"You guys certainly made yourselves at home." I said as I walked around the research lab. There were trinkets lying everywhere I looked, along with books and journals scattered about haphazardly.
"You would think they would have provided us somewhere to stay closer to the Guardian Research Lab." Robbie muttered. The old building built at the northern end of the Tanagar Canyon had been nicknamed the Guardian Research Lab as that was where most of the guardians now resided.
"I believe the idea was you would be most at home in a laboratory, so my father provided you with one of our institutes to stay in as well as conduct research and collaborate with our other scientists." I explained to Robbie for what felt like the 100th time. There was a set of buildings not too far from the castle, located in the Hyrule Fields, where all our scientists conducted research. Purah and Robbie had been given one of the smaller buildings to work in and a few guardians had been deposited outside the building for them to study and work on when they weren't at their main lab. Robbie had complained, whereas Purah seemed rather pleased with all the pleasantries. She certainly must have impressed my father with the guardians as he seemed willing to offer her and Robbie anything they needed. That or she had completely terrified him with the guardian's power.
I had yet to go to the revamped Guardian Research facility, but had been to the Hylian Research Institute many times. Although I hardly recognized the lab, now that Purah and Robbie had staked their claim on it. So many strange mechanical objects laid around, whereas I was used to chemicals, flasks, beakers, cell cultures, petri dishes… things of a biological and chemical nature.
"And you both have horses at your disposal for travel. It shouldn't take long at all to get there." I added.
"Ugh, horses." Robbie shook his head in dismay. "I should have brought the Master Cycle."
"Oh quit whining." Purah spoke up, "It's not that bad at all. Besides, this lab is way nicer than yours. And the bed is much comfier too! I'd say the little jaunt over to the Guardian Lab is worth it for everything else we get. And don't touch that Impa." Purah called to her sister who was inspecting what looked like a chain wrapped around a metal disk.
"What is it?" She asked as she retracted her hand.
Purah shrugged, "Don't know. It's Robbie's."
"Pff." Robbie responded, waving his hands, "I'll have you know it's going to be a revolutionary invention. A chain with the power to cut through anything! Be it wood or rock or monsters!"
Impa narrowed her eyes at the object and took a step back. "I'm not sure how a chain is supposed to do that, but I think I'll avoid it."
"It's perfectly safe." Robbie assured, "As long as you're on the back end of it."
I shook my head. "You two better not forget about the dinner tonight. It's important you're both there." I gave pointed looks to both Robbie and Purah. The reason Impa and I had come to visit them was to remind them of the dinner tonight.
"Are you kidding?" Purah laughed, "I wouldn't miss that for the world. For once in my life I can wine and dine like royalty. Although I hope you aren't expecting Robbie to wear anything fancy."
"I'm a scientist." Robbie huffed in defense.
"Just put on some dark pants and a white shirt." I kneaded my forehead. "That should suffice."
Robbie pointed a finger at Purah. "And you're one to talk. I've never seen you wear anything fancy."
"True, Robbie. But you see, I have a sister who happens to be the same size as me… so I will be borrowing one of her dresses." Purah cackled.
Robbie turned around, grumbling to himself. "I'm sure it won't matter what you're wearing as long as you look presentable." I tried to diffuse the situation. "Besides, there will be far more important matters to discuss."
"Are you kidding?" Impa jumped in, "I'm all for seeing who's wearing what."
"You do realize this isn't a ball." I told her. "It's just going to be us, your father, the King, the champions, and Link. Half the people there don't know what dress attire is."
Impa laughed, "That's exactly why I'm all for it! It's going to be the oddest combination."
"Don't get carried away." I warned her, but she waved me off.
"Oh, I'm just having a little fun is all." Impa assured.
Turning back to Purah and Robbie, I said, "Well, I think Impa and I will be off. I still have some things to tend to before dinner. I mainly wanted to make sure to remind both of you to be on time tonight!"
Purah came over and patted my shoulder, "Don't worry, Zelda. I'll make sure both Robbie and I are there on time. And that he's dressed appropriately!"
"Thanks." I breathed a sigh of relief.
Impa and I bid farewell to the two researchers and made our way back to the castle. "Do you think Link is back yet?" She mused.
"Hopefully." I said, "Although knowing him he may end up cutting it close."
"Are you excited to see him?" She asked. We hadn't talked much about him since our conversation a few nights ago.
"I don't know." I replied, looking down at my hands. "It will be nice to see him, but I'm nervous too. Although I suppose we really won't have much time to talk at the dinner."
"That's understandable." Impa reassured, "To be nervous."
"Is it?" I asked, "It's not like anything is going to happen at the dinner. Just a bunch of discussion. And then Link will be off to the Lost Woods."
"Right." Impa nodded, "The Master Sword."
I had told Impa about that during our sleepover, confiding in her that I still felt bad since it was my fault Link had to do this extra training. But as always, Impa was there to reassure me and to not be so hard on myself.
