Day 10: Strawberry Girl
Sasuke had tried to talk Sakura into going tomato-picking instead of strawberrying, but Sakura had insisted. It had to be strawberries, and it had to be at that specific farm. So, ever the dutiful boyfriend, he only grumbled a little bit as they made their way through neat rows of green bushes and red berries one sunny Saturday afternoon.
"Yay! We finally made it!" Sakura cheered, throwing her arms in the air and nearly losing her sun hat in the process.
"Aren't you a little too excited?" Sasuke asked. He caught the errant sunhat for her and dropped it back on her head.
"It's all-you-can-eat strawberries, though!" Sakura said excitedly, "Besides, this variety is famous for producing some heart-shaped ones. Neh, Sasuke-kun, did you know that there's a legend, that if you eat a heart-shaped strawberry, it'll give you eternal happiness?"
Sasuke snorted, "How can a fruit give you happiness?"
"I guess not. But I still want to find one!" Sakura pumped her fist.
They searched for half the afternoon until the sun was starting to dip on the horizon, with Sakura diligently picking through the bushes looking for her heart-shaped strawberry and Sasuke diligently feeding her freshly-picked berries that he washed and inspected for bugs. By the time they'd reached the last row, Sasuke realized that the water bottle he'd been carrying to wash the fruit had run out.
"I have to go refill the water," Sasuke called to her. Sakura just waved her hand at him absently, still focused on her hunt. He allowed himself a slight smirk as he enjoyed the luxury of just watching his girlfriend for a minute. She was his girlfriend. So adorable.
Not that he'd ever say it out loud.
Sasuke was only gone for a minute, but on his way back, he heard Sakura yell. Startled, he sprinted towards her, worried that she was scared, worried that he was too late, worried that she was… grinning like a lunatic?
Face smudged with dirt and one shiny, heart-shaped berry held carefully in her hands, Sakura was smiling so wide Sasuke could see her molars. He relaxed then held out the water bottle, tilting it so she could wash her long-sought prize.
"Here, Sasuke-kun," Sakura took advantage of Sasuke being about to say something and popped her precious strawberry into his mouth. Shocked, Sasuke bit down on reflex, flooding his mouth with the taste of tartness and sweet sunshine, fresh from the fields. She grinned and reached out to wipe the corner of his mouth with her thumb where some of the juice had leaked.
"Weren't you looking for yourself?" Sasuke managed around a mouth full of pulp.
"Nope," Sakura smiled, "I was looking for one for you! Who else would I want eternal happiness for?"
I will be the one to give you eternal happiness.
AN: This ficlet owes a debt of gratitude to Tsun-Ama No Kareshi, another manga where my SasuSaku Shipper goggles COULD NOT BE DETERRED. Chapter 6, specifically ;)
