MaxPrime: As I said in previous chapters and responses, this will not involve any sort of romance beyond comedic gags since 1) I don't want to write that type of fic and 2) I suck at writing that type of fic. So, no, Raphtalia will not see Naofumi in a romantic sense, nor will anyone else.

drmcgraw186: L'arc and Therese are going to be the source of several conflicts both current and future, especially since Malty is dead (since I'm told she plays a heavy role in a lot of future arcs) so the betrayal will still happen, only now there's going to be a twist to make things very interesting. As for Motoyasu, its less of an orphanage being opened and more of Motoyasu's delirious mind going 'I want the tiny lolis, I get the tiny lolis, I take care of tiny lolis' despite not knowing how to in the slightest.

Linkone1: That JoJo for ya. Someone will die and you will be hit with the feels despite it being about overly buff men fighting each other with otherworldly powers. I'm glad I was able to inject that feeling into my story :)

Eisherz06: I wouldn't know, I've never played any of the games.

R-king 93: I missed that response so much lmao.

Spellflame: Nope, its just a mix of JoJo and Spongebob because funny menacing symbol and funny Spongebob quote.

A Shield's Stand

Chapter 25: Welcome L'arc and Therese! (Part One)

Walking into their loft, the party of four caught the attention of the two other adventurers they would be sharing their room with.

One of them was a man with dark red eyes and hair, standing just a bit taller than Naofumi, sporting a deadly looking scythe on his back. He was wearing a similarly colored crimson vest covering his chest and leaving his arms exposed. On his right arm was a silver and leather arm piece covering the entirety of his arm. He met their gazes with relaxed eyes and a kind smile. The other adventurer was a woman with turquoise colored hair and eyes. She was shorter than her red haired compatriot, but that wasn't too surprising. She was wearing a leather corset and a cloth shirt that left her shoulders bare. They couldn't see any weapon on her body but she was wearing several rings and other accessories adorned with jewelry. Similarly to the man, she met the group with a soft smile, if a bit less open.

"Hey there! You the group we'll be boarding with?" The man asked. He looked between the four of them, taking in their features, his eyes widening in shock as he saw Naofumi's scar, but he suppressed that well enough.

Naofumi nodded, not offering anything more. Raphtalia sighed and responded properly, "Yes, we are. My name is Raphtalia, and this is Rifana, Naofumi, and Silver," she introduced them appropriately.

The woman's brows raised up a bit, "Naofumi? As in the Devilish Shield Hero?"

The man nudged her, "C'mon Therese, you know how much the villages around Melromarc praise him. He's gotta be doing something right?" He turned his attention back to them, "Anyway, kiddo, I'm not sure if you want to use the Shield Hero's name as an alias right now, what with how divided people are about him. Give it about a year and you should be good."

Naofumi glared, "I am the Shield Hero, and don't call me kiddo."

"...ooook then… Oh!" The man perked up, "We haven't introduced ourselves yet! Sorry about that. I'm L'arc Berg and this here is my companion, Therese Alexandrite."

"Nice to meet you!" Therese chirps.

Raphtalia, Rifana, and Silver look between themselves for a moment. "Listen, I don't know what you're trying to say, but I don't think any of us have ever heard a language like that. Sorry." Rifana apologized.

Therese facepalmed before she began fiddling with her jewelry, mumbling quiet curses that only Naofumi and L'arc could understand. Eventually she smiled and turned back to them. "Can you understand me now?" The three nod. "Anyway, it's very nice to meet you all."

Naofumi brushed away that little bit of information, Naofumi spoke up, "It's nice to meet you and all, but I was hoping to take a nap for a little bit," he says gruffly. Silver nudges Naofumi and sends an upset look at her father. He sighs, rubbing a hand down his face, "Sorry, sorry. I don't mean to be rude and I'm not upset with either of you. It's just been… It's just been a rough couple of days."

L'arc nods at that, "If you really are the Shield Hero, then I can believe that, kiddo." He hadn't heard everything, obviously, but he's gotten a solid chunk of information on the siege of Castle Town. It was really the only thing people would talk about right now. Infiltrating the capital probably takes a lot of effort, not that L'arc would know too well.

The group stood in awkward silence, unsure how to continue the conversation.

"...soooo, you still want to take that nap? We can leave if you want us to," L'arc offers.

Naofumi sighs, "No thanks. Honestly I was using that as an excuse to get you guys out of here for a bit. Sorry about that."