"And then who knows what's going to happen." Thinking about the future made me anxious. For several months I had merely focused on finding the champions, but now that they were found, the focus shifted to defeating Calamity Ganon which seemed ambiguous. There was no idea as to when he would come, so how did you plan for something that could happen tomorrow or a year from now?
"We'll figure it out Zelda." Impa gave me a bright smile which eased the queasiness in my stomach. "Come on, let's head back to your room and we can spend the rest of the day getting ready."
"It's not going to take us hours to get ready." I laughed.
"We can take our time. Grab some snacks." Impa proposed.
"Alright." I said. "I see there is no winning this."
"Exactly!" Impa beamed, "Now, onwards to the kitchen!"
I laughed as I followed a determined Impa, whose love for snacks rivaled my love for bread.
"Don't you have any other dresses besides that?" Impa asked as I slipped into my traditional formal wear, which was a navy blue and white dress with gold embellishments.
"Believe it or not, but this is actually my only formal dress. The others are for more casual occasions." I said as I began to weave a braid through the locks around my forehead.
"That's a little sad considering you're a Princess." Impa said as she pulled on a beautiful crimson dress.
I shrugged, pinning the braids in place so they created a nice frame around my face. "It's not like I wear it that often. Besides, I really like it."
"It is gorgeous, but I would expect you to have more options." Impa tied half of her hair up, pinning it with the chopsticks I had given her.
"And then I'd never be able to decide what to wear." I replied, pondering the outcome. "This is much easier."
Impa chuckled. "That's a fair point. I never thought about that."
Impa and I quickly finished up in my room and then began to make our way down to the dining hall where the dinner was being held. As we entered, Vorel, Impa's father, was already there as well as Urbosa. There was staff milling about, placing silverware and plates on the table.
Impa and I walked over to Urbosa and Vorel, who were chatting idly. Seeing us approach, the two stopped and smiled. "Impa. Zelda." Urbosa greeted with a nod.
"Why, what fine young ladies." Vorel said and I stepped in for a quick hug.
"It is so nice to see you, Vorel." He was dressed in black pants and a matching jacket with a red shirt underneath. His white hair was down and framed his face.
"It seems your journey was a success. Impa told me you had quite the adventure." Vorel said, his eyes turning to his daughter.
"You can say that again." Urbosa grinned. She was in a beautiful bright green dress that had slits on either side. A golden belt, bracers, and necklace completed the outfit. Her hair was held in a high pony as usual and she had her traditional, hooped earrings on. "Fighting Yiga and monsters all the while trying to save Hyrule."
Vorel's face darkened. "The Yiga, you say?" He shook his head, "After all these years they still linger."
"You know about the Yiga?" Urbosa stated.
"Indeed." Vorel nodded. "In fact they are Sheikah, like myself. Long ago, a group of Sheikah defected from the main clan. They did not like how the Sheikah were shunned because of our technical prowess. So they rebelled against Hyrule and swore allegiance to Calamity Ganon. Why they would ally themselves with something so vile, I do not know. Perhaps it is for revenge, but I'm sure they must realize that that beast would never treat them justly."
"Hatred can blind." Urbosa stated knowingly. "Or perhaps the depths of their abhorrence is so deep, all they care about is seeing the rest of us burn, even if they burn with us."
I looked down. "I did not realize. If only we could reach a resolution with them peacefully."
Vorel shook his head. "In the past, my ancestors tried to reason with them - make amends. There is no peaceful resolution now. The path they have chosen has been ingrained into them. They will blindly follow, thinking it is the only way."
"That is a shame." I stated.
Vorel's face had hardened. "They chose their path. Now it is time for us to act."
"Well, look at that. We aren't the last ones here!" All of us turned to look to see Purah and Robbie enter the dining hall… or more like Purah drag Robbie into the room.
Vorel's face softened upon seeing his oldest child. "Purah." He walked over to her to give her a quick hug. "It feels as if I never see you any more."
"Sorry Dad." Purah gave a big grin, "Time just slips away. And Robbie and I are going to be pretty busy for a while. Have to get to work on saving Hyrule."
Vorel chuckled. "Yes, you have an important role to play." His eyes shifted to Robbie. "It is nice to see you again Robbie. I hope things are going well in Akkala."
Robbie gave a grunt. "Funding has never been better."
"You can say that again!" Purah pulled on Robbie's arm, which he yanked free and scowled at Purah.
"Robbie, Purah." I walked over to greet them. "I'm glad both of you are here." Purah was wearing a very pretty deep blue dress with long sleeves and a V-neck. Her hair was also pinned up in a bun. Robbie had even cleaned up nicely, wearing navy pants, and a heather gray tunic with silver trim. His hair was as unruly as ever though. "I'm not used to seeing you both look so formal."
