To all those still reading this story, thank you for your patience! And to whomever leaves reviews on every chapter, I'm more grateful for you than you'll ever know!
This chapter was a b**** to write and is mostly just Lu and Andy doing some much needed talking, I just hope that this will move the story along a bit whilst still being interesting to read. Enjoy!
—The Revelations—
Lu pushed the door shut behind her and turned to Andy. She was vaguely aware that Andy had booked a different room but didn't care; she needed to take her mind off of everything that was going on and couldn't imagine a better way than to have Andy be there.
It had been a few days since Andy had arrived in Puerto Rico and they had mostly kept their distance from each other—Andy had been around to spend time with Marc and had made sure they were fed and had someone to lean on when they needed it, but Lu had still been pushing her away somewhat. Now though… Isabel had received palliative care for a few days and now it was just a few hours after she had passed away.
It was Monday. Lu had expected Andy to go back to Philly as soon as possible to get back to work but had been pleasantly—though she didn't show it—surprised when Andy had shown no signs of even wanting to leave.
Lu's hand lingered on Andy's for a second before she pulled away, leaning against the door waiting for Andy to take the lead to do… anything, really. In the rare moments that her mind hadn't been consumed by Isabel she had wondered why exactly Andy had come to Puerto Rico but didn't want to give it too much thought. Over thinking their relationship is exactly why it now was the way it was.
Andy looked down at her hands before giving Lu a small smile, ''I should probably go, head back to my room.'' She took a step towards the door but was stopped by Lu.
''Wait,'' Lu said, taking a deep breath as she was unsure how Andy would react, ''Stay.'' Her hand was stroking down Andy's arm as she took a step closer.
''I'm not sure that's a good idea,'' Andy said. She wasn't even sure what Lu meant by it, to stay all night, for them to sleep in the same bed, more? All she knew was that with everything going on she didn't feel comfortable with this, this wasn't what she was here for.
''Andy, please… I don't want to be alone tonight, can you just sleep here? Just sleep, no funny business,'' she joked though her face remained serious. ''We can talk about us-''
Andy interrupted her, ''Lu, we can talk about that some other time,'' she said. When Lu didn't respond she sighed, ''Your grandma just died… I don't think this is the time to talk about our relationship.'' She wanted nothing more than to gain some clarity on where Lu stood but now was not the time nor the place to have that particular discussion, especially if it ended in an argument like it had several times before.
''I just need to know that we're okay,'' Lu said, the tears had been coming and going all day but for once it wasn't because of Isabel, it was all about her and Andy. ''I need to know that you're not mad at me for not showing up for lunch, that you don't hate me for dating Julian, that-''
Andy took Lu in her arms, ''Lu, it's okay. I could never hate you, you know that.'' She rubbed Lu's back, ''I want to talk to you about… everything; I really do, but not now. I'm here to support you with everything that's going on, I don't think it's a good idea to discuss our relationship while you're planning Isabel's funeral.''
''But I want to talk about it,'' Lu insisted. She could see why Andy didn't think it was a good idea but it was the one thing she needed. ''I need to focus on something else besides Isabel, and I don't have work here to distract me… I need you to distract me, I don't care if we end up fighting, if you yell at me for hours, I just need something else to think about besides-'' She shook her head as she could feel tears well up again, she was trying her damndest to push Isabel from her mind but it felt futile.
Andy's heart broke at the sight of Lu's tears, but yet she hesitated for a second before finally relenting, ''Okay.''
Lu turned off the light and closed the bathroom door behind her. Her eyelids were heavy and she was happy that she finally had been able to change into her pajamas. She could see Andy was already beneath the covers after bringing her pajamas and a change of clothes to Lu's room.
Andy moved the pillow behind her so she could sit up against the headboard, feeling rather uncomfortable. She had told herself not to do this, had promised herself that she would distract Lu from both Isabel and their relationship and didn't feel great about now breaking that promise even if it was what Lu wanted—or thought she wanted.
Lu slipped beneath the covers next to Andy, assuming the same position before reaching over to her nightstand to turn the only source of light in the room off; she wanted them to have a real discussion and figured that darkness would make them both slightly more comfortable—there was still enough light flowing through the curtains that they could see each other though.
The awkwardness between them was palpable and she hated it; they had had fights, good times and bad times, but things hadn't ever truly been awkward between them. Even the morning after their first rendezvous things hadn't been that bad. She opened her mouth to say something but realized that she didn't know what to say, hoping that if she remained quiet long enough Andy would break the silence.
