Midnight Shock

Colonel Robert E. Hogan was half asleep in his bunk that was in his office within Barracks 2. He was finally glad that he was getting sleep. London had been sending missions his way for weeks now, and he was very tired from them. There would be times that he would not get any sleep at all for days. Now he was between being asleep and being awake. A dream started to form behind his eyes. It was of him being in London. He was walking around the air base, but something was off about this. There was no one around the base at all. He walked around looking for someone. Panic started to build in his chest. He called out his adopted father's name hoping and praying that he would find the man that saved his life years ago. He found himself running from room to room within the base. Hogan ran into the hanger and looked for any sign of life. He looked around and saw the planes were all there. Then he could feel someone standing behind him. He turned on his heels and felt his heart fall. There in front of him was a young girl that he knew. He looked at her face and felt the icy fear run threw him. She was covered from head to toe in blood. She stood there in front of him with tears running down her cheeks.

"Snow?" He whispered in the empty room. He moved his hand out to touch her cheek, but she fell into his arms. "SNOW!" He screamed out her name as he looked into her now dead still eyes.

"COLONEL HOGAN!" Hogan jumped in his bunk. He looked to his right and saw Sergeant Schultz standing beside his bunk. Hogan laid himself back down. 'It was only a dream.' He thought to himself as he was now trying to calm himself down. The fat Sergeant had scared the hell out of him. He looked over at the bigger man.

"What the hell Schultz?! You scared the hell out of me!" He breathed in deep.

"I'm sorry Colonel Hogan, but the big shot wants to see you right now. Plus it sounded like you were having a bad dream." The Sergeant told him with worry in his eyes. Hogan looked over at the man who in away he saw as an uncle.

"What? Why does he want to see me at." He looked at his watch. "At 12:16am?" Hogan asked him.

"Well I think that it has to do with the new….person in the camp." Schultz had to stop and think of how he was going to word who was here. Hogan moaned and got out of his bunk. He climbed down the ladder that was on his bunk. Hogan grabbed his clothes that he always wore off the table in his office. He started to take off his sleeping clothes. Once off he started to put on his other clothes. As he was fixing his belt he looked at the Sergeant.

"Who is it? Are they American or British?" He asked him. Schultz looked away and pressed his lips together.

"Well they are both." He finally said.

"What?" Hogan asked as he placed his hat on his head. He followed Schultz out of his office and into the main part of the barracks. He was at the door when he heard Newkirk say something to him.

"What's going on Colonel?" He said in a tired British accent.

"I don't know, but you go back to sleep." Hogan said this and walked out of the barracks. Newkirk laid his head back down and went back to sleep.

Hogan walked up the stairs to the Kommandantur. He opened the door and walked in. He looked behind him as he closed the door. When he turned around he saw Colonel Wilhelm Klink standing in front of his office door. He could see that Klink had papers in his right hand.

"Okay Klink, what the hell is the big deal that you had to have me woken up at this time of night?" Hogan asked the man who he was now standing in front of.

"I thought that you would want to know about this as soon as possible." He told him. Hogan was about to ask Klink what he was talking about when Klink handed the papers that were in is hand to Hogan. Hogan took the papers and started to read them.

Klink watched the younger Colonel's eyes get widen quick. Hogan read the first paper which was a birth certificate. As Hogan looked at the paper he couldn't believe his eyes. He then looked at Klink who motion for him to read the next and last paper. Hogan moved the certificate under the new paper. This new paper was a letter. Hogan started to read the letter. His eyes widen and started to tear up as he read.

Dear Robert

I am writing this letter to tell you about something that has happened, and something I hope you already knew.

Three days ago at 9:00pm, Major Rivers found out that Mary is not his daughter. That she is yours! When Mary told me about what had happened. I didn't believe it at first that George would be this angry, but I know of his hatred for you. Mary told me that George had came into the house and confronted Elizabeth about who Mary's father was. Elizabeth tried to calm him down, but it didn't work. Mary then told me that George left the room. In that time Elizabeth got Mary out of the house, but Mary did tell me that George did kill Elizabeth. He then chased after Mary, who was able to hide from him. She said that he would have found her if it wasn't for a air raid coming toward them. She then told me that George promised to hunt her down, and that he would kill her like he had done to her mother. I sent your daughter to you because Mary said that this was her mother's last wish to do so. I know that you will keep her safe, and I know that Kommandant Klink has or will read this and I hope he does. That he will also help you keep her safe. You both will need to work together to keep Mary safe from George. He will come after her and he will kill her. I know that this is a shock to you, and hope that you have always known that Mary was your daughter. Because my dear adopted son I have always known, and I was hoping that you would except Mary and love her. She has always known that you were her father. That's why she was always around you and wanted to be with you. Mary needs you now son, so be there for her and protect her from all that the world will try to put her threw. I will also tell you this. That Mary will need a bodyguard. She is a sixteen year old beautiful woman, and yes you and Colonel Klink will talk to every man there to not to touch her. But there will be a few that might not listen or care. So pick the best man you have to help protect her and to be with her every minute of the day. Hell it may not be a bad idea to have him sleep in the room with her. Remember son that this is your little Snow, and not one of your men so be nice and don't worry about parenthood not kicking in. It will kick in as soon as you hold your little girl.