"It is a bit strange, isn't it?" Purah smiled. "Took the rest of the day to find Robbie some formal clothing."
As Impa walked over to join us, Mipha and Daruk entered the room, both casually talking. Quickly I left the Sheikahs to go over and greet them. Daruk was dressed similarly to how he would dress for a Goron festival: Loud and colorful. He wore a bright red kilt with gold striped and had an assortment of necklaces and bangles around his neck and wrists. Mipha on the other hand was dressed much more modestly with a pretty ivory shawl draped over her shoulders which was held in place with a blue pendant. A gold and blue belt adorned her waist.
"Zelda!" Daruk boomed upon seeing me. "You look gorgeous!" He picked me up in a fierce hug.
"Thanks… Daruk." I wheezed out when he put me down, my lungs gasping for air. I glanced over at Mipha and gave a small wave. "How is Sidon?"
"He's perfectly fine." Mipha replied cordially. "Although he does keep asking when you and Link will visit again."
"Ah, looks like Urbosa is here." Daruk said as he spotted the fiery Gerudo chief.
"Come." I beckoned Daruk and Mipha. "I should introduce all of you." Quickly the three of us joined Urbosa and I made introductions, even though Urbosa and Daruk already knew each other.
"So this is the Zora Champion." Urbosa said, surveying the sweet Zora Princess. "I look forward to working with you, Mipha."
"As do I." Mipha gave a brief nod. "And the same to you Daruk."
Daruk laughed, "A fine looking bunch we make! Now to meet this Rito Champion. Wonder where he is." Daruk surveyed the room, searching for any Rito present.
As if on cue, Revali walked through the door, Link with him. Revali was talking to Link while Link quietly listened. As they entered the dining hall, my eyes went straight to Link, who was in black trousers and a pine green tunic with brown trim. His hair was pulled back as normal, leaving the shorter strands to hang around his face and neck. As if sensing my eyes on him, Link turned and then his eyes met mine. A jolt of electricity went through me and for a mere second it felt like everything else ceased to exist… There was just Link.
Swallowing, I turned back to the three champions next to me and pointed at Revali, "There is your Rito Champion. Let me fetch him." With that I hastily made my way over to Revali and Link, my stomach feeling as if it was full of butterflies.
"Revali." I greeted as I approached him, making him turn his attention to me. Revali didn't look much different than when I had seen him last. His attire was similar, although now he wore a black shirt instead of the normal breastplate. He also had a purple scarf wrapped around his neck.
A smile played at his beak as our eyes locked. "Well, looks like the Princess managed to stay alive."
I rolled my eyes, "It wasn't that bad. Just a few exploding mountains and lynel attacks."
Revali's eyes widened in curiosity, "Please do go on. I need to hear how you managed to get yourself into such situations."
"I'll tell you later. I'd like to introduce you to the other champions." I then turned to Link, my heart rate increasing as I met his gaze. "It's nice to see you again, Link." I started, my body feeling all fluttery. "I hope you enjoyed your time with your family."
Link nodded in response, but there was a slight smile on his face, letting me know he did indeed enjoy his time with his family. Revali brought a winged-hand up to his face, "Yes, I suppose it is time to meet the other champions. I can only pray to Hylia they are as worthy of the title as me."
I was about to reply to Revali, however the words stuck in my throat as I noticed the imprint of a white bird on the back of Revali's winged hand. "You have a mark now." I said.
Revali brought his hand down to look at the imprint of a white bird against the blue of his feathers. "Yeah. Slowly started to show up after you and Link left. Figured it had to do with my power. Birds and Air go wing and wing."
"That's fair. If only the others made as much sense." I replied, still staring at his winged-hand.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Revali inquired.
"Just that none of the other animals really go with their power. You'll see." I said before he could ask anything else. It would be easiest to explain once they were all together. Turning back to Link, I said, "Why don't you come with us?"
Link nodded and then Revali, Link, and I joined the other three. Once more I introduced everyone and pleasantries were exchanged. Impa joined us, curious to see who all the others were, and eventually I found myself constantly introducing everyone to each other. When that chore was completed, everyone was left to mingle while we awaited my father.
I let out a relieved sigh, happy to see everyone getting along. This would be the main team that would lead the resistance against Calamity Ganon. It was crucial we all worked together.
"Zelda?" Suddenly I found Link next to me.
"Oo-oh. Hi Link." I said, startled by his appearance.
There was an awkward silence between us, even though the room was filled with chatter. "How have you been?"
I quickly latched onto his words, happy to have something I could talk about. "I've been busy. But it's nice seeing progress. And I feel happy seeing everyone here in this room now. But also scared. This feels like the turning point."
Link nodded, "I get that."
I held up a finger, remembering the Hylian Shield I had hidden in my room. "That reminds me, I have something for you. I have no idea if you'll like it, but I thought you might find it useful. If you have time, I would like to give it to you before you leave."
