Let's not talk about my non-existent uploading schedule, I really need to be better about this. Also, (at least for the time being) Les is really just in the story so I have an explanation for where Lizzy is when Lu/Andy or Andy/Milo are doing things that shouldn't be done when there's a child in the house lol.
The Conditions
Their bags had already been in the hallway so they had thrown them in the trunk as her father looked on from behind the dining room window. The icy look on his face had sent chills down Andy's spine as they finally pulled out of the driveway, Lu behind the wheel, speeding, wanting to leave the memories of the weekend quickly behind her.
All Andy had heard were some mumbles from Lu as she pulled into the parking lot of the nearest convenience store and left Andy behind as she headed in.
Andy leaned her head back against the headrest, her vision going blurry from un-spilled tears as she looked out at the nearly empty parking lot, her attention being roused when a figure vaguely resembling Lu came walking back towards the car.
''They didn't have any ice,'' Lu said apologetically as she sat down in the driver seat.
Andy accepted the bag Lu had given her, ''peas?'' She asked. It didn't matter. Anything would do. The left side of her face was throbbing and anything that could take the edge of the pain was more than welcome.
Lu shrugged. ''I ehm… I got us some sandwiches,'' she said, handing the bag to Andy. She fastened her seatbelt but her hand lingered on the key, needing a moment before she could turn it. Andy's hand landed on her arm and she looked away, the yellow streetlights that dotted the parking lot were blurry as tears filled her eyes.
''Are you okay?'' Andy asked. Considering how long she had known her father it hadn't been too difficult to predict how he would react to her and Lu's relationship, but it had still come as a shock – even more so for Lu. Lu was shivering from the cold and her hands were shaking, Andy tugged on her arm in an attempt to draw her closer but Lu was stiff.
Lu forced herself to take some deep breaths, needing to calm down before looking back at Andy. They were both quiet when she finally did. She had known Andrew wasn't going to respond well and she felt like an idiot for not seeing the slap coming after she had read Andy's old diary just that morning, but it had taken her by surprise. ''You're bleeding,'' she whispered as she eyed the still-forming bruise extending from behind Andy's hairline to her temple, some drops of blood clinging to her hair strands.
Andy felt the side of her head, feeling the bit of wetness and looking at her now blood-stained fingers. ''It's probably just from his ring.'' Andy flinched away from Lu's gentle touch, ''it's fine.''
Lu sat back in the driver's seat. ''Nothing about this is fine.'' Every time she closed her eyes she saw the look in Andy Senior's eyes and it made her blood boil.
Andy knew Lu's harsh tone was a result of her father and not her but it still made her flinch. ''Lu…''
She stared at Andy. Her hands were balled into fists, shaking slightly. ''How are you this calm?''
''I know what my father is like.'' It was partially a lie; yeah she knew him quite well but she hadn't imagined he would do this, would still try to dictate her life to this extent even after all these years, but freaking out over it wouldn't help Lu, that much she knew. ''Come here.'' She tugged on the sleeve of Lu's coat.
Lu let Andy pull her close, her warmth helped her calm down somewhat – calmer but not any less pissed off. She pulled away, turning the key and kicking the car into gear, ready to leave Washington and the whole wretched weekend behind her.
''Lu…'' Andy put her hand on Lu's arm. When Lu finally looked back her eyes immediately went to the bruise. Andy put her hand on it, as if hiding it was going to make it go away. She didn't know how to soothe Lu's worries. ''It'll heal.''
''And your relationship with your parents?'' Lu asked. That wouldn't heal as quickly or effortlessly – and she felt responsible for it. Yeah it had been Andy's decision to tell them about their relationship in the first place but if they hadn't gotten together there wouldn't a big black cloud in the sky.
''It'll be different,'' Andy concurred. She honestly wasn't sure if they would ever be able to fully heal what had been broken. It wasn't the first time they had been at odds with each other, it wasn't the first time her father had hit her… and they had always been able to get past it by pretending it didn't happen. With how few phone calls she had gotten from her mother the past few months there hadn't been any pretending, there had been no words spoken at all, and it didn't bode well. Still, she didn't want to go back in the closet just to appease her parents. ''Of course it's going to change but that doesn't mean that's a bad thing.''
