Let's raise a glass to me not having to apologize for being incredibly late uploading like usual :P BTW there's a dinner that gets mentioned in this chapter, if you're wondering why I didn't write it; I wrote half of it before deciding it was too boring and deleting it. As always, hope you enjoy!
–The Uncertainty–
''Hey,'' Andy said as she slid down in the chair across from Nick. It was the tail end of her lunch hour and after both Milo and Lu had let her know they were busy she had opted for a lonesome lunch, until she saw Nick. She knew that he had talked to Lu while she was away on her honeymoon and Andy hadn't spoken with him since then, she just hoped he would respond well to her news.
''Hi,'' Nick said, surprised to see her, moving his tray over to make room for hers. ''Are we sure this is allowed?'' He asked, trying to say it jokingly though he knew it wasn't funny.
''Excuse me?''
''Lu.''
''Right,'' Andy said, taking a bite from her fruit salad. She had hoped to ease into this conversation but Nick seemed to have other ideas.
''The rumor mill is that you and her,'' he waved his fork around, ''that that whole thing is happening again.'' The first clue had been at the wedding; after the uncomfortable moment between him and Lu he had seen her and Andy disappear into a room together. It was the whole reason why he had decided to apologize to her afterwards, no harm in trying to make nice, right?
''We are back together, yes,'' Andy confirmed. ''That's what I need to talk to you about.''
''How so?'' Nick asked.
Andy hesitated. ''We're inviting everyone over for dinner, Sunday-''
''Who's everyone?''
''Peter, Kayla, Lana, Robert, you know, everyone.''
''Everyone except for me?'' Nick guessed. It was to be expected. Even though he didn't think it was fair he couldn't say he was surprised.
''Lu isn't really comfortable with you being there,'' Andy said, confirming his suspicions. She actually hadn't discussed this with Lu but it didn't take a genius – even though she was one – to know that this was for the best. And at the moment Andy would do anything to have everything go smoothly.
''Great.''
''I just wanted to let you know,'' Andy said, hoping that it would make it a little easier for him. ''Ehm…'' now came the hard part, ''the reason we're having everyone over is because we have some news…''
''You mean you and her being together?'' Nick asked. He pushed his food tray away, he was losing his appetite.
''Well, that, and-'' she took a deep breath, ''and we're having a baby, I'm pregnant.'' She held her breath waiting for his reaction but there was none. She reached out for his hand but he pulled it away. ''I didn't want you to find out from anyone else.''
Nick looked away, his eyes following the swaying hips of one of the nurses walking past but he didn't actually care, ''why would I care?''
''I just figured-''
''What? That I would care that after you aborted our baby, without even mentioning it to me I might add,'' he would never admit how much he still thought about that, ''that I would now care that you're having a baby with Milo?''
His tone made her wish she had never brought this up. She knew that Lu would rather Andy never talked to Nick again but wasn't sure that Lu knew just how badly she had hurt him. Despite Lu's fears she never wanted to be with Nick again, she had never had those feelings for him and didn't imagine she ever would, but she cared about him.
''Why would I care that all my friends are having dinner together without me, because one of them now hates me, because you fucked up,'' Nick said. He cared about Andy, and the last thing he wanted was to throw her under the bus but he had had to set the record straight with Lu and just hoped that she could see that night from his perspective.
''Nick…'' she waited until he calmed down a bit, ''I know these past few weeks probably haven't been easy, especially with Peter and Kayla now dating,'' she would never forget his admission of feelings for Peter and hoped that after Peter and Kayla showing up to her wedding together Nick would be okay.
That had been painful to watch. To watch Peter and Kayla be lovey-dovey together all night, to hear Peter talk about Kayla the way Nick wished Peter would talk about him. But he had always known that love would remain unrequited, the whole situation with Lu and Andy had blindsided him and hurt that much more because of it. ''Forget about it, it doesn't matter.''
It mattered very much and she could see it on his face. ''I want you to know that you can always call me. If you need to talk I'm here for-''
''Here for me until Lu tells you it's not okay?'' Nick said, knowing that it would only be a matter of time until Lu wouldn't be okay with them talking on the phone either anymore, he doubted Lu was even okay with them talking in the cafeteria like they were doing now.