Your Father General Robert Butler

Hogan let the papers drop from his hand. He was looking at the ground. He could not see anything from the hot tears flooding his eyes. He could feel like his knees would not be able to hold him much longer. He felt like he was going to hit the floor at anytime. Lizzie was dead and his daughter was here with him! He had always question himself if he was in fact Mary's father, but the thought would only last for a few minutes then fade away. How could he have not realized that Mary was his! Then Hogan felt his knees give out on him. He closed his eyes and braced himself to feel the pain of hitting the floor, but it never came. Hogan opened his eyes and looked over to his left and there he saw Klink holding him up.

"Robert, you have to pull yourself together. Your daughter is in my office. She is so scared and if she sees you like this then she will panic. That girl has been through hell. She told me that the woman that was supposed to bring her to Hammelburg was killed two days ago. Your daughter also told me that the woman was killed in front of her. That the Captain that brought her here. Had saved her from being killed as well." Hogan listened to Klink speak. He knew that he had to pull himself together. That Klink was right; if Mary saw him like this then she would never feel safe.

"Okay, your right." Hogan said softly. He stood back up but almost fell again. Hogan was shocked when Klink caught him again. Hogan stood up again and calmed himself down. He wiped his eyes dry and looked at Klink. He nodded his head and Klink walked him over to his office door. Klink opened the door and Hogan saw her.

Mary looked up from the chair that she was in. The girl was pale and looked as tired as he was. Mary looked at him with loving pale blue eyes. He had almost forgotten how pale they were. Hogan smiled at her. He noticed that she was wearing a long sleeved dark blue shirt. Her hands were placed on her legs that was covered by a dark brown skirt that stopped at her ankles. She moved her legs to the side and showed a pear of same color brown ankle boots. Hogan knew that these clothes were not found anywhere but in Germany. He walked over to her and knelt in front of his daughter.

"My little Snow, you are safe now. I will not let anything happen to you not now or ever." Mary smiled and leaned down quickly and wrapped her arms around her father's neck. Hogan smiled and did the same. Mary started to cry. She was finally in her father's arms. That the fear that she had of him not wanting her was now gone. Hogan soon lost his balance and they both fell onto the floor. Mary was crying so hard against his neck and shoulder. Hogan couldn't hold it anymore. He started to cry as well. He moved his hand up to her head and cuffed it. He noticed that he was talking to her.

Klink stood there and listen to Mary cry in her father's arms, but he wasn't prepared for Hogan to start to cry as well. Klink closed his eyes and listened to Hogan tell his daughter that she was safe. That he was sorry for not being there for her. That he would spend every moment of his life making it up to her. He would always be there for her no matter what happened. Klink could feel his own eyes get hot from the tears that was trying to fall. He knew that Hogan meant every word that was coming from his lips. The words were coming from his soul. Soon both of them calmed down and Mary leaned up and wiped her father's tears away from his face. She smiled at him.

"I know you will be there for me Papa." Hearing that come from his daughter made Hogan smile wide. He looked up at Klink when he heard him speak.

"I think we all need to go to bed." Mary looked up at the man in front of her and her father. Hogan moved and stood up then helped Mary up to her feet.

"I think Klink is right." Her father said in a tired voice from crying so hard.

"Okay, but where am I going to sleep at though?" Mary asked looking at both men. Klink smiled at her.

"You and your father will sleep in my Private Quarters. Your father will move in with me and you my dear will sleep in the guest room." Mary was shocked to see a kind smile on this man's face. She had thought that this German officer would not be so nice or would smile at her with a genuine smile.

"Wait? I'm moving in with you?" Hogan asked and pointed a finger at Klink. Klink looked at Hogan and smiled.

