Chapter 4: The Great Papyrus
Papyrus and the others had left from home on Monday, after exposing Dell Damon as a fraud they tried to return home immediately, but a sudden storm closed the airports from Tuesday to Thursday, and there were no flights to their destination on Friday. Finally, on Saturday morning the three monsters were able to get on a flight home. Meanwhile, Frisk had not been doing well, she had barely eaten, slept, or even taken the time to clean herself since the incident. Finally, Frisk was feeling a little bit better, at least enough to go take a shower, while Toriel seized the opportunity to finally wash Frisk's sweater. As Frisk scrubbed away the dirt from the week, she realized how odd it was that such a small thing could make her feel so much better. Frisk returned to her room wrapped in a towel and sat down on her bed, then soon found herself falling asleep for the first time since the incident.
Papyrus pulled up outside Toriel's house in his red convertible and excitedly ran to the door. "GREETINGS QUEEN TORIEL, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAVE RETURNED." Said Papyrus.
"Greetings Papyrus, welcome back." Replied Toriel.
"How's it going bro?" Asked Sans.
"IT'S ABOUT TO GET BETTER. FROM ALL YOUR PHONE CALLS, I GOT THE IMPRESSION THAT FRISK WAS DEPRESSED." Said Papyrus.
"Only the impression?" Asked Sans.
"SO, I'VE TAKEN IT UPON MYSELF TO CHEER HER UP!" Cheered Papyrus.
"That's wonderful to hear Papyrus. Frisk is in her room." Said Toriel before Papyrus quickly charged up the stairs.
Frisk is going to be with Papyrus for the rest of the day, so that just leaves me and Sans. Thought Toriel. "Do you have any plans for today Sans?" Asked Toriel.
"Yeah, I'll probably go hang out with Pap and Frisk." Replied Sans. "Why do you ask?"
"Oh… no reason." Replied Toriel, Sans heard a twinge of sadness in her voice, but decided to leave well enough alone for now.
Frisk woke up from her nap and yawned, then the door to her room came flying open. "GREETINGS FRISK, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAVE RETURNED! AND I HAVE A WHOLE DAY OF ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR US!" Cheered Papyrus.
"Ah! P-Papyrus… That's great, but… I have to put on clothes!" Said Frisk as she closed her towel tighter.
"AH, YES, CLOTHES! THOSE WILL BE PERFECT FOR A DAY LIKE TODAY! I'LL GO PUT CLOTHES ON TOO!" Cheered Papyrus as he left Frisk's room. Once he was in the hallway Papyrus realized "Wait a moment… I AM WEARING CLOTHES! THIS TIME I'M THE ONE PREPARED FOR A DATE." Chuckled Papyrus to himself.
Frisk chuckled at Papyrus's antics then removed her towel so she could get dressed, but then she saw something that made her blood run cold. In her right hand, Frisk was holding a solid red knife. She quickly threw it in a desk drawer and tried to pretend she hadn't saw it. Frisk got dressed in her usual clothes, with her freshly washed sweater going on last.
As Papyrus and Frisk got into Papyrus's convertible Papyrus explained his plan for the day to Frisk. "FIRST WE'LL GO HAVE BREAKFAST WITH UNDYNE, THEN WE'LL WATCH ANIME WITH ALPHYS, AND THEN WE'LL GO TO A METTATON CONCERT TO GET READY FOR APPEARING ON HIS SPECIAL WORLDWIDE BROADCAST THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW!" Explained Papyrus.
"Sounds great!" Replied Frisk.
Papyrus knocked on Undyne's front door while Frisk waited beside him. "Papyrus? What are you doing here?" Asked Undyne sleepily as she opened the door.
"GREETINGS UNDYNE! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAVE DECIDED TO TAKE FRISK ON A FUN ACTIVITY FILLED DAY, AND I WAS HOPING TO START OFF BY TAKING HER TO HAVE BREAKFAST WITH YOU." Explained Papyrus happily.
"Seriously? Papyrus after that long trip? How are you not exhausted?" Asked Undyne.
"THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION. I HAVE A BETTER ONE, IF YOUR SO TIRED THEN HOW DID YOU OPEN THE DOOR SO FAST?" Asked Papyrus.
"Sans showed up here a while before you did and has been here waiting for you." Explained Undyne.
"Heya bro." Said Sans as he stepped out from behind Undyne.