"Naofumi!" Raphtalia scolded the man who chuckled a bit in response, though she couldn't hide her smile entirely. It seemed Naofumi was slowly coming back to them.

Rifana looked at the two adventurers. Maybe these two would be good for Naofumi. Lord knows he needed some friends right about now. Why he was so cold towards them and the other heroes was a mystery for now though and it hurt to admit.

L'arc laughed openly while Therese hid her giggles behind her palm, "You won't get rid of us that easily, kiddo."

Rifana stretched her back, letting out a satisfied grunt when she felt a pop in her back, "Well, it was worth a shot." She turned to Naofumi, "Hey 'Fumi, apparently the other heroes are wimps and can't handle a bit of rocking, wanna make fun of them? You guys can come too if you want."

Naofumi shrugged, "Sure, why not."

"Oh! Let me come too, Daddy! I wanna go for a swim!" Silver excitedly trailed after Naofumi, latching onto his leg as he continued walking with a giggling bird girl stuck to him.

Breaching out to the deck, the group of six was met with a pitiful sight; Motoyasu and Itsuki both clutching their stomachs in utter agony as they leaned against the railing of the ship. Ren was faring a lot better, having been used to riding Riza all across the country, but was still hanging near the side of the ship in case his stomach decided to throw a revolution against the rest of his body. Riza stood next to him, chatting with him ceaselessly, only pausing when Ren decided to offer a response every so often.

L'arc looked between the other heroes, sweat-dropping at the two currently groaning men trying to hold in their lunches. "Jeez… I thought you were joking when you said we could make fun of them… this is a little sad."

Rifana snorted, "I know, right? I honestly thought all the fighting and running they've done would make them a little better at handling stress."

While the four adults mingled and talked between each other, Silver blew a raspberry at Riza who growled in return, thus prompting Ren to walk over to prevent a conflict. "Nice to see you all back on deck. Are these the two you're rooming with?" He asked while assessing them coldly.

"Yup! So far they've been pretty cool, so it shouldn't be too much of a drag to deal with them for a day or two," Rifana threw her arm around the stoic Ren.

"Uncle Ren, you can stop trying to be cool now," Silver cut through his persona instantly. Ren dramatically collapsed to the ground at the brutal blow to his image. Just one time… that's all I ask for… he mumbled from the ground.

Riza sighed fondly as she picked up the sad man and threw him over her shoulder. "I don't even know why he tries anymore, we all know he's a big nerd by this point and we love him for it."

"Stop… please…" he begged from his spot, his hands covering his face.

"Nope, this is way too funny to just stop," Rifana jeered.

"Anyway, this is L'arc and Therese, and you're right, we'll be rooming with them for the ride," Raphtalia answered his question, before their regular on brand zany actions began.

L'arc threw his head back, bursting with laughter, "Jeez, you guys are way too much! Seriously, where did you find people this funny, kiddo?"

"Well… I guess they found me, really," he smiled despite himself, "I just welcomed them with open arms."

"Welcome to Cal Mira!" The tour guide shouted with enthusiasm, his arms thrown wide displaying the island behind him. Everyone waited for him to start again as he just stood still in the same pose. "...where are the other two heroes?" He asked tentatively. As he said that, two stretchers were carried past them, Itsuki and Motoyasu carried atop them, groaning in pain. "Alright then. Let us continue."

The guide showed them to the main plaza before delving into the features of the town including an on site armory and most other shops one would expect in a regular city. He then went on to explain the rules behind the archipelago. Mainly, no kill stealing and spreading out between islands to maximize productivity and minimize disputes between parties. If he was unnerved by the deadpanned and attentive gazes that met him, he didn't show it. Naofumi had to give credit where credit was due, the man knew what he was doing.

Eventually, he left, leaving the eight to idle amongst themselves in the center of town.

"Daddy, come look at this! There's a cool spell here for you!" Silver's voice caught their attention. The eight looked towards the totem pole the girl stood next to.

"What'd you find, brat?" Riza spat out before Ren chopped her on the top of her head. She just pouted in response.

Ignoring her, Naofumi asked, "What did you find, Silver?" Walking beside her he saw an epigraph written into stone at the base of the totem. Scratching his chin as he read over the magical writing.

Raphtalia raised the paper pamphlet the tour guide had given them, "Apparently, this totem was left by the original inhabitants who settled this island. And there should be an epigraph left behind by a previous cardinal hero."

"As source of thy power, the Shield Hero orders thee, decipher the meaning of this message and energize the target of my choice, Zweit Aura," Naofumi called out as he focused his mana towards Raphtalia.

