"What are you doing?"

It was a quiet day and in order to escape Juvia's frantic spring cleaning (which led to tears of apology because she had shouted at the children for leaving their rooms a mess) Gray took his children to the guild building to discover that Natsu and Nashi had built some monstrosity with the guild's tables, chairs, and sheets stolen from the Infirmary.

Natsu stuck his head out from beneath the sheets. "Building a fort," he said as if Gray was a moron, "what do you think, Slush Brain?"

"Building a fort?" Gray snorted. "Making a mess more like, Ash Brain, I could make a fort better than you with one hand tied behind my ba-ARRGH!"

"Nashi," Natsu attempted to sound stern but his lips were twitching and his eyes were twinkling merrily, "you know better than to hit people in the shins with your bow."

"He was insulting your fort!" eight year old Nashi protested. Her little face screwed up with indignation on Natsu's behalf. "And lying! This is the best fort ever! Not a mess!"

"Best fort ever?!" Ur said incredulously. "It looks like a dump, my Dad can definitely build a better fort than that with both hands tied behind his back."

"Yeah right!" Nashi retorted. "Our fort has a secret sweet stash."

"Oh, a secret sweet stash," Ur said mockingly, "how twee and exciting. My Dad can make towers and spirals and battlements and all sort of awesome castle things for our fort without blinking."

Furious sparks danced round Nashi as she stepped closer to Ur. "My Dad can melt your Dad's fort without blinking!" she said furiously.

"Yeah?" Ur stepped closer. "Well my Dad can obliterate your Dad's fort without even looking!"

"Yes!" Tulia agreed. "Our Daddy's fort would beat yours hands down!"

"No way!" Nashi shook her head. "My Dad is the best Fairy Tail mage ever which means he's the best fort builder ever. His fort is the best and whatever icicle your Dad makes will be burnt to the ground before yours can inflict any damage to ours."

"Yeah right!" Ur snorted. "Your Dad can't even move without destroying the wrong thing. Your fort would be in smithereens before your Dad even thinks about destroying ours."

"Yeah, well," Nashi stuttered slightly because Damnit, Ur was right. Though her mother had said that her Dad had gotten better at not destroying things there was still a lot of reward money vanishing for repairs. "You don't even have a fort now so how can you even think of competing against my Dad's awesomeness!" she burst out smugly.

"You just wait!" Ur scowled. "My Dad will build one now and it will be a billion times better than this rubbish tip!"

"Yeah right!" Nashi sniggered. "We took all the tables and sheets. This is the biggest, best, fort in the world."

"We'll see about that," Ur said dangerously. He then turned to face his father with a hopeful expression. Tulia also looked up with big wide eyes so they could both plead their case for a fort. "Hey Da-"

"I CAN TOO MAKE A BETTER FORT THAN THIS!" Ur, Tulia, and Nashi all sweat-dropped as they realised while they were arguing over which father could build the better fort…so were their fathers (which one was supposed to be the parent again?). Gray and Natsu were right in each other's faces as they shoved one another childishly. "JUST WATCH ME!" Gray continued to bellow as he then clapped his hands and a pale blue white glow shone over them. "ICE MAKE FORT!"

On the opposite side of the guild building Gray had built the biggest, grandest, ice palace imaginable with towers and gothic architecture and even, detailed exactly, furniture. Ur and Tulia whooped in excitement and instantly ran towards it to go and play. "See, sucker!" Ur called back with a smirk. "My Dad's fort is better than yours!"

Gray followed looking incredibly smug and leaving a fuming Natsu and Nashi behind.

"That's not a real fort," Nashi scowled as she crossed her arms sulkily, "that's a glass palace."

"You're right," Natsu agreed as he ruffled Nashi's hair. "It's nothing but a heap of breakable glass." He smirked dangerously, his canines peeking out. it was a smirk Nashi had rarely seen but according to her mother it was one he wore when he knew he was going to win something (which is why Nashi very rarely saw it. Mum always won the arguments). "Let's show how vulnerable it is and how awesome we are."

