The Test

Andy was jolted awake when Lu stepped over her outstretched legs on her way to the bathroom. She could see through the window that it was still dark outside and wondered what time it was. She yawned as she pondered what to do. It hadn't felt right to leave with Lu crying and she wasn't sure how long she had sat on the floor outside her bedroom before dozing off.

''Just go home,'' Lu muttered on her way back to her bedroom. Her eyes were still puffy and she was still upset although her anger had somewhat subsided due to her exhaustion. She had watched the minutes tick away on her alarm clock as she struggled to fall asleep.

She was desperate to resolve this problem with Andy but knew there was no easy way to fix it. What had happened with Nick was just a symptom of a deeper problem; a problem that wouldn't be solved by a 5-minute fight.

Lu had left the door ajar and Andy got up and leaned in the doorway, watching Lu as she slipped back between the covers, ''I'm not leaving here until we talk about this,'' she said. Her parents had always taught her that you should never go to bed angry and—even though her marriage to Les had taught her that getting a good night's sleep went a long way in resolving arguments—she knew that if she left now their relationship would never truly be the same again.

Lu groaned. ''Andy, we have to get up in three hours, I'm not in the mood for this,'' she said as she turned over, facing away from Andy. She knew that Andy wasn't going to let this go easily, ''We'll talk about this tomorrow.''

It had been a few weeks and just as Andy had suspected things hadn't been fully resolved yet, not even close. At the end of the day, all it came down to was that Lu was in no way on equal footing with Milo and Andy didn't have a way to fix that. There had been questions from both her daughters as well as Milo, asking what was going on, and she knew that Lu had talked to Lana about some of it.

She had reached the point where she was considering breaking off her engagement to Milo just to show how serious she was about it as that seemed to be the only thing that could make that clear. Of course, that had been the moment that two lines had appeared on her pregnancy test.

They had been trying and she had already had dreams about their future child, she had hoped to get pregnant and been disappointed when test after test came back negative. Right at the moment that she didn't want to get pregnant, when she wanted to first figure out how to configure both relationships, that was when it had finally taken. Just as expected once they finally put in some effort it hadn't taken long.

Milo lifted his head from the pillow when Andy came back in from the bathroom. He raised his eyebrows in a questioning manner, trying to downplay his nervousness with a smile, ''So?'' He stood up from the bed, too anxious to see for himself what the test said.

Andy gave him a quick smile, ''Positive,'' she said as she handed him the test. She knew that making Milo think she was anything less than thrilled about this news would be sending him the wrong message, would just cause an argument. He wasn't entirely in on what had been going in her relationship with Lu but he had, of course, noticed something was up—it wasn't exactly easy to hide.

''Oh my god…'' Milo looked down at the test in amazement, in disbelief that this wish had finally come true. He tried to ignore the look on Andy's face as he hugged her, squeezing her tightly as he tried to process this news. He was going to be a father. Finally. He had always known deep down that he wanted to be a father one day, he had had to let that go when Tookie didn't want kids and for a long time it didn't look like it was going to happen with Andy either, but now… He wasn't sure what to say. He blinked the tears that had welled up in his eyes away, the look on Andy's face had a very sobering effect. He knew that for Andy it was somewhat of a difficult time for this to happen—even if she wouldn't talk about what was going on—but couldn't help that his happiness showed on his face. He massaged her shoulder with one hand as he stared at the test, ''This is a good thing,'' he told her, trying to convince her, but it was more so filling with him doubt than comforting her, ''Right?''

Andy looked back at him, smiling a bit wider now though it didn't reach her eyes, ''Right.''

He took a deep breath as he looked down at the test, finding it difficult to look away from the two bright as day lines on it, ''Did you tell Lu you were going to-''

Andy shook her head before he could even finish his question, ''No.'' She had been taking her time to resolve what had been going on but she knew that now that a baby was being thrown into the mix they had to agree on how to move forward if there even was a way to move forward after what had gone down. She sat back down on the bed, burying her face in her hands.

''When are you going to tell her?'' He asked as he sat down next to her, his hand softly rubbing her arm. When she didn't respond he looked away, ''Andy, you have to talk to her sometime.''