Andy glanced over at Lu before looking down at her hands which were folded together in her lap. ''So, I-'' she immediately stopped herself when she and Lu started talking at the same time, sharing a laugh between them. ''You first.''
Lu gave Andy a small smile. It wasn't usual for Andy to let Lu talk first and she knew that Andy now only let her because neither one of them was comfortable breaking the silence, both scared they would cause a fight. Still, she just needed to know, ''Why didn't you come sooner?''
Andy could hear the hurt in Lu's voice and wondered how much she actually knew. She was aware that Lu and Lana had been in contact regularly over the past few weeks but didn't know how much had been shared. ''I had patients,'' she said, a slight stammer in her voice. ''And I'm not saying that work is more important than you because it's not, but my patients, your patients… the clinic can't function with both of us gone, I could barely make it work without you there.'' She wasn't even entirely sure what they would do now that they were both actually away but kept her fingers crossed that they still had jobs to return to when they came back to Philly.
Lu looked at Andy in slight disbelief, ''You treated my patients?'' She asked, feeling touched.
''Well… unfortunately they still get sick when you're not there,'' Andy said. ''Peter helped out a lot, and Kayla helped on Wednesday nights… it was a team effort.'' She reached for Lu's hand, giving it a slight squeeze, ''I don't know how you've been doing it all these years, and as a single mother no less; I have a lot of respect for that.'' She had always known Lu was a hard worker but hadn't always appreciated just how much work it really was.
''Thank you,'' Lu said in a thick voice as she moved slightly closer to Andy, leaving only a small gap between them, ''That means a lot.'' It wasn't until she had been in Puerto Rico for a few days that she felt like she was finally calming down. For years she had just kept going and going no matter what, never taking a break for longer than a weekend; and though her time in Puerto Rico had mentally and emotionally been draining her body had much appreciated the not running around 24/7. ''And thank you for looking after my patients too; they don't have anywhere else to go and…''
''I know how much you care for them,'' Andy said. The care she saw Lu had for her patients was unequalled by any other doctor she had met, and she had met plenty. ''They mean a lot to you, and you mean a lot to me,'' she gave Lu a quick smile before looking away, finding it hard to face her, ''I'm sorry I haven't been there for you these few weeks, I know it couldn't have been easy and I should have done more, called more or-'' she didn't know what else she could've done but wished she had done something, anything.
''It's okay, really,'' Lu said, holding Andy's hand in her lap, ''You were there for my patients, and you were there for Marc, they're much more important.'' She knew Andy wasn't a big fan of how she always put herself on the backburner but Marc was the most important thing in her life, the fact that Andy had taken the effort to look after him… it was something none of her exes would've ever thought to do and it meant the world.
''I figured you could use him for support,'' Andy said quietly, ''Between him and Julian you didn't really need me.'' It was painful to say but that had been her train of thought.
''I broke up with Julian,'' Lu said, her eyes focused on Andy's face, wanting to see her reaction, ''I broke up with him after we came back from dress shopping,'' she swear she could see a hint of a smile on Andy's face and was glad for it. She slid down the bed a little bit, trying to get more comfortable. She was on her side, her hand resting on Andy's belly, trying to imagine the life growing inside and wondering what role she would end up playing in its life. ''I know that we're not entirely okay and that we have a lot to talk about, but even though we're not back together,'' yet, she added in her mind, ''I thought it'd be best to end things with him.'' One less thing to get out of the way.
''What's it going to take?'' Andy asked, ''To get back together, I mean.'' She felt like they had gone over and over this too many times. Lu had told her time and time again what she needed to do to get back together and though Andy had listened and had done what she could it still never seemed to be enough.
Lu gave a halfhearted shrug, ''It's not your problem, it's mine. I need to find a way to get over what happened that night,'' to this day the thought of how it had ended made her queasy.
Lu's panting slowly slowed down as she could feel liquid run from her stomach down her side, her mind racing trying to figure out what it could be knowing full well there was only one possibility. Andy's shaking legs were next to her head and Lu softly pushed her away, feeling angry while still wanting to give her the benefit of the doubt.
As Andy dropped down on the bed next to Lu, still coming down from her high, Lu could see Nick kneeling on the bed; his pants were pushed down to his thighs, his underwear pushed down just inches as his dick was poking out, slowly going soft.