"WHAT!? SANS!? BUT WE LEFT TORIEL'S WHILE YOU WERE STILL THERE! AND WE DROVE HERE! HOW COULD YOU HAVE BEATEN US HERE!?" Asked Papyrus.
"I took my bike." Replied Sans
"WELL, THAT DOESN'T EXPLAIN IT! MY CAR SHOULD BE MUCH FASTER THAN THAT BIKE OF YOURS!" Exclaimed Papyrus.
"Then how did I beat you here?" Asked Sans.
"THAT'S WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW!" Yelled Papyrus.
"Calm down bro, it's going tibia ok." Said Sans with a wink and a rim shot.
"SANS! I'VE HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH YOUR SKELEPUNS! I SAY IF YOU THINK YOUR BIKE IS FASTER THAN THE GREAT PAPYRUS'S CAR, THEN WE SHOULD HAVE A RACE!" Declared Papyrus.
"A race!?" Asked Undyne excitedly, all traces of her exhaustion gone.
"Sounds great, why don't we do it right after breakfast?" Suggested Sans.
"Hey, where did Frisk go?" Asked Undyne, noticing Frisk was no longer beside Papyrus.
"I'm here." Said Frisk as she walked back to Papyrus's side. "Sorry I wandered off."
"It's fine, come on in." Said Undyne. Ok, this may be the lack of sleep talking, but were Frisk's eyes red for a second there? Wondered Undyne. Noticing an odd fluid stain on Frisk's sweater, Undyne decided to ask about it so she could take another look at Frisk's eyes. "Hey Frisk, what's with the stain on your sweater?"
Frisk looked and saw the stain but had no idea where she had gotten it. "I'm not sure… it must have happened a long time ago." Replied Frisk.
Undyne saw there was no longer any red in Frisk's eyes and decided to accept the answer, but Sans saw a new problem. "Hey wait. Tori washed your sweater this morning, it couldn't just be something old." Said Sans.
No one was able to explain this, but after a little while the group moved on. After breakfast Papyrus and Sans decided to have their race from Undyne's house to Snowdin town. "NYHEHE, THERE'S NO WAY MY LAZY BONES BROTHER WILL BE ABLE TO PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO SNOWDIN TOWN FROM HERE." Laughed Papyrus as he got into the driver's seat of his car, Frisk got in the passenger seat, and Undyne got in the back.
"Hey Papyrus, knock knock." Said Sans.
"Who's there?" Asked Papyrus begrudgingly.
"Boo" Replied Sans.
"BOO WHO?" Asked Papyrus.
"Aw, crying already bro? The race hasn't even started yet." Joked Sans.
"AH MY LIFE IS STILL AGONY!" Screamed Papyrus.
"Alright, the race starts when this spear hits the ground." Said Undyne as she threw a spear into the air. As soon as it hit the ground Papyrus took off.
Might as well give him a head start. Thought Sans, he looked and saw a puddle on the ground where Papyrus's car had been previously. I don't know much about cars, but I sure hope that's normal. Thought Sans as he started pedaling after Papyrus and secretly using his space bending power to catch up with the others.
"Ha! We left Sans in the dust!" Gloated Undyne.
"Are you sure he won't catch up to us?" Asked Frisk.
"Ha! There is no way Sans- IS CATCHING UP TO US!" Yelled Undyne as she saw Sans was approaching them, despite pedaling at what seemed like a very leisurely pace. Papyrus then looked out the window and saw that Sans was now right beside him.
"SANS! CAN'T YOU GO ONE DAY WITHOUT BREAKING THE LAWS OF NATURE!?" Yelled Papyrus.
"Sorry bro, no can do." Said Sans as he pulled ahead of Papyrus's car.
"YEAH… WELL I HEARD GOING THAT FAST ON A BIKE COULD MAKE YOUR LUNGS COLLAPSE!" Yelled Papyrus, who was stuck for a comeback.
"Come on Papyrus! Step on it!" Yelled Undyne.
"I'M GOING AS FAST AS I CAN!" Said Papyrus.
Not long after that, both the skele-brothers were approaching Snowdin town with Sans in the lead. Until two workers stepped into the road carrying a large glass window. Sans quickly turned the bike on its side and slid under the glass and pulled off to the side of the road. "What are you doing carrying a giant glass window through the middle of the road!?" Yelled Sans.
"What are you doing riding a bicycle at two-hundred miles per hour?" Asked one of the workers.
"That's fair." Replied Sans.