It just reminded her of how much they had been avoiding each other, neither of them even knowing what to say one another. She could feel tears in her eyes, ''I know, I know,'' she said, ''I just-'' She didn't know what to say. His arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her close, her head lying down on his shoulder. She breathed in his scent and wiped her tears on his shirt, ''I'll talk to her soon,'' she said as she got up, throwing the test in the trash can.

''Maybe you should hold off on that for a little while,'' Milo said, ''I mean, telling her about the baby.''

Andy turned to him with a frown. Even despite everything she still felt that Lu had a right to know about it, especially since that would most likely influence how she wanted to move forward in their relationship. ''What makes you say that?''

''Tell me something, did you tell her we were trying for a baby?'' Milo asked as he cocked his head.

Andy hesitated; she had regretted not saying anything. ''No.''

Milo took this in with a deep breath. ''Andy, I know she's important to you and you want your relationship to work out, but if things remain like this…''

''What are you saying?''

Milo chose his words carefully, ''You've said it yourself that it's important to make sure that there's stability when you bring a child into the world,'' he said, ''If your relationship keeps being this shaky then wouldn't it be better not to have her around… like that, as your… girlfriend.''

Andy squared her shoulders and crossed her arms, ''Do you not want her around?''

''I didn't say that,'' Milo responded quickly, ''It's just that if she's going to be in my child's life, in our child's life… then I think you need to be sure that you're both in this for the long haul; maybe include her when we're talking about plans for the future.''

Andy frowned, ''I include her.''

''You just said you didn't tell her we were trying for a baby,'' Milo backfired. He could tell on her face that she wasn't too pleased with him right now.

''It's rather hard to do that when I need to make sure you're okay with her constantly,'' Andy said, thinking back to what she had told Lu about Milo being hot and cold. ''One minute you're asking me why I don't ask her to move in and the next minute you sound like you don't want her around at all.''

Milo softened his voice somewhat, ''I thought I made it clear that I don't want to play a part in your relationship like that,'' he said, ''You do what you want to do with her, you two decide that, and the two of us decide what we do in our relationship.''

Andy swallowed hard, ''Are you only okay with us being together because I let you be there when we have sex?'' It had plagued her since Lu had brought it up and she just had to ask.

Milo's jaw dropped and he took a moment to recover, ''Come here,'' he said. When Andy didn't move he sighed, ''Come here,'' he repeated, patting the bed next to him. When she sat down, still looking a bit defensive, he finally spoke. ''Look, I'm not gonna lie, I do enjoy that,'' he said, ignoring her rolling her eyes, ''But that's not why. I can see that she makes you happy, I saw that before even that first time in your office,'' he looked down his hands, ''There's something so natural in the way you two are around each other, like you're supposed to be together.''

''And you're okay with that?'' Andy asked.

''As long as you're happy, yeah I am.''

Andy softly knocked on Lu's open office door. It was after hours, the lights in Lu's office being the only ones still on. She could see Lu look up from the files on her desk, looking pretty tired. ''May I come in?'' She asked, already stepping inside, albeit slowly.

Lu shrugged, ''Sure.'' At this time of the day she didn't have the energy to argue. Still, it was strange that Andy had come to her; Lu hadn't expected her to, ''What's up?''

Andy decided to just come right out and say it, ''I'm pregnant.'' She couldn't take her eyes off Lu. Not just because they were in relatively close proximity for the first time in what felt like forever, but also because she was dying to know what Lu thought about this news. Her face didn't give too much away though.

For a second Lu felt like she couldn't breathe. She looked away, giving a resigned nod, ''Okay. That's that then,'' she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Andy frowned; she had only barely been able to hear what Lu had said, ''What's what?''

Lu tried to hide her emotions but knew that Andy would see right through her. She shrugged, trying to keep up a façade of indifference, ''Come on, who are we kidding? Really? It was a long shot for our relationship to even survive, and after what went down a few weeks ago,'' she had already long gotten over what Andy and Nick had done, but for how Andy had treated her… that was a different story.

''Are you saying you want to break up?'' Andy asked, even despite everything still surprised.

Lu thought it was rather obvious, ''I remember what you said, okay?'' She said, getting cut off by Andy before she could continue.

''What did I say?''

''That you didn't want to have a baby with Milo as long as we were together,'' Lu said. It had been months since it had been brought up, but the words were still edged in her brain, instinctually knowing that sooner or later it would come up. ''We've been avoiding each other for weeks and now that you're pregnant there's no reason for us to even try to fix it anymore.''