Lu scooted up the bed, resting against the headboard as she pulled her knees up to her chest, wanting to cover herself from Nick's eyes which were glued on her. She couldn't face either of them. She knew that Andy and Nick had had a physical relationship in the past and were very comfortable with each other when it came to this, but she couldn't believe Andy. It wasn't a surprise that Nick had been turned on but for one or both of them to act on it…
Nick could sense how upset Lu was and handed her a piece of clothing, not even sure it was Lu's but wanting to do something to make the whole situation easier for her. Though he had enjoyed what Andy had done he knew it was a heat of the moment thing and she was already regretting it.
Lu watched Nick leave the room and quickly put the tank top—it was Andy's but she didn't care—on, wanting to cover herself from Andy's gaze as well.
Andy pulled the covers up to her chest, her mind racing trying to figure out how she could be this stupid. ''Lu…'' she reached out for Lu's hand but got swatted away. She didn't pay mind to Nick when he came back into the room and dropped their clothes on the bed before leaving again. ''Are you okay?'' She asked. Yes, maybe she had taken it the slightest bit further than planned but this had all been Lu's idea. She knew that the post-orgasm moment always provided a lot of clarity but she couldn't imagine Lu regretting the whole thing considering how long she had been talking about it—or joked about it at least.
Lu got up off the bed, pretty sure she had never gotten dressed quicker. Despite that, she lingered. She didn't want to leave the room and face Nick, she didn't have a way to get home anyway as Andy had drove them.
Andy could sense Lu's hesitation as she put on her shoes, ''Lu…?''
''Andy, I just…'' Lu bit her lip as she put her hand on the doorknob, not having any patience for Andy to finish getting ready for them to leave nor wanting to get into it at Nick's apartment, ''I wanna go home.''
''Your problems are my problems,'' Andy said, putting her hand on Lu's, desperately wanting her to know that even if they never managed to work things out she would still always be there for her. She swallowed hard, ''I cheated on you,'' without meaning to but fully aware that that didn't matter, ''I shouldn't have done that without consulting you first. I didn't take it as seriously as I should have and I'm sorry for that.''
Lu remained quiet for a few seconds. ''I like being in control,'' she said firmly, her whole body tense as she tried to suppress her emotions.
''You don't have to tell me that,'' Andy said with a chuckle though wondering how exactly that related to what they were talking about, not noticing how stiff Lu's body had gotten next to her own. She liked Lu taking control, it had led to a lot of great moments when Lu took charge and she wouldn't trade those memories for anything.
Andy's words went into one ear and out the other as Lu wasn't totally focusing on Andy. ''I like taking control because,'' she had to force the words out, finding her train of thought difficult to articulate, ''Because when I was raped… I never felt so out of control. I need to know that I'm in charge of what happens, that nothing happens without my consent… when you did that with Nick, I just…'' she couldn't put it into words but tears started falling and she didn't have the energy to stop them no matter how much she wanted to.
Andy's jaw dropped and she didn't hesitate to pull Lu into her arms. She hadn't thought about it like that, had never actually paid mind to why Lu wanted to be in charge all the time.
''I don't want you to think it's because I don't trust you, because I do—and I trust Nick, too—just the combination of not knowing what was happening and then realizing that you did that with him.'' Lu could feel that her hands was shaking, finding it hard to talk about. To not only have them do that basically on top of her but to then have Nick's semen on her, she had felt gross and violated. ''I know it's not even remotely similar to what Kilner did to me but for some reason it brought back those memories.''
''Lu… I am so sorry,'' Andy said, wanting to reach out for Lu but unsure Lu would be comfortable with that. She could never have fathomed this bringing back those traumas for Lu and felt bad that it hadn't come to her sooner.
''No, I'm sorry,'' Lu said. ''It made me want to push you away just to get away from those memories and that wasn't fair. I just put up walls and started dating Julian as a way to prove to myself that everything was fine when it wasn't…'' that had been hard to admit to herself, ''It wasn't fair to you.'' Lu pulled away from Andy, needing some breathing room. She looked Andy in the eyes, needing to know that she was being honest, ''I just need to know,'' just to know that she wasn't completely crazy, ''You knew I meant for him to just watch, right?''
''I did.'' Andy could see that finally having this confirmation hurt Lu. ''I got caught up in the moment,'' she said softly, ''He and I had been together so many times it was like falling back into an old routine. It wasn't anything to do with you, or Milo for that matter.''
''It wouldn't have been so bad had you just told me you wanted to do that,'' Lu said. ''I've been telling you for months to just talk to me; to open up to me about what's going on in your life, about where you want our relationship to go… Having you and Nick together like that… it's just hard because you were already pushing me away and then you go and do that too?''
