"Gakuto-San?" Kagome called curiously as she stared out her window from where she was cooking dinner. Sitting at her table doing his school work was Mukahi, her neighbor, while his younger siblings were both upstairs playing in her brothers' room. This was a normal Sunday in her house, and she greatly enjoyed it. Not all Sundays had the eldest there though, as most of the time he was practicing with his 'Ore-Sama' who she'd had the joy of meeting once before.
"Hmn?" He didn't look up from his assignment, unlike Kagome, his were all due on Monday, she could turn hers in any day of the week since she was homeschooled.
"A couple days ago...well, actually, Thursday, after you came and picked up Taki-Kun...I saw a butterfly."
He glanced up at her curiously, and stared at her expectantly as he added, "...fascinating..." though his sarcasm was quite noticeable.
"Well...I followed it."
"Where to?" He placed his pencil down and gave Kagome his undivided attention, growing curious about her 'Butterfly Tale'.
Kagome placed the glass lid over the pot and watched it fog up immediately before turning the nob of the stove on simmer and watching the fire die down a bit. Then she turned and sat down across from Mukahi who was still watching her, "I followed it to a tennis court...and I met a boy...our age..."
"Oh?! What's his name, I might know him!" He grinned, "And I've probably beaten him a time or two as well."
Smiling, Kagome shook her head.
"You're not gonna tell me his name?"
Again, she shook her head, "I didn't get it...I...didn't even talk to him. I just saw him, he picked up the Butterfly; it had landed on the tennis ball he was using."
"Your serious? Well...did you see his uniform?"
She nodded, standing and grabbing the wooden spoon to stir the food in the pot, "Blue and white...and...he had shoulder length brown hair, I couldn't see his eyes, he kept them closed, but he still seemed to see me, and even bowed to me."
Mukahi stared at her agape, wide eyes looking shocked, and honestly a little bit mortified. "F-Fuji-San!?"
"Is that his name? Fuji-San...?"
He stammered, then shook his head, whipping his red hair dangerously around his face, "Don't get involved with him Higurashi-San,"
Frowning, Kagome turned and faced her friend, "Why not? Is he bad news or something?"
Mukahi puffed his cheeks out, "n-no...I just don't like the idea of you dating a Seigaku Regular!"
"Oh, but it's okay if I date your Captain?" She laughed at his flushed cheeks, recalling the meeting between his Captain and Kagome.
Mukahi closed his eyes as he tried to get the heat in his cheeks under control. It was horribly embarrassing, as Keigo had been more than obvious for his attraction towards Kagome, and had even demanded that he break up with her. Hell...he wasn't even dating her. But Kagome had saved him from having to reply when she came up and hugged him, then glared at Keigo before telling him that while she wasn't 'Gakuto-Sans Girlfriend' she was his 'friend' and she wouldn't date anyone who dared to talk to him in such a way. "Why did you follow the darn thing anyways?!"
Kagome shrugged, pulling out four plates and silverware to go with it as she set her table. "It's hard to explain, but...I felt like...I knew that butterfly."
The look he gave her...Mukahi couldn't imagine what it looked like, but by the way she was stifling a laugh, he imagined it was funny. He shook his head and sighed, "...you felt like you knew the butterfly...like...how?"
He really was a good listener. Kagome continued placing food on the plates, pieces of bread and hard boiled eggs out in a bowl in front of them, with salt and pepper next to the bowl. "It felt like...Miroku..."
"...Miroku...I know that name. You've mentioned it before, haven't you?"
Kagome nodded, "He was one of my friends...from my old home. He was killed...by a demon, no...a monster." Tears swelled in her eyes as she brought her fingers up to stop them. "He wasn't the only one though, this monster, killed many of my friends, until someone finally got rid of him...he tried to kill me too."
Mukahi seemed unsure of what to say, but he did stand and wrap his arms around her shaking shoulders, "I'm sorry. I remember now...you mentioned your dear friends dying, I remember you telling me about them, and vaguely I recalled them as stories you told me and Taki...that's what I thought they were."
"...I wanted you to think they were...I find it to be more fun talking about them in ways that make the people around me smile..."
"Well..." Mukahi frowned and pulled away, looking in thought, he took her hand as he leaned against the table behind him, "if it's that kind of a feeling, if it's Miroku...he can't be leading you anywhere bad...so, I guess, you should trust your friends. They seem to have come to you, to show you something, right?"
Nodding, she looked a little lost, "But what could he want to show me..."
"I thought it seemed pretty obvious, maybe they want you to find happiness. In the story you told me, you said the traveling school girl fell in love with the demon half ling Inuyasha, but when he died, she closed her heart off to the world...the girl was you, and the boy was one of the friends that your killer got, wasn't he?"
It hurt hearing it in such a way, but while Mukahi had pieced together the fact that she truly had known the people in her 'tall tales' he hadn't realized that she hadn't fabricated the stories by saying they were demons or slayers. Kagome nodded, "yeah..."
"Maybe...maybe I'm just reading too much into it, or thinking too much about it, but I think they want you to find love, and be happy. They seemed like good friends...trust them to guide you."
"AH! NII-SAN! LET GO OF NEE-CHAN! YOU'LL GIVE HER COOTIES!"
Both fifteen year olds turned with different reactions, Kagome was laughing at Mukahi's widened eyes. Mukahi dropped her hand and chased his brother up the stairs and down the hall, a cry and yelp notified Kagome that the little one had been caught. "DINNER IS READY~!" Kagome called, sitting down as they all ran down to join her. She thought over Mukahi's words and smiled. 'Maybe he's right...'
