"Say Mama," Lucy said in a sweet, coaxing, voice, "Ma-ma."
"No say Dada!" Natsu butted in. "Da-Da!"
"Mama!"

Everyone watched either fascinated or out of sheer boredom as Natsu and Lucy knelt before their fourteen month old baby and tried to get her to say her first word. Lucy was being persuasive by being extra sweet and sugary, gently trying to push her child into calling out mama while Natsu….well Natsu was just being his usual competitive self, impatiently shouting Dada in hopes to get one over for reasons no one wanted to know why.
(Though they could guess easily.)
Nashi, merely sat on the floor, her wide brown eyes staring at her mother before switching to her father as they kept calling out to her. She looked like she was watching a tennis match as her head kept moving from side to side.
The guild knew how she felt, they were doing the same.
"Come on, sweetie!" Lucy cried out. "You can say it, you know you want to say it, say Mama, Mama, Ma-ma."
"No!" Natsu yelled. "You don't want to say that. You want to be super awesome and say Dada! Dada! Da-da! Come on Nashi, you'll be the first one to ever say that first! Dada!"
(Sadly, Natsu wasn't wrong. As to date not one single Fairy Tail child's first word had been Dada…)
"Can't you guys do this in the comfort of your own home?" Laxus growled. "It's nauseating to watch,"
"Yeah," Gajeel agreed, "some of us are trying to eat here."
Mira and Levy smacked their respective partners and glowered at them for being so rude. Not that it had any affect….at all. Not only did Gajeel and Laxus continue to scowl at Natsu and Lucy but the couple had ignored them all in favour of trying to get Nashi to speak.

"Hey guys," Romeo called out as he, Wendy, Happy, Charle, and Lily, all entered the guild. "We're home. What ya up to?"
"Absolutely fuck all," Gajeel snapped, "ouch!" he rubbed the back of his head. "What the hell, Shrimp?"
"Language!" Levy glared up at him. "I'm not having another child in this guild with a cuss as their first word."
"Another?"
Levy shot a pointed look at Romeo who blinked in bewilderment…..you know, come to think of it, Romeo's Dad never told him what his first word was….
"Well," Gajeel grunted, "we're all so bored that apparently we decided it was great fun to watch Salamander and Bunny Girl try and make their kid talk."
At this point they all turned their attention back to Natsu and Lucy, who had both gone purple in the face, as they shouted more to one another than at their baby.
"MAMA!"

Romeo, Wendy, and Lily immediately sweat-dropped at the sight while Charle tutted and Happy winced. "…Someone really ought to get Nashi away from them," Lily said eventually, "this can only end in tears."
Happy decided to do it. He was a little upset that Natsu and Lucy were too busy arguing over Nashi's first word to even notice that he, their partner, had come home from a three week mission, and knew that at least Nashi would greet him warmly….even if she wants to pull his fur out.
Hesitatingly, he flew over Natsu and Lucy's heads, and held his arms out to pick up Nashi. The toddler's eyes widened with joy as she beamed a gummy smile and held her arms out towards him in reply. "Happy!" she gurgled.

"…"
It was almost comical that Natsu and Lucy seemed to have turned into stone as all their efforts were completely wasted and their precious child was now nuzzling into Happy's blue fur as she cooed his name repeatedly.
"My baby's first word…." Lucy whispered, "is Happy?!"
"So not fair!" Natsu whined.
"Happy!" Nashi repeated. "Happy! Happy! Happy!"
Each time Nashi excitedly babbled her new word, tears of despair ran down both Natsu and Lucy's cheeks as they felt completely and utterly defeated. Knowing their luck, her second word was going to be fish now.
""There, there," Alzack patted them on the back, "it could be worse," he said far too cheerfully for their liking. Both Natsu and Lucy turned to look at him furiously as if to say 'how the hell could it be worse?!' he stared back at them in a deadpan manner. "Asuka's first word was gun."