Andy frowned. She couldn't believe what he was suggesting but knew there was a layer of truth to it. ''Lu doesn't decide who I should and should not talk to.''
''Sure.''
''Nick, I-''
''Andy, it doesn't matter,'' Nick reiterated. ''You can have your happily ever after with Lu,'' have the relationship that he wanted with Peter, ''and we will never have to talk to each other again.''
Andy watched him storm off before burying her face in her hands. She had expected for it to go badly but not to this extent. She could feel someone grabbing one of her hands and looked up, watching Lu plant a kiss on it as she sat down next to Andy. She didn't know how much Lu had heard and didn't want to make any guesses either.
''That looked like a fun conversation,'' Lu said, grabbing Andy's fork and helping herself.
''I know that I messed up,'' Andy was almost too aware of that, ''and that the fact that he and I shouldn't talk is completely my own fault,'' she had come this close to putting it as Lu not being okay with them talking, not wanting to make it sound like she was blaming Lu, ''but that really sucked.''
Lu gave her a look, ''so did-''
''I know.'' Andy said, cutting her off. ''Trust me, I know, I don't need you to remind me every second of every day.'' She jumped up, grabbing her chair just before it toppled over. She refused to meet Lu's eye. ''I'm gonna…'' she didn't even know.
Lu held on to Andy's hand, ''what about-'' she looked over at Andy's abandoned salad.
''You can have it.''
Lu looked at Andy as she straightened the mirror above Lu's dresser. Lu was sitting on her bed, leaning back on her hands. Most of the nights the past week she had spent over at Andy's house, sleeping in Andy's bed, Andy sandwiched between her and Milo. But after what had happened yesterday with Nick… she had only heard the last bit of their conversation but that had been more than enough. It had been an easy decision to spend one last night by herself in her apartment.
Andy had – despite the previous day – shown up bright and early to move Lu's stuff and get her officially moved into the Campbell/Morton/and now Delgado residence. Still, there had been tension. Lu wished she could go back in time, take back what she had said the previous day. Although, if she could go back to any moment, there was one moment from the wedding in particular that stood out to her. Sure, she and Andy hadn't yet officially reconciled at the time but she had felt closer to Andy then than she did now.
The bright flash from the camera had officially memorialized the moment. The whole family together. Even as the kids moved away, talking amongst themselves, Lu could feel Andy's hand still in her own and looked down at it, her thumb stroking Andy's hand. Her eyes followed Milo as he walked away, before she turned to Andy.
''You feeling better?'' Andy asked, ''I mean, how are you?''
''Slightly better,'' Lu said. The couple of hours of sleep had helped a lot, she hadn't realized just how much she had needed them. There was a moment of silence between them, ''it really was a beautiful wedding, I'm glad I came.''
''Me too.''
Lu could feel Andy wrap an arm around her, her hand stroking Lu's arm, as they walked outside. It was still pretty warm and she could see some fireflies dancing in the sky. Her eyes fell down to the bouquet in Andy's hand, ''weren't you supposed to throw that?'' She asked. She considered it a pretty silly belief that the person who caught the bouquet was the next one to get married, but it had been done at the few weddings she had been to.
''Probably,'' Andy said. It hadn't crossed her mind. She looked at it for a second and brought it to her face, the flowers still fragrant, before turning to Lu, handing it to her.
Yes, it was a silly belief that Andy had handed it to her as some kind of promise to do with the future of their relationship, but at long last it was something.
Lu scooted back on the bed, sticking out her hand to Andy, ''come here.'' She pulled Andy into her arms, situating her between her spread legs. Andy's head came to rest on Lu's shoulder in the first moment of calm of the whole day.
''I can't believe you live here now,'' Andy said. There were still some boxes to unpack but for the most part they were done. After too long of not asking to Lu to move in despite knowing that she wanted to, and too long of wondering why exactly she wasn't asking Lu to move in, it had finally happened.
''Exciting, right?'' Lu asked, hoping she wasn't the only one that felt that way. She wondered what new doors it would open for them but knew that Andy was probably hesitant to take any more steps for now.
