Chapter 16: Applied Science is Logical
Kingdom of Vale
Beacon Academy

0930 Hours
Shockwave had no particular interest in watching the initiation. He had formed his own opinions regarding the incoming students and Ozpin was well aware of his objections, yet ignored them anyway. It was illogical why the headmaster wanted to listen to his opinions without taking action. Why listen and then reject his answers?
The only reason that the former Decepticon was here to witness initiation was by mandatory requirement. All teachers were here to oversee the new prospective students in action and take any action should it be deemed necessary. While student casualties were expected every year, there were some situations that called for the veterans to step in. They were few and far in between, but there was precedence.
Perhaps this entire waste of time would be less of a waste if it wasn't for the fact that he was arguing pointlessly with his boss.
"Ruby Rose is a child." Shockwave made his opinion known about the latest initiate. "And children all want the same thing: unlimited freedom and no responsibility."
"They're all children, Shael." Ozpin rebutted without a care in the world. "Let them have their time. After all, one day they won't get a chance to relive their childhood."
"It is not advisable to excuse any of these potential students in any way." Shockwave wasn't buying it. "If given leeway once, they will undoubtedly take advantage of that lack of accountability. This will inspire self-grandeur and arrogance."
"As I'm sure all of us have experienced at one point or another." Ozpin again seemed unphased. "And perhaps a rude awakening might be just what they need."
"Even if we disregard Miss Rose's idealism and naivety, she is still lacking in two years of experience and training." Shockwave decided to try a different argument. "However talented she is in combat, making an exception for her was illogical. This may call into question your judgement."
"So it might." Ozpin said, sipping his coffee. "I'm prepared to deal with the consequences."
The headmaster seemed content to play around and not be explicit about his reasons as to why he allowed a fifteen-year-old girl into Beacon Academy. There was something going on and until he figured out what it was, Ruby Rose was to be classified as an unknown and watched carefully.
The conversation between the two of them fell silent and while this was the case, Shockwave would take the time to mentally review more important matters.
The ground bridge was all but complete and theoretically, it should function at full capacity. Now the only real problem was mapping out the entirety of Remnant. While the Cross Continental Transmit System was able to provide an entire layout of the world, it was imperfect at best. Generally speaking, land closer to the territory of the four kingdoms could be described in greater details as opposed to the more obscure and hard-to-reach places. Some major villages in the world had their own established communications array to stay in touch with the outside world and often times they had their own maps detailing the surrounding area. Those would serve to make a more complete world map.
In order to create his own detailed map of Remnant, Shockwave had devised a program to obtain information from every single device connected to the CCTS. Everything from scrolls to computers to cameras and even ATM's. Most technological devices could provide at least some sort of information that could be translated into a map. The real issue was the sheer number of items that had a connection to the CCTS. Leaning on the more conservative side there had to be at least several trillions of gigabytes of data floating around that could potentially be used to formulate a map. The other major problem was making sure to remain hidden as this was being done. There was only so much Beacon Academy could shield him from when it came to breaking the laws of the Kingdom of Vale.
Moving on, Project Predacon was well underway. Technically speaking, the scientist was not working with a Predacon bone, but the concept and overall execution was pretty much in the same vein as this project's predecessor. What he was working with was a mythical creature of the old times. So far, only about twenty-five percent of the DNA had been decoded and the main reason for the slow progress was on account of the wear and tear on the bone. It was amazing enough to find the bones of long-dead beasts much less something in decent enough condition for this project.
Shockwave's Cybertronian technology was speeding up the process greatly, but considering this was a new species he had never seen, he was double-checking and triple-checking his work to make sure that the DNA sample he would be synthesizing was as accurate as possible. Even the slightest mistake could result in imperfect complications when it came time to begin the actual building of the body. Mutations, unnatural deformations, and other unsightly defects were just a few obstacles among many. Patience and time were required, so there was nothing to do but let the systems do their thing and check in at suitable times.
With all of this slow progress, there was a silver lining. The remote outpost that had been established with the help of Team CFVY had been completed. With whatever time he could spare, the cybertronian-faunus hybrid had made trips to the site in order to set up more secretive equipment and hardware. This place was actually accessible to him via the ground bridge, but he had yet to make a trip using this method. He had always relied upon a bullhead or some other physical means of transportation. In order to maintain the secrecy that went with this place, his reports to Ozpin had him explaining that this place was a sort of forward outpost in order to assess the viability of reestablishing a foothold at Mountain Glenn. It was the truth and that was all that the headmaster needed to know.