A glow encompassed the tanuki demi-human as she gasped in surprise, a feeling of incredible power and strength washing over her. She stared at her palms as she gripped her hands in wonder. "Rifana, is this what you feel when you use Transference?" She asked with wide eyes. L'arc and Therese share a confused glance between them, storing that tidbit away for later.

L'arc clapped his hand onto Naofumi's shoulder, "Well you really weren't kidding, kiddo. If that spell isn't messing with us, then you really are the Shield Hero." He said with a tense smile, "Though I guess the scar should have been a bit of an indicator." Naofumi side-eyed the crimson haired man with annoyance but didn't stop him, "Anyway, that really doesn't change what we wanted to ask. We wanted to know if you wanted to party up with us, team up while we're here, y'know?"

Ren went to speak and hopefully diffuse the situation, but Naofumi beat him to it, "Why?"

L'arc looked a bit taken aback so Therese answered for him, "Well, we believe it would be far more efficient for a larger party to tackle these monsters. There's only so much two people can do, after all."

"And why not go with us?" Ren asked, a little peeved at being second choice. He understood why, Naofumi was literally one of the most impressive heroes this world had seen in his first few months here, but he didn't have to like it. That stat boosting support spell wouldn't help his own odds either but he could live with it.

Therese seemed to fumble for a response when L'arc popped back in, "Because I wanted to see if the so-called Devilish Shield Hero was as skilled as they say. You laid siege to a castle with the country's people charging behind you, that's pretty damn impressive, you know," he said quickly and with a small unseen sweat trailing down the back of his neck.

"I was there too, y'know," Ren grumbled.

Taking a moment to share glances between each other, the members of the Shield Hero's family nodded, Rifana being the one to respond, "None of us see any problem with it, so you guys can tag along. You seem fun anyway," she said with a blase shrug.

Silver cheered, "Woo! More friends!" She crushed the Shield plush in her arms. Naofumi chuckled as he ruffled the girl's hair.

"We'll meet you by the ferry in twenty minutes. Is that enough time for you two to get ready?" Naofumi asked.

Therese hummed, a finger to her chin, "It should be. We will see you then." She bowed before dragging L'arc off by the forearm.

"There's something off about them, and I'm not talking about the bad reason for sticking with you instead of me," Ren expressed his concern, "You sure this is a good idea Naofumi? Can we really trust them?"

Naofumi huffed, "It won't be any different from trusting any of you." He stalked off to begin preparations, leaving behind a hurt Ren.

As promised, the group of now six met up at the ferry, riding along to the second island where they fought all manner of exciting beasts! From purple slimes to demonic wolves and cave monsters! The thrill of it all was enough to… do nothing for any of them, really. All of these monsters were pitifully weak compared to them. They all practically exploded from a single hit from any of the party, bar Naofumi. The exp they got from them wasn't anything to scoff at though. A single weak slime got the entire party five hundred points, something that would take at least three hundred slimes normally. Honestly, this boost field was ridiculous. Unanimously, the group decided to move to more challenging targets, seeing as they were all excruciatingly bored and the items the monsters dropped weren't all that impressive.

Traveling to the next island provided them with a bit more of a challenge, but it was still a cakewalk when the party employed basic tactics into the fights. Naofumi would usually charge in, drawing attention and avoiding all damage with his absurd defense and a little bit of help from Wireframe, then the rest of the crew would clean up the monsters while they were distracted. Still boring but still effective. Very effective. The monster materials were also a bit better, but it wasn't anything too crazy.

After the thirtieth sweep, Rifana groaned from atop her pile of dead monsters, "Ugggghhhh, this is boring 'Fumi."

Raphtalia huffed, "Rifana, get down from there and help us clean up this mess."

"Uuuuuuuugggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh," was her eloquent reply.

A tick mark formed on her forehead as Raphtalia teleported over to the pile faster than the eye could see and kicked it over, Rifana falling from her perch. While the rest of the party were distracted, Therese tread over to L'arc, whispering quietly to the man, "Have you seen anything yet?"

L'arc shook his head, "Nothin', whatever the kiddo's got, it isn't anything we can fight against. Glass was right. These guys have stuff we can't handle yet."

"There has to be something we can do!" Therese whisper shouted, "We can't just give up!"

"What are you guys talking about?" Silver asked from literally right behind them.

"WAH!" The two screamed in surprise, L'arc tripping over a small stone and falling to a heap.

