Hi, everyone! It's me, Michael, here! First, thank you to everyone for the Harry Potter Naming Thread surpassing the milestone of 9000 views. (9038 as of this nanosecond.) So, I suddenly had the idea for this one pop into my head tonight. I was watching the NBA Finals on TV and had muted the sound during a commercial break and just suddenly had this idea pop into my head. This one is very different. The previous stories on this thread are either from obscure characters or people very clearly on the good side. For this one, I for the first time, am featuring the Dark Side. In fact, this one is set at Malfoy Manor and many prominent Death Eaters are there.
It was Thursday May 22nd, 1980. and a meeting between Lord Voldemort and several of his premiant Death Eaters was taking placing at Malfoy Manor where they'd gathered around a long rectangular table.
Severus, Igor, Walden, Barty, Fenrir, Narcissa, Bellatrix, Lucius, and the Dark Lord himself were all seated at the table.
Lucius had planned a major announcement for this day and as the Dark Lord didn't have any plans for this particular day, he granted Lucius the opportunity to make what Lucius had claimed was big news.
"So, " said Voldemort coldly, "I believe you have news for us, Lucius?"
"Ah, yes!" said Lucius smoothly, "As you all know, I am due to become a father in two weeks. I have selected a name for my son ahead of his upcoming birth."
"Well, " said Voldemort silkily, "I'm sure we'd all be fascinated to hear what your son will be called and why you are naming him as you are."
"You see, " said Lucius proudly, "I myself am a bold, cunning, and ruthless wizard. Boldness, cunning, and ruthlessness are traits I dearly desire for my son to possess himself."
"Wouldn't want the apple to fall too far from the tree now, would we?" said Barty passionately, "Of course, I'm the lucky one. I've risen several trees from the rotten apple I was sewn from."
"We Death Eaters all know the value of ruthlessness," piped up Bellatrix with an insane grin on her face.
"Ah, you would know, Bella, " said Voldemort with a hint of jealousy in his voice, "Especially after recent events."
"I got to display my ruthlessness just last Sunday when I killed that three year old muggle girl with a quick Avada Kedavra," said Bellatrix with an evil laugh.
"We'll get the opportunity to use our ruthlessness again quite soon, " said Barty lustily, "The Longbottoms won't know what hit them after they've been subjected to our merciless Cruiatus Curses."
"Sometimes torture can be just as much fun as killing, " smirked Severus, "But, Lucius, what name shall you give your upcoming son?"
"Draco, " said Lucius boastfully, "My son shall be known as Draco Malfoy."
"Well, " said Narcissa thoughtfully, "The name Draco must have a very specific meaning if that is what Lucius is naming his son. Lucius would never saddle his son with a random name out of nowhere."
"Perhaps Lucius can share what that meaning is with us, " ordered Igor impatiently.
"Ah, yes, " explained Lucius, puffing out his chest, "You see, Draco is the Latin word for dragon."
"No question that dragons are very bold and fierce creatures with a nice side of cunning, " said Walden bluntly.
"And " grinned Fenrir, "Dragons are amongst the most ruthless creatures that exist on planet earth."
"Exactly, " said Lucius arrogantly, "Dragons are ruthless creatures. They spine, they posion, they burn. Dragons can kill slowly and make their victims suffer before they die, or they can kill fast and be rid of their victims before the victims even know dragons are targeting them."
"There's nothing a dragon won't do, " added Fenrir, "They're savage beasts and they're quite greedy too."
"Of course, " sighed Voldemort, "I'd forgotten how greedy dragons are. Of course, a Malfoy would have a dragon based name as rich and greedy as they are."
Lucius smirked and spat out, "I don't mind that, but it's the savage ruthlessness of dragons that is inspiring my decision to give my son the dragon based name of Draco. My son shall be known as Draco Malfoy. "
"Will Draco Malfoy become a Death Eater?" demanded Voldemort frostily.
"I absolutely will raise Draco to be a Death Eater. I will teach him our values of pure blood supremacy, lust, and ruthlessness from a young age. My lord, I promise to raise my son to understand our values and I promise to make sure you are his hero."
"Good, good, " said Voldemort with a mirthless laugh.
"Will Draco ever be ruthless enough to kill a three year old girl without thinking about it?" Bellatrix challenged Lucius.
"In time, Bella, in time, " replied Lucius.
"Lucius, " demanded Voldemort suddenly, "If it ever came to it, would you sacrifice your son for my cause?"
"Yes, my lord, " promised Lucius, "My first and foremost loyalty is to you, my lord. I could always have another son down the road to keep the Malfoy line intact if I ever need to sacrifice the first one. My lord, I promise you that Draco Malfoy will be at your service for whatever you need him for. He will be raised in a manner consistent with who we are and what we are."
"Excellent, " said Voldemort in a satisfied voice.
"I am making the perfect choice in naming my son Draco Malfoy, " said Lucius in a cocky voice, "The world will know for another generation what boldness, cunning, savageness and ruthlessness are all about. "
"If Draco serves me faithfully, " said Voldemort silkily, "He shall be honored beyond his dreams. If Draco fails me, I shall have to exterminate him. Draco's ultimate fate depends entirely on how well and how faithfully he serves me, just like all of you."
"All of us?" protested Fenrir, "I have served you faithfully. Why can't I have a Dark Mark?"
"Silence, Fenrir, " said Voldemort dismissively, "You are filthy and dirty. Be grateful that you are useful for spreading some of your filth and dirt to our enemies because if you weren't I'd have knocked you off a long time ago."
Fenrir fell silent.
"But, " said Voldemort hopefully, "With any luck our newest dragon will earn his stripes and prove himself worthy of the Dark Mark."
"He will, " piped up Lucius with supreme and utter confidence, "I am naming my son Draco to honor the traits of boldness, cunning, and ruthlessness. In time, Draco Malfoy will live up to his name. Draco Malfoy shall be the most ruthless wizard of his generation."
A/N: Draco's Malfoy's birthday is known to be June 5th, 1980, so this is set a few weeks before then. Love you all - Michael.