All that this hidden laboratory needed was its own set of specialized tools. Everything would be more or less the same as it was back on Cybertron. It would be a sanctuary for him to work on his experiments and research in solitude. Tremendous headway would be a certainty and there would be no one to stop him from doing as he wished. After all, what laws and rules could be broken when they did not apply to the location he was in?
Now the only thing left to consider was how to best balance all of this on top of his position at Beacon. He had to carefully segment his time so as to achieve maximum efficiency. It was helpful that he required no sleep as most humans and faunus required. His Cybertronian physiology allowed him to work indefinitely so long as his body was provided the necessary energon needed for survivability. In this case, food and water were all he needed to maintain a never-ending workflow.
It would probably be during the night that he would truly work the most. He expected to get little done during the day as his teaching duties required that he be available for most hours of a normal school day. He could always find ways to get some slivers of work done in-between classes and during office hours and downtime.
"It would seem that all our students have found their partners." Ozpin mused out loud. "And we have quite the interesting pairs."
"I expect very little from all of them." Shockwave spoke his honest observations. "Their sense of camaraderie leaves much to be desired."
"That's to be expected." Ozpin tapped a button on his scroll. "After all, they've all come here with dreams and hopes of their own. They'll need to learn how to compromise with others."
"Assuming that their attempts at cooperation do not get them killed." Shockwave did not blink once. "And you wonder why I find these prospects illogical."
All that needed to be done was simply pointing out that Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee were arguing with each other about where the forest temple was. The entire debate was pointless as the location of the temple was not all that difficult to begin with. One only needed to get to higher ground and do a quick search. A child could accomplish this.
"It's wasted potential to be sure, but there is much that has yet to be unearthed." Ozpin watched the pair. "I have a feeling this Miss Rose could turn out to be quite the leader."
A leader?
Ruby Rose?
Shockwave regarded the grey-haired man with a careful look, then he resumed his attention back on the scroll.
Ruby Rose. The scientist failed to see what Ozpin saw. A child who has a childish view of the world. Illogical.
Maybe surveillance on her would be unnecessary.

Science 101
Team RWBY, having been nearly late to Peter Port's Grimm Studies class, was now making a conscious effort to be at least five minutes early to their next class. It had not been a rule that everyone agreed with. It was only at the insistence of Weiss that it be so. The only reason the rest of the team agreed was that the heiress would stop being so annoying about the matter. She was just so bossy.
It didn't help that for their first class, things weren't looking up. Sure, Grimm knowledge was necessary, but the way that they were expected to digest the information was just so tedious and maddening. Ruby didn't have a great attention span. Blake read a book in between taking notes, and Yang simply didn't care and dozed off. Only Weiss seemed to be fully paying attention without any sort of distractions. How she managed to get through Professor Port's class was anyone's guess.
"That was so boring." Yang yawned. "I must've fallen asleep in less than a minute. That must be a new record."
"Have you no sense of manners?" Weiss glared at the blonde. "We are here to learn. I would expect you to take this seriously."
"That wasn't exactly what you would call an interesting class." Blake commented. "Even I was having a hard time with the lecture and I can tolerate boring tasks."
"See, Weiss?" Ruby jabbed her partner. "Lighten up. We all agree that Grimm Studies was boring."
"It was informative!" Weiss rebutted. "And for this next class, I expect all of you to display behavior befitting of huntresses in training at Beacon!"
"Speaking of which, what is our next class?" Blake asked. "We didn't exactly get a close look at our schedule."
"Um, hold on a second." Ruby fumbled for a piece of paper in her pocket. "Not that one. Must be the other one."
"Unbelievable." Weiss grumbled at her leader's disorganization. "Our next class is Applied Science with Professor Shael Watson."
"Yawn." Yang wasn't the least bit interested. "It's going to be another snooze fest. I just know it."
"At least wait until we get there to start deciding whether or not you'll fall asleep." Blake resumed her attention on her book while walking. "Don't judge a class based on the subject."
"Maybe we'll learn some cool weapons stuff!" Ruby seemed excited. "Or maybe we'll use some cool tech!"