Therese took a deep breath, "We would appreciate it if you wouldn't scare us like that, Silver," she asked kindly of the small girl, "And we were just discussing whether there would be more challenging monsters on the other islands. These monsters are fairly simple and don't pose much of a challenge."

Silver nodded sagely, "I completely understand, these guys are so weak they can't even handle one of my punches!" L'arc and Therese cringed, exchanging a look.

They thought the same thing, 'That's not the monsters' faults, I don't think anything can survive a punch from you.'

L'arc coughed into his hand, drawing attention, "Why don't you head over to your Dad and see what he's up to? We're just finishing up over here."

Silver smiled cheerily, "Ok!" Before she left completely, the small silver haired girl turned, one eye peeking at the two behind her, staring through the souls of the two. "Oh, one more thing. Don't think you're fooling us." The two otherworld invaders struggled to stay standing as Silver reverted back to her cheerful demeanor. "Daddy!" She cheered as she charged the man in question.

L'arc cursed under his breath, "Shit."

Eventually the group called it a day and returned to the main island, with L'arc convincing the group to relax a bit in the local pub. The original party of four left first, L'arc and Theresa heading out only a few minutes later with the excuse of selling some materials.

"L'arc, this is getting much too risky," Theresa pleaded, "We're no closer to learning the source of the Shield Hero's strength and they've suspected us from the start. This isn't worth the risk."

L'arc sternly met her, "Even if they suspect us, I doubt they'll realize we're from another world."

"Even still, we're putting everything at risk, L'arc!" She scolded, "We should fall back for now and catch them by surprise during the wave."

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"...I'm not sure," he uttered, "But I'm going to find out why."

Therese knew that tone. That was the 'nothing will change my mind' tone. She sighed as she dragged her hands down her face, grumbling about stupid redheads.

Opening the door to the bar, they were met with raucous partying, loud cheers, and more than a few drunk adventurers loitering the bar and tables. Scanning the room quickly revealed Naofumi and the rest of the gang sitting together at a table off to the side, talking quietly between each other and enjoying some drinks of their own (Silver got a juice box :) ). Ren and Riza were off by themselves, a drunk Riza completely draped over the boy. The red haired dragon woman went in for a sloppy kiss but was met with the palm of Ren's hand, the boy tired of her shenanigans.

Approaching the table, Naofumi and company looked up from their conversation to greet them, their previous hostilities not showing.

"What? Thought you could party without us, kiddo?" L'arc teased as he pulled up two chairs for him and Therese.

Raphtalia sighed, "Rifana wanted to start drinking as soon as we got here."

"Yeah? And?" Rifana shot back with a light blush on her cheeks. The lightweight in her was rearing up already. "What's wrong with a little pregame?"

"Only the fact that you don't have one," Naofumi said with a small smirk. His words pierced Rifana, the girl going monochrome as she fell to the table. Raphtalia spurted, hiding her face in her mug, trying to hide her laughter.

Rifana'a face blew up in a giant embarrassed blush. "S-so what! At least I can feel the alcohol!"

Naofumi threw his head back, feigning pain, "Low blow, Rifana. How will I ever recover from such a wound?" Silver giggled, a little bit of juice dribbling down her chin. Raphtalia clapped her hand on Rifana's back, comforting the weasel girl after her embarrassing defeat.

Though L'arc did find one point rather interesting, "Wait, you can't feel the alcohol? Does that mean you can't get drunk?" He questioned. Therese deadpanned at him. Of course the buffoon would think of that over any other logical response.

"Yup," Naofumi shrugs, "Probably because of the Shield considering being drunk as some sort of negative status."

L'arc was stunned in awe, eyes sparkling. This man was clearly a god. "So you could outdrink anyone in the world?" He asks excitedly.

"Unless someone also has his ridiculous alcohol tolerance, then no, they can't," Raphtalia answered the question.

L'arc considered the implications of this revelation. Looking at Naofumi, anyone would see a sort of tall and skinny guy, with an above average build and a gnarly looking scar. He seriously doubts anyone would be capable of telling he was the heaviest of heavyweight drinkers possible. That's easy betting money right there.

"Alright, be honest with me," L'arc starts, raising his hands in a show of non-aggression, "How many people have you beat in drinking contests?" L'arc gave a self assured close eyed smirk, "You're quite the hustler aren't you, kiddo?"

The Shield Hero party shared quick glances, "Uhhhh, I haven't made any drinking bets… ever."

L'arc blinked in surprise. Even Therese was a little taken aback. "...really?" They nod.

"The only person who really got into any sort of contest at all was… Elena," Raphtalia trailed off.

