Chapter 18: Megalomaniac
Chara woke up in the pause menu and saw she was back in her spirit form, her body was lying nearby in the clothes she had brought for it, and Frisk was in her own body standing near the reset button. "What are you doing!?" Screamed Chara.
"We had a deal. You got to use my body to get Asriel's soul, then you would use a true reset to take us back to the day we fell into the underground." Explained Frisk. "But I've had enough of you torturing my friends; I know with all those execution points in you, nothing I say will have any impact on you. So, I found a way to take us back to the ruins, just before you killed anyone. The only problem is, I need the power from someone else's soul to use it. Chara, if you help me with this, we can try again and do this the right way."
"This is the only right way!" Yelled Chara as she reentered Frisk's body and fought for control. Chara managed to gain control of Frisk's body but couldn't drive Frisk out. Chara pressed the continue button and was taken to the judgement hall, just before her fight with Sans had begun.
I don't get it. Why would she suddenly kill herself and then come back? Wondered Sans. Is Frisk really in there fighting for control? Or is this just Chara trying to keep the illusion of Frisk alive? Sans didn't have any more time to think as Chara charged at him. Sans launched a few bones at Chara, ordinarily she would have been able to dodge them all easily, but now Frisk was slowing down her movements. The bones then pierced Chara's body and made her load.
Save loaded.
Ok… that was way too easy. Thought Sans.
"What is wrong with you!?" Thought Chara to Frisk while they fought for control of Frisk's body.
"I'm not going to let you win." Declared Frisk.
"Fine, let's get started." Said Chara as she prepared to fight Sans again.

"Listen and hear, a song the birds are singing." Sang Frisk, though only Chara could hear her. "Sit down a while and watch the flowers blooming. A pleasant breeze blows by, leaving a trail of dust." Sang Frisk, while Chara tried to ignore her and charged at Sans. "This is your fault, right?" Sang Frisk as Sans launched a wave of bones at Chara. "Standing in the corridor, who thought we'd be here like this together?" Sang Frisk as Chara jumped out of the way of the bones, only to be hit by a Gaster blaster. "On a gorgeous day like this, I ask 'what is it that you want?'" Sang Frisk as Chara loaded her save point at the beginning of the fight. Chara slashed at Sans, only to have him sidestep her attack and throw her into a wall before bones shot out from it and impaled her. "I believe there was a time, when we could be pals and things were better." Sang Frisk as Chara loaded her save point again. "Eating bad food, enjoying laughs, can we go back to that?" Sang Frisk as she showed Chara visions of a future where the two of them got along. Sans fired several Gaster blasters at Chara while she tried to dodge, despite being slowed down by Frisk. "If you're still in there listening kid, just reset the timeline and let's please forget all of this." Sang Frisk as Chara avoided the last Gaster blaster. "Even after what you did, he believed you." Sang Frisk as she showed Chara the memory of her killing Papyrus. "'til the end." Sang Frisk as Sans pointed at Chara and sent several bones flying at her. "Looking at your face right now, that expression tells me, I can't afford not to care anymore." Sang Frisk as one of the bones struck Chara's heart, making her load her last save point again. "Turn this path around, wipe your dirty hands clean." Sang Frisk as Chara was hit by a Gaster blaster. "Give up!" Sang Frisk as Sans threw Chara into a pile of bones with his telekinesis, making her return to the pause menu. Chara staggered out of Frisk's body and into her own but didn't get up afterward. "Please don't, come back." Sang Frisk, before she reached for the reset button. "If you're, my friend." Sang Frisk, before Chara grabbed her arm. The reset button cracked and shattered to pieces as Chara pressed the continue button. Sans swallowed nervously when he saw that it was no longer Frisk that he was fighting, but the true Chara. "Please…" Sang Frisk. "Listen and hear a song the birds are singing, sit down a while and watch the flowers blooming." Sang Frisk as Chara charged at Sans. Sans pointed his left arm at Chara and launched several bones at her, but Chara moved much faster than she had previously and either broke or dodged all the bones, before charging at Sans again. "A pleasant breeze flows by leaving a trail of- How could you have done this?" Sang Frisk, changing the lyrics at the last second to try and distract Chara. Chara tried several times to cut Sans, but he used his telekinesis to throw her at a pile of bones, but Chara drove her knife into a column to stop from hitting the bones.