Link blinked at me in response. Then he gave a nervous grin and scratched the back of his neck, "I actually have something for you too."
I widened my eyes, "You do?"
Before I could probe further, my father, King Rhoam stepped into the room. Several royal guards were with him and my father quickly made his presence known. His voice boomed out over the room. "Greetings! Thank you all for joining my daughter and I tonight. She has worked very hard to gather you all here." His praise surprised me. "As you are all aware, the threat of Calamity Ganon looms on the horizon. Tonight we will finally begin forming a plan to dispose of such a corrupt being. But before that, I'd like to share a meal with all of you. The kitchen staff has worked very hard to create a menu pleasing all palettes. While the staff brings out the food, my daughter has prepared a song for us. Let us all listen and then we can feast."
"Here, here!" Several cheers went up, Daruk being the loudest.
"Well that's my cue." I gave Link a small wave and then walked to the far end of the room. There was a violin sitting off to the side and I gingerly picked it up. Turning back to the crowd, I said, "I prepared something a little different than normal. It's not a classic or a song many of you will recognize. In fact its a spin on a song my mother once sang to me. I wish to honor her memory by playing it."
I breathed a deep sigh, then nestled the violin between my chin and shoulder and brought the violin bow up in an elegant arch. I held the bow just above the strings, my nerves getting the better of me.
It's alright. I told myself. Just play. As if no one is watching.
Closing my eyes I took one more deep breath and then my bow lowered, touching the strings. A calm and lovely melody began to play, filling the room. Gradually it began to build into a crescendo. I felt my nervousness fade away, as if everything around me was slipping away until I was somewhere else. My mother's voice filled my ears, her lovely voice singing the bittersweet lyrics… a song about everlasting love.
Images of my mother flashed through my mind: her smiling face, her gentle eyes, her arms holding me… I swayed to the music as I played, the music fading back now, so quiet - like a serene embrace that lingered in the room.
Still my mother's voice echoed in my head.
And once more the song grew into a crescendo, fierce yet lovely. Sadness swelled inside me but even greater than that was love. Love for my mother.
Suddenly my feet began to move while I played, until I found myself on the balcony, my eyes looking up at the night sky littered with stars. The need to be touched by the wind, to have my song echo out burst forth. Somewhere I hoped my mother heard my song. That she knew I was playing for her… just as she used to play for me.
Her voice continued to ring out in my mind, as if she was right besides me, singing along as I played. Everything had vanished, it was just me playing along to the ghost of my mother's voice. I had never put so much emotion into a song, as if I was baring it all for everyone to see. It was terrifying, but liberating at the same time. The twangs on the string rang out, beautiful and sorrowful, coming finally to one last sweet note as my mother's voice sang the last lyric.
The last notes slowly died off, softly reverberating out into the night. I stood frozen for a moment, my eyes staring up at the dark sky.
For the first time in a long time, I felt strangely at peace. I lowered the violin and bow, a gentle breeze brushing past me. There was a moment's pause and then behind me a wave of clapping began,
I turned around, momentarily surprised to see everyone standing behind me. I had forgotten they were all there listening. Urbosa and Daruk both had tears running down their cheeks. Mipha and Vorel looked misty-eyes, while Purah and Impa were holding hands, a tear or two falling softly from their eyes. Robbie and Revali were much more composed, but they both looked as if they had appreciated the beauty of the song.
And Link, he was staring at me in a way I had never seen before. I wasn't sure how to interpret it. Before I could contemplate it further, my eyes drifted to my father, whose face appeared as rough as ever, but it looked like for but a second there was a tear in his eye. However his hand came up to scratch his forehead and then the look was gone.
"That was beautiful, Little Bird." Urbosa had come up to me and wrapped me in a secure hug. "For a moment, I swore I saw your mother singing by your side." I hugged Urbosa back.
"I felt her." I whispered.
"So did I." Urbosa murmured. After a moment she pulled back and brought a hand up to my face, wiping away tears I had no idea where even there.
"Absolutely wonderful!" Daruk said and then I found myself in his big burly arms too.
"I had no idea you could play so marvelously." Mipha's voice said and I turned my head to see her standing next to Urbosa.
Daruk set me down. "It's been awhile since I've played." I stated.
"It doesn't sound like it." Daruk laughed.
"Zelda's mother was an amazing violinist. She taught Zelda to play when she was very young. Like her mother, Zelda's a natural." Urbosa informed.
"I would expect no less than perfection from my rival." Revali's voice suddenly came and I found him next to me. "Almost as astounding as the Rito flutists."
I smiled knowing that was the best complement I'd get from Revali. "I'm glad everyone enjoyed it…. I was uncertain at first… playing it." I admitted.
"I think everyone more than enjoyed it." Impa was suddenly next to me, along with Purah, Robbie, and Vorel. Impa hugged me. "You did splendidly!"
"Agreed!" Purah voiced.
