calderoneric758: Yeah the phone keypads kinda bad, aren't they? Anyway, both of those are secrets for now :)

JtBlackhawk3198: I hear ya, and don't worry I had actually gone into this fight with that in mind. Glass can affect Wireframe, but she can't damage it in any way.

SomeCallMeDrunk: I got a whole plan for Itsuki, that poor guy is about to go through the absolute wringer. Well, I guess he isn't a poor guy since he did kinda kill hundreds of people in a wrath fueled rampage...

D3lph0xL0v3r: Glass, is not a stand user, and she cannot damage Wireframe in any way, all will be explained in this chapter (or next chapter, I can't remember... whoops)

A Shield's Stand

Chapter 15: Shattered Perceptions

Glass
Lv: ?

Glass inspected the spectral creature she held back with her one hand. It wasn't anything she had ever seen before, and she doubted anyone else of her kind had seen a creature like this either. Like her, it flowed with life energy, yet its own life energy was… different. It's form was thinner than her own and it held less energy than any spirit she had seen. Yet, it still seemed to function as a conscious being. The entity wasn't fully independent it seemed as its life energy was both identical and directly tied to the life energy of the same Shield Hero she held back with her other hand. It seemed the two were connected on a far deeper level than any other spirit to exist in her own world.

Well, it mattered not. They were still an enemy she had to eliminate.

Glass pushed her arms from her body, sending the entity gliding away before it phased through the solid wood of the ship and the hero sliding back to where his comrades had grouped up to meet her as an enemy. The entity didn't take long to phase through the floor and float near its master.

It seemed her actions were unusual as the Shield Hero and the strange weasel girl by his side were taken by surprise when she stopped such a simple attack. However, none of the others seemed as confused as they did. So the question must be asked, why were they the only ones who reacted to the brief clash. The Shield Hero and the weasel were quick to school their features back into their combat stances.

'Good,' Glass thought, 'Opponents that can actually fight.'

Meanwhile the rest of Naofumi's party were readying themselves for a tough fight. They saw Glass stick her hand up in the air for seemingly no reason before Rifana and Naofumi widened their eyes in shock. That meant the woman, for whatever reason, could see Wireframe. Their biggest element of surprise had not only disappeared but had been effectively countered.

"Well, I'll admit, of all the heroes, I was not expecting the Shield Hero to be the first to attack me," Glass spoke with a wry smile. "Whether that speaks to the recklessness of the Shield Hero or the cowardice of the rest, I do not know."

Neither Ren, Naofumi, nor their respective parties even reacted to the verbal jab. They knew this woman was not one to be taken lightly as a foe, rushing in blindly would lead to their demise. If they were going to fight her, it needed to be with a plan and one that would deny her any chances of escape, since she seemed to be somehow tied to the wave, and they could use all the information they could gather. The other two heroes, however, were not as attuned to the woman's obvious superiority in all aspects of combat. Itsuki's demented smirk turned to more of a grimace, but he held himself back for the time being. Motoyasu wasn't as intelligent, nor was his party, as they charged forward, their weapons and magic at the ready in a poor attempt to overwhelm her.

The fight, if you could even call it that, was over within seconds. Glass revealed a pair of fans from her kimono's sleeves and darted forward, meeting the spear hero's charge with her own. She thrust her left fan forward and with a small tap sent the white knight careening towards the back rafters of the ship. The girls of his party exclaimed in shock and worry before they charged magic spells to assault the woman who dared attack the hero they 'worshipped'. Their attacks were ignored plainly as the woman easily deflected them with a simple swing of her fans. Glass darted through the middle of them, Motoyasu's party being quickly taken from the fight before Glass reappeared before Motoyasu. Motoyasu attempted a blind swing in his panic, but the heavily telegraphed swing was easily halted by Glass.

She looked at the hero with disdain, "Your armor is a true work of masters. It is a shame it was granted to a fool who doesn't know how to wield his weapon." Glass vanished, reappearing behind the spear hero and delivering a devastating kick to the back of his head, knocking the spear hero out efficiently. Glass held a disappointed look on her face, "Are all you heroes as weak and foolish as this one?"