"This is basic level science for us huntresses!" Weiss corrected the red-themed girl. "Do not expect specialized knowledge!"
"Yeah, yeah, we got it, ice queen." Yang tuned out the white-haired girl. "Stop being such a basic bi-"
"Language!" Ruby warned her elder sister.
Yang fell silent, but she looked less than pleased.
The four of them made their way through the winding hallways, eventually reaching the classroom. The four of them were quick to enter and they were greeted with something far different from their expectations.
The classroom featured none of the typical sights. In place of a blackboard, there was one large screen nearly converting the width of the room and reaching a considerable height. The seating arrangement they were familiar with, but there appeared to be stations featuring some really advanced technology. All around the room, there were large dust containers of all kinds. Every type of dust imaginable in every form possible was present. Finally, their classroom featured quite the spectacular view of the Emerald Forest from what was visible from the windows.
"Whoa." Ruby wasn't sure how to process all of this.
"It's impressive." Weiss was impressed.
"Interesting." Blake could sense a story here.
"It's like a sci-fi class." Yang perked up. "That's kind of cool."
"SO COOL!" Ruby seemed to snap out of it.
"Restrain yourself!" Weiss smacked the back of the younger girl's head.
"Ow! Weiss, how could you say that?!" Ruby twisted her head left and right. "This has to be the most awesome classroom ever! That must mean the teacher's also awesome!"
"He must be at least unorthodox if nothing else." Blake took another look around. "I've never anything like this in a class before."
"Just let me know when things get interesting." Yang took a seat, putting her feet up on the desk. "I don't want to waste my energy again."
"You brute!" Weiss was indignant. "Do you have no sense of respect for anyone but yourself?"
"This coming from you of all people?" Blake sat down next to her partner. "Since when has a Schnee known anything but pride?"
"Our pride is earned!" Weiss put a hand to her chest. "That's why we carry it so!"
"Weiss, can we talk about this some other time?" Ruby whined. "I just want to sit down and see what this new cool stuff is!"
"I don't want to hear anything from you!" Weiss ignored her team leader and sat down elegantly. "Now I'd better not catch you fooling around again!"
"Got it." Ruby groaned, flopping her upper body onto the desk.
For the next few minutes, more students came in to take their seats. Team JNPR had come in earlier and had sat down close by. They and Team RWBY exchanged greetings and discussed a bit about Professor Port's lecture and how to get through such torture. It wasn't long before the bell rang, signalling that class had started. Before all of this, there was not a sign of the teacher.
Then he was just there.
There was no teaching podium, just an open space at the front of the class and standing in that open space was one man, but calling him a simple man wouldn't be doing him justice. First of all, he was tall, very tall, dwarfing pretty much all the students save for maybe one or two. He had flowing purple hair to match his purple outfit. His overall build was large yet still in proportion with his height. Clearly, he maintained an ideal physical condition.
But it was his face that caught the most attention. Cybernetic ears in place of normal ones and one cybernetic eye. For those with sharp eyes, a pair of sharp fangs could be seen in his mouth, marking him as a faunus.
"So cool." Ruby whispered to no one in particular.
"This is unexpected." Weiss had mixed feelings.
"Hm." Blake looked deep in thought.
"Damn." Yang was kind of in awe. "I think this might become my favorite class."
"Welcome to Applied Science." Professor Watson spoke his first words. "My name is Shael Watson. Some refer to me as Professor Watson. If you do not care for this calling, then Professor Shockwave is a suitable alternative."
Team RWBY heard his voice come through and it was perhaps the most unusual voice ever. It was a very deep voice, laced with an even tone and some other elements that couldn't be placed easily.
Nobody left the classroom, so the instructor took this as his cue to continue.
"This class will teach you science in relationship to your duty as future huntsmen and huntresses." Professor Watson spoke clearly and concisely. "Everything taught will be used in a practical setting. Nothing learned here will remain as simple theory."
Ruby grinned at this.
Weiss had mixed feelings etched on her face.
Blake's expression was inscrutable, yet focused.
Yang was staring. The view was very nice.
"For those of you who pass this class, you will be given access to more specialized courses dedicated to trades and skills that you may find useful to your work." His words flowed without hesitation. "You can find descriptions in your student handbook for each of these classes. If anything is unclear, I will answer questions as needed."