Robbie nodded, "It was exceptional, I will admit."
Vorel laughed, slapping Robbie on the shoulder in the process. "Beyond exceptional. I'm so glad I was able to hear you play, Zelda."
"Thank you everyone." I motioned towards the table piled high with delectable food. "Come, let's talk more at the table. I find myself quite hungry and would love to share a meal with all of you."
"Agreed!" Daruk boasted as the others nodded. Quickly we filed back into the dining hall. I detoured a moment to put the violin and bow away, finding Link had come with me.
"Hey." I said, feeling abashed now.
"Hey." Link scratched the back of his head. "That was good. Really good." Link said, looking to the side.
"Thanks." I said, feeling nervous now. "Come on, I bet you're hungry." I began to walk past him, but Link's hand wrapped around my wrist stopping me. Our eyes met, so close.
Realizing what he had done, Link dropped my hand and took a step away. "Sorry." He shook his head. "I just wanted to say, she heard it. Your mother. She heard you play for her."
I was not expecting his words, but they warmed my heart. "Thanks Link." Before I could think better, I stepped in and gave him a hug. His body tensed for a moment, but then he returned the hug, his touch gentle.
I pulled away, knowing if I hugged him any longer it would look like more than a friendly hug. Smiling at Link, I beckoned him to follow me. "Come let's eat. If you don't hurry, you'll end up sitting next to Revali."
Link chuckled at this.
Soon we were all seated around the table, plates brimming with delicious food. My father sat at the head of the table, while I sat next to him and Vorel sat across from me. Next to me was Urbosa and then Daruk. Everyone dived into their food, appreciative of the wondrous meal the kitchen staff had prepared. Idle chatter flitted across the table. My father conversed with Vorel and Purah who sat next to Vorel, while I talked with Urbosa and Daruk. Everyone seemed lost in conversation, talking about trifle things, although we had all come here to discuss much more serious matters.
As we finished our food several servants began to clear away the table. While they did this, another staff member came in and handed something to my father. Instead of leaving, the maid stood behind my father's chair, awaiting further instruction.
Clearing his throat, everyone stopped talking and turned to look at the King. "I hope dinner was to everyone's liking." My father started, "My staff has also prepared dessert for us all, but while we are waiting, I think it is time to start discussing why we all came here tonight." My father motioned to me. "Zelda set out on a journey almost five months ago to corral the clans together as well as to find suitable champions in our efforts to prepare for Calamity Ganon's return. After talking with my daughter, it is almost certain Calamity Ganon will return. Now we must come together and plan our defense against him. In doing this, four champions have been selected, as well as a Hero and two researchers that will be paramount in our efforts." Father pointed to Purah and Robbie. "First is two Sheikah researchers, Purah and Robbie of the Sheikah Clan. They have already contributed greatly to our preparative efforts with their research on ancient technology they call guardians.." My father then motioned towards the champions. "Next are our champions. One from each of the remaining clans: Urbosa of the Gerudo; Daruk of the Gorons; Revali of the Rito; and Mipha of the Zora." My father now held up a part of what the servant handed him earlier. "To announce their titles as champions, I had Zelda make each one of them a garment." He now handed the bright blue garments to the maid behind him and she quickly went around the table, handing the specific garment to the correct champion.
As Urbosa took hers, she gave me a curious look, knowing full well my sewing skills were lacking. Leaning in closer to her, I whispered, "I had help."
Urbosa smirked and held in a laugh.
Once all the champions received their clothes, my father continued. "And lastly is the Hero who possesses the Sword that Seals the Darkness, Link. He is an extraordinary warrior and together with that sword, he will lead us through this coming war. He too shall wear a customary garment." Father held up the tunic and the maid quickly delivered it to him.
By this point the kitchen staff had begun to decorate the table with an array of desserts. Unable to stop myself, I grabbed a scrumptious looking cookie, which then prompted everyone else to hastily grab a dessert for themselves.
"Now that we have formal introductions over, I think we can get down to the real business." Urbosa said and then bit into a slice of frosted cake.
"Agreed." Vorel nodded. "But wear to begin? As far as I know there isn't much to go off of? We don't even know how long we have until Calamity Ganon returns."
"That is true." I said. "And that does make things more difficult. I think the best way to gauge how close his return is getting is by the frequency and type of monsters we may come across. Over the course of my journey, the monsters I encountered began to increase in amount and power. When we start seeing more and more hordes of monsters or very powerful monsters in places they normally aren't, such as hinoxes, wizzrobes, and lynels, we can assume Calamity Ganon's return is close at hand. Thus I still think we have some time. Several months at least. But this is obviously conjecture."
"I'd believe your estimate over most others." Purah jumped in. "But in regards to preparations, Robbie and I will be heading a research team that will continue to expand our knowledge on guardians. We hope to have them functional on a large scale in two to three months."
