Meanwhile, Michelle had found a bedroom two doors down the hall from where Kat was staying. Michelle put her bag of clothes down on the floor, and then she took her jacket off. Casper stayed invisible in a wall as he saw Michelle take her right arm out of one of the jacket sleeves. The invisible ghost silently gasped when he saw it – a big scar on Michelle's upper right arm. Casper floated away and made his way back to Kat's room, while Michelle touched the scar on her arm.
Touching that scar made Michelle think of that fatal day with her and her mother. It was the last time she would ever see with her mother alive…
Denver, Colorado – February of 1995
Several months before moving to Whipstaff Manor, Michelle was riding alongside her mother, Amelia, in a 1994 Toyota Camry. There was a blizzard outside, but Amelia had to run some errands while Kat and James were doing other errands. "Okay, Michelle," Amelia smiled as she drove the car, "We still have to get a prescription your father has at the pharmacy, and then I have to stop at the bank to write a check. Hopefully soon, your father and I will set you up with your own checking account, and then we just might get you your own credit card."
Michelle's eyes widened with excitement as she repeated, "My own credit card?"
"Yes," Amelia grinned as she drove on, "That way, if you ever do plan on moving out and going to college, you could have your own money to manage." As she looked out her side of the front window, she sighed, "Oh dear, I wish this storm would lighten up a bit."
Michelle looked out her window and said, "Me too. I also wish I didn't have to listen to boring talk shows on the radio all the time."
Amelia rolled her eyes, but then she said, "It's okay. I'm done with this show, too. Not much to talk about, anyway. You may put it on music if you'd like."
Michelle smiled and then turned the knob on the radio to change stations. She then found a station playing Africa by Toto. "I love this song!" Michelle gasped.
"Oh, so do I!" Amelia smiled, "I remember how you used to dance along with it all the time when you were a little girl!" The mother and daughter smiled at each other, and then sang along to the lyrics as Amelia drove on:
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man on the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say: Hurry, boy, it's waiting there for you!
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had!
At the last few words of the chorus, Amelia briefly turned her head towards Michelle as they sang on. But then, things happened so quickly right there and then. The car's tires began to swerve as they drove over a patch of ice on the road, and then the car began to drive off the road! "Mom, look out!" Michelle screamed as she looked on at what was going on in horror.
Amelia took a firm hold of the steering wheel and tried getting back in place, but it was too late; the car was skidding down the road until finally, it crashed into a signpost. The sign collapsed down and landed on the car's windshield, creating a big crack! The crack was so big that a piece of broken glass shot out and darted towards Michelle; the girl screamed as the blade cut her upper right arm…
Michelle's thoughts were interrupted when she heard the sound of a thud. "Kat?" she wondered to herself. Immediately, she put her jacket back on and rushed out of her room to go down the hall and check on her sister.
James saw Michelle rush past him and asked, "Michelle? Are you okay?"
The older Harvey sister didn't answer him as she reached Kat's room. Kat was lying on the floor as if she had fainted. "Kat?" Michelle asked with surprise as she saw her sister, "Kat, are you okay?"
But just as she was kneeling down to examine her sister, Michelle saw a familiar ghost with some swashing noises inside his belly! The older girl silently gasped and put her hand over her mouth as Casper did like a wet towel to squeeze the water out of him and onto Kat in order to revive her. Kat slowly opened her eyes and looked up to see Casper hovering over her. "Better?" the ghost asked.
Kat got a better view of him and saw that this was a ghost! She screamed very loudly, and then Michelle joined her. Casper also screamed at the girls before he flew off.
"GIRLS?" James's voice called from outside the room. Dr. Harvey ran into the room and saw his daughters with looks of fright on their faces. "Honey?" James said with concern as he ran over to embrace Kat and Michelle.
"Dad! Dad!" Kat breathed, "We saw a ghost! It was a real ghost!"
"Shhh, shhhh!" James tried calmly his daughter, "Slow down, what did you say?"
"You heard her!" Michelle cried out, "It was an actual, floating, white-sheeted ghost! He was dripping water onto Kat!"
"Michelle and I saw a ghost!" Kat said to her father, "A-and the head – it was round and white, and we could see through it, and…"
"Believe us, Dad!" Michelle begged, "I was going to check on her, because I heard a thud, and she was lying on the ground, and this-this-this ghost came outta nowhere and…"
"Now, maybe," James started.
"Dad, please!" Kat pleaded, "We do not think you're as crazy as we thought you were – I promise!"
"Oh, no, no, no, no!" James calmly said as he put his hand gently onto his younger daughter's cheek, "But just remember – ghosts can't hurt you, okay? They're simply spirits with unfinished business, alright?" Kat and Michelle tried saying more, but James said, "Now, let's just see about this ghost, alright? Come here, you two." He led the girls to a door leading to the bathroom and said, "See? No ghosts there. I'll check here…" He looked under the bed and said, "Nope. No ghosts under there. Let me check over here." He walked over to the closet door, and then opened it. "There, see?" James said, failing to notice Casper floating inside the closet with a smile.
"Uh, Dad?" Michelle asked nervously.
James slowly turned his head and then saw Casper. "Pleasure to meet you, sir," the little ghost smiled as he held his hand out.
James nodded before he let out a scream and shut the door!
A few minutes later, James had Kat in one arm as she was flung over his shoulder, and he had Michelle's left hand in his other hand. "Dad, let go of me!" Michelle yelled with annoyance.
"Dad, put me down!" Kat ordered as James ran with her and Michelle, "What are you doing with us? I can walk, you know!"
"Dad, let go of me this instant!" Michelle angrily gritted through her teeth.
James opened up a door that led to a closet, and he brought his girls in with him. As he muttered to himself, Kat said nervously, "Uh, Dad? We're in a closet!"
"I can't breathe!" groaned Michelle.
James turned a light on and said, "Right. Now, I want you girls to stay in here, no matter what you hear, okay? Michelle, can you watch your sister?"
Michelle did a face palm as James turned the light off and then opened the door.
"Wait!" Kat said to her father, "Dad, I'm sorry."
"For what?" asked James.
"For not believing you." Kat answered, "And thinking you were a total loser."
Michelle shrugged her shoulders and mumbled, "I guess I'm sorry, too."
"Oh, honey," James said, "Apologize later!" He then closed the door and ran off down the hall.
"Now what?" Michelle huffed.