Ruby felt her excitement meter increasing beyond its limit.
Weiss appeared to have relaxed slightly. She was now intrigued.
Blake remained unreadable. She was laser-focused.
Yang was shamelessly staring. The view was very nice indeed.
If any doubts about this class had existed, they had all vanished into thin air. The four girls couldn't explain how this all felt to them. Each of them had their own personal responses to this professor and his presentation, but it was clear to all of them that the time spent here would be anything but uneventful.
"Before we begin, I have a question for all of you." Those red eyes scanned the entire room. "What is science?"
Weiss raised her hand instantly. "It's a system of knowledge in the form of testable hypotheses, theories, and predictions organized in a system that tries to explain the physical world."
"That would be the textbook answer, Miss Schnee." Professor Watson's eyes met hers. "Now what does that mean?"
"Exactly what it sounds like, sir." Weiss was lost. "Was the answer not satisfactory?"
"Yes, science is meant to explain the physical world through trial and error, but for what purpose?" Professor Watson addressed the entire classroom. "Why do we want to understand the physical world? Why do we need to understand it?
It wasn't just Team RWBY that appeared perplexed. The entire class seemed lost at this point. Science was just accepted as something that was part of everyday life in one form or another. Either it was understood on a basic level or it was understood like a different language. It seemed that the why part was kind of lost in it all.
Nobody had thought this far.
Transformers - - - RWBY
Shockwave more or less expected this sort of reaction when he posed his original question. These students were so focused on becoming huntsmen and huntresses that it did not occur to them that they ought to be thinking more about the steps to become Grimm killers. Youth was often so focused on the endgame that the journey was often overlooked. Even the smallest details could change the overall outcome of the lives of an individual.
"I don't understand the question, professor." Weiss Schnee looked peeved at not knowing a proper response.
"Whether you know it or not, all of you use science in your everyday lives." Shockwave explained his rationale. "You simply do not notice it because it has become almost as natural as breathing. Let me pose a more simple question: what does all technology on Remnant use for power?"
"Dust!" The heiress was quick to answer that. "Without it, advanced civilization wouldn't exist. Mankind wouldn't even be alive."
It was very brief, but the cybertronian-faunus hybrid noticed a slight undertone of haughtiness in his student. Also, he noticed that she emphasized the word "mankind." By themselves, these two facts meant little, but when one considered what the Schnee family was involved in, specifically in regard to their relationship with the faunus, there seemed to be an intent to test him. The more likely case was that she simply had a strained view on the faunus seeing as her file indicated that her family had been involved with more than a few violent altercations with the White Fang.
Whatever the case, it was hardly an obstacle worth fretting over.
"A by the book answer, but still correct nonetheless." Shockwave made a point of reminding the girl that she was being predictable. "The discovery of dust and all of its current applications can be attributed to thousands of years of research and constant invention and innovation, but the average person does not care about the nuances. It can be easy to forget that the conveniences that you all enjoy are the product of science in one form or another, which brings us back to the original question: what is science?"
For a moment, he surveyed the entire classroom, looking for signs that someone had an answer. Judging by the looks on a few faces, some revelations were being discovered while others were still taking time to fully process. Before he would allow anyone to answer, he would put one student on the spot.
"Jaune Arc." Shockwave homed in on the leader of Team JNPR.
"Yes sir?!" Mister Arc seemed unnaturally tense.
"Do you have an answer to the question?" Shockwave's eyes all but ordered the boy to say something.
Jaune had no idea what to say, yet he fumbled for an answer anyway. "Um, well… the answer… is…"
His pauses and attempt to stall for time spoke volumes about his inability to answer the question. It was a truly unimpressive sight and this only added to the already highly illogical nature of Ozpin's decision to allow this failure to enter the academy. Even worse yet, there was a clear sign that no decisive answer was going to come out of Arc's mouth, right or wrong, and indecision in a battle was the difference between life and death.
Megatron wouldn't have hesitated to make decisions even for a microsecond and right or wrong, the leader of the Decepticons always dealt with the consequences accordingly.
"Mister Arc, you either have an answer or you do not." Shockwave decided to cut straight through. "Which is it?"
Jaune appeared to want to fight, but after receiving a look from his partner, he seemed to deflate. "I don't know, sir."
