Day 7: Meteor shower
"Sakura?" When Sasuke jolted awake, alone in bed, the first thing he did in his blind panic was to call for his missing wife. They were supposed to be safe, having reached a village and found a reputable inn. Sasuke had even sent a message to that bozo back in Konoha to let him know where they were.
Maybe that's why we were found. Maybe the hawk was intercepted without either of us knowing. Maybe-
"Sasuke-kun, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you up," Sakura whispered from where she perched on the window sill. Her green eyes shone against her silhouette as she looked back at him, and the glow of the stars traced a smile on her lips.
His heart settled again. She beckoned him to join her, and, unable to deny her anything, he settled himself behind her and wrapped his arm around her. Sakura sighed happily, curling up against his chest like a happy cat as he absently played with the ends of her hair. He didn't say anything as she drew her knees up and tucked her cold toes under his thigh. It's a new moon tonight, he thought, looking up at the vast darkness with only the tiny pinpoints of light for company.
"Why are you out here instead of in bed?" He asked, not really paying attention to her response. The uneasiness he'd felt when he'd woken up without her still made his heart unsettled.
"The proprietress said that it was a good night for meteor showers," Sakura answered absently. For once, her eyes were glued to the sky and not to his face. Sasuke wasn't sure he liked the change. "It hasn't started yet. I wanted to see how many wishes I could make."
"Wishes?" Sasuke asked. He resisted the urge to interrupt her night-sky watching with a kiss.
"You know, make a wish on a shooting star," She finally looked at him in disbelief when he remained silent. "You've never wished upon a shooting star? Not even when you were a kid?"
"My parents weren't exactly the kind for fairytales. And then… well," Sasuke smiled when he saw the clearly distressed look on Sakura's face. He could talk more easily about the before, now. Sakura, however, still wasn't sure how to approach the subject.
Impulsively, she threw her arms around him and buried her face in the crook of his neck, "I'm sorry, Sasuke-kun." Hot tears landed against his skin, but these ones were a balm to his heart and not a brand to his soul. Like before.
"It's okay," He patted her back. A glint against the velvety darkness caught his eye, and he nudged her so she wouldn't miss the show, "It's starting."
Still rubbing her eyes, Sakura nevertheless turned to watch the spectacle. It started slowly, with one or two white lines that scored the inky darkness. Those lights became longer streaks ping-ponging across the sky, and flashes of colours started appearing in those lights - green like her eyes, pink like her hair, gold like her sunny, sunny smile. Sasuke couldn't help but smile as he watched her face. When the enormous fireballs lit up the sky, Sakura actually jumped a bit and unconsciously caught the front of his yukata. He decided those were his favourite if she asked him, later. For a while, she'd closed her eyes, and her lips had moved silently under Nature's light show.
Hours later, as the lights slowed back down to a few white streaks, Sasuke noticed Sakura wince since she'd been sitting for so long. His thigh was a bit numb too, although he would never tell her that. He reached down and started rubbing her feet, ever the dutiful husband. In order to distract her from the pins and needles, he asked, "So what wishes did you make?"
"So many!" Sakura yawned as she started counting them off, "For your health, happiness, and peace, that you'll be able to come home to Konoha and stay soon and we can grow old together, that I can open that hospital for children traumatized by the war, that the spirits of your family are well and healthy wherever they are, that Shishou finally learns how to win at gambling, that our friends will live long and happy lives, and that our future children will be born healthy and live happily in a time of peace-"
Sasuke couldn't help it. He poked her forehead with two fingers, "You're already thinking of our future children?"
"Well there were so many shooting stars, I started running out of wishes." Sakura blushed. "What did you wish for?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing? Sasuke-kun, you're no fun."
"All that I want is in my arms right now. What else should I wish for?" The words were simple, yet held a world of meaning between them. Sakura wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his chest again.
After a minute, a quiet voice came from below his chin.
"Sasuke-kun?"
"Hn?"
"You only have one arm, you know."
