Lucy stared at her phone in disbelief.
Future Husband, her new contact read as.
Future Husband...
….Future Husband...
FUTURE HUSBAND!
Earlier today Lucy had to go to the dentist and due to the nature of that visit, she had to be heavily sedated (Wisdom teeth sucked, seriously. Why do humans have them?). She honest to God cannot remember what happened in the lead up to that dentist appointment and absolutely nothing afterwards. The last thing she remembered was leaving work and asking someone to pick her up, and then the next thing she knew she was face down in her own bed, drool all over her chin, and her shoes carefully tucked away at the end of her bed.
There was a huge black hole where majority of her day had been and apparently somewhere in the middle of that she had met the man she wanted to marry.
How the hell did that happen?!
Who on earth was it? What sort of person had attracted Lucy when she was completely out of her mind on drugs and couldn't tell her up from her down? Either this was something out of a romantic comedy dream come true or a horror film nightmare...
Lucy bit her lip anxiously.
Should she risk humiliation or being stalked by a psychopath by ringing the phone number?
She was insanely curious about the gap in her memory and who this apparently perfect human being (or crazy stalker) who got her to save their number as Future Husband. It is all she can think about from the moment she groggily scrolled through her missed calls and saw the name.
Future Husband...
...Who was he? Was he handsome, clever, and kind? Was he the guy that literally stepped out of her fantasies, the quiet but sexy bookworm who will treat her like the lady she is? Or was he some normal bloke she embarrassed herself in front of and insisted on taking his number and he was out there somewhere praying she wasn't going to call him? Or was her worse fears true and he was an insidious predator and she should probably check that she still has her panties on?
(She did check, they were still on and she didn't feel sore, so she thinks it's safe to assume her worse fears are simply just that; fears.)
The unknown became too much to bear and before she could chicken out Lucy slammed her thumb down to call the number...
….a phone rang out in her living room.
Lucy shrieked and threw her phone across the bed and wildly looked round her room for a potential weapon.
(Her high heels might make an effective stake or maybe she should use one of her hardback books. Gajeel did once say that the sharp edges of her latest hardback romance would make a deadly weapon...)
The phone stopped ringing and there were heavy footsteps heading towards her bedroom, Lucy barely had time to grab hold of her latest book before her bedroom door creaked open.
"Lucy, you weirdo," Natsu grinned, "Why are you trying to phone me when I'm just in the next room?"
"Future husband?!" Lucy squeaked, her face burning with embarrassment.
"Aw jeeze, you're still high?" Natsu complained. "I'm putting my foot down, I'm not purring for you no matter how many times you try to touch me."
Lucy spluttered incoherently as she wished desperately the ground would open up and swallow her whole. She never admitted it – out loud to anyone other than Levy-chan – but she's always been deeply attracted to Natsu and had more than once fantasised making him so satisfied he would purr like a cat (look, it was a fantasy. It didn't have to be realistic). Unfortunately it turns out when she's too drunk to remember the night she demands that Natsu should purr for her...
...and now it turns out she does that when she's recovering from dental surgery.
Someone please kill her now!
"Come on, you weirdo," Natsu said kindly but firmly, "back into bed and I'll heat you up some soup. Mira sent it over when she heard you were getting your tooth pulled out today, which is great, because I can only cook solid food, as in meat, and I don't think you're up for chewing just yet."
Lucy blinked dumbly as she allowed Natsu to herd her back into bed and tuck her in. He was actually smoothing her duvet over her and making sure she was properly covered before he patted her head gently.
"She's made several different ones for the next few days," Natsu continued on oblivious to Lucy's outright gawking, "and I've asked her for some yogurts as well, so that's breakfast sorted too. You get some more sleep now. I've left some water on your bedside, hopefully that will help you flush out the meds from your system. If you need anything else at all just give us a shout, I'll be crashing on your sofa tonight just in case."
He then gave her one last radiant grin before gently shutting her bedroom door to leave her to rest.
"...future husband," Lucy murmured to herself.
Natsu had just taken care of her when she was sick – being drugged up was a kind of sick! - and he clearly loved and cherished her despite her being an embarrassing wreck of a human being demanding him to purr for her...
...Her drugged up self had totally been right, Natsu was very much future husband material.
Future husband indeed.
