Lamar Roper was a wise and thoughtful man.
He wasn't an avid reader per se, more of an avid thinker.
Lamer Roper loved to think things over and come up with his own conclusions and opinions.
He didn't much value "reading and remembering" which he considered to be fake intelligence.
Instead, he liked to think about things and form his own views on them.
He was wise too.
Wise enough to understand that sometimes the most obvious answer really was the truth. Wise enough to expand on his existing knowledge of things by provoking himself with questions about ideas and concepts. Wise enough to understand that you could learn to do things better that you were already doing them by guessing, testing, revising, and creating your own niche.
Lamar's creativity and imagination had allowed him to flourish into the top student in his year at Hogwarts at both Charms and Potions. On the other hand, he'd struggled with the more rigid and strict subject of Transfiguration and outright failed his History of Magic O.W.L., a subject heavily focused on reading and remembering.
He was now a Potion Maker for St. Mungo's where staff, Healers, and patients alike all raved at the extraordinary quality and dependability of his potions.
Now, however, the thinking man had something else to think about.
He had a daughter due in two weeks. He needed to get cracking on finding a name.
He had a special room at St, Mungo's where he did all his work as a Potion Maker. He was the only person allowed in that room.
So, he'd come to work a little early so he could sit quietly and comfortably at his desk before the day's work needed to begin and give some thought to what he wanted his daughter's name to be.
"The thing I most hope for in my daughter," said Lamar to himself, "Is that she will be wise and thoughtful. It is my deepest desire that my daughter will someday discover my brands of wisdom: accepting that the obvious is sometimes the truth, building on existing knowledge through thought and questioning, learning to do things better by using guess, test, and revise, finding niches, and being creative and imaginative. "
He realized though, that now was NOT the time to be TOO imaginative.
He didn't want to stick his daughter with a weird and unusual name that would get her made fun of. But he didn't want the name to be random either.
And then it came to him that the best strategy was to grant his daughter a common girls' name with a meaning that reflected his values and hopes.
He also remembered something; he'd read books on the meaning of baby names recently, as such books were readily available at St. Mungo's
He may not be an expert at reading and remembering, especially when it came to things like goblin rebellions, but that didn't mean he forgot everything he ever read either.
In thinking back on the books he'd read about baby names and their meanings, there were a handful of names whose meanings stood out to Lamar. Of course, for this decision, he need only consider girls' names.
Lamar leisurely went through a few names in his mind before landing on the right one.
"SOPHIE!" yelled Lamar though he was a room by himself, "Sophie means wisdom. The wisest conclusion I can come to here is selecting Sophie as my daughter's name. My daughter shall be known as Sophie Roper."
Lamar felt his insides radiate. His heart was glowing hotter the interior of the sun.
Sometimes, after thinking something out and reaching his conclusion, Lamar would feel very confident he'd gotten a particular thing right. This was one of those times.
There was no name he would rather his daughter carry than Sophie. He was sure of that.
He felt peaceful, happy, content, and confident. His heart of hearts told him that naming his daughter Sophie was the right decision.
Lamar was normally a very patient man.
Now, however, he said softly, "Sophie Roper, I can't wait until you become a part of the world. I can't wait for us to share the Ropers brand of wisdom together as dad and daughter. Please get here soon, Sophie Roper."
