Zeref was very self-conscious about the pretty blonde sitting on his bed cross-legged with a history textbook in front of her. He was almost fourteen years old and had become increasingly aware of girls, or rather one girl in particular.

Mavis Vermillion was the prettiest, most whimsical, and fascinating girl Zeref had ever met and he so desperately wanted to make a good impression.

Unfortunately his usual timidity and quietness has hastily evolved into crippling shyness whenever she was near him and their study session has quickly turned into a never-ending awkward silence that weighed upon them as they stared down at their own books.

It didn't help that Zeref was extra embarrassed by the fact he actually shares a bedroom with his seven year old brother who is the laziest, messiest, child ever to come in existence. Half of his bedroom had toys scattered on the floor and other odd bits and bobs that Zeref really didn't want to identify.

Mavis had hurt her foot earlier when she accidentally stepped on one of Natsu's Legos. The boy in question had been unapologetic and had had to be chased out when he had to been bothering them with annoying questions.

Speaking of which…

BANG!

Zeref and Mavis simultaneously jumped as the bedroom door slammed open to reveal a deceptively innocent looking Natsu standing in the doorway. His hair was a little damp and there was a slight toothpaste moustache round his lips and he wore dragon pyjamas as he indignantly placed his hands on his hips.

"All right," he said bossily, "it's my bedtime now!"

"Sorry about this," Igneel smiled apologetically to Mavis, "if you and Zeref still need to study our kitchen is still available."

"Thank you," Mavis smiled warmly, "but I think I'll be going soon."

Natsu scrambled into his bed and smiled smugly at Zeref who replied with an eye roll. Little brothers were such nuisances.

"All right kiddo," Igneel said as he gently pushed Natsu by the shoulders to get him to lay down, "it's time to sleep," he pulled Natsu's duvet up to his chin, "night, night, don't let the bed bugs bite."

He then pressed a kiss on Natsu's forehead.

"And Iggy," Igneel pulled out Natsu's favourite stuffed toy, "says to sleep tight."

Igneel made the dragon toy also kiss Natsu.

Natsu wiggled happily in reply as Igneel tucked the toy beside him.

"And Happy would kiss you goodnight too but he has run off to go fishing."

Zeref rolled his eyes at that. The family cat was more likely out doing cat stuff like hunting rats and fighting other cats rather than actually going to the nearest river (many towns away) to do actual fishing.

"That's all right," Natsu yawned, "Happy doesn't like bedtimes. He much rather go out and play." Natsu pouted at that. "I would much rather go out and play."

"You can go out and play when the sun is up," Igneel said firmly and Zeref barely repressed a whimper at that. Now Natsu was going to jump up and down on his bed at sunrise to get him out to play. "Now though you are going to sleep."

Mavis' jade green eyes twinkled in amusement at this. "Does this happen every night?" she asked.

Zeref felt his cheeks burn in embarrassment at that. "…yes," he mumbled reluctantly.

"Zeref!" Natsu called out impatiently. "I'm waiting!"

Zeref stiffened at that as he quickly remembered his usually nightly ritual and suddenly wished the ground could open up and swallow him whole. He had really hoped that Natsu would conveniently forget this one time.

Or be more like a normal seven year old boy and not want anyone to see him receive affection from his family.

Who was he kidding?

Since when did Natsu ever felt any shame?

Still, Zeref tried to feign ignorance. "What for?" he said dumbly.

Natsu, however, was not going to let him escape. "My goodnight kiss!" he hissed crossly.

Zeref was definitely sure his face was red as a tomato as his cheeks now felt like they were on fire. "Erm," he tried to sound cool (but was totally failing), "since when have I ever kissed you goodnight?"

Natsu sat up with an unimpressed stare. "Are you new or something?" he said scathingly. "Oh my God did aliens kidnap you and replace you with a robot?!"

Zeref stared blankly at that wondering (not or the first time) what on earth goes on in his little brother's head.

"Zeref," Igneel sighed, "just kiss your brother so he'll go to sleep already."

Zeref sighed heavily, a dark pink tinge in his cheeks highlighted his embarrassment, as he reluctantly crossed the bedroom to stand by Natsu's bed. The small pink-haired boy stared up at him demandingly as he crossed his arms impatiently.

Zeref hastily ducked down and pecked Natsu's cheek. "Goodnight!" he blurted out.

Natsu grinned back cheekily, "night, night, you big weirdo!" he replied chirpily before he rolled over and closed his eyes.

Zeref spluttered indignantly at that as he was herded out of the bedroom by Igneel. He was greeted by an impish smile on Mavis' face and instantly flushed in embarrassment all over again.

"I, erm, sorry," he muttered self-consciously, "that you had to witness that."

"Don't be," Mavis replied softly, "it was super-cute. You're a good brother and that's something you should be proud of."

And with that she pressed a light kiss on his cheek that caused fireworks to explode beneath his skin.

He would have to endeavour to be a good brother all the time if he got rewards like that.