Lu bit down on her lower lip. ''I just don't want you to hate me if they decide to keep being jerks.''
''Trust me, I won't.'' Lu frowned at Andy. ''Have I ever broken your trust?'' Andy swallowed hard, wishing she hadn't taken it there. ''Don't answer that,'' she quickly said, not wanting to go down that particular rabbit hole and especially not on a night that was already bad to begin with. There was a small smile on Lu's lips, glad that Andy had recognized her mistake. Andy hesitated for a moment, ''do you trust me, at all?''
''Of course I do.'' Lu answered quickly. There was always a small seed of doubt but she did trust Andy. Or at least she thought she did. She was pretty sure. Lu looked over at Andy, it was clear where the question had come from but she still wanted to know. ''You think I don't?''
''You thought I wanted to get back together with Les just because I had one dream about him,'' Andy said, explaining her doubts, ''you don't trust me to be alone with Nick. And…''
When Andy stopped talking Lu glanced over at her, wondering what the reason for the pause was. ''And what?''
''Last Tuesday.''
Right. With the events of the night it seemed like a lifetime ago but as soon as those words left Andy's mouth Lu was right back in that moment. The moment that Lu had kept replaying in her mind ever since it happened. Andy on top of her, Lu's fists clenched around the spokes of the bed, her knuckles white as she tried to block the intrusive memories, all she needed was Andy to listen so they could move past that one stupid moment.
''I do want to try again,'' Lu said quietly. And she did; it had been one of the harder things she had chosen to do but she knew that if they just worked on their communication a bit – if she could just open up so Andy could actually see it from her point of view instead of having to guess Lu's experiences – it would be good for her.
It surprised Andy. After seeing the look on Lu's face, not to mention the anxiety that had preceded it, she had thought Lu would want to pretend it hadn't happened. ''You do?''
''I just need you to listen…'' Lu whispered, finding her voice was failing her.
''I know it's hard for you to talk about but if you want us to do this then you need to tell me what your boundaries are, what I can and cannot do,'' Andy explained. She couldn't see how their next attempt wouldn't end in disaster if Lu wouldn't open up.
''I know.''
''Do you think you can do that?'' Andy asked, already feeling the resistance coming from Lu.
If she could tell the story of her rape to Dana, to the police, to a jury who was more than a little skeptical, then she could surely tell it to Andy. But somehow it felt much harder. Even though she knew Andy wouldn't even for a moment doubt her story – especially not since she had heard Kilner confess when he had been her patient – she could still feel the anger she had felt when Dana questioned her version of events and it was difficult to move past that.
Lu's silence spoke volumes. ''You don't have to recount that whole night minute by minute,'' Andy said, wanting to find ways to make it easier for Lu, they could always work up to that anyway, ''just tell me your boundaries. Tell me where I can and can't touch you…''
''Okay,'' Lu said, clearing her throat, ''just, you can't hold me down, and I need to be able to see you.'' At least it was a start.
Andy hesitated, she hadn't expected Lu to actually share that right that moment, but was glad she had. ''That shouldn't be too hard,'' she said, rubbing Lu's shoulder, ''and if there's anything else just tell me; or write it down if that's easier.'' Lu's whole body had tensed up and Andy pulled away, figuring she probably needed space, ''I'm glad you told me.''
Lu gave a slight nod. ''Me too,'' she said quietly, happy that she had thrown it out there before giving herself the time to obsess over how Andy would respond. ''All this time I've been asking you to open up to me but I've been keeping a lot of stuff to myself as well.''
Andy chuckled, ''to be fair, you wanna know everything.'' It was easy to neglect to share some stuff about forty plus years of life lived and there were many things she had simply forgotten, but she felt bad for the stories she'd purposefully left behind.
''Yeah I do.'' Lu said, glancing over at Andy. ''I mean, I was never really comfortable with someone knowing everything about me and listening to them talk about themselves all day got exhausting after a certain point. But with you… I wanna know everything, and I want you to know everything about me.''