"I'm sorry Sans." Whimpered Frisk as she punched the wall of the pause menu which she watched the fight through. "Is there still a glimmer of hope?" Sang Frisk as Chara slashed at Sans and cut his jacket. "Will you choose, to do the right thing?" Sang Frisk as Chara dodged a Gaster blaster.
Sans panted heavily, nearly out of energy. "Please now bud," Sang Frisk as Sans weakly pointed at Chara. "If you're there." Sang Frisk as Sans launched three bones at Chara, though they moved far slower than the bones from earlier. "Have, a," Chara knocked the first bone aside with her knife. "Change," Chara knocked away the second bone with a back swing from her knife. "Of heart." Sang Frisk as Chara caught the third bone with her left hand. "Listen and hear a song the birds are singing." Sang Frisk as she punched the wall of the pause menu, this time cracking it. When Frisk saw the crack form on the wall, she immediately punched it again, cracking it further. "Sit down a while and watch the flowers blooming." Sang Frisk as Chara towered over the defenseless Sans. "What a nice day." Sang Frisk as Chara swung her knife intending to kill Sans.
Sans gasped in shock as blood splattered on the ground, but Chara was far more surprised when she felt someone's fist crash into her face, making her stagger back. Frisk turned around, revealing the long slash on her chest from Chara's attack and said "I'm sorry Sans… please, take my soul, and fix my mistakes. One last time." When Frisk finished speaking, a red heart shaped object floated towards Sans while Frisk fell to the ground. Seeing Frisk's soul, Chara made her creepy face as she tried to grab it, but Sans managed to grab the soul first. When Frisk's and Sans's souls combined there was a large explosion that sent Chara flying down the hall, when she landed on her back and sat up to look for Sans.
Sans felt a sudden rush of power to his body as he stood to his feet, and as he opened his left eye it continued to burn blue, but when he opened his right eye, it now burned red from the power of Frisk's soul. When Chara spotted Sans, she grabbed her knife and prepared to stand up and fight Sans again but stopped when Sans started speaking. "Hehe, aren't you missing something buddy?" Asked Sans as he gestured to the yellow and black reset button next to him, making Chara growl. "But first…" Sans snapped his fingers and a large bone shot out of the ground, piercing Chara's stomach, and lifting her high into the air. Twelve Gaster blasters then appeared around Chara and fired simultaneously, turning her to ash. "Get dunked on," Said Sans as he reached for the reset button "you megalomaniac." Finished Sans as he pressed reset.
The world faded to black as Sans felt incredible power flowing from his soul, but he could only think of one thing. Frisk is real! I can still save her! I can save everyone! Thought Sans, but the power flowing from his soul soon became too much for his body to handle and he lost consciousness.
"Sans! Sans get up!" Yelled a strange voice that Sans hadn't heard in years.
"Ugh, my head… No way." Said Sans as he sat up and found himself in a white void, with a tall skeleton in a white turtleneck and a long black coat, with two cracks in his skull, Wing Dings Gaster himself. "Gaster!" Called Sans.
"Now, is that anyway to greet your father?"Asked Gaster sarcastically.
"Sorry G, but I don't think formalities apply here anymore." Replied Sans.
"Fine, but I'm sure you have a lot of questions for me." Said Gaster.
"Yeah, for starters where are we? And what am I doing here?" Asked Sans.
"Well, we are in purgatory. A sort of world between worlds. There's not much of anything here, but you can observe the physical world if you know how."Responded Gaster. "As for how you got here, it would seem the power from Frisk's soul was too much for you to handle, and it killed you when you tried to reset."
"What!? I can't be dead! I have to stop Chara!" Yelled Sans.
"Calm down, you may be dead now, but Frisk's soul can easily change that. Look, your right eye has Frisk's power in it and your left eye had your own, because the two didn't fully combine, you won't be able to do everything that Frisk could, like access the pause menu. So, after you get out of here, don't try and reset again." Said Gaster. "All you have to do to get back to your newly reset world is to press the continue button."
Sans held out his hand and a continue button appeared. "Hey Gaster, is there any way to get you out of here?" Asked Sans.
Gaster was surprised by Sans's question but chuckled and replied, "Maybe I'll get out one day, but right now, there is something I must tell you." Sans took his hand away from the continue button and looked at Gaster. "While you cannot do everything, Frisk was able to do, because you have two souls instead of one, there are things you will be able to do that Frisk, or in this case, Chara will not be able to do. You will be able to stop her from using her powers, and you just might be able to drive Chara's soul out of Frisk's body."
