"NATSU!" Lucy shrieked furiously. "That was my last Rolo!" she fumed. "Give it back."
"U wannait bargh?"
Lucy, and everyone else around her, took one look at Natsu's open mouth which was covered in melted chocolate and caramel, and instantly all turned green. "No thank you," Lucy mumbled as she shuddered with disgust, "and don't talk with your mouth full!" she snapped. "No one wants to see that!"
Natsu swallowed and grinned. There was still caramel in his teeth but it was much more bearable than the sight they had all been objected to before. "C'mon Luce," Natsu said as he draped an arm round Lucy, "it was only one sweet. Not the whole pack."
"It was my last Rolo!" Lucy whined. "You could have had any of them when I had more to eat but no you had to nab the last one. And you always do it!" she added with great frustration in her voice. "Always the last one and only when it's a pack of Rolos!"
"Well duh," Natsu said as if she was the biggest idiot in the world, "that's the Rolo rule."
"The what rule?"
"The Rolo rule," Natsu rolled his eyes, "Jeeze, Lucy don't tell me that you never heard of the Rolo rule, where have you been? Under a rock?"
"I think you're making this up," Lucy narrowed her eyes at him, "just to talk your way out of trouble from stealing my sweets."
"Nu-uh!" Natsu shook his head stubbornly. "The Rolo rule is a sacred and true thing, just ask Mira!" he nodded towards Mira who had been watching this whole exchanged with great amusement while she waited for Lucy to walk back to class with her. "She'll tell you that it's real."
Lucy turned to Mira with a sceptical facial expression.
"It's true!" Mira beamed. "Everyone knows the Rolo rule. It's something your parents teach you when you get your first pack of Rolos."
"And what," Lucy said flinching slightly (God knows her parents never brought her sweets directly and taught her the rules about them), "is the Rolo rule?"
"That you never eat the last Rolo!" Mira trilled. "You must always give it away but not to just any old person. It has to be an important type of person that happens to be nearby."
Lucy frowned at this. It all sounded very much made up and she was half certain that Natsu had convinced Mira to help him with a prank. "What sort of important type of person?" she asked.
"Think Lucy!" Mira cried out. "Think of all the times you've seen the others with Rolos."
Lucy's frown deepened as she thought back to only just last week.
"Gray-sama!" Juvia called out excitedly. "Juvia has found another way to express her love for you without any embarrassing slideshows on Facebook."
"Have you?" Gray said weakly as he nervously tugged at his school tie. "That's…erm….nice."
"Juvia is so pleased to hear Gray-sama say that," Juvia said reverently, "and Juvia is pleased to present Gray-sama with…." She rummaged through her school bag until she finally pulled out a large carrier bag stuffed to the brim with Rolos. "Tada!" Juvia beamed. "All of Juvia's last Rolos!"
"HOLY SHIT!" Gray's eyes bugged out at the sight of them. "That's a lot of Rolos, how many packets did you eat?"
"A lot," Juvia admitted looking paler and slightly greener than usual, "Juvia's stomach is now hurting a great deal."
Juvia ended up spending the rest of the day with her head in Gray's lap in the Nurse's office while Gray made her swear to never eat that much chocolate ever again.
And then there was that incident a couple years ago with Erza that Lucy had the misfortune to witness.
"Here."
Jellal was taken back when Erza suddenly thrusted her Rolo wrapper at him. A small bulk at the end of it suggested there was still a sweet inside. "Erm…" Jellal hesitatingly took it. "I suppose I was going to make a trip to the bin anyway," he mumbled.
And then promptly he dropped the wrapper and sweet in the bin.
Erza's mortified facial expression remained there for the entirety of the day, scaring all little children everywhere.
And just last month there had been two incidences with Rolos if Lucy remembered correctly.
Elfman held out a small, chocolate, sweet which looked even smaller in the giant palm of his hand. "Nee-san, would you like my last Rolo?" he offered sweetly.