Andy grabbed Lu's hand, ''me too.''
''I think that maybe that's why I was so uncomfortable with Les being around,'' Lu said, ''he doesn't just know everything about you he was there with you for most of it.'' She had mostly gotten used to sharing Andy with Milo but knowing there was someone out there who knew more about Andy than she even did about herself, it made her a bit jealous. ''And of course your dream didn't help.''
Andy bit her lip, knowing that she better share Les' news with Lu before she found out from someone else. ''Lu-''
''I know. What you dream isn't within your controls and it was probably just-''
''Lu,'' Andy said, interrupting her, ''what I actually need to tell you is,'' she took a deep breath, ''Les is moving back to Philadelphia, I don't know exactly when but soon probably.'' Lu's silence was deafening. ''This doesn't change anything. Yes, he'll be around for the girls but that's it.''
''Kay.''
Andy sighed. ''Milo and I have been talking a bit about how to make our current arrangement work for all three of us, maybe you should write down some things that'll make things easier for you.''
''You mean like rules and stuff?'' Lu asked. For a second she missed living on her own. She loved now living with Andy and being able to be there during her pregnancy, and not running into Julian in the hallway, but life had been easier when she lived on her own without having to run anything by anyone.
''Just things that you would like to see changed from how they currently are,'' Andy said. Lu's nod told her all she needed to know. Andy grabbed the bag with the stuff Lu had gotten from the store, putting the thawed peas back in there and grabbing a sandwich, handing it to Lu, ''you should eat something.''
It was dark when they pulled into the driveway back home. There had been a lot of silent moments during the drive and Andy's attempts to start conversations hadn't really been fruitful.
''Do you want me to stay with you tonight?'' Andy asked as Lu turned off the car, figuring that Lu could need the support with everything that she was going through and wanting to help Lu make a decision about what she would do if she did turn out to be pregnant.
''It's probably Milo's turn,'' Lu said, handing the keys to Andy who was gonna be the one driving the car in the morning.
''I'm sure he would understand if-'' the look on Lu's face silenced her, ''are we okay?''
''Yeah, I'm just tired,'' Lu said. It wasn't totally a lie; she was sure she would feel better once she had gotten some rest. She could see the doubt on Andy's face and leaned in, lingering for a second when she kissed her, ''we're fine.''
''If you say so,'' Andy said quietly as Lu got out of the car, needing a second before getting out and following her into the house, the front door falling shut behind her as Milo was making his way downstairs.
''Is Lizzy still up?'' Andy asked, wondering as she looked at her watch. It was already rare enough that she had time to spend with her daughter and now she had missed out on a whole weekend with her.
''She just turned in,'' Milo said, giving Andy a kiss on the cheek. When he pulled away his face dropped, his hand moving to Andy's face, ''what happened?''
''It's nothing,'' Andy said, not wanting to talk about it, ''I'm gonna go say goodnight.'' It was partially because she wanted to see her daughter and partially because she didn't want to relive the events of that day by telling Milo.
Milo's eyes followed Andy as she went up the stairs before he turned back to Lu, seeking answers from her instead.
''Her father's an asshole,'' Lu said. She didn't know if Andy expected her to explain to Milo what had happened but she needed to get it off her chest anyway, ''he found out about us.'' She said, telling Milo the whole story as they went into the living room and sat down. It was getting late and she was tired, but she knew she was too fired up to fall asleep.
Milo closed the bedroom door behind him, seeing Andy already on the bed in her pajamas, reading a book. He slipped into bed next to her, ''Lu told me what happened,'' he said, sitting up against the headboard, taking off his watch and putting it on the nightstand before turning back to his wife.
''I think it really scared her,'' Andy said, putting her book away. Lu wasn't the type to easily scare but the shock on her face had been evident.
''Can you blame her?'' Milo asked, his thumb on Andy's chin as he turned her face so he could check out the bruise, grabbing Andy's hand when she moved to cover it. He had been plenty shocked when he had first heard Andy's recounting of the night Les had hit her, to now hear a similar story angered him just as much.
