Chapter Four
4.1
Rachel sighed exhaustedly as she looked at the two gay guys she had in her car. "I can't believe this, we had no time to rehearse or anything," she said before humming and trying to decide what to do. She had wanted to impress the people who were at the meeting for NYADA but she hadn't had her usual ample time to prepare and she needed to dazzle them. She looked to Blaine. "Why couldn't you tell us earlier about this?"
Blaine looked at them with a weak smile, "Sorry. I really didn't think that you'd be into it. It never crossed my mind but I'll know better next time."
"Excuse me," Rachel said with a firm expression on her face. "This just happens to be our senior year," she told them and Kurt sighed as he knew that there was no calming Rachel down and hopefully it wouldn't make Blaine feel worse and he'd just be able to shrug it off as per usual. "So, you would have had to tell us before this year for it to make much of a difference."
"I really only knew you guys around Valentines Day last year," Blaine said but then started coughing. He hadn't expected for his chest to feel pressure on it so early and he quickly got out of the car. He put a hand on his chest and Kurt quickly followed after him. He put a hand on Blaine's back, his eyes showing fear in them.
"Are you okay?" Kurt asked as he leaned forwards to try to get a better view of Blaine's face. He put a hand on Blaine's shoulder and tried rubbing his back to help him. After a little bit, Blaine had become stable and stood up with Rachel looking in her mirror and checking on her makeup instead of the two male teens.
"It was just a little dispute, Kurt, you don't have to be so emotional and so over…over protective," she said before getting out of the car, locking it, and then linked arms with Kurt and walked away with him, pulling him away from Blaine so fast that Kurt couldn't even take his boyfriend's hand.
"Rachel, I know that your life is to perform but we need to put a united front of the three of us. I made sure to look absolutely fabulous today and I think that Blaine is always gorgeous and you have…some sort of style now," he said and Rachel stopped and turned to him.
"I will walk all over your so-called sense of style to get into NYADA," she told him before smiling and then stepped backwards so she could link arms with Kurt on one side and Blaine on the other to get inside. She carried her CD player with it tapping against Kurt's leg the whole time. Blaine offered Kurt a small sympathetic smile as they walked into the auditorium.
As they got in, there was a group of teens their own age who approached them with huge grins. Blaine looked to some of them with a nod showing he was familiar with them and then looked at a boy who was slightly similar to Kurt. "Ah, Gavroche, right?" he asked.
"You remember me," Gavroche said as he put a hand on his chest as Rachel and Kurt looked to see Blaine standing there extremely comfortably. "Of course, the famed Blaine Anderson who has won the role of nearly every audition he has tried out for."
"Not all of them," Blaine said with a humble smile but Kurt and Rachel stared at him. He had already informed them of his experiences outside of the Warblers and despite how he had really only sung in winter showcases and theme parks and other smaller local work, he did have a reputation that spread through the nearby counties. He might not have the glamor of Rachel but he had worked hard for what he had achieved and his parents money had also opened some doors in terms of vocal classes, piano lessons, and so forth.
Kurt's focus was brought back to the people who had rushed over as a plucky girl with a red beret started to introduce herself.
"Well, I'm heard of Blaine Anderson of course but as for the two of you," she said with a wide grin to Kurt and Rachel. "Hi, I'm Harmony. What's your name, where are you from, and what are your credentials."
Rachel took a step forward and offered her hand out for Harmony to take, "Well, I'm Rachel –" she started but at this time a few others had jumped up and rushed towards them.
"I'm Hendleson," "I'm Canada"
"So, I know Blaine but I'm Gavroche, named after the feisty French street urchin from Les Mis." He said and Rachel looked back to Blaine with a lot of anger. He hadn't warned her for any of this and had walked into the room so casually as if he hadn't expected all of these people to rush towards them with all of their…stories.