Ren decided to step forward, "I'm grateful to say that we aren't. Before we fight, I want to ask some questions. Why-"

"You have earned nothing, Sword Hero," Glass cut the hero off, "I shall not grant you any answers unless you can earn my respect as a warrior." She readied her fans.

In response, her eight enemies readied their own weapons. Looking through her adversaries, Glass identified the largest threats to her instantly. The Bow Hero wielded an unusual flaming bow, the flames which she could feel contained cursed energy. She couldn't allow any of his flames to even touch her or she will begin to lose the fight fast. However, the hero's stance and draw were those of a novice's. He likely had little ability to fight outside of his powerful weapon. He had to be her first target. The Sword Hero and his scaled partner were both capable fighters, based on how they held their weapons, but they likely wouldn't be able to stand up to her in combat.

The raccoon girl seemed to be adept at swordsmanship but Glass could still tell there was a veritable difference in their strength. The small winged girl would be an interesting foe to fight. Glass had seen the unassuming girl transform into a much larger bird creature when fighting the kraken and the soul eater. Her power in either form was largely unknown, but based on her appearance in her bird form, she was more of a defensive fighter than an offensive, so her defense breaking skills would be her answer to the girl. The weasel girl likely had a trick of her own comparable to the entity the Shield Hero possessed. Glass would have to be wary of her. The massive woman looked to be far stronger in strength than that of any of the other fighters. Even with the level disparity between the two, taking a blow from her would likely be an end to the fight. Finally, there was the Shield Hero. His legendary defensive capabilities were going to be her largest hurdle in the fight, seeing as her fighting style and skillset were tailored to quick and decisive blows to single enemies. He would be able to save his allies from such blows which would only serve to prolong the fight. And if that wasn't enough, he had access to that strange entity she had fended off before.

This would be an interesting fight.

The fight began with Elina stepping forward and activating her skill, "Bloody Sunday!" Her war axe crashed into the ground, splintering the boards of the ship all along the floor, making the battlefield difficult to traverse for the speedster she had seen the fan wielding woman to be.

With that one action, they all sprang into action. Naofumi grabbed Rifana's hand and used Bullrush, using the momentum to skid around to the backside of Glass, Rifana swinging her axe as they quickly closed the distance. Riza transformed to her land dragon form, Ren climbing atop in one fluid motion as they took off for Glass. Meanwhile, Wireframe grabbed Raphtalia's hand, phasing her from view as she disappeared into the fractured floorboards of the ship while Itsuki fired several of his cursed arrows into the sky before drawing one more and taking aim at Glass.

Glass was quick to respond, almost imperceptibly so. She blocked and countered Rifana's axe swing with one fan, launched a gust of wind into the air to knock the cursed arrows off course with the other fan, then used both fans to hold back Riza's head on charge before grappling the large dragon and tossing her and its rider over her shoulder. Acting quickly, she dodged a cursed arrow fired by Itsuki, closing the distance with the bow wielder and disarming the hero. One more blow and the Bow Hero was launched off the deck of the ship, falling and disappearing into the canopy below.

Glass sensed a powerful blow approaching her from behind, expertly ducking below the war axe that threatened to bisect her. She used her fans to block the kick Elina followed up with, neither combatant moving anywhere from the clash. She pushed off, the titan of a woman losing her balance temporarily as her foot was thrown out from under her. It was then Raphtalia appeared from the floorboards, Wireframe preparing a flurry of punches and her sword racing for Glass's exposed neck.

Glass parried the sword strike and pushed Raphtalia off her. Wireframe's punches flew towards Glass's body, yet none of them connected as Glass's fans staved them off. She found a gap in the blows and levied a powerful roundhouse kick into the stand's temple. Naofumi felt his head jerk to the left along with Wireframe's.