"Guardians?" Daruk asked, his eyebrows kneading together. And that was all Purah needed to launch herself into a full on explanation of what the guardians were.
After several minutes, Vorel cut his oldest daughter off, "I think they understand the gist of it, Purah." The glazed over expression of most people at the table was proof enough. "I think you and Robbie have an excellent plan of attack. As for the Sheikah, we have begun war training. Following this meeting, I think joint training would be a good idea, which is something I discussed with King Rhoam."
"Agreed." Urbosa spoke up. "I have also talked with Rhoam about this. I think today we can finally work out a schedule."
"And we can use the coliseum as a joint training base." I proposed. "We don't have a lot of extra room here or at the military camp, but the coliseum is completely open. We could have a force from each clan come and train for a month. After the month is up, a new force will replace them so everyone becomes familiar with the fighting techniques of the other clans."
"Not a bad plan." My father mused, stroking his beard. His encouraging words made me smile softly. "And there is always the Akkala citadel. If we need more room, we can have some of the other clans' armies go there."
"That's just a quick gaunt over the mountain for us." Daruk grinned. "We'd be happy to have a permanent Goron force take residence up there."
"That's not a bad suggestion." Mipha said, her voice much fainter than everyone else's. "We could have permanent forces from different clans positioned at every major town. That way the soldiers could even develop joint defenses using the land and the strengths of different clans."
"That's an excellent idea!" Vorel brought his fist up in excitement. "That would enable more permanent defense strategies."
"True." Revali stated, "However not every place has the room to house additional soldiers…. And some regions are less hospitable."
"Rito Village doesn't have a lot of excess room." I said, agreeing with Revali, "However the stables next to Rito Village could suffice. And it isn't that far a walk from the Flight Range where you train."
Revali gave a nod, "Yes, that would be more feasible."
"The Eldin region is a very harsh environment, but I still think we could send some soldiers there. The underground quarters would provide some reprieve and there is a stable just before the Maw of Death Mountain they could stay at if they needed a longer break." I addressed Revali's other point.
"The Gerudo are used to the heat." Urbosa said. "I can send some of my warriors up to Eldin. I'm sure some of them will jump at the chance."
"Just remember to bring plenty of fireproof elixirs." I warned her. "And nothing wooden!"
Urbosa laughed. "We prefer steel swords anyways."
"Well this sounds like a promising plan." Vorel said. "We can devise a concrete schedule about who will be stationed where and when."
"We'll have to call upon the other leaders or generals of the clans." My father said. "Before we can devise this schedule."
"I can send for Azo first thing in the morning." Revali announced.
"I can do the same with Sergeant Seggin." Mipha followed. "It shouldn't take him long to get here at all."
"No worries here." Daruk stroked his beard, "Donos has left the military planning to me."
"Is there anyone else we need to call upon then?" My father asked.
I looked around the room, making sure we weren't forgetting anyone. We would have to notify our Captain but it would be wise to include those in Akkala too. "Perhaps we should send for Captain Cyprian too." I told my father.
"Yes, that would be best. He should know of these affairs . Ad Captain Libo can handle affairs at the training camp once we discuss with him." Captain Libo was in charge of the military at the castle.
"While all this joint training is important, we should also figure out how we plan to fortify our defenses." Urbosa said. She truly did think of everything when it came to battle and war. "The Gerudo have measures in place, but I fear we will see monsters in numbers we have never seen before. We must make sure our strongholds will last the onslaught."
"Yes, that is true." Vorel mused.
Daruk let out a chuckle. "I'd like to see 'em get through Death Mountain territory unscathed."
"Rito Village is also protected. They can only attack us from one direction." Revali added confidentally.
"Kakariko Village has the protection of the mountains… and I know Zora's Domain is nestled in the midst of Lake Ruto." Vorel spoke, deep in thought, "Still, monsters can be quite ingenious when they need to be. Lizalfos can swim and climb… wizzrobes can fly to an extent… Hinoxes can throw large boulders to extraordinary lengths…. And no one can shoot as far as a lynel."
Revali scoffed at the last comment.
"Vorel is right." Urbosa said, "While out towns have some inherent protection, we can not assume it will be enough. We need to put in further measures. Even Gerudo Town, with our strong barricades and harsh weather, I do not know if it will be enough to keep the enemy out."
"More things to discuss." Mipha sighed, "Perhaps this too is better saved for when our military leaders arrive. They will know more about proper defense than I."
Revali huffed, "Only because it's formality I will wait. I know just as much as Azo about our defenses."
"Well then." Urbosa folded her arms, "That leaves one last matter." She looked over at me. "The Yiga."
Vorel's eyes narrowed.
"They need to be dealt with and swiftly." Urbosa said.
"I concur." I agreed with Urbosa. "The Yiga attacked me while I was in Gerudo. They clearly want me dead. Additionally Link and I ran into them again while in the Woodland region. They must have disguised groups all over Hyrule, collecting information and thwarting our efforts to stop Calamity Ganon's return. We need to deal with them."