"Yes, because it will not look right for a young lady to be alone with me while her father is staying in a barracks. Besides you have a tunnel to my Quarters so you can use it and go on with your sabotaging." Hogan looked at Klink with huge eyes.

"What?" He asked.

"Come on Hogan. I have been playing a part this whole time. I decided to play this part when I was assigned here. I did it to get information from others and use it how I wanted to." Klink could see the look on Hogan's face and smiled wide at him.

"Now Hogan do you really think that I would go along with your ideas or let you manipulate me for one of your schemes?" Klink asked him. Hogan's eyes were still wide but a smile came to his face.

"Wait, you knew about why I am here and you never stopped me?" He asked the German officer. Klink nodded his head while still smiling at Hogan.

"How long have you known about this?" Hogan asked him. Klink turned his head a little and looked up at the ceiling.

"Well I thought that it was odd that you were brought here and not taken to a Oflag. So I knew that you were here for a reason. But I did figure it out about three weeks after you were first brought here. I went ahead with my plan to play the dummkopf Kommandant. Mostly so that you could do your job and to fool my fellow officers to think I was not bright enough to be apart or to see what you and your men were doing." Klink was now looking at Hogan who was looking at him like a child on Christmas morning.

"Wow, you have really fooled everyone to think that. You're a really good actor." Hogan smiled at the other man. He had to say that Klink was damn good at playing his part this whole time. Klink smiled and leaned in toward Hogan.

"I fooled you as well Hogan." Hogan was now speechless and was also little embarrass that he didn't see that all this time Klink was playing a roll.

Mary stood there listening to the two men go back and forth with their banter. She was now looking at her father who was now a little red in the face. She watch as her father moved his hand back behind his head to rub his head and neck. She glanced over at the man who had made her father blush. He was still smiling, but the look in his eyes was that of a teasing look. Mary smiled to herself. She now knew what one of them was hiding from the other. Mary pushed her smile away and cleared her throat. Both men looked over at her.

"I think that is a wonderful idea." She told both men. Klink smiled at her and looked back over toward Hogan.

"Lets all go to my little house and go to bed."

"Yeah your right. It is getting late and I know you are tired Mary." Hogan smiled at his daughter. Mary smiled and nodded her head.

They all left Klink's office and walked out of the Kommandantur. As they walked over the grounds; Mary looked around and noticed that there were guards everywhere. She looked up and saw men in towers with spot lights. Mary looked at her father as he leaned over and told her.

"See there are guards and spot lights everywhere. George will not be getting in here so easily. Plus my men will be looking out for you, and in the morning I will tell Newkirk that he will be your bodyguard." As Hogan spoke he put his arm around Mary. Mary had smiled when he had done this, but the smile had faded away when he said the name of the man that he was going to sign as her bodyguard.

"Are you sure that he will be able to keep me safe?" She asked him.

"Yes honey. Newkirk will keep you safe. He is the most skilled out of all of my men. He knows how to throw knifes, and he is a bowman too. He can do about anything." Hogan laughed lightly. Mary smiled as they reached the house.

She looked up and smiled at the house. The house was small but was cute. They all walked up the steps and threw the door. Mary looked around and saw that the Kommandant had really made this home away from home. Her father and this man that her father called Klink; took off their coat and jacket. They both took off their hats and placed both on a coat hanger that was near the door. Hogan turned a looked at Mary.

"Mary?" Mary looked at her father and smiled at him.

"Yes?"

"Why don't you have a coat?" He asked her. Mary looked at her arms with a sheepish smile.

"Will I did have one but when Bonnie and I were confronted by these men in black. They were asking Bonnie questions about who she and I were. She was telling them that we were mother and daughter going to see her mother, but they didn't believe her. They just pulled out a gun and shot her in the head. There was a Captain who was called there. He saw what had happened and saw that they were about to kill me too. He stopped them and told them that he would take me. When he and I were in his car. He asked for my papers and I gave him what I had; which was the letter and my birth certificate. He read them. He then told me that he was going to bring me here to this camp." Hogan and Klink saw that Mary was no longer smiling, but was almost in tears. Hogan moved closer to his daughter as she kept talking about what had happened two days ago.