Glass backed away as the group of warriors all prepared another series of attacks. She tsked in annoyance, "You all are very well coordinated. Had that been any other foe, they would have been overwhelmed and defeated swiftly. For that I must commend you. However, none of you hold the strength to damage me." It was then Glass saw their plan. Her foes were attempting to conceal the weasel from her, for what reason was unknown, but there was a chance if it was an ability that required charge, then it would be strong enough to hurt her should it connect.

"Trying to overwhelm me with cheap tactics? You heroes truly have no shame!" Glass shouted out as she activated her skill, "Reverse Four Seasons!"

The skill activated, sending out dozens of incredibly sharp glowing blades at her foes.

"Airstrike Shield!"

A glowing shield spawned before the two parties, blocking most of the projectiles, but the ones that got through clashed against the weapons of her foes. Glass rushed forward, a single slice shattering the translucent shield in two. Ren tried to attack while she was in midair.

"Meteor Slash!"

The skill sent out a large bladed projectile at the woman while the hero and Riza surrounded and charged at Glass. The blade did little to nothing as it was easily torn apart by Glass, but it still carried out its intended purpose, momentarily distracting Glass long enough for the two to get close enough to attack. Riza turned to her human form, grabbing and attempting to hold Glass's left arm while Ren thrust his sword at her right. The second fan blocked the blade, but Ren's plan still worked as intended.

"Dragon's Delight!"

The legendary sword glowed a vibrant red before it caught fire and spewed its flames over the kimono wearing enemy, pushing the midair assailant away from the group.

"Nice job Ren!" Naofumi congratulated his fellow hero on providing them some more time, "Rifana, are you ready?"

Rifana grinned a cheeky smirk as she nodded her head, "Yup! I got a real juicy one all thought up! I've Been A Fool." Her third eye opened as she began to recite. Glass used her fans to extinguish the flames.

The skill of this warrior,

It puts our own to shame.

Share her techniques between us,

Add it to our own names!

Rifana's eye lit up, blinding Glass as she felt the light wash through her. She felt little fear from being blinded, as her other senses would be more than enough to help her block any attacks while blinded. It was the feeling of loss that gave her pause. She gripped at her chest as she felt a part of her feel as though it was splitting in two. She tried to resist whatever skill her foe had levied at her, but it was useless. Already, her fan's abilities had been copied and spread between the members of the Shield and Sword Hero's parties.

"Nice job Rifana! Raphtalia, give us some covering fire! Silver, you and I are on guard duty! Riza, Elina, see what you can do about limiting her mobility further! Ren, you and Rifana are our main offence, so keep the pressure on her!" Naofumi took command.

"I'll keep you covered!"

"You got it Naofumi!"

Ren nodded.

"Sure thing, Shieldy!"

"Ok, Daddy!"

"Fine, but only because my dear Ren says so."

With that, they all split off into action. Raphtalia jumped back into the air and activated her newly acquired skill, "Reverse Four Seasons!" Her sword glowed before she slashed outward, sending a hail of projectiles towards the stunned Glass. Glass shook off her shock at seeing her own (supposedly exclusive to her) technique thrown back at her and blocked the blades that came near her. The rest that missed crash into the floorboards, sending clouds of debris and dust into the air, obscuring the otherworldly woman's sight temporarily.

Glass's senses darted around her, searching for any hint of attack. They suddenly picked up on movement from above her, and Glass darted to the side as Elina rocketed into the ground, her war axe nowhere to be seen. Her senses screamed at her to dodge, and she listened, the war axe, Elina had tossed on her descent narrowly missing turning her into mincemeat. But, the massive axe did manage to block her escape from the back, limiting her movement somewhat.

Riza cried out as she emerged from the dust cloud in her human form, Glass thrust her fans at her when Silver hopped out from where she was concealed in Riza's jacket, transforming to her filolial form and trapping the fan wielder's weapons under her armored wings. Ren, Rifana, and Naofumi popped in and all sent their own attacks or traps at the woman.

"Hundred Slashes!"

"Blind Rage!"

"Dog Bite!"