"And how can I do that?" Asked Sans. Gaster then whispered something into Sans's ear. Then Sans pressed the continue button and returned to the ruins, filled with determination.
Sans's eyes still burned red and blue as he arrived in the ruins, standing next to Papyrus as Chara pulled her knife out of the illusion Asriel. "Determina- What just happened?" Asked Chara as she realized she was repeating the same moment from earlier. Asgore let out a cry of anger and prepared to charge at Chara but was stopped by a wall of bones.
"Don't do anything stupid." Said Sans.
"HUH, SANS, ISN'T THAT MY SCARF? BUT I'M WEARING IT RIGHT NOW!" Realized Papyrus. "AND WHY IS YOUR RIGHT EYE GLOWING NOW?"
"Uh, I'll explain later." Replied Sans.
A little white dog then ran up and bit Chara's ankle, surprising her and making her kick it off. "That's not what was supposed to happen." Said Chara.
"Chara!" Yelled Mettaton as he limped into the room.
"But you're not supposed to be here yet." Said Chara, before she was hit in the back by a yellow spear and punched by Mettaton-neo. "Now that… I recognize." Whimpered Chara as she jumped away from Undyne and Mettaton. Chara looked around the room and spotted Sans. "You! You changed this didn't you!?" Yelled Chara before she made her creepy face and charged at Sans. "YOU DIRTY COMEDIAN!"
Sans pushed Chara back with his telekinesis and stomped on the ground, causing a circle of bones to surround him and Chara. "I know you're in their Frisk! Don't worry, I'll get you out." Joked Sans. Alright, let's see if Gaster's idea works. Thought Sans, before he fired a blast of purple soul energy at Chara, but she dodged it and began charging at him. Oh… that's right, you're supposed to use your best move at the end of the fight, not the beginning. Thought Sans.
While Chara and Sans battled, Papyrus went over to Asriel and said, "HANG ON PRINCE ASRIEL, I'LL HEAL YOU."
"Don't waste your time… spirits can't be healed as easily as living things." Replied Asriel weakly.
"WELL, WHAT SHOULD I DO?" Asked Papyrus.
Sans was far more powerful now than he was previously, but Chara's anger made it about an even match. Sans fired three Gaster blasters that hit Chara and drove her back. "The fights not over yet, I've still got a bone to pick with you." Joked Sans.
"You… lousy… comedian." Panted Chara as she stopped making her creepy face. "Let's see who's laughing next time." Chara held out her hand and a reset button appeared.
"I don't think so pal." Said Sans as he snapped his fingers and made Chara's reset button shatter. Chara was surprised yet again, so Sans explained. "Sorry Chara, but you only have the power from Frisk's soul in you. I have both my soul and Frisk's, so while I can't reset, I can stop you from resetting no problem. In other words, if you die here, you stay dead." Chara growled before taking the chocolate bar she had packed out of her inventory and wolfing it down in an instant; the power from Frisk's soul instantly breaking it down into healing energy.
"Papyrus… please… don't let Chara die." Begged Asriel.
"HUH… NORMALLY I'M THE ONLY PERSON TO SAY THINGS LIKE THAT. WHY DON'T YOU WANT CHARA TO DIE?" Asked Papyrus.
"I know what she is… I know what she's done, but… I forgive her anyway." Whispered Asriel. "If every trace of who she was is gone, then why would she still be wearing the necklace I gave her?"
Papyrus looked and saw the golden heart necklace dangling from Chara's neck while she fought Sans. This isn't how it should be. This can't be how it ends. Thought Papyrus. "I'LL SAVE HER." Said Papyrus, filled with determination.
Sans and Chara stood opposite from each other, panting heavily. Even with the power from Frisk's soul, I'm getting tired. I'd better wrap this up fast. Thought Sans.
"So, I can't reset anymore?" Asked Chara.
"That's right." Replied Sans.
"Alright then… I guess it's finally time, to use my secret weapon." Said Chara as she took the heart on her locket in hand.
"Oh? So, you have a surprise technique? Then I guess I'd better match it." Replied Sans as he raised both his arms up.
"STOP." Ordered Papyrus as he ran between the two of them, making them stop in their attacks.
