"I was very taken back," Erza admitted late, late in the night after the battle was won and the celebration party had finally begun to wind down…several days after it had first started, "at the striking resemblance between you and Anna Heartfilla. After all I've seen your family portrait and you're the living image of your mother. Not your father."
"Oh," Lucy blinked, "yeah. I can see why that would confuse you. You see my father took my mother's name not the other way round when they married."
"Really?" Erza leaned in with interest. "That is incredibly unusual. Was there a reason to it?"
Lucy shrugged. "It was never really explained to me properly," she confessed sheepishly, "I always assumed it was something to do with the keys. As you know by now celestial magic runs in the family, the keys are handed from mother to daughter."
Erza nodded understandingly.
"And then," Lucy continued, "When I got older I believed it had something to do with the family estate. I think it actually belonged to my mother and there was some sort of entail that meant it had to stay in the family name. Now though," she said thoughtfully, "I think it might be just so Zeref could find us when he needed us to open the Eclipse Gate."
"Hmmm…" Erza hummed disapprovingly, "that does take the shine of it all away. Still," she smiled, "your father must have loved your mother very much to give up on his own family name. I understand men have their masculine pride and would usually prefer it if their children take their surname."
"Tell me about it!" Lucy burst out. "That was one of the reasons why Father had such a difficult time to find me a groom, you know, other than the fact that I didn't want one and ran away. All of these rich, noble, families didn't want their family lines to die out under the Heartfilla name. And then so many of the boys were such….boys, they whinged about how unmanly it was to take their wife's name rather than keep their own."
"Well I think that's very stupid," Natsu declared loudly. Lucy jumped in surprise and was unable to repress a yelp of shock from escaping her lips as Natsu suddenly slung an arm round her shoulder. His heat practically scalded her as he pressed against her back and rested his chin on the top of her head. "A name doesn't make you manly," he snorted, "what's in a name? You're still you. You shouldn't let those stupid guys get to ya, Luce, they're not worth it if they can't see you're worth it. After all," he grinned down at her proudly and Lucy was unable to keep herself from blushing, "I wouldn't mind being Mrs Heartfilla for you."
"Pfft!" Gray snorted from aside where he had been blatantly eavesdropping. "Natsu, you idiot!" he choked out between sniggers.
"Gihihihihihihihihihihihihihi," Gajeel snickered beside Gray, "I knew there was a reason why you wore Bunny Girl's dresses, Salamander."
"What?" Natsu asked unbothered. "I'm not insecure about my masculinity like you two." Gray and Gajeel immediately stopped laughing at that. "And I think I would make a perfectly good Mrs Heartfilla," Natsu puffed his chest out proudly unaware of Lucy's bright pink face rapidly turning red in embarrassment, "I already keep a house-"
"Barely," Gray muttered darkly, "and I'm pretty sure calling that pig sty a house is the world's biggest exaggeration ever."
"I can cook," Natsu carried on cheerfully as he ignored Gray, "I'm good with kids, I get on with almost all of Lucy's spirits, and I can beat the crap out of anyone that so much looks at her funny. Why would I let changing my surname stop me from doing that for Lucy?" he grinned teasingly down at Lucy as she squirmed in humiliation. "All I ask in return is a diamond ring and, because Mira said so, it has to be princess cut. Whatever that means."
Several people face palmed at that while others turned round to raise an eyebrow in Mira's direction as the white haired barmaid smiled sheepishly in reply.
"NATSU YOU MORON!" Lucy exploded. Her face was as scarlet as Erza's hair with embarrassment. "Shut up!" she hissed. "First, you're a guy so you wouldn't be Mrs Heartfilla you would be a Mr and secondly did it ever occur to you that I don't want to follow that family tradition anymore, that I ran away from that for a reason, and that I would much rather be Mrs Dragneel?!"
Everyone's eyes bugged out at that and it takes Lucy a couple seconds (and Mira to squeal in delight) to realise what exactly she said before she suddenly folded into herself in even more embarrassment.
"Jeeze Luce," Natsu grinned, "there's no need to get your panties in a twist. If you wanted to be Mrs Dragneel you just had to ask." He took her hand and dragged her away towards the job request board that had somehow managed to escape the battle wholly intact (though a lot of the jobs had blown away in the wind). "You're such a weirdo, Lucy," he carried on cheerfully, "let's get a job, you still have rent to pay."
"…."
"…."
"…."
"…."

"…..did…did Lucy just propose to Natsu?" Cana asked hesitatingly. "And did he just accept?!"
"Aye!" Happy chirped smugly. "They liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike each other!"
"YES!" Mira yelled. Her eyes were sparkling in utter delight as she pumped her fists into the air. "Finally! At last! One of my OTPs are together! She shouted ecstatically as she clapped her hands together. "And now I have a wedding to plan!"
The rest of the guild gulped audibly….
…they had a strong suspicion that fighting Zeref and his army was a piece of cake compared to enduring Mira in a wedding planning frenzy.