Two dog heads extended from Naofumi's shield, biting into her arms, making her struggle to get her fans just that much harder. With no way to defend herself, Glass let go of her fans and maneuvered left as far as she could with the dog heads biting her just as the wave of attacks from the Sword Hero and a now stronger Rifana crashed into where she had been standing.

It was then she felt a wave of pressure from her senses. All her foes surrounded her in an instant. From her north, the Sword Hero had a flaming slash charged and ready to burn her down. From her north-east, the weasel girl had her third eye opened, her axe at the peak of its swing. From her east, the transforming winged girl was in her bird form, her whole body shining in its metallic glory. From her south-east, the raccoon girl had her sword in its sheath, her eyes glinting dangerously. From her south, the Shield Hero's entity darted in, its fists locked in. From her south-west, the Shield Hero held his shield aloft, a layer of rope tied to it. From her west, the giant woman swung her war axe down, her smile full of adrenaline. From her north-west, the transforming scaled woman swung her clawed hands towards her.

It was a perfect attack.

The attacks all crashed in the center, sending a plume of debris flying into the air. The adventurers all pulled back their weapons, and went on guard as they saw Glass was nowhere to be seen.

"It has occurred to me, that I simply cannot defeat you all as of now. You are much too overwhelming in your numbers and individual strength. For that, I respect your combat prowess. As I promised, I will answer select questions you give to me on my honor as a warrior," Glass spoke from her spot standing atop the skull figurehead.

The group shared some glances before sheathing their weapons or relaxing their guard.

Ren was the first to ask a question, "Why did you attack us? We're trying to save this world."

Glass raised her finger, "You're trying to save this world, Sword Hero." That earned some surprised looks from the group.

Elina was next, "You're weapons weren't exactly conventional, lady. They weren't anything regularly considered to be a proper weapon and when you let go of them, they disappeared into sparkling dust, so tell me what they are." Silver shrieked in surprise as she saw that the fans she had trapped had actually disappeared.

Glass responded quickly, "I cannot. I don't want you all to learn of my abilities so that you may counter them in our next fight."

Naofumi then asked, "The Soul Eater died, but the wave hasn't ended. Are you a part of the waves?"

Glass answered, "That is something I cannot answer, our fates rely on it."

Raphtalia followed up, "Your fates?"

"I fight for the safety of my people and to protect them, I must kill the four cardinal heroes of legend. That is my goal."

Before any other questions could be asked, Glass looked to the red fractured sky as a loud gong rang out. "It seems we've run out of time to talk." She turned to Ren and Naofumi, "The next time we meet, the battle won't be so far in your favor, Sword and Shield Heroes."

The ship they stood on began to rock as it descended, losing whatever fuel source it used. Glass floated off into the sky, leaving behind two parties wondering at the battle that had just occurred.

Just like the last wave, in the same hour as the wave had ended, Naofumi and Ren returned to the village they worked so hard to defend to begin recovery and rebuilding efforts for the people living there. Compared to the last wave, the damages and injuries were far lower in number. That isn't to say there weren't any amount of deaths. Several had died protecting others from blows and a certain unlucky few were just caught in a spot they just couldn't escape. Even still, Naofumi and his party tried to keep a set of smiles on their faces as they went around helping those injured and discussing future plans with the local lord.

It was then a group of darkly dressed women essentially teleported beside them, scaring the lord and making Naofumi bring his shield up for a fight.

The one closest to him, which Naofumi assumed was the leader, raised their hands in an apparently universal sign of meaning no harm. "Shield Hero, this one asks that you meet with a representative of the queen, degozaru."

Naofumi didn't lower his guard, "A representative of the queen? Why is it just now they want to speak to me?"

The leader spoke once more, "You can be a difficult man to reach, Sir Shield Hero, degozaru. This one found now to be the best time for you two to meet, degozaru."

