Chloe was currently at her desk doing paperwork. Lucifer wasn't with her today. He had a session with Linda and then planned to work at the club the rest of the day. It was just as well. She would be doing paperwork all day, and she'd get more done without Lucifer being there. It was never a good idea for Lucifer to be at the station when they had no case. Then he got bored, and when he got bored, he drove Chloe nuts.
"Hey, Decker," someone called out.
Chloe looked up to see Maze coming her way. It had been a while since she'd seen the demon. She assumed that Maze had been bounty hunting the last few weeks. "Hey, Maze. Where have you been?"
"I had a couple of bounties. It kept me busy for a while. Where's Lucifer?" Maze asked.
"He won't be in today. We don't have an active case," Chloe said.
"And I'm guessing you'd rather not have him given that fact. Oh, well, I'll catch him later. I was just curious about that freaky ass storms that hit the entire globe a few weeks ago. What, did Daddy have another temper tantrum?" Maze asked. That was the only explanation she had for it. The only being she knew that could control the weather was God himself, and someone definitely had because it seemed to affect the entire planet.
"Uh, It's complicated. You should ask Lucifer about it," Chloe said. Maze had left town just before the truth about what happened to Lucifer came out, so she didn't know, and Chloe would not break Lucifer's confidence by telling her. That was for him to decide. Honestly, Chloe wondered if Maze would even be able to understand the significance of it. Maze wasn't like humans, or even Lucifer. She didn't know that Maze could understand how traumatic rape was and what it took from someone. Even if she couldn't though, Chloe did believe her demonic friend would understand the fact that those people had hurt Lucifer, and she'd be livid. Maze was protective of those she cared about.
"Yeah, sure. Any more bounties for me?" Maze asked.
"Maze, you just got back. Don't you want a break?" Chloe asked.
"No way, Decker. This is what I live for," Maze said with a smirk.
Just then, Chloe noticed someone approaching behind Maze. It was William Kinley. "You've got to be kidding me."
Maze turned just in time to see the man approach.
"What the hell are you doing here? Why aren't you in a cell?" Chloe asked. There's no way this guy made bail. He was facing murder charges, so his bail was extremely high, and no one from the church had been willing to even attempt to help him, given all he'd done.
Kinley chuckled. "It's good to see you again too, Chloe. Well, it turns out that a few members of the church came to see things my way after the unnatural storms that occurred recently. They've posted my bail."
Maze looked the man up and down. "Is this the priest you worked with to betray Lucifer, Decker?"
Kinley gasped and took a step back, realizing this must be the Devil's demon that he rose from Hell with him. He immediately took out a cross from his pocket and shoved it in her face. "Back, Demon!"
Maze burst out laughing before snatching the cross from his hand and carelessly tossing it over her shoulder. "Dude, don't believe everything they show on TV. I can walk into a church without bursting into flames too. Geez, Decker, next time you work with a priest, at least make sure he has half a brain."
"I will see to it that you and your master are exorcized and sent straight back to Hell!" Kinley snarled.
"A few things, moron. One, Lucifer's not my master anymore. I'm my own being. Two, this is my freaking body, you complete idiot. You can't exorcize me or Lucifer. Honestly, I've met a ten-year-old with more brain cells than you. Three, even if you could send me back to Hell, that's not a punishment. I like Hell," Maze said before turning back to Chloe. "Alright, Decker, I'm out of here. I can't be around this level of stupid without trying to beat it out of him," Maze said.
"I doubt it would work," Chloe said.
"Yeah," Maze said with a laugh before walking away.
"My dear, I worry for your soul. Consorting with demons and the Devil," Kinley said.
"You should worry about your own damn soul," Chloe said with a glare. Honestly, she was worried about humanity in general, especially now. It was already in serious jeopardy thanks to Adam and Eve. Kinley could very well seal the deal for God if he made a nuisance of himself with Lucifer. She was also worried about Lucifer. Without her help, Chloe doubted there was much Kinley could do to Lucifer, but that wasn't the point. Lucifer didn't need this. He had enough to deal with without adding a deranged priest into the mix.
"Oh, I assure you, child, my soul is fine. Anything I've done has been in service of God. Once I've completed his work, his Grace will fall upon me," Kinley said with a smile.
"Oh, something of his will definitely fall on you. I'm sure of that. Did you somehow forget the little detail that Lucifer is God's son?" Chloe asked.
"In name, perhaps, but the Father renounced him, as he does all evil. The Devil must be returned to Hell, or we will all be doomed. Surely you have seen the evidence. Those storms that occurred were not natural. They are a sign of what is to come if the Devil is not stopped," Kinley told her.
"No, they are a sign of what is to come if you don't stop! Lucifer didn't cause those storms, God did!" Chloe snarled quietly.
Kinley seemed to contemplate that for a minute. "If that's true, it only proves my point. God is sending us a message. He wants the Devil stopped once and for all."
Chloe shook her head, but said nothing. There was no reasoning with this man. He was out of his mind. She didn't know how could have ever believed a word he said. Well, actually, yes, she could. He exploited her confusion and fear. Not that that was an excuse for what she did to Lucifer. It wasn't, but she believed she would've seen the truth much sooner if she'd never met him.
"It's not too late for you, Chloe. We can still put the plan back into action, and your soul can be saved," Kinley told her.
"Get out of here. I will never help you hurt Lucifer. If you even go near him, I will arrest you," Chloe swore.
Kinley sighed, but wordlessly walked away.
Chloe pinched the bridge of her nose. She'd thought things were already bad for humanity, but they had just gotten worse. Her race was hanging on by a very fine thread. That thread might very well end up being ripped to shreds by William Kinley.