"So, you know…Blaine?" Kurt asked with a raised eyebrow. "Even though the Warblers don't perform outside of -"
"Oh, I wasn't performing with the Warblers, I've been into singing and performing since I was younger so I sought out opportunities when…uh…when my brother was bragging about things which he could do," Blaine said as Rachel and Kurt looked at him. Kurt had heard something about a brother before but he was wracking his brain trying to remember what and Rachel looked at him shocked as if this was something that Blaine should be telling everyone upon introduction.
Harmony laughed, pulling their attention back to them, "I know you totally recognize me. It's 'cause I'm the Gerber baby. I've been acting since I was a fetus. Literally. An ultrasound of me was featured on "Murder She Wrote." Harmony laughed loudly but Gavroche approached Kurt.
"That's nothing, apparently the Anderson br-" he said and Blaine laughed weakly.
"No. That's - we don't need to go into that," he said before coughing a little and tried to hide it but Kurt kept staring at him a little panicked which was better than the jealousy he was showing a few minutes before that.
"Well, I'm starring as Rizzo in an all-male production of Grease. Welcome, welcome, welcome!" he said as he took Kurt's hand and led him to the seats so they could watch the performance. Blaine was about to sit next to Kurt who Gavroche had led to an end seat but Rachel quickly snatched the seat away from him.
Gavroche smiled as he looked at him and Rachel, "As my future husband, Robert Pattinson, always says, It's refreshing to get new blood."
Kurt looked at him puzzled before looking to Rachel and Blaine. Blaine seems to be looking away from them as if expecting the questions which they were going to ask him. He obviously had known about this for a while and he hadn't told either one of them where he was going. Yes, they didn't spend all their time together and Blaine had often told Kurt that he had commitments but Kurt had just believed Blaine may have been involved in a fight club.
"We've been meeting here each month since we were freshman. Literally. I mean, Blaine joined a little later but we all know him and have heard about him. He doesn't come to every meeting though," she said and Blaine laughed weakly before looking down.
"Warbler meetings," he tried to clarify but Rachel just continued to glare at him.
Rachel turned from Blaine and pulled Kurt's arm, yanking him back towards her as if showing ownership of him. "Well, actually, Kurt and I just found out about this on Monday," she said before shooting Blaine yet again another glare. "But speaking of refreshing, we put together a number that we just think you're gonna –"
Harmony turned away from her, completely ignoring her and clapped her hands to draw everyone's attention. "Places! You're just in time to see a little number we've been fussin' around with. Thank God there was a Bar Mitzvah here on Saturday and I convinced them not to strike the stage. So sit back, relax, and most importantly, enjoy," she said before looking to Blaine who gave her an apologetic smile.
"I'm going to watch," he said as both Kurt and Rachel stared at him with many questions of their own of how he could be a part of this and not have let them in on it. Harmony and the rest of the people there did a large and choreographed routine and Blaine could tell that both Kurt and Rachel felt horrible about this.
"You can find your own way home," Rachel whispered to Blaine as she sat there feeling extremely humiliated by the impressive dance number but also as if Blaine had stabbed her in the back for not telling her or warning her about it.
4.2
Rachel was true to her word and after yelling at Blaine about how he could have warned them what it was like and how he just wanted to make her too intimidated to even apply to the school and how he was personally responsible for destroying her hopes for the future. She had tried to take Kurt back to her car and drive off.
Blaine had walked away from her at that point and was using his phone to call for a cab to pick him up. He felt the rain hitting him from the back and his chest tightened. He coughed weakly as he felt the pricks of ice caused by the very cold rain and then heard a voice.
"I've got an umbrella," he said and Blaine looked up to see Kurt there. Kurt ran to him and stopped and Blaine looked down feeling dizzy.
"I'm sorry that I didn't s-say," he said but Kurt held the umbrella up over him and guided Blaine to where they could take shelter.
"That's not important right now," Kurt stressed. "We can talk later. What is important is you getting home where you can be safe and dry. As long as you are as healthy as possible, I don't care about the rest of it. We'll get to New York together somehow but I don't want to go alone."
