Gray gathered all of his courage and strength to do the dangerously terrifying quest at hand….
….he had to tell Juvia, loud and clear, that he could not be with her before she started planning their wedding for the seven thousandth time.
They had left the guild together with the intention to train so that Gray could finally kill END and avenge his father. Unfortunately the cold, practical, plan of training until they drop from exhaustion somehow turned into a romantic proposal of elopement in Juvia's mind.
(Gray really doesn't know how her mind makes these leaps.)
"Listen, Juvia," he said quietly, "you know I cannot be in a relationship with you, right? I have a mission in life, a dangerous mission, a mission that could get me killed, it would be unfair to you if I started something when my attention is always going to be elsewhere. I have to be one hundred and fifty per cent focused on this mission. Nothing else. No one else."
He held his breath as he waited for a reaction.
He had half thought that Juvia might burst into maniacal tears and flood the nearby area or lose her temper completely and attempt to murder him or even just smile radiantly and pretend he hadn't said anything at al.
(She has done the last one a hundred times before.)
So when she slowly reached out and took his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, Gray was very taken back.
"Don't worry Gray-sama," Juvia said softly with a sad smile, "Juvia understands."
"You do?!"
"Oh yes," Juvia said serenely, "Juvia's mother always told Juvia that men can't multi-task. So Juvia can wait until Gray-sama finishes the task on hand before he focuses on his and Juvia's relationship."
Gray face plants on the floor.