''I guess not,'' Andy said. ''She seemed so upset on the whole drive here, but I don't know if it was just because of this or…'' she shrugged, ''maybe there's something else.'' They had talked about some difficult stuff but that hadn't felt close to being the full story.
''You should talk to her about it,'' Milo said, pulling her close, ''in the morning.'' With work and her being gone for a few days it had been too long since he had been able to hold her close, he wasn't about to give that up even if he did want to be supportive of her and Lu's relationship.
Andy buried her face in his chest. ''I missed you.'' Sometimes it felt like her and Lu together were a hurricane and Milo was the calm sea; just a more peaceful constant that she could return to when things got rough. And though she was glad for it – for the break from tense moment and distrust – she really just wanted her and Lu to be that way too.
''Me too,'' Milo said, his strong arms around her.
''What're you doing up?'' Milo asked, grabbing a glass of water before sitting down across from Lu.
The sound of footsteps on the stairs had woke him up, finding Lu now sitting at the kitchen table writing in a notebook – shielding the content from his vision with her hand – wasn't too big a surprise.
''Couldn't sleep.'' She said, fiddling with the pen in her hand. She looked up at him. ''You?''
''I heard you going downstairs, just wanted to check that you're okay.'' He didn't know Andy's father all that well but could imagine how a fight with him would shake Lu and he could see on her face that it had affected her. It had been difficult to say goodbye when they both went off to bed as he could see she was still replaying it in her mind, and now wished he had done more.
''Sorry for waking you.''
''That's okay,'' he said quietly. ''Do you want to talk about it?'' He could see the hesitation and knew exactly why; they weren't close, and talking to him was probably greatly inferior to talking to Andy or even to another close friend. ''Andy's worried about you.''
Lu frowned at him, she hadn't expected Andy to discuss her feelings with Milo at all. ''Her father's an asshole,'' she reiterated.
''Can't argue with you on that.'' She snorted and he couldn't help but smile, just glad they agreed on something – something that was too rare for his liking. Milo looked down at the notebook in front of her, some unintelligible scribbles, it looked like a list of some kind. He couldn't imagine what could possibly be on her mind at this time of night. ''What are you writing?''
''Just something Andy asked me to write.'' Lu didn't know if Andy had discussed this with him but it couldn't hurt to talk it over with him first. ''With me now living here we need to figure out how we're going to make this work.''
Milo sat back in his chair, ''yeah.''
''Andy asked me what I need to make this work, you know… the rules, so to speak,'' Lu said with a sigh. It felt like a very thin line between asking for enough to have a meaningful relationship with Andy and asking for so much that she was imposing on Milo and Andy's relationship. Lu could imagine Andy agreeing to most of the things she had written down – most of the things had been discussed by the two of them already anyway – but she couldn't gauge Milo's opinion on any of it.
He took a deep breath, well aware that he probably wasn't going to like most of the things Lu wanted. He certainly didn't feel like shooting her down on any of the items, but knew he had to discuss them sooner or later or risk getting shut out of all decisions entirely. ''Maybe you should discuss this with Andy first?'' That certainly seemed easier.
Lu thought about this for a second, realizing it wouldn't be such a bad thing to know his thoughts first. ''I think she'll be a lot more agreeable if she knew you had agreed to them.'' Lu said. Plus, she was sure that if Andy saw them getting along for once she'd prioritize keeping the peace over disagreeing on minor stuff.
Figuring she was probably right Milo nodded. ''Okay, lay it on me.''
''Now?'' Lu glanced at the clock, in her head counting how long she had until her alarm went off. ''Okay,'' she didn't know where to begin and scanned the list for something that they could easily agree on, ''when it comes to where Andy sleeps, I think alternating nights would be best, with one night a week just being kinda whatever.'' There was a small smile dancing on his lips and she was afraid to ask. ''What?''
''Nothing.'' He said, sitting up more straight. ''Sounds good.''
Lu shook her head slightly, trying to ignore his demeanor. ''I was thinking that – since I work on Wednesday nights – we'll just schedule around that.'' She looked up at him and he seemed to agree. Next item. ''You and I don't go into each other's bedrooms unless the other has agreed to it.'' It had happened more often that she ended up in his bedroom than vice versa and though she felt selfish for it she wanted to keep it that way.