Nashi grinned in reply as Natsu picked up her bow and handed it to her.

"FIRE ARROW!"

"FIREBALL CATAPULT!"

Fire flew across the guild building and blasted Gray's icy palace. Nashi's arrows did little arm but Natsu repeatedly huge ball of fire managed to melt half the castle causing it go lopsided and Tulia to scream as she clung to one of the pillars.

Natsu and Nashi cackled and high-fived one another.

"SCREW YOU, NATSU!" Gray bellowed furiously while Ur went to comfort his whimpering sister. "UR, WITH ME – ICE MAKE CANNON!"

Gray's fort not only mended itself but came with new additional, gigantic, cannons which Gray and Ur proceeded to fire a series of ice balls without any let up. Natsu and Nashi responded with more arrows, fireballs, and whatever Nashi could muster up in between.

Soon enough the guild was taking a battering from ice, fire, arrows, and the odd bit of wool.

This was the disaster that Gajeel and Gilly walked into. Gajeel quickly turned into his metal form and covered a squealing Gilly from the onslaught of ice and fire. "Oi!" he growled furiously. His voice echoing from within his metal form. "Knock it off you fu- morons!" he quickly corrected himself, remembering the last time he swore in Gilly's hearing lead to the worst telling off ever from his wife. "What the hell are you two doing?"

He wasn't good at the whole not swearing thing.

Natsu and Gray pointed at one another. "HE STARTED IT!" they both shouted.

"That…." Gajeel's eye twitched, "doesn't answer anything you idiots!"

"Shi-Chan!"

"Gilly-Chan!"

Taking advantage of the temporary ceasefire, Gilly had wiggled out from her father's protective group and ran across the guild towards her best friend. Nashi held her arms out in return and the pair met in a bear hug as if they hadn't seen each other in years instead of just yesterday.

"What are you doing?" Gilly asked as she eventually pulled away. "It looks like a war zone here."

"It is a war zone," Nashi grinned. "Dad and I were making a fort and then Uncle Gray and smelly Ur insulted it and challenged us by building their fort."

"Your Dad makes forts with you?"

There was a wistful look on Gilly's face that not even a blind person could miss. Gajeel and Gilly had a lot of father/daughter time but it usually consisted of either training or Gilly sitting on Gajeel's lap as she read to him.

It was time to change that.

Gajeel placed a hand on Gilly's head and ruffled her black locks. "You don't want a crappy fort like that, kid," he said gruffly, "You want an awesome, impenetrable, one with a secret library."

And before anyone knew it Gajeel went out of his way to build a metal fortress out of all the spare metal he could find. Including all of Mirajane's cutlery. The result was hideous and steadily became more hideous as the previous war between Fullbuster and Dragneel turned into a three-way war.

They had managed to successfully break every window and burn some of the rafters down by the time Erza arrived.

This time not only did they ceasefire but the so called parents in the room froze in mid fight and seemed to have forgotten how to breathe.

It was quite amusing, with Natsu holding one leg up like a dog, Gray's hands were in the middle of a rather camp gesture, and Gajeel just looked weird stuck mid-way through a transformation.

"What are you three doing?!" Erza boomed. Her hair crackling with fury, her eyes glowing menacingly, and her sword reading to murder. Her terrified son watched her fearfully from behind the doorway. "The building is almost destroy…ed…" Erza trailed off, her hand holding the sword slowly lowering itself down and she took in the destruction and chaos that had been caused. "Are you three building forts with your children?" she demanded to know.

"No," Gray said sarcastically, "we're built these to amuse ourselves and then we kidnapped the local children so they would play with us."

Fortunately for Gray, Erza hadn't paid any attention to the sarcasm as she came to realise quickly that she had just missed out on some brilliant fun with her own child.

Her sword and armour vanished as she quickly re-quipped into her construction worker uniform and went down on one knee like a knight before her son.

