won't have time today," this made Elfman weep even more and Lisanna to glower at her, "but don't worry Elfman," Mirajane patted his arm, "we have a whole month to come up with something huge and romantic for White Day, and then," she couldn't help but smirk which for some reason made both Elfman and Lisanna edge away from her with terrified expressions, "she'll have no choice but to swoon in your arms, marry you ,and give me lots and lots of nieces and nephews to spoil!"
"Mira-nee," Lisanna sweat-dropped, "You're getting ahead of yourself."
Mira would love to say that Elfman's fluff up was all she had to worry about this Valentine's Day but unfortunately Laxus was being pushed up against a wall as Freed, Evergreen, and Bickslow were overwhelmingly showering him with love, affection, an chocolate which made it quite impossible for Mira to give him her Valentine's Day chocolates. And then Wakaba and Macao were making so many comments about Romeo's love life that the poor adolescent looked like he wanted to dig a hole, jump in it, and die out of embarrassment, Cana was getting thoroughly sloshed and it wasn't even ten o'clock in the morning, and Erza collapsed over the bar in a great depression because she had already finished her cake.
"My greatest love…." She gasped dramatically. "Gone…."
And then there was Gray, desperately trying to hide under a table.
"GRAY-SAMA!"
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Gray jumped, bashed his head against the table, and collapsed onto the floor. "Damnit, Juvia!" he cursed. "You scared me!"
"Juvia is sorry," Juvia looked down sadly, "Juvia was only excited to see her one true Gray-sama and on Valentine's Day!" she swooned slightly. "Juvia wishes to give Gray-sama her Valentine's gifts."
"G-gifts?" Gray swallowed.
"Yes," Juvia nodded solemnly. "First Juvia has made Gray-sama the best chocolate she could make. It took Juvia three months to prefect this chocolate but Juvia had managed especially after Juvia had given up on sleep for the last three days."
Well that would certainly explain why Juvia had been extra cranky and paranoid the last few days…..she had been terrifyingly convinced that the bar stool was also trying to steal Gray from her.
"You have?"
"Yes," Juvia nodded again, "it is all worth it so Gray-sama could have the very best on the day that Gray-sama and Juvia could celebrate their love together. Juvia has also-"
Gray instantly silenced her by pressing a finger against her lip. This instantly turned Juvia's face purple as she seemed to forgotten how to breathe as her blue eyes focused only on Gray's finger. "Stay here," Gray commanded her, "I stupidly forgot your gift at home. Just wait one minute and I will be back."
"Juvia shall wait forever!" Juvia declared dreamily. "Ah! Gray-sama!"
Gray ignored her as he hightailed it out of the guild while swearing his head off. Mira strongly suspected he had forgotten about Valentine's Day altogether and was now out actually buying a gift.
Guilt was a fantastic motivator.
Just as Gray left the building, Happy entered. In one paw he held a bouquet of fishes wrapped with pink ribbon and in the other he had a small box of chocolates, he scanned the room quickly, and instantly lit up at the sight of Charle.
"Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrleeeeeeeeeeeee!" He cried out as he zoomed in on her. "Happy Valentine's Day! I brought you these!"
Charle took one look at the fish and wrinkled her nose. "No thanks," she said coolly.
Happy carried on, undaunted, probably because he hadn't heard Charle. "And I brought you this as well!" he held up the box of chocolates proudly. "It took all week to get the money but I did it!" he finished smugly.
Charle looked stunned for a moment and then slowly, hesitatingly, she accepted the box. "Thank you, Happy," she murmured, "Happy Valentine's Day."
Happy's eyes went starry as the thought of him and Charle being together forever danced through his mind.
Lily hissed when Happy dropped the fish on his head.
Finally, though it wasn't unexpectedly that they would be the last, Natsu and Lucy stumbled in. much to Mira's horror they were covered in soot and burn marks, Lucy's clothes were definitely singed round the edges and her disgruntled expression didn't give her much hope.
"I said I was sorry!" Natsu whined. "I didn't mean for it to go out of control!"
"You never mean for it to go out of control," Lucy growled, "and you're such an idiot! What did you expect? Who the hell gives someone a fiery Valentine anyway?!"
Mira tilted her head curiously. "Fiery Valentine?"
Lucy flushed at this and Natsu looked really embarrassed while Happy giggled. "Loke presented Lucy with a big bunch of roses and chocolates and a sparkly sign saying 'I love you Lucy' this morning," Happy informed Mira, and Mira nodded, she knew all about Loke's big gestures. Loke brought all the girls roses, chocolates, and sparkly signs. All of them, Mira had chucked her and Lisanna's signs out in the bin, kept the flowers, and planned to eat the chocolate later. "Natsu got jealous because he liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes Lucy and set it all on fire. He then used the fire to spell out a love message for Lucy but it got out of control and set Lucy on fire."
Mira let out a horrified screech and Happy nodded solemnly in agreement.
"Honestly," Lucy pinched her the bridge of her nose, "why can't you just give me a kiss like any other cheapskate Valentine?"
Natsu grinned radiantly. "All right!" he cheered.
And he then suddenly grabbed Lucy's wrist, pulled her towards him, and smashed his lips against hers.
Lucy shrieked and struggled against him. "I meant a chocolate kiss!" she cried out. "A chocolate kiss!"
Natsu pulled away a little bit, shot Lucy a weird look as if to say she was the weirdo, and then shrugged. "If that's what you want," he then snatched the nearest box of chocolates, stuffed them in his mouth, and then grabbed Lucy by the shoulders.
"Natsu," Lucy said warningly, "Don't you d-nnngh!"
Happy and Mira watched with morbid fascination as Natsu brought his chocolate covered lips over Lucy's. At first, Lucy seemed to try and fend him off especially since she meat the sweet and not a real chocolate kiss, but then time went by and Lucy seemed to be kissing back rather than trying to push the Dragon Slayer off.
"That's disgusting," Happy said eventually.
"Just a bit," Mira agreed. There had been a lot of tongue, saliva, and chocolate exchanged in that kiss, and while Mira was excited to know one of her favourite couples were making out, there were some things you just didn't want to see. "Ara!" she sighed sadly. "I suppose I should go back to work."
"Aye," Happy puffed, "I don't suppose you have a crowbar to separate those two?"
Mira didn't answer, she was suddenly distracted by a wondrous discovery. Just as she moved to dust off the bar, she found a small box with her name on it, and inside were a beautiful set of diamond earrings, all for her.
She looked up and caught a certain moody, mobbed by his friends, Dragon Slayer…..and they smiled.
Ah, Valentine's Day was such a wonderful day!