''Very.''
It didn't sound too convincing but Lu pushed that to the back of her mind. ''I want to talk about what happened yesterday.''
''Lu, do we really need to-'' she tried to sit up but Lu pulled her back. ''It's okay, okay? I know how you feel about him and I shouldn't have talked to him.''
''That's not what I meant,'' Lu said. ''I want to apologize for bringing up, or at least attempting to bring up, what happened yet again. You're right; you know how I feel about him and about what happened and I shouldn't constantly remind both of us of that night. And really, as long as you don't force us into the same room together then I'm fine with you being friends with him.''
Andy pulled away, glad when Lu let her, and turned to Lu. ''You mean that?''
Lu understood her skepticism. ''Friends, nothing more.''
''I wouldn't dream of it,'' Andy said.
''If you want to talk to him in the cafeteria I really don't care,'' she did a little but she could get over that. ''Just don't talk to him about our relationship or anything, I don't need him to know anything personal about me… or us.'' She wiped a strand of hair away from Andy's face, putting it behind her ear. ''Is that okay?'' Lu asked, leaning in and kissing Andy softly.
''Perfect.''
They sat in silence for a bit, Lu laying down on her bed, glad to have it in her new bedroom. She only hoped that Andy would actually spend a decent amount of time in it. They hadn't discussed what the sleeping arrangements would be, if Andy would spend fifty percent of the time in both bedrooms or if it was just decided on a day to day basis.
Andy put her hand on Lu's leg, hoping to get her attention even though, just like Andy herself, she had seemed to be lost in thought just a second ago. ''So…'' she took a deep breath.
''So…?''
''I have a possibly stupid question to ask.''
'''A stupid question'? That doesn't sound like you,'' Lu said, turning to Andy. ''Shoot.''
''Have you ever discussed our relationship with Kayla?'' Andy asked, keeping her fingers crossed that she had.
''I don't think so, no. Why?''
''Does she even know we were ever together in the first place?'' Andy asked. She could only imagine how awkward it could get to suddenly spring on Kayla that they were back together when she didn't even know they ever had been. ''I mean, we are going to tell them that we're back together, but I never told her we were ever together. I know you told Lana, and she told Peter, I told Robert and Nick but other than that…''
Lu laughed, ''of course Kayla knows, doesn't everybody know by now?'' It seemed like everybody had heard about their night in her office forever ago now, and not only that but since she had told Lana – the biggest gossiper in the entire hospital – there was no way Kayla didn't know. ''I'm sure someone mentioned it to her at one point or another.''
''She's smart enough to know that not all rumors are true,'' Andy countered, ''maybe she just thinks it was all a big joke that someone came up with and will be caught completely by surprise when we tell her tomorrow.''
''Okay, so… drag her aside when they get here and tell her, crisis averted,'' Lu suggested with a shrug. She could see Andy wasn't all that satisfied by her answer though. ''They're our friends, they'll be happy for us.'' When Andy didn't seem convinced she sighed, ''what's wrong? Is it the baby?''
''Maybe a little.''
''We don't have to tell them about that,'' Lu assured her, ''although I don't know how much longer you'll be able to keep it a secret.''
Andy gave her a look, ''you think I can't hide this?'' She asked, putting her hand on her lower belly. It was true, she was showing a bit more every week but it wasn't anything a sweater and a lie about having a big lunch couldn't hide.
''I think you looking nauseous and running to the bathroom to throw up for weeks on end might have tipped some people off,'' Lu laughed. She pulled Andy into her arms, ''I want to shout this news from the rooftops, aren't you excited?''
''Of course I am.''
''Can you tell your face that?'' Lu asked jokingly even though she meant it, her hand on Andy's cheek.
Andy smiled widely, obviously fake, ''how's this?''
Lu laughed, ''oh, so much better.''
Andy leaned in, kissing Lu softly before pulling away with a smile, a genuine one this time, ''how was that?''
''Even better.''
So… Kayla hadn't known.
It hadn't been a terribly big surprise but still, Andy had been able to see on Kayla's face that it was a bit of a shock – the whole Milo, Andy, Lu affair being very different from what she had seen in her rather traditional upbringing on a rural farm. Once the shock had worn off everybody had been happy for them though even though Andy had senses that that subsided a little when she told them about the baby.