"After he had said that to me. He noticed that I had Bonnie's blood all over me. He told me that I would have to clean up and he would buy me some new clothes. Which he did, but he would give me his long coat to wear if we were outside to long." Mary finished with a small smile. She looked up at her father who was looking at her with a sad but painful look on his face. Mary smiled and moved toward him. She wrapped her arms around him and gave him a loving hug. She knew that she had been threw a lot but she didn't want her father to feel bad that he was not there. It took Hogan a second before he hugged her back.

"You have been threw so much. I wish that I would have been there threw all of it and maybe in away could have stopped some of it from happening." Klink watched as Hogan laid his head on top of Mary's.

"But you are here in her life now. So you will be able to protect her." Hogan and Mary looked over at Klink who was looking at Hogan. They both smiled as Hogan ended the hug.

"Your right about that Wilhelm." Klink smiled and blushed a little as Hogan used his given name. Mary saw this and now knew both of the men's secret's.

"Wilhelm?" Klink looked at Mary as she said his name. "That's your name?"

"Yes it is."

"I like that name. It is the German version of William isn't it?" Mary asked him.

"Yes it is. How did you know that?" Klink asked her.

"I learned German as well as other languages when I was very young." Mary said with a smile. Klink's eyes widen with shock. He never thought that she would want to learn his language so young as well as others. Hogan smiled at his daughter.

"Snow is a quick learner. She knows just about anything you can think of." Mary looked at her father with a small blush on her face.

"Really?" Klink asked her.

"Oh yeah, I once showed her how to start and what to push to fly a plane. I bet you right now that she could tell you how to fly one." Hogan spoke about his daughter with such proudness in his voice.

"Papa you make it sound like I know so much and can do so much." Mary told her father. Hogan smiled a little bit more as he saw his daughter's face get a little bit more redder. Klink knew in that moment that Mary was a lot like Hogan. If Hogan wanted to learn or do anything he could. That was one of the things that Klink admired about his senior POW officer.

"But what should I call you?" Mary's voice brought Klink out of his thoughts.

"What?" He asked her.

"What should I call you? Should I call you Herr Kommandant, Herr Oberst, or can I call you Wilhelm?" Mary asked him. Klink smiled at her.

"You can call me Wilhelm, but when someone outside of the camp is here you can call me Kommandant." He told her with a smile.

"Okay, but I kind of like saying the Oberst though." Mary said with a giggle.

"That's fine." Klink smiled at her but then looked at Hogan as he spoke up.

"Wait, why can't I call you Wilhelm?" Klink rolled his eyes at the younger man. There was a lot of times Hogan acted more of a young child than a adult.

"Because we are both in the military." Klink said dryly. He watched as Hogan made a little pouting face.

"Fine, but what about when we are here? I mean I am going to be moving in here." Hogan had stopped pouting and was now looking at the man with a smile and mischief in his eyes. Klink knew that look all to well. Hogan had him in a verbal trap. He sighed and lowered his head as he spoke.

"Well I guess we can drop the last names here." Mary watched as her father smile a victory smile at the verbal win. She smiled and shook her head. She had almost forgotten that her father was like a child at heart. Then she let out a yawn that seem to come out of no where. Both Klink and Hogan looked at her and then they both realized that she was very tired. Hogan looked closer at his daughter. She was having a hard time keeping her eyes open.

"We should go to bed." Hogan said this looking over at Klink.

"Yes I think we should. I'll show you to the guest room." Hogan put his arm around Mary's shoulder. She looked up at him and smiled. They walked her to the guest room. Once inside of the room Mary looked around and saw that it was a nice size. She looked at her father who leaned down and kissed her on the head. He smiled at her and was about to walk out of the room when Mary grabbed his arm. Hogan turned and looked at his daughter with an odd look.

"Could you sleep in here tonight?" She asked him. Hogan smiled and nodded his head.

Klink wished them both a good night. He was shocked again when Mary told him good night in German. He had only smiled and shut the door. Mary got into bed and laid down. Hogan moved and laid down in the bed with her. A smile came to his face when Mary moved closer to him. Hogan hugged his daughter up and soon they were both asleep.

The next morning Mary woke up in her father's arms. She smiled to herself as she watched him sleep. She turned her head and looked at the door as it opened. She tensed up but relaxed when she saw that it was Klink who opened the door. He moved over toward father and daughter. Klink saw that Mary was awake and smiled at her. He then looked at Hogan. He moved his hand over and placed it on Hogan's shoulder. He shook Hogan a little to wake him. Hogan made a noise as he did so.

"Robert, it is almost time for roll call." He told him.

"No." Was all Mary and Klink heard him say. Mary saw Klink narrow his eyes at Hogan. Klink looked over at Mary.