''Fine with me.''
''Okay. If one of us wants to do something with Andy, sexually, we don't need to ask the other permission for that.'' Though she and Andy talked quite openly about sex with each other she wasn't used to doing that with Milo – she kept her eyes on the paper in front of her as she was talking, knowing full well he wasn't bothered at all.
Milo thought about it for a second, agreeing with the concept but needing clarification. ''Let's say I'm punishing her for something,'' he looked at Lu who was still avoiding his gaze, he knew he didn't need to tell her what that punishment would be, ''and so she goes to you for-''
''We'll figure it out.'' Lu said quickly, interrupting him. ''We'll talk about it if it happens, when it happens'' she could see he wasn't entirely pleased with that answer, ''maybe we can punish her together if she does that, if you want.''
He raised his eyebrows, wondering if this meant what he thought it did. ''Are you putting threesomes back on the table?''
''They were never really off the table,'' Lu said quietly, feeling embarrassed – it felt like admitting how much she had enjoyed them – though it wasn't difficult to see where he had gotten the idea that they were, ''look, if the need for them arises-''
'''The need for them'?'' Milo asked, sitting up and leaning closer, wanting to hear more about it, clearly more interested now. He didn't count what had happened the night Andy and Lu got back together as a threesome, he hadn't been much of a participant in that after all, and the idea of them hadn't been brought up in way too long. He knew Lu might be slightly hesitant about them after what happened with Nick but he would be lying if he said he wasn't still interested. And the idea that Lu could possible feel a need for them certainly piqued his interest.
Lu huffed, the tone of his voice when he said that being a huge turn off. ''Wrong audience.'' She didn't need to know about any of his sexual fantasies and felt she had fulfilled enough of them for the time being.
''I was only kidding,'' Milo said with a slight smile. He could see she wasn't in the mood for any jokes, let alone sexual ones, ''sorry.'' He leaned back, ''no asking permission, got it.''
''Except,'' Lu said quickly, ''except if someone else becomes involved.'' She didn't plan on involving anyone else in their sex life ever again but didn't know what Milo had planned for the future. ''I don't plan on starting something with anyone else but if you are – just for the sake of being safe – I think we should talk about that then.''
''I don't think so.'' Milo said, not needing or even wanting another woman in his life. He could see the questioning look on Lu's face, ''I mean I don't want to see anyone else, I'm okay with talking about whatever needs to be talked about.''
''Okay.'' Lu said, glad that they wouldn't have to fuss with protection just so Milo could have some fun. ''And I think we should… discourage,'' it was the best word to use though she would've preferred straight up forbidding, ''Andy from pursuing anyone else.''
''You think she wants to?'' Milo asked skeptically. He knew were Lu's concerns were coming from but knew how much maintaining two relationships took out of Andy and wasn't too worried. ''I know you don't completely trust her after what happened with Dr Biancavilla, but if she wanted a relationship with him she would've started one when you two and she and I were broken up.''
Lu didn't feel like getting into all that once more. It felt like for a long time all they had talked about was that night – Andy apologizing and saying it was never gonna happen again, Lu being mad and hurt by all of it… now that they had somewhat moved past it she didn't feel like rehashing all of it with Milo. ''Let's just… let's talk about it and agree that us three, that's it. I don't want to ever have to deal with something like that again.''
''I'm with you on that.'' Lu narrowed her eyes at him, and he knew exactly why. He knew she only thought about the effect that night had had on her relationship with Andy, not his even though, aside from the effects that night had had on their relationship, he knew exactly what she was going through. Milo knew she wouldn't like his explanation though. ''What happened between you, Andy, and Nick isn't too dissimilar from how your relationship with Andy started.''
Lu looked down at her hands as she considered this, not wanting to accept that in a way he was right.
''Except she actually had feelings for you,'' Milo said. He could see how his words had affected her and wanted to make it clear that he didn't mean it that way; that he wasn't angry with her anymore and that he merely wanted to relief her worries about Andy and Nick. ''Andy doesn't love Nick. He was a way to pass the time when she wasn't seeing anyone, you have nothing to worry about.''