"Don't have to tell me twice." Daruk grinned, "Finally an actual opponent we can deal with."
"Yes, it does make sense to take care of them now. Before our attentions are grabbed to other fronts." Vorel nodded. "Do we know their base of operation?"
"In Karusa Valley. Northwest of Gerudo Town. My warriors have staged several assaults thus far, but nothing big enough to defeat them." Urbosa explained.
Vorel nodded. "I can send a group of my ninjas to your aid. They are our fellow Sheikah; I can not help but feel slightly responsible."
"Every clan has bad eggs." Urbosa consoled.
"I can probably send a small group of Gorons down there too." Daruk said.
"And the Hylian military will help." I said and then glanced at Father who nodded.
"Yes. It is wise to take out the Yiga Clan before they become an even bigger problem." My father agreed. "We can plan when once our generals are here."
The others all nodded in resolution. A serious tone had claimed the room, yet although everyone's faces had hardened, they were filled with determination and resolve.
"One more thing I should mention before we conclude." I spoke up, drawing all eyes to me. "Link will be out of commission for a month or so. He must return to where he first found the Master Sword to unlock its full power. This is paramount in defeating Calamity Ganon."
"Yes, such a great loss." Revali muttered sarcastically.
Ignoring Revali's comment, I continued, "But we should be able to continue with our plans while Link is away."
"Of course." Vorel stated and the others nodded in confirmation.
"Looks like you guys sorted everything out." Impa finally spoke as she reached her hand out to grab another pastry.
"It would seem so." Mipha replied.
"Progress." Purah smiled. "And speaking of progress, Robbie and I should get back to the lab."
"I understand. Thank you for joining us." I thanked the two researchers. "And don't work yourselves too hard! Sleep every now and then!"
Purah waved me off as she grabbed several more cookies and Robbie grabbed another slice of cake. With that the two scientists were gone.
"I should be leaving as well." Mipha rose from the table. "I must send word to Seggin and my Father."
I rose too and went over to Mipha. "Thank you so much for coming, Mipha." We gave each other a quick hug and then she departed.
"I will take my leave now too." Revali said, who appeared besides me. "Although, perhaps tomorrow you'd be interested in some training?"
I arched an eyebrow, "Afraid I've gotten rusty?"
"I should hope not. There'd be not point in training with you then."
I gave a slight giggle, "I can assure you I have not. Tomorrow afternoon then?"
Revali nodded. "Don't be late." With that, the Rito left.
Walking back to the table, I found my father talking to two maids, who were beginning to clear the table once more. Vorel, Daruk, and Urbosa were lost in conversation, and Impa had moved to sit over by Link, trying to coax him into conversation.
Good luck with that, Impa. I thought. Even though he was much more talkative with me, whenever we were around people he did not know well or in a formal situation, Link's silent persona took over.
Coming to his rescue, I sat next to Impa, "Hopefully that didn't bore you too much."
Impa let out an exaggerated sigh, "I suppose this is a taste as to what I have to look forward to when I'm leader of the Sheikah."
"It's not so bad…" I gave a meek smile.
Impa narrowed her eyes at me. "All you do is complain about your royal responsibilities."
"That's not true." I folded my arms. "I complain about other things."
Impa laughed, "You sure do. I may go deaf from it." Impa reached for a glazed pastry. I followed suit and grabbed a pastry with wildberry jam.
"Careful, Princess." Impa warned me. "Can't ruin that girlish figure of yours."
I elbowed her, "You're one to talk." I pointed at her as she stuffed her face with fried dough.
Impa smiled as she chewed and once she swallowed she said, "Eh, I'll burn it off in training."
"And I won't?" I poked her and she gave a snort.
"It was a joke, your Highness." She gave a mock bow.
I rolled my eyes at her. "You're terrible." My eyes went to Link, who was watching our exchange. Impa, seeing where I was looking, grinned.
"So who's going to look after you while Link is away, Zee?" Impa inhaled the rest of her pastry.
I shrugged, my eyes meeting Link's. He too seemed curious as to who would be taking his place. "I'm not sure." I said truthfully. "Since it's only temporary, the members of the Royal Guard will likely alternate turns."
"Yeah, but you're going to go to Gerudo, aren't you?" Impa pressed. "If I know you, you won't sit this out."
"Perhaps Urbosa will assign me several Gerudo guards. That way I won't have to worry about accommodations for any male guards I have."
"Oh yeah. No men." Impa glanced at Link. "Where did you stay while in Gerudo?"
Leaning in close to Impa, I whispered in her ear, "Urbosa snuck him into the Palace. But don't tell anyone."
Impa's eyes grew wide. "Seriously?" She looked back and forth between Link and I. "Damn, go Urbosa."