"Your father is stubborn as a mule." Mary giggled at this. She had remembered that everyone at the base had always saying something like that. Mary moved and shook her father.

"Papa, we have to get up. You have to introduce me to Newkirk." Mary told him. Hogan opened his eyes at the sound of her voice. He looked at his daughter with shocked eyes. He laid there and stared at her for awhile. Then he realized that Mary and Klink were looking at him with odd looks on their faces. He closed his eyes and remembered everything that had happened last night.

"Oh yeah I do." He said rubbing his face with his hand.

"Why were you staring at me?" Mary asked him. Hogan let his hand fall and looked at her with a loving look.

"Because I thought I was dreaming about finally seeing my little girl." Mary smiled as she heard this. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.

Peter Newkirk was laying in his bunk looking up at the ceiling. He had only slept for an hour after Colonel Hogan had left. He had decided to get up a hour before roll call to get dressed. He was now laying there thinking back on when a woman by the name of Berlin Betty who had came to the camp five months ago. She had asked over her radio show for a POW to tell their country men to quit the war. Their radio down in the tunnel had gotten damaged. So this was good timing for them. They had to get a message out to London. Colonel Hogan had come up with a plan that one of them would tell Klink that they wanted to go on the show. Once on the show they would say a coded message and London would understand. Newkirk had told Colonel Hogan that he would do it, but when he had saw Betty he had fallen for her. He knew that he was bad for falling in love or what he hoped was love so quickly. He had always had fell fast and hard, but Betty had played with his mind and heart. He was about to not send the message, but did it anyway. After the broadcast was done he was hoping that Betty would tell him that she had fell for him, but it was not to be. She had used him and didn't care about him what so ever.

Newkirk had told his friend LeBeau later that night that he was done with love. That it was something that he would never be bless to have. LeBeau had told him that when the right girl came along that he would know it. She would be beautiful and once he saw her. He would not be able to breathe and his heart would beat faster but yet skip a beat. Newkirk had told him that it would never happen to him. He was done with getting his heart broken.

"Roll Call!" Came from the door of the barracks. Newkirk sighed to himself and moved off his bunk. He sat there for a minute letting everyone else go by him.

"Newkirk you alright?" He heard Schultz ask him. Newkirk jumped down from his bunk and looked at Schultz with a sadden look.

"Yeah Schultz, I'm alright." He lied to the man as he walked pass him. Schultz knew that the young man was lying to him.

Newkirk was the last one out of the barracks. He didn't look up when Schultz started to count them. He knew that once the count was done that they could go back in. Schultz walked passed him and then stood beside him. He could hear Klink and two others walking towards them. He heard Klink ask for the report but in a different way than usual. After Schultz gave the report he waited to hear that they were all dismiss. When it didn't come he looked over at LeBeau to see if he had miss something. When he looked at LeBeau; he saw that he was staring ahead with his mouth open. Newkirk gave him a look. He was about to ask what was wrong when he heard his commanding officer speak.

"Everyone I would like to introduce you to my daughter Mary." This made Newkirk look ahead now. Newkirk found himself looking into a pear of palest blue eyes that were almost white. He looked at the young woman who was looking at him and smiling wide at him. Newkirk felt himself stop breathing. He felt like his heart had skipped a beat, but yet was beating faster. She was the most gorgeous woman that he had and will ever see.

"She's gorgeous." He whispered to himself.

Mary had walked across the ground of the camp; she had felt all eyes on her. She was uneasy on how some of the POW's were looking at her. She followed her father and Klink to in front of Barracks 2. She stood beside her father and looked at him when he spoke to her.

"Newkirk is the one in the blue RAF uniform." He told her. Mary looked over as Klink asked for the report. She saw him looking down at the ground. She could see that he was frowning. Hogan saw this and leaned over to Mary and whispered to her.

"He is going threw a bit of a heartache. A woman he had fell for broke his heart bad." Mary looked at her father and then back at the handsome young man. Then her father step forward and was about to addressed the POW's. As her father did this, Mary decided that she would try to get his mind off of his pain for a time being. She smiled to herself when she saw him looked over to the smaller man to his left. He saw that his friend was looking ahead. After her father had told the POW's that she was his daughter; the handsome young man looked at her. Mary felt herself stop breathing, her heart skip a beat, but yet go faster at the same time. She looked into his electric blue eyes and her smile grew wider.

"He's gorgeous." She whispered to herself.