''I'm sorry for that,'' Andy said, wishing she could force herself to be more comfortable with being vulnerable.
''So why didn't you?'' Lu asked, ''You never had a problem opening up to me when we were just friends, what changed?'' It was something that had been bothering her for a long time and she was hoping that Andy would finally explain what was going on with her. She could feel Andy pull away a bit and reached out, pulling her closer again. ''Andy?''
''You're not the first girl I've had feelings for,'' Andy said suddenly, quietly. She had lied to Lu—and herself—many times about this particular thing and had felt bad about it, but it was difficult for her to admit. With how open Lu had just been to her though she felt it was only fair to show Lu the same courtesy.
Lu frowned, ''I thought you said you had never dated girls before.''
''I hadn't,'' Andy said, ''But there have been crushes. Nothing serious enough to consider a relationship but still… I had a crush on a girl back in high school, I wrote about it in my diary and my dad read it,'' in her peripheral vision she could see Lu was staring at her but knew it would be easier to talk to Lu if she wasn't facing her, ''He wasn't too happy about it.'' When she closed her eyes she could still feel the sting on her cheek, the derogatory terms he had thrown her way—she just thanked her lucky stars he hadn't thrown her out. ''And then I married Les and then after him there was Milo… I didn't really have to deal with those feelings until you.
''I think I've been pushing you away because… my dad is dying. Every time I see him he's a bit worse, I don't want these last few years with him having him hate me,'' Andy said. She had always tried to keep the peace and since her dad's diagnosis even more so, which was of course the moment her feelings for Lu reared their ugly head. ''I know he would disapprove and so I figured it would be better not to get involved with you, or any woman for that matter… and then we did get together and I tried to keep things from getting too serious-''
''You don't want us to get more serious?'' Lu asked. She had been keeping her fingers crossed that they were heading towards a reconciliation but she needed to know sooner rather than later if Andy felt the same way. Her mind went over all the proposals Andy had made since their breakup: for Lu to move in with her, for Lu to be a second mother to the baby, all of that was more serious than she could have ever hoped for.
''That's the thing, I do.'' Andy said, though she couldn't face Lu she did reach for her hand, feeling relieved when Lu's soft hand grabbed hold of her own.
Lu licked her lips, trying to find a way to comfort Andy. ''You know that I'm okay with us keeping our relationship a secret from your family, I've told you that many times,'' she said, confused as to what wasn't clear about that to Andy. ''I told you that I want our friends to know, and that I can tell people when I want to but I'm okay with us not telling anyone else.''
''I'm not.'' Andy said, ''I'm not okay with that. I don't want to have to keep our relationship a secret from anyone let alone my family, I shouldn't have to.''
Lu wasn't sure what to say. Her mother had passed away when she was ten and she had had Isabel as support for a couple of years after that but after getting knocked up at sixteen years old she had been on her own; she could only imagine what Andy must be going through. Over the years she had gotten some insight into what Andy's relationship with her father was like but she wasn't privy to all the details, it had never been brought up much by either of them.
''I just need to get through Friday and after that I won't have to see them for a couple of months,'' Andy said. Family was always a priority to her and that had always included her parents as well but now she just wanted to get every visit with them over with. Every time she saw her mother she felt the rejection she had felt when she told her mother about her relationship with Lu; she needed time to figure out what she was doing, where their relationship was headed, and she needed time to get the courage to tell both her parents about their relationship.
''Friday?'' Lu asked though a second later she remembered, ''Friday… I had completely forgotten about the wedding,'' she said, hoping Andy wouldn't take that badly. ''You… you need to go, what are you still doing here?'' True, she had never been a bride but she knew how much work went into weddings and that as soon as Andy went home there would be plenty of last minute details that needed her time and attention.
''Lu, I'm not going back to Philadelphia without you,'' Andy said. She had made up her mind about this pretty much as soon as she had told Milo that she would be back in time. Lu had asked her time and time again to make her a priority and Andy had struggled since their breakup to show Lu that she was a priority but this was it… And she wasn't just doing it to prove something to Lu; she didn't want Lu to be left on her own to deal with Isabel's affairs, Andy knew she couldn't celebrate her wedding knowing what Lu was going through.
''Don't worry about me,'' Lu said. ''You've been planning this for months; Milo will kill you if you don't show up.'' She knew this wedding had probably cost them a butt load of money, people would be coming in from out of town… It wasn't just any regular old party.
Andy took Lu's face in her hands, ''Lu, I'm not going anywhere without you.''