"Papyrus hit the brakes!" Screamed Undyne.
"THEY AREN'T WORKING!" Screamed Papyrus as he repeatedly pushed the brake pedal without his car slowing down at all. Papyrus crashed through the glass window the workers were carrying, covering him, Undyne, and Frisk in glass. "FRISK ARE YOU OK!?" Screamed Papyrus worriedly.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Replied Frisk as she used her sleeves to brush off the glass.
"PAPYRUS! TURN THE CAR OFF!" Yelled Sans.
Papyrus quickly turned the key, cutting off the car's power. The car gradually lost momentum, before coming to a stop outside Papyrus's house. "I think my lungs just collapsed." Said Undyne calling back Papyrus's earlier statement.
Sans pulled up next to the car on his bike and said "Well, I guess you won the race."
After the group made sure they were all ok they quickly checked to see what happened to the brakes. "It looks like someone cut the brakes." Said Undyne. "There's still some fluid leaking out, and the cut on the line looks to clean for normal wear and tear."
"Well, I guess since it's already at my house, I can work on it tomorrow." Muttered Papyrus to himself. "COME ON FRISK, LET'S MOVE ON TO OUR NEXT ACTIVITY!" Cheered Papyrus, Frisk smiled and the two set off towards Alphys's place.
"I don't get it, I just told him that someone might have tried to assassinate him or Frisk, and he just moves on?" Asked Undyne.
"Well Papyrus loves keeping others happy, and telling Frisk that Dell tried to kill her again, wouldn't make her very happy." Said Sans.
"Yeah, but do you really think Dell was the one responsible for this? He's in jail, and… well this is going to sound crazy, but the fluid on Frisk's sweater, the fact she was near Papyrus's car without any of us watching her, the fact Papyrus's brakes worked fine when he arrived at my house. Doesn't that seem pretty odd?" Asked Undyne.
"You make a good point, and then there was that red glow in Frisk's eyes when she came back from Pap's car." Said Sans.
"You saw it too? This is weird, Sans why don't you follow them around and see if anything else happens." Suggested Undyne, but by the time she finished Sans had already taken off after Papyrus and Frisk.
Later
"Alright Undyne, this is your first day as a palace guard." Thought Undyne to herself. "If I do well here, and in my training with Asgore, I'm guaranteed to get into the royal guard!" Undyne then knocked on the door to Asgore and Toriel's home, the underground castle.
"Howdy Undyne." Greeted Asgore as he invited Undyne inside.
"Greeting's king Asgore." Greeted Undyne. "What are my orders for today?"
"Hehe, no need to be so formal Undyne. I have a fairly simple task for you to take care of." Explained Asgore, before Toriel came in from another room wearing a nice turquoise colored Dress. "You see, me and Tori are having a date night tonight, and we would like for you to watch Asriel and Chara." Explained Asgore as he gestured to the living room, where Chara was taking a nap on Toriel's reading chair and Asriel was sitting at a table drawing.
"Oh… babysitting." Recapped Undyne, somewhat disappointed.
"I know it might not be the challenge you were looking for Undyne." Said Toriel. "But I think you'll find it a bit more challenging than you realize."
"Alright, I'll take your word for it." Said Undyne.
After receiving some basic instructions from Toriel, Undyne waved goodbye to the two boss-monsters as they set off for the evening. "Ha! This is going to be too easy." Thought Undyne. "I just have to watch two kids for the night, and one of them is already asleep!" Undyne entered the living room expecting to see that the children were still there, but she swallowed nervously when she realized that they were both gone. "Uh-oh." Said Undyne before she took off through the palace looking for Asriel and Chara.
A few minutes later.
"Prince Asriel! Lady Chara!" Called Undyne as she searched the garden for the two children. "Man, I have to find those kids!" Thought Undyne before she saw something that made her freeze in place. Nearby in the garden, Undyne saw Asriel and Chara kissing under a large tree. "Asgore is going to kill me." Thought Undyne.
Undyne woke up with a gasp, only to find herself on the couch in her house. Oh, looks like I fell asleep on the couch. Thought Undyne as she sat up and looked at her phone, only to see that she had 14 missed calls from Sans. Oops. Though Undyne as she called Sans back.
"Undyne? I've been calling you for hours! Ha, and people call me lazy." Said Sans.
"Sorry Sans, I kinda passed out on my couch after you left. Did anything happen?" Asked Undyne.