The rest of the classroom seemed to be amused by this admission as some snickers and light laughs sounded off. This might work as a motivator to remind the boy that he was in a place beyond his ability. Either that would serve to motivate him or the pressure would overwhelm him. Either way, this child had an incredibly arduous journey ahead of him.
"Is there anyone else who has an answer?" Shockwave scanned all the faces present before he noticed a raised hand. "Pyrrha Nikos, your answer."
"Yes, professor." Pyrrha spoke with professionalism and confidence. "Put simply, science is important to us because it's how any of us can live the way we do now. Everything from our behavior to our technology to even the food we eat is courtesy of the many brilliant minds that have come before that have used science to help Mankind understand the world better. We use science because it improves us and allows us to achieve greater heights."
The former Decepticon took one look at the most promising student of this freshman class. He was well aware of her performance academically speaking. Just like with her combat abilities, her grades were nothing short of top notch. At first, it was simply a guess that this girl possessed superior genes that allowed her to excel at a myriad of skills and abilities. Now it felt like less of a possibility and more of a certainty. Her progress was to be tracked and recorded meticulously. It was important to test what her limits were.
"An apt statement." Shockwave nodded briefly before resuming his attention to all assembled. "Science is the foundation of everything in the physical world. Everything we do, everything we think, everything we believe, all of it has a route in science and unlike religion, science never stagnates in how it views the world. It is constantly evolving, becoming something greater than it was in the past. I am here to teach all of you how you can become a part of that process which changes our understanding of the physical world… and perhaps make the world into something far superior than ever."
Aside from a handful of students, everyone had their eyes on him. The promise of being able to change the world clearly had them all anticipating more. All he needed to do was keep up the momentum and soon enough, there would be no doubt in their minds.
And he had just the idea in mind.
Shockwave powered on the classroom's holographic projector. The lights dimmed and the windows were closed. There were a few murmurs and some slight panicking sounds, but all of that noise was silenced once the 3D images appeared to them. This material was so highly advanced that he expected none of them to be able to understand it, but it wasn't the formulas nor the calculations that drew their attention. Rather, it was the results that drew the focus. All across the room, students were whipping their heads around to make sense of all the information that they were being presented with.
"What you see here is a sample of my work." Shockwave said. "Weapons technology, DNA reconstruction, cyber warfare, prosthetics, all of this and much more can be learned if you are willing to dedicate considerable effort and time."
Just as quickly as the holograms came into being, they disappeared and the room lights returned to normal and the windows opened.
"However, in order to reach these specialized projects and subjects, basic fundamentals need to be learned and reinforced." Shockwave redirected their attention back to him. "If any of you wish to focus on a specific branch of scientific study, then you must master the basics first and it begins here."
With a mental command, the overlord of the room began sending mental commands via his neural interface into the computers set out for each student. Monitors began to flicker to life and many pairs of eyes began to read the contents.
"Starting this week, you will all begin by mastering your most basic component of combat: dust." Shockwave had already laid out the necessary assignments and additional bonuses. "By the end of next week, each of you will bring in a dust formula of your own design and show me how your creation is applicable to combat. The necessary reading material has been uploaded to your scrolls and you are all permitted to use as much dust as you wish from this laboratory. Equipment will be provided."
This was a first test for all the boys and girls assembled here. Although Beacon Academy kept detailed profiles of most of the students, they could hardly account for all personal quirks, traits, and behaviors. This week-long assignment would serve as a means of gauging who here possessed the greatest mind for creativity. Additionally, granting some freedom in this task would weed out the dedicated from the disinterested. There was no need to expose the latter. They only needed to let their own failures speak for themselves and that shame and embarrassment would be visible for all to see.
Shockwave had many disagreements with Ozpin concerning the freshman class, but there was one thing they could agree on: there was much wasted energy in need of purpose and direction.
If the headmaster proved that he could not provide either the purpose or direction for these assets, then the former Decepticon would do it his way.
RWBY - - - Transformers
Jaune couldn't help but be stumped as he tried to get through this dust theory stuff. It wasn't that he was completely in the dark about this stuff, but his knowledge on the subject wasn't up to snuff with everyone else, so he was having to learn as he went and he wasn't about to ask for help. He didn't want to appear incompetent to his teammates.