So what if it was an unusual situation? There was nothing wrong with a baby having three loving parents as opposed to two loving parents. But, with even their friends having doubts Andy was starting to get a bit more anxious about the whole situation.
''Hey,'' Lu turned to her side, watching Andy who was silently laying next to her, frowning. ''What are you thinking about?''
It was late at night. Their guests had left hours ago and after Milo had announced that he needed to work on his paper to get it ready for publishing, Andy had opted to spend the night with Lu in her room.
Andy shook her head, ''just thinking about what it will be like when the baby gets here.''
''You really don't want to know what you're having?'' The moment the nurse had asked if she wanted to know what she was having when Lu was pregnant with Marc she had jumped on the chance, she was plenty patient but not when it came to this.
''I think it'll be nice to have it be a surprise,'' Andy said, ''besides, what does it matter? You already have a son, I already have two girls…''
''But Milo doesn't have either.'' It wasn't often that Lu gave much thought to Milo's view on things but if it helped her case then what was the harm?
Andy turned to Lu a bit more, ''he said that he doesn't care if we find out before or when it is born.'' Lu was very persuasive but Andy couldn't imagine her changing her mind on this. With Jesse she hadn't found out what she was going to have, and the only reason she found out with Lizzy was because she had looked at the ultrasound at the wrong moment. She told Lu as much, ''if I happen to see it then fine, but I don't need to know.''
Lu rolled her eyes, ''fine, you have it your way.''
Andy chuckled at Lu's exaggerated response, ''so, how about now that we still can, we don't focus on the baby and instead focus on us.'' She pulled Lu a bit closer, kissing her as she slipped her hand under Lu's pajama top.
''Yes, let's,'' Lu said, pulling away and getting off of the bed, ''I actually wanted to talk to you about… us.''
Andy frowned at her, ''should I be worried?''
''No, no, of course not,'' Lu was quick to reply. ''I just- I want to try something new.''
Andy sat up a bit more, folding her legs under her, ''something new?''
''In bed, yeah.''
''Something new in bed?'' Andy repeated, ''okay, what is it?''
Lu wasn't quite sure how to phrase it, or how Andy would respond to the suggestion. ''I want to try to reverse our roles a bit, at least sometimes,'' Andy's confusion was clear, ''with me being more submissive and you taking charge.''
''Okay…''
Lu ran a hand through her hair, ''I told you about me not feeling all that in control when we were at Nick's house,'' she had mentioned that night so many times it was starting to not affect her as much when it came up anymore, though she was sure it would never not hurt, ''and though I sincerely hope that'll never happen again-''
''It won't.'' Andy promised, feeling like she needed to make that clear as Lu was still gathering her thoughts.
''Right.'' For a second Lu forgot where she had left off, ''I just think that I should try to let go off the control a bit; in an exposure therapy kind of way.'' She could see that the idea was slowly sinking in for Andy, ''I just need to have my whole body realize that I'll be okay even when I don't know what's going to happen.''
Andy moved to the edge of the bed, grabbing Lu's hands, ''are you sure about this?''
''Yeah,'' Lu said though there wasn't an ounce of certainty to be found, ''I think it'll be good for me.'' She could feel the anxiety coursing through her body at the thought of letting herself put through some of the stuff she had put Andy through over the years. ''I mean, I doubt it'll be any fun, but…''
''We can take it slow,'' Andy said, hoping to ease Lu's nerves somewhat.
''So you're okay with it?'' Lu asked. From their first moment together Lu had taken control off all their encounters and it'd be difficult to get out of that mindset, but there was no one she trusted as much as she trusted Andy and hoped that she would be gentle coaxing her through the experience.
''I'd do anything for you, you know that,'' Andy said. She pulled Lu into her arms, her face buried in Lu's chest. ''So how do you want to do this?''
Lu took a step away, thinking it over for a second. She had been thinking about this for a few weeks now but hadn't ironed out all the details yet. ''I want you to decide that,'' Lu said, ''the less I know the better.''
