It was a boring afternoon in Lucy's apartment and Happy was soaking in the sunshine that was seeping through her bedroom window when a gleeful Lucy approached him.
"Tee-hee!" Lucy giggled weirdly. Happy stared back bewilderedly as he briefly wondered if Lucy finally lost it. "I went shopping," she informed him grandly, "and look what I got you." She held out the hand she had been hiding behind her back giddily and Happy stared down unimpressed at the ball of pale blue yarn that was currently lying in the palm on her hand. "Tada!"
"Seriously?" he drawled out in a bored tone. This wasn't the first time someone brought him a ball of yarn. For some reason, that Happy has never figured out, all the girls were determined give him some. He thinks it might be a weird human mating ritual but he hasn't quite worked out why. "A ball of yarn? What do you expect me to do with it? Roll it about on the floor and play with it?"
Lucy glared at him. "That is usually what cats do with it," she sniffed haughtily.
"Not this ca-"
"BALL OF YARN!"
Happy and Lucy's eyes bugged out as a pink blur suddenly streaked across the room leaving a gust of wind behind it that blew at their fur, hair, and Lucy's skirt, and the ball of yarn suddenly disappeared from Lucy's hand. They whirled round to find Natsu sprawled out on his back as he kicked and pawed at the ball of blue yarn which was quickly getting tangled round his limbs.
"NATSU!" Lucy bellowed furiously. "That was for Happy! Not for you!"
"What?" Natsu protested. "Happy was never going to play with it."
And with that he happily rolled over and carried on pulling and kicking and clawing at the blue yarn leaving Lucy and Happy sweat-dropping in peace.
"…Are you sure it's a cat thing?" Happy asked.
"Oh please," Lucy snorted, "as if you and Natsu are a normal cat and human pair."
Happy preened as if she had given him the best compliment in the world while Natsu started to choke as he suddenly, accidentally, wound up tangling the yarn round his neck.
Lucy sighed, as she went to detangle Natsu, and wondered what her life had become.
(Still…she wouldn't trade it for the world.)