"No thank you, Elfman," Mira smiled sweetly, "I'm still full from my lunch."
"Lisanna," Elfman turned to face his other sister. "Would you like to have my last Rolo? It's very manly to offer the last Rolo to some- Ouch!" he yelped as Evergreen suddenly whacked him over the head with her exercise book. "What the hell was that for, Ever?"
"What do you think, you arsehole?" Ever glowered. "You could at least offer me the last Rolo."
"Like you'd offer me your last Rolo," Elfman scoffed, "you'd offer it to Laxus."
"Well at least Laxus is a Man!"
Elfman and Evergreen then argued but Lucy's attention had been dragged away from them when she heard Levy call out meekly. "Lu-Chan! Help!" and found the tiny blue-haired girl standing between an arguing Jet and Droy as Levy held up a Rolo between her fingers.
"I'm having Levy's last Rolo!" Jet shouted.
"No," Dry glared, "I'm having Levy's last Rolo!"
"No I am!"
"No, I am!"
"No I am!"
"No, I am!"
"No I am!"
"No, I am!"
"No I am!"
"No, I am!"
"No I am!"
"No, I am!"
"No I am!"
"No, I am!"
CHOMP!
Jet and Droy froze in their argument and turned round horrified as Gajeel's lips had wrapped themselves round Levy's fingers as his razor sharp teeth sank into the chocolate treat.
"LEVY-CHAN!" They wailed as they clung to one another, tears streaming down their cheeks. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
"Gajeel!" Levy hissed. "You almost bit my fingers off!"
"Gihihihihihi!"
And if Lucy thought hard enough she could remember a Halloween Party when she was eleven in which she got to observe Zeref and Mavis…
Zeref and Mavis were hidden in a dark corner of the living room, ignorant of the loud music, Natsu's booming laugh as he sat on Gray, and everyone cheering the fight on, as they made googly eyes at one another and shared a packet of Rolos between them.
They took in turns to pull out a sweet and instead of eating it themselves they gently pressed the chocolate against the other's lips to for them to eat it.
It was really sweet in a sickly, disgusting, way.
"Last one," Zeref observed quietly, "do you want it?"
"No," Mavis replied softly, "you should have it."
"But I would really like it if you had it," Zeref said shyly, "please."
They then stared at one another, their loving look took on a serious edge to it, before Mavis finally relented, took hold of the chocolate, and place it between her lips.
She then tip-toed so she could press her lips against Zeref's and they shared a deep, chocolatey, kiss.
"…..love," Lucy said weakly as realisation crashed over her, "you give the last Rolo to the person you love the most."
"It has to take a very strong love for you to part with the last bit of chocolate," Mira said solemnly, "which is why sometimes people save the last one for ages. Poor Wendy had no one to give hers to once and ended up feeding a stale Rolo to her cat. After many tears, a trip to the Vets, we explained to her it doesn't have to be romantic love and we'll happily eat her last Rolo for her because we all love her very much."
"Uh-huh," Lucy said disbelievingly, "and you're sure this is not a scam that Natsu came up with so he can eat free chocolates?"
"It's not a scam!" Natsu protested. "And it's not any free chocolate, if I wanted free chocolate I'd eat all the crap Juvia makes Gray, no it's the last Rolo, and only the last Rolo, and not just any last Rolo, the only one I want is yours. Give it to no one else, got it?" he shot Lucy a fiery, intense, look. "Only I'm allowed to have your last Rolo."
Lucy's cheeks burned brightly. "I…..you….Rol….last…" Lucy stammered as Mira tried not to laugh. Natsu smirked and it was his smugness that pushed Lucy from instant shyness to absolute fury. "WHO THE HELL SAID YOU'RE THE PERSON I LOVE THE MOST?!"
"It's only fair!" Natsu shouted indignantly. "After all, if I actually liked the damn chocolate, you'd be the one that would get my last Rolo."
By the time Lucy got to class her face was redder than Erza's hair while Natsu pouted like a child and Mira was happily humming the Wedding March.