Then again, his little display in science class this morning had done little to help him boost his image in the eyes of the first years. It was only thanks to Pyrrha that he had managed to not humiliate himself further, but no matter how much his partner ensured him that everything was fine, it didn't stop him from thinking about how the entire class now thought so very little of him.
Of course, Jaune hated that he was called on by Professor Watson today. He wished that his time had come later. He wasn't ready to answer tough questions. He figured that at least a few days or a couple of weeks would be enough time for him to get caught up and then he would appear more competent, but luck wasn't on his side this time.
It might just be his senses, but the blonde teenager could swear that when he met eyes with the very intimidating man that was his new science teacher, those eyes were piercing into his soul and demanding that he just come clean about what he had done to get into Beacon Academy.
Was it possible that he had been found out already?
No, that couldn't be it. If his falsified transcripts had been discovered, he would have already been kicked out. There wouldn't be a point in keeping around a faker unless said faker wasn't found out, at least that's what his own logic told him.
Jaune couldn't dwell too much on his methods of entry. Like it or not, he was here just like he had always dreamed and he needed to work hard so that he could be a huntsman. He didn't want to go back to his family until he could tell that the bumbling, idiotic fool that had left home was now a huntsman of impressive caliber.
"Jaune?" Pyrrha's voice snapped him back. "Are you okay?"
"Huh? Oh, uh, yeah." Jaune shook his head. "I was just thinking about some stuff. What's up, Pyrrha?"
"I was just about to do some training." Pyrrha motioned to her gear. "Would you care to join me?"
"No, I'm good, but thanks." Jaune smiled. "Maybe next time."
"Very well." Pyrrha patted him on the shoulder. "If you need anything, let me know. Ren and Nora are in the library if you need them."
He watched the redhead go and he felt himself sigh a bit. Truthfully, a bit of help could really help quite a bit, but he didn't want to do that. If he asked for help in any way, it would feel like admitting that he couldn't do anything himself. The whole reason he wanted to become a huntsman was to prove that he could get stuff done by himself. If he couldn't be self-sufficient, then what was the point?
Jaune forced himself to resume studying.
The basis for all of my classroom scenes is going to be based on what I wished school was more like when I was participating. I understand that in school, lectures are necessary at times and there are some unpleasant things you need to get through, but I can't help but think there's got to be a better way to motivate students to learn. There has to be.
Meanwhile, Shockwave is making his own plans. I mean, come on, once he began to see Ozpins illogicalities piling up one by one, he was bound to realize that maybe playing strictly by the headmaster's rules isn't the best way to go. The two of them may believe that the winning side is the living, but the methods involved are much more different.
As Volume 7 continues, I can't help but realize just how many plot holes and nonsensical logic that RWBY has developed. You know Robyn Hill, the woman who tried to steal from the military and then decides dares to present herself like she does as a champion to the people? How does that make sense? Why would anyone in their right mind trust someone who would be willing to steal from a military?
For a long time, I've been trying to put into words why RWBY has become increasingly more frustrating as time goes on and I found my answer.
Recently, I finished Gurren Lagann. I now regret not watching this series earlier. It did something that very few animes do for me: keep me wanting more. That anticipation is due to one reason: Gurren Lagann established cool, exciting, and satisfying bases and never lost sight of them once. Even though there were tone shifts and massive evolutions, they were all in line with the ultimate theme, atmosphere, and setting of the story. However stupid, illogical, and unrealistic it was, Gurren Lagann stuck to its guns and made me believe in the impossible in its own way.
RWBY by contrast started out as one thing and became something else entirely. The show has gotten to a point where I don't even recognize some of these characters. I completely forgot that Yang and Ruby were even sisters because apparently, appeasing the Bumblebee shippers is more important than delivery a consistent series to Rooster Teeth. The show just can't decide what it wants to be. It was originally about girls kicking ass. Now it's got real out of place character drama and it's trying to be Game of Thrones in V7.
So why did I just raise these points? Well, the way I see it, this story serves as a way for me to "correct" some of the major problems. Rooster Teeth is free to do what they please with their own IP and I am free to write this story and disagree emphatically with how they go about carrying on Monty Oum's work.
So what do you guys think about this chapter? About V7? About RWBY overall? Thoughts and feedback are always appreciated.
Thanks for reading and I wish you all happy holidays!