''Lu, that was months ago,'' Andy said. She barely even remembered that conversation, and now felt even worse for not discussing this with Lu earlier. She could see Lu shrug, obviously not getting the point, ''I can't change my mind?''

''Did you?'' Lu asked, ''We're a mess and-''

''And that's my fault,'' Andy said, plain and simple. ''I shouldn't have done what I did with Nick, and I should have worked harder to show you that I love you and want to be with you because I do. No matter what Milo or anyone else thinks.'' She reached across Lu's desk for her hand, wanting more than anything to be close with her. Andy tried not to let it sting that it only caused Lu to lean back farther into her chair, ''I should've included you in talks about our future, with Milo as well; about us getting married, him moving in, having a baby…''

''You asked for my blessing for you two getting married-''

''After I said yes.''

''Still, I was more than fine with it,'' Lu said, not having any trouble with that. ''You could've given me a heads up about Milo moving in but it was only a matter of time after you two got engaged. And even despite you not being exactly careful about trying to avoid this, it wasn't like you planned to get pregnant,'' Lu said, feeling like it was a non-issue. It didn't weigh as heavily on her as the other stuff did. She could see the look on Andy's face change and got a knot in the pit of her stomach, ''You didn't plan for this, did you?''

Andy looked down at her hands. ''We've been trying for a few months,'' she said, looking up and back at Lu, knowing that she needed to be honest and face the consequences no matter what they might be. She could see the pain on Lu's face and hated herself for causing it, ''Lu, I'm sorry. I didn't think it would happen this fast, I thought I had more time to tell you.''

Lu shook her head, not wanting to hear it, too tired of it. She blamed herself; with how Andy had been in the past she should've known better. ''You should've told me before you even started trying,'' she said, tears in her eyes, unable to hide them anymore. ''You didn't even have to ask me if I was okay with it, you just had to let me know. Given me a heads up that you've been talking about it, all it would've taken was a quick hey, we're fucking with a purpose now and that would've been enough.''

Andy ignored Lu's crude words. ''You're right I should've told you,'' she said, she couldn't refute that. Lu had her face buried in her hands, her elbows resting on her desk. ''But I'm telling you now, and I'm telling you that I love you, and I want to be with you… I want you in my life, and I want you to be in this child's life.'' Her hand was resting on her belly as she waited for Lu's reaction, feeling her insides sink farther with every passing second.

Lu pushed her hair away from her face and looked up at the ceiling, blinking fast to get rid of the tears. Her sleeves gripped in her tight fists as she dabbed away her already fallen tears with her wrist. She finally looked back at Andy, trying to make up her mind on what to say, knowing that this wasn't going to be easy. ''You make it really difficult for me to love you sometimes-''

''I'm sorry,'' Andy said, on the one hand she wanted to know what Lu was going to say but on the other hand she could feel where this was going and she could feel her heartbreaking.

Lu's first instinct was to say that it was okay but she stopped herself before she could, knowing that she would only be saying it to make Andy feel better because of the pain radiating from her face, not because she meant it. She decided to just let it lie. ''Andy, I do love you, but this isn't working.'' She took a deep breath, ''I think that maybe we should take some time apart to figure out where this is going and what we both want, whether that means more commitment or breaking up…''

Andy felt it was time to cut in, ''I told Milo that I want to be with you no matter what he thinks about it, the baby doesn't change that. I want to commit to you.''

Lu had wanted Andy to say that to Milo all this time but felt that it didn't matter as much in this particular moment, she swallowed hard knowing that she had to be truthful, ''I'm not sure I want that with you anymore,'' she said quietly.

Andy bit her lip to hold back her tears. She could see that Lu was struggling with this as much as she was and wanted to comfort her but knew that wasn't the right move, not right now.

''Being with you has been great at times but now it just hurts. I told you that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life playing second fiddle to Milo before we even got together and all this time that's all I've been. I need some time away from you to figure out if there's a way in which we can be together, before the baby is here.''

Andy resigned herself; she gave Lu a quick nod and stood up, needing some room to breathe. She felt like she couldn't breathe and knew it wouldn't be fair to Lu to start crying as it had all been her own doing. She was halfway to the door when Lu spoke up.

''Andy, I'm not breaking up with you, I just think this is best for now.''