Lu didn't know if he actually knew as much as she did about how Andy and Nick even started seeing each other, everything they had done together. She had been there for the start of it, remembered what Andy had said about him word for word, at the time filled with jealousy that Andy wasn't saying those things about her. ''Why are you making excuses for her?''
''Why are you being so defensive?'' Milo immediately regretted those words. He knew he most likely would feel the same if he were in her shoes, because he had.
''Les is moving back to Philly.''
''And?''
''And she had a dream about him,'' Lu said, she had expected him to be more caught off guard by this, ''last night,'' she added.
''I strongly doubt you have anything to worry about.'' When he first started dating Andy he had had some concerns on if they had truly been over but had accepted it when she had reassured him they and their marriage were over. This wasn't enough for Lu and he knew it, ''we'll discuss it.''
''We're almost at the end.'' Lu said, looking at her list. She wanted to go back to sleep and was glad that so far Milo hadn't put up much of a fight even if he was invalidating some of her feelings. ''Of course we have told a bunch of people that we're together, but, if anyone asks, I'm just your roommate,'' she said, knowing that they needed a way to explain her living with a married couple without outing themselves to people who had no business knowing anything about what went on behind closed doors.
''You're okay with that?''
''I think it would be easiest.'' Lu preferred that they could be open about it with complete assurance that people would be accepting but that wasn't the world they lived in.
''Don't you think people would get suspicious?'' Milo asked, knowing that sooner or later he was going to get asked why a grown woman was living with them.
''Kayla lived here, no one questioned that.''
''Yes, but,'' Milo paused, wanting to bring this sensitively, ''Kayla is… younger, less established, didn't already live on her own for many years and raise a child.'' It was more socially acceptable to have a roommate when you're twenty-four and a resident as opposed to mid-thirties and a doctor who clearly makes enough money to live independently, and he knew other people would think the same thing.
''Would you rather explain to everyone the dynamics of all this?'' Lu asked, giving him a look. When he backed off she was relieved. Now came the hardest thing. ''Lastly, I wanna have an equal voice in family decisions-''
''You do.'' Milo said though doubting it the moment he had said it. There hadn't been any major decisions made since she had moved in so they hadn't exactly tested that theory but he figured that at least on most points she would get an equal say.
''Including-'' that wasn't the right word, ''especially, when it comes to the baby.''
''You want to be an equal parent?'' Milo asked. He remembered Andy mentioning something about the baby having two moms and hadn't said anything at the time. He was willing to facilitate their relationship to a certain level but he still felt that as the biological father his opinion on any baby-related decisions should outweigh hers.
Lu hesitated for a moment. He hadn't said no but he was clearly having doubts. ''It was Andy's idea, didn't she-''
''We talked about it,'' it hadn't been as long a discussion as it most likely should've been and he hadn't asked the questions that were now popping into his head, but she had hinted at it to him once or twice. ''I just didn't know how serious you were about it.''
''Well y'know, if I'm gonna be a part of this family I wanna be an actual part of this family,'' Lu said, ''if you can't agree to that then the rest of this is moot.''
''I didn't know that this was that important to you.'' Milo said, looking down at his hands. In his mind he was trying to come up with some kind of compromise but knew that Lu wouldn't quickly agree to any that he could come up with.
Lu thought about her period and how just because there had been some light spotting – which had freaked her out a bit even though she was a doctor and knew that that wasn't entirely uncommon during pregnancy – her period still hadn't actually come. ''Well it is now.'' She said quietly, wondering if she should tell Milo about what was going on.
''Now?''
Lu hesitated for a second, deciding he had a right to know. ''I think I might be pregnant.''
There was a moment of surprise before he recovered. ''Congratulations,'' he said, frowning when he saw her surprise. ''Have you told Julian?''
It had been hard enough to tell him about the possibility she might be pregnant, she hadn't remembered that he had no reason to suspect it was his. ''It's not his baby.'' She could see the wheels spinning as she stared intently at him, waiting for the moment he would get it.