Naofumi sighed from exhaustion as he lowered his shield, giving the group of five a small kind smile, "Sorry about that. Today has been kind of hectic," his face gained a bit of a sharp edge to it, "I'll meet this representative under four conditions. One, I will only meet with them after I have finished my business here. Two, I want the Sword Hero to join me. Three, when we leave this town, I want the queen to send support here, whether it's through knights protecting them, sending contractors to aid in rebuilding efforts, or just some financial support. Four, I want the queen to hunt down and locate the Bow Hero, right now, he's far too dangerous to be left to his own devices. If you can promise me those four things, I'll meet with your representative."

"Those requests are simple enough to complete, Sir Shield Hero, you have our word we will complete them to your satisfaction, degozaru," the leader spoke without hesitation.

Elina came walking around the corner before jumping back in actual shock. "Hey Shieldy? Why are there five of the Queen's personal shadows here?"

Naofumi pats her on the back, drawing out a small glare from the much larger woman, "They just want me to talk some stuff out with a representative of the queen. While I'm gone, I'm gonna trust you four and the knights to make sure everything here goes smoothly, alright?"

Elina just shook her head, turned around and walked away, "You would think I would be used to this by now, but nope!"

The group of six just watched her walk away with deadpanned faces while Naofumi gave a loud laugh at the woman's actions. "Yeah, at this point I can understand that reaction."

After meeting up with Ren and explaining the situation to him, the two heroes followed three of the shadows to wherever this representative would be… which was apparently deep in the forest. Honestly, Naofumi was a little amazed at how they got Riza to agree to separating from Ren for a bit. It was kind of like watching someone trick a dog by fake throwing a ball, but instead of a ball it was a promise for a date.

Each step felt tenser than the last as the meeting here would most likely lead to a lot of trouble in the future, or the way to avoid a lot of trouble in the future. Eventually the five came to a clearing where they saw a little table set up and a little lavender haired girl idly drinking tea. Ren looked shocked but Naofumi just looked resigned.

They approached the table and the girl caught sight of them. She politely stood up and curtsied to the two heroes, which Naofumi returned with a bow (Ren copying Naofumi but awkwardly). The girl met the eyes of the heroes, gesturing to the table behind her. Ren and Naofumi took their seats and poured themselves a cup of tea each.

After a brief time to just enjoy the tea, the girl spoke up from her own seat, "It is nice to meet two of the four heroes, even under circumstances such as these. Sir Naofumi, Sir Ren, my name is Melty, second and crown daughter of Queen Mirellia of Melromarc."

"Well, it's very nice to meet you Melty, my name is Naofumi Iwatani, and I'm the Shield Hero, as you already know," Naofumi gave off one of his signature smiles, doing his best to ease the tension at the table.

"Same here, princess Melty. My name is Ren Amaki, and I'm the Sword Hero," Ren just looked uncomfortable.

Melty nodded slightly at the introductions before getting to business, "Now, I'll be quite brief with you two, as I'm sure you two both want to leave and get back to your groups, Sir Naofumi, both I and my mother both wish to offer you our most sincere apologies for the events that have occurred to you at the hands of my family. While I'm admittedly not entirely informed of all the charges levelled at you, I have both seen and been told enough of your character to know those charges are false. Once my mother returns, we will do our utmost to clear your name."

Naofumi's smile dimmed a little at the mention of his plethora of charges, "Thank you, but I do have to ask why something as small as a set of apologies required a personal one on one visit before your mother even returned. So may I ask truly why you are here?"

Melty's eyes twinged. It was almost imperceptible, but it was there and Ren knew the rest of this meeting was likely going to be rough.

Melty took a sip of her tea and gathered her thoughts, "It is true, the apologies were not the main instigator for this meeting. It was mostly to reaffirm our thoughts of your character."

Naofumi raised a brow, "My character?"

Melty nodded, "You have forged yourself somewhat of an… unofficial backing, one that rivals that of even the church of our nation. Your deeds across the country and in Shieldfreeden have garnered quite the positive feedback from a vast majority of the citizens you have interacted with or indirectly saved. So much so that they may begin to violently revolt should you call for it. With an unofficial army that large, it was imperative that we discerned the character of the one who leads it."

