It was Sunday, July 20th, 1980, and James, Sirius, Remus, and Lily were all meeting at the Three Broomsticks at James's request.
"So, " said James eagerly, "As you all know, I'm due to become a father in less than two weeks. Part of becoming a father is naming your son or daughter. Well, Sirius, Remus, Lily, guess what, I've chosen a name for my son."
What is it?" chroused Sirius, Remus, and Lily excitedly.
"Drumroll please, " said James dramatically.
Sirius, Remus, and Lily obliged.
"The name of my son will be..." drew out James.
Sirius, Remus, and Lily waited with bated breath.
"Harry James Potter!" reveled an elated sounding James.
"James?" asked Lily curiously, "Is there any reason you chose James as the middle name rather than the first name. I know James is a name that has been used as a first name in the Potter line many times over the centuries?"
"James was my paternal grandfather's first name, " said James matter of factly, "Here's the deal. I'm cool with the concept of names becoming popular within families over the centuries and I like the name James. However, I don't believe in giving children the same first name as their parents. I feel like that by giving my son the first name of Harry rather than James that he can form his own identity independently of just being my son. Using James as the muddle name still allows me to keep it in the family. I'm cool with being named after my gramps but I'm glad that I have a different first name as my dad. "
"I agree with that, " said Remus thoughtfully, "But that doesn't answer the biggest question."
"Why did you choose the name Harry?" pressed Sirius.
"Simple as it sounds, " explained James, "It's a two way combination of the fact I really like the name Harry and that the name "Harry Potter" just "feels" right to me. Obviously, as a father, I'm going to give my son a name I like."
"Da, " said Sirius, Remus, and Lily together.
"It also feels right, " added James matter of factly, "I can't explain why, but I associate the name Harry with leadership qualities."
"You expect your son to grow to be a leader?" Sirius questioned James.
"I hope I'm wrong about this, because I don't want my son to have to carry any heavy burdens, " said James seriously, "But in my deepest heart of hearts, I have a gut feeling that my son Harry is going to have leadership thrust upon him and take up the mantle because he must. My heart and gut both tell me that Harry Potter will eventually go down as one of the best and most important leaders in magical history. "
James, Sirius, Remus, and Lily all shook their heads. They all hoped that James's prediction would prove to be wrong but they all had a sinking feeling that James's prediction would prove to be right.
Sirius decided to remind James that becoming a first time father was a happy moment and to embrace it.
"I bet Harry can't get here soon enough for you, James, " said Sirius eagerly.
"I can't wait to hold him, " said James with anticipation in his voice, "But let's try out the name. Let's all say Harry Potter."
"Harry Potter, " chroused James, Sirius, Remus, and Lily.
"That sounded great, " said James in a satisficed voice.
Harry Potter had his name.