"Edward," she said solemnly, "I vow to you on my honour as your mother that I will build an even better and stronger fort that these morons for you to play in."

"Erm," Edward sweat-dropped as he wondered exactly how his mother took this leap of logic, "thank you?"

Erza built her fort out of all of her spare armours and costumes before she armed it with all of her swords and various other weapons…..honestly, the others had no chance after that.

But it didn't stop them from continuing the fight and making it a four way war.

At this point the children sort of ducked into a corner of their parent's fort and left their parents to it as they all started to wish the grown-up parent could come and rescue them from this never-ending nightmare.

"Hem, hem."

As if the Gods heard the children, the fight ceased as Mira's cough dragged Natsu, Gray, Gajeel, and Erza's attention to the guild door where she stood looking highly amused. Beside her was Lucy, whose eyebrow was twitching with barely suppressed fury, and her hands were on her hips. Juvia stood nearby with a disapproving look on her face, Levy's cheeks were puffed out angrily, and Jellal…well Jellal just looked stunned.

"Natsu," Lucy snapped angrily, "when I said spend quality time with your daughter I did not mean destroy the guild building."

"Gray-sama Juvia is very cross with you!" Juvia started off sternly but her face softened to a resigned, sulky, expression. "Though we both know that's not going to last very long."

"Gajeel," Levy growled dangerously.

"Erza….." Jellal blinked, unable to think of anything, "I am speechless."

"Wait! No!" Natsu scrambled out from the fort and threw himself onto his wife. "Luce!" he cried out as he grabbed hold off her leg. "It was all Gray's fault don't ban me from the bed!"

"Natsu I haven't said that!" Lucy exploded as she tried to kick Natsu off of her. "Get off my leg before you really do get banned from the bedroom!"

"Juvia," Gray pleaded, the smallest of pouts forming on his lips. "It was all Natsu's fault he goaded me."

"Juvia understands and instantly forgives Gray-sama," Juvia said almost serenely, "but that doesn't excuse him from being a bad influence on Ur-Kun and Tulia-San!" she snapped back to disapproving.

"C'mon Shrimp!" Gajeel whined. "It was just a bit of fun. Not like I murdered anyone."

"Hmmph!"

"Jellal," Erza rushed up to her husband before she lowered her neck in repentance. "I humbly apologise for any embarrassment I have caused but I had been challenged as a parent."

"…How?"

Nashi, Ur, Tulia, Gilly, and Edward all watched utterly mortified as their insane, childish, parent started to chase their sensible…..less insane, parent out of the guild building with their pleas of forgiveness and silly excuses.

All five of them sweat-dropped. "Our parents are so embarrassing!" they all groaned in unison.

"There, there," Mira patted them all on the head, "that's what you got Aunt Mirajane for! I'm your totally cool aunt who makes up for your parents." She smiled and winked at them deviously and they were all unable to not smile back. "That's better," Mira beamed as she pulled Tulia in for a quick cuddle, "I like seeing you all smile. Now how about we get all of this cleaned up before Uncle Laxus comes-"

"What the fuck happened here?!"

Laxus came back early from his guild masters' meeting to find that his building was utterly destroyed. Covered in half melted slush, torn up bits of metal, ash, and Erza's clothes as all of the guild's belongings were in ugly piles of lump that used to be Natsu and Gajeel's fort…..oh and there was still a giant fucking ice palace in the middle of the guild building.

The furious glare on Laxus' face was an understatement to how angry he truly was at that moment.

(And cleverly guarded the inward weeping he was doing as he mentally calculated the cost of repairs for this new pile of destruction. Why did he want to be guild master again?)

"Oh dear," Mira covered her mouth in an attempt to hide a smile, "too late."

Unsurprisingly forts were now on the banned list for Fairy Tail. This did not, however, prevent Natsu and Nashi from building another one in the forest the next time Lucy wanted peace and quiet and accidentally starting a war with the Vulcans…..

But that's another story altogether.