"She is pretty amazing." Our eyes shifted to the three adults still deep in conversation. "Hey Impa?"
"Yes?" She replied absently.
"Want to have a sleepover again?" For some reason I didn't want to be alone tonight.
"Only if you make more of that drink." Impa smiled.
"I can do that."
"Impa!" We turned to see Vorel waving Impa over. "Come, it is getting late. We should return to our rooms."
"I'm going to stay with Zelda tonight." Impa called back.
Vorel nodded. "Very well. But I want you up bright and early to join me for breakfast with Duke Rassol."
Impa groaned. "Politics."
"Yep, you'll have lots of that to look forward to." I patted her reassuringly on the back.
"I'll meet you in your room." Impa said as she stood up. "I'm going to change."
"No rush. I still have to finish up here." I told her and then we waved goodbye. Then Impa and her father exited the dining hall.
Leaving Link, I walked over to Urbosa and Daruk, who looked to be finishing up their conversation. "Leaving?" I asked.
"Yes, Little Bird." Urbosa said. "Despite the severity of the conversation, it was nice spending the evening with everyone."
"Great company and great food! What's not to enjoy?" Daruk boasted. "Next time we have such a dinner will be in celebration of our victory."
I nodded, "I hope so."
"Goodnight, Little Bird. We will talk soon." Urbosa gave me a quick hug.
"Yes, perhaps for tea again!" Daruk added and then wrapped both Urbosa and I in a strong hug. When he released us, both Urbosa and I had to gasp for breath.
"Goodnight Daruk. Goodnight Urbosa." And then the Goron and the Gerudo were gone. I looked around the room for my father to tell him I was leaving. However there was no trace of him. I frowned. I would have at least expected him to bid his guests farewell rather than sneak off on his own. Perhaps he thought I had that covered.
"Zelda?"
I turned to find Link standing next to me. "Oh, Link!" I shook my head. "I was looking for my father, but apparently he already left." Link merely nodded. "I guess I'll be heading back to my room so I'm there before Impa arrives. When are you planning on leaving?"
"Not tomorrow but the next day." Link answered.
"Early?" I asked hesitantly.
Link smiled, "I'll leave late morning. If it's alright with you, I'd like to see you once more before I go."
I nodded, "Yes, I'd like that to. I can give you the gift I have."
Link nodded, "Same."
"It's a plan then." I stated firmly, "I shall see you then, Link." I gave a little wave and Link dipped his head in return.
"Goodnight Zelda. Or is it Zee?" He asked with a slight smirk.
"Oh!" I said, laughing nervously as I didn't expect his question. "That's Impa's nickname for me. But if you wish, you can call me Zee too. I don't mind."
Link's hand was suddenly on my shoulder, causing me to look up, where I found his face in front of mine. His blue orbs met mine, so deep I felt as if I could get lost in them. "Goodnight Zee. I'll see you later." And then his hand dropped from my shoulder and he walked past me, leaving the dining hall. I watched his form retreat from the room and then disappear into the hallway. I placed a hand to my chest, feeling my fluttering heart.
"Goodnight, Link." I whispered to empty air.
This chapter is more building things up and planning. I know it's not as exciting as other chapters, but I have to take a little time to set things up. Cause once we get past this, things will start rolling… There will be a few more chapters of setting stuff up (dabbled with a little action). Also wanted to take more time to get to know the other characters more so these chapters are important (at least I think so).
Also, in regards to the song Zelda played. In a sense this is her starting to heal. She never really moved on from her mother's death and has been stuck for years… I haven't come outright and said this, but you can probably deduce it from Zelda's feelings/what other people have said, but Zelda's mom played the violin and taught Zelda. Over the years Zelda stopped playing it/avoided it because it reminded her of her mother. This little arch was showing that Zelda is starting to heal. She's willing to play the violin again. Her view is changing rather than being something that brings up painful memories, it's a way to remember and honor her mother. That is what I was trying to accomplish with that. I did have a specific song I referenced, and in the original version of the chapter, I did incorporate a few lyrics (like 4 or so lines) where they seemed fitting. However I think (from what I saw online) fanfiction doesn't allow song lyrics anymore (I remember when I was a kid I read some good songfics on here so good thing I double checked!) The song, if anyone is curious, is called "Love goes on and on" by Lindsey Stirling and Evanescence. It is a breathtaking song. And I think it relays perfectly how many people feel after losing someone dear to them. I know it does to me.
If you want to read the original, you can find it on wattpad, archive of our own, or on my . It isn't that different, I only deleted the lyrics and one other sentence.
Lastly, just fyi, I may not update for a little over a week. I try to upload a chapter every week, but I may skip this next week because I will be out of town for a mini-vacation. I'm just going to assume I won't have time to write while I'm gone, so plan on no chapter for 2 weeks. I promise I'll be back to my normal schedule after this.
Thanks so much for reading! Your support means so much to me :)
