Return to Castle Cove

Chapter 3

The phone was ringing, but Beverly couldn't be bothered to pick it up. Much like Dr. Valiant and K.C. Feather on page one hundred and seventy-two, she had better things to do.

Sable, having used her feminine wiles to convince the dimwitted, but devilishly handsome local sheriff of K.C. Feather's innocence when the facts and cold hearted logic hadn't been enough, still needed to uncover the real killer but for now was happy to have regained her old English teacher her freedom.

Back staying at Mrs. Feather's house, hearing the sound of footsteps on the creaky old stairs, knowing that her elderly mentor had turned in for the night shortly after having taken advantage of the early bird special at Beau Doxin's Diner, Sable was fearful that it might be a prowler - or worse yet, one of the angry townsfolk having learned of Sable's presence in town had come to take their revenge upon her for exposing all of their secrets. Might it even be Mrs. Sampson's killer come to stop Sable from meddling further and uncovering his or her identity?

Making her way to the door on bare feet, Sable carefully and quietly turned the knob. She peered out down the hall from the guest room door on the right at the top of the stairs.

Sable was surprised and yet not surprised to realize that the form she spotted down the hall heading into the master bedroom was not an uninvited intruder, but rather Cabot Cove's resident curmudgeonly leprechaun, Dr. Valiant.

Fearful that the stress of being cruelly arrested, thoroughly interrogated, and falsely imprisoned as a murder suspect had caused K.C. Feather's delicate health truly to take a turn for the worse and thinking that she had called for the doctor, Sable reached for her robe and slippers to follow after.

Reaching the bedroom door, Sable started to raise a hand to knock before entering …

But just as her hand was about to meet with the wood, Sable heard a most unexpected sound from behind the door and paused.

Reconsidering her actions, instead Sable slowly turned the knob.

Careful not to make a sound, she pushed open the bedroom door just enough to see inside.

It was then that Sable discovered that Dr. Valiant most certainly was not there on official business.

No, he wasn't there as a doctor.

He was there to play doctor and that was not a thermometer that Dr. Valiant was using to check K.C. Feather's temperature.

"Beverly!"

Startled, Beverly dropped the book she had been holding, losing her place.

"What is so blasted engrossing about that book? I have been calling your name for the last two minutes! Where did you put that new shipment of lollipops and for the love of all that is holy would you please answer that phone!"