''It can't be mine,'' Milo said, getting up from his chair, feeling panic set in as she stared at him unwaveringly. He looked at her for a few seconds, leaning on the back of the chair he had been sitting in. ''You and I never…''
''That night in my office, Andy went down on me with your…'' Lu moved her hand to her face, hoping he would get it.
''You're serious?'' Milo asked. Yes, technically it was possible but still. She couldn't be. There was no way that those smalls odds had actually… He forced himself to breathe. ''And you're sure?''
''No. I think I am, I just haven't taken a test yet,'' Lu said, feeling even worse now for bringing it up without being certain.
''What're you waiting for?'' Milo asked.
Lu remained quiet, not wanting to bring up how even if she was pregnant she wasn't sure she would actually want to carry the baby to term. ''Milo, I…'' she wasn't sure what to say.
''We have a pregnancy test in our bathroom I think,'' Milo said, standing back up straight, taking a few steps to the door.
Lu didn't know how to stop him. This wasn't how she wanted this to happen. If she did turn out to be pregnant she wanted to find out with Andy there, she wanted… ''Milo…''
''Lu, if this is happening, if you're carrying my child,'' Milo said, looking at her intently, ''I want to know.'' When she didn't move he sighed. ''Please.''
Lu closed her eyes for a second, feeling bad for him but knowing that he did ultimately have a right to know. She followed him upstairs, waiting in her bedroom as he went to retrieve a test from the bathroom he and Andy shared.
''Just sit down.'' She said to him as she took the test from him. What she had said earlier about staying out of each other's bedrooms was replaying in her mind as she watched him sit down on the edge of her bed, on her side which somehow made it worse. She paced back and forth for a second before finding the courage to actually go into the bathroom.
Milo watched her disappear, rubbing his hands on his pants as they were getting sweaty from nervousness. He had already accepted that the baby that he was having with Andy – the one that was now growing in her belly – was the only one he was ever going to have. It had been hard enough to talk Andy into having one and knew that even if they were able to have another one she wouldn't agree to it.
To now think that he might have a second child, with the last woman he would ever consider having a child with… The thought of another baby was exciting but the thought of having to co-parent it with Lu who he disagreed with on so many things… He didn't know what he wanted the result of the test to be.
He stood up when she finally reemerged from the bathroom, looking down at the test in her hands.
Lu looked up at Milo, opening her mouth to speak but for a few seconds nothing came out. ''I really thought…'' she started, swallowing hard, tears forming in her eyes.
Despite his many mixed emotions he could feel his heart breaking when he saw the pain on her face. ''Hey come here,'' he pulled her into his arms, rubbing her back. ''You're still going to become a mom – again – in a few months.''
''That kid's gonna have three parents, I thought it would be nice for them to have a brother or sister their own age.'' Lu whispered, wiping her face before pulling away, facing away from him. She was glad he was there, that she hadn't been alone for this, but it was difficult to be vulnerable with him.
Milo kept one arm around her. ''Are you okay?''
''Yeah, I'm fine. Just tired now,'' Lu said, throwing the test in the trashcan and wrapping her arms around herself. She just wanted to go to sleep now that she knew she wouldn't have to lie awake trying to decide what to do anymore. She just wished the test had been positive and she could have gone to sleep after deciding to keep it.
Milo looked at her, needing a few seconds to make up his mind. ''Come with me.''
Lu frowned, it taking her a moment to realize what he meant. ''Are you sure?''
He nodded, letting her walk in front as they walked through the hallway to the other side of the house where his and Andy's bedroom was located. Andy was deep asleep, hugging a pillow to her body with her hair splayed out on the pillow beneath her head.
Lu looked back at Milo to make sure he was still okay with this and she laid down next to Andy, wiping a stray strand of hair away from Andy's face who didn't seem to notice. The bed dipped down when Milo laid down as well, one arm immediately around Andy and asleep within seconds. It wasn't until she heard his breathing evening out as he fell deeper asleep that she finally let a few tears fall.
Yeah, it's common for women to spot a little during pregnancy and she had hoped that that was all it was; that her slight freak out about it was completely unjustified because everything was alright. And it was completely unjustified, just for the wrong reason.