Ren's mind was simply blown. He knew Naofumi was probably the single kindest person he had ever met but for him to have somehow amassed an army of supporters just by being himself is, quite frankly, fucking insane. What was even more insane was that Naofumi barely reacted to the princess's words.

Naofumi rubbed his chin idly, "So, to put it simply, you're afraid."

Ren struggled to keep his tea down.

Melty struggled a bit to put her thoughts together, "We wish to battle the waves with a united front. The royalty of Melromarc just wish to avoid a civil war during the midst of the wa-"

"If the royalty of Melromarc really wished to battle the waves, then they wouldn't have slandered my name in the first place." Naofumi cut off Melty, "Raping the first princess, attacking knights unprovoked, resisting arrest, mistreating slaves, arson, hundreds of counts of first degree murder." Melty flinched with each word, "To be perfectly honest, Princess Melty, the only reason I haven't already died is because I'm lucky. I'm lucky to have an ability that is exclusive to my homeworld. I'm lucky I wasn't stabbed to death on my first day in the city. I'm lucky to have found Rifana and Raphtalia when I did. I'm lucky I was let into the guild where I met Elina. I'm lucky to have Silver as a daughter. I'm lucky to walk away from battles where I lost enough blood to kill men twice my size. I'm lucky to have Ren on my side instead of against it. I'm lucky to escape a wildfire that burnt down an eighth of your capital unscathed. I'm lucky that Rifana didn't die when she was shot through the heart by an arrow."

Melty looked afraid as Naofumi glared down at the princess. Ren had never seen Naofumi glare before, it wasn't something he would want to see again.

Naofumi pinched the bridge of his scarred nose and sighed, "Melty, I don't enjoy being angry, but your family has already caused untold amounts of damage to your own kingdom and my family by extension. The heroes need to work together to fight the waves to protect the world. What your sister and father have done is fragment the four of us. I managed to patch things up with Ren, but Motoyasu is under your sister's thumb and Itsuki… I don't know what happened to him. What I'm trying to say is there's a lot of work that needs to be done, and I'm going to do it no matter what it takes. And if that involves forcibly removing you all from power to protect the people I care for… then it will be done."

Naofumi calmly grasped his tea cup, bringing it to his lips and taking a sip, the frustration slipping from his face as he tasted the divine liquid.

Melty took a moment to calm herself down from the frankly terrifying Shield Hero. "O-of course, Sir Shield Hero. Rest assured that the queen and the crown princess support you in your actions. We just wanted to reaffirm that our support wasn't misguided. Now, Sir Ren, while this meeting wasn't originally intended for you, I do have a request to make of you. My father has seen a recording of you two battling the boss of the wave and the woman who appeared after it. Following that viewing he has decided to cut you off from any further financial support. Tomorrow, I wish to meet with you to give you your rewards for your efforts in the wave." Her words were barely spoken with confidence, Naofumi's threat making speaking without a shaky voice near impossible.

Ren cleared his throat, "Y-yeah, me and Riza will be there."

The next day was spent in the town they had defended, Shinto Logechi, continuing their work on aiding repairs and defending from any remaining wave monsters. Ren, like he had agreed, went off with Riza to collect the financial support from the crown earlier in the morning. Naofumi even managed to get him to get some magic tomes for his own party since he was headed in that direction.

Naofumi had already told the rest of his party what had happened and their reactions were expected. Raphtalia scolded Naofumi with some serious heat for threatening the princess of the ruler, Rifana and Elina laughed, and Silver just looked confused as she always did. The day progressed rather plainly until just before sunset, when Ren came in riding Riza (Naofumi chose to ignore the slight moans coming from the dragon girl) with Melty riding with him.

Ren calmly walked up to Naofumi and his group, "Two things. Firstly, I got the beginner's tomes for your party like you asked."

Naofumi gave a grateful smile as Ren passed them out, "Thanks a lot Ren."

Ren nodded, "Secondly," he points towards Melty, "We've been framed for kidnapping the crown princess."

"Oh. Ok."