In an instant, the mood of the table went from happy, joking, and lighthearted to suffocating. Rifana buried her face in her mug, Silver joining her in drowning her sorrows, taking quiet sips from her juice box. Naofumi's light smirk vanished, a deep set scowl taking its place. Raphtalia laid her hand on his back but Naofumi shrugged it off. She wanted to say something but chose not to. The sounds of the bar transitioned from background noise to deafening.

'Oh…' L'arc hissed through his teeth, his face shriveling up with regret, 'Oh no.' He discreetly whirled towards Therese, the two sharing a mental conversation. 'Therese! What the hell do we do now?!'

'Why are you asking me?!' She thought shouted back at him, 'You're the one who wanted to get information on the heroes!'

'I didn't know one of them was grieving!' He shot back.

'Does that really matter?! We still have to learn the secret of his power!' She sighed. 'Listen, we knew this would be hard when we volunteered to destroy another world for the sake of our own. We cannot give up just because we feel sympathy for a grieving man. Do you understand?'

'...'

'Do you understand, L'arc?'

'...yes.'

L'arc cleared his throat, "I don't mean to come across as… insensitive but… did you guys lose someone?"

Raphtalia teared up, "Yes." She brushed it away, "Yes we did. In the siege of Castle Town."

"Oh…" Therese spoke softly, "I'm so sorry, we didn't kno-" She felt L'arc's hand land on her shoulder, looking up to see his determined face.

"I won't say I completely understand, since I've never lost someone in a battle, but I know what it feels like to grieve over someone," he states quietly.

Raphtalia stands up from her seat, taking hold of Silver and Rifana's wrists and dragging them towards the bar, "Therese, we're going to get some refills, would you care to come with us?"

Picking up on the obvious demand, Therese followed the girls.

The two men sat there silently, nursing their mugs and idly taking sips whenever the need made itself present. The chatter and cheering of the bar filled their silence for them. Naofumi's scowl returned in full force, but he made no remarks while L'arc put his mug down and stared deep into it, as if it would grant him the answer to life. He sighed, "I lost my father not even a year ago. It wasn't from anything dangerous, thankfully, it was a peaceful passing of old age, but that doesn't make it hurt any less. The day it happened I just… went out to the nearest bar and drowned myself in as much beer as I could buy. Therese got me out after a couple hours. That was basically all I got to do. I had no time to grieve. My family needed me, people needed me, so I got my shit together and kept on going. Being the Shield Hero, I don't imagine you have a lot of time either, and for that, I'm sorry. I really am. People need time to grieve, and you're being robbed of yours, just like I was." He slams down the rest of his drink and begins playing with the empty mug, balancing it on its edge with his finger, "It never really stops hurting. You just kind of get used to the pain after a while." He looks up, "How'd it happen?"

The metal rim of the mug is crushed under Naofumi's grip, "Bastard Pope put a spear in her and blew a hole through her chest. I beat him until no one could recognize him as human."

L'arc gave a grim smile, "I heard about him. That pope guy was really a bastard, you did good killing him. I think Elina would love to know you ground him up. I know I would."

Against everything, Naofumi smiled, if only a bit, "Yeah. I think she would." He huffs, "Everyone has been telling me how 'sorry' they are about her death and how she would be happy that everyone else got to live, but how the hell am I supposed to feel about that? Am I supposed to think she was happy to have died? Elina wasn't like that. She wouldn't just leave me like that…" Naofumi mutters, trying to reassure himself.

L'arc doesn't enjoy seeing someone berate themselves, so he cuts that out right quick. "She wouldn't. It was against her will, and it was all she could do. The others won't leave you. I've seen how they look at you. You're the center of their worlds. Raphtalia, Rifana, and Silver. So have a little more faith in them, alright?"

Naofumi looks hopeful, "They won't?"

It hurt to see him plead, to beg that his closest family wouldn't abandon him, "They won't."

Naofumi broke. Tears began to fall from his eyes, slowly at first but soon they fell readily and heartbroken sobs escaped him every few seconds. L'arc pulled his chair beside him and laid a single hand on his back, a simple comfort, but one that was appreciated immensely.

Meanwhile, at the bar counter, Rifana and Therese stood silently together, neither really sure what to say. They were left alone by themselves while Raphtalia and Silver got some drinks and continuously stole glances backwards to check up on the two, leaving them by themselves.

Therese shuffled back and forth awkwardly, the tension was killing her. "So uhhhh…"

Rifana growled, cutting her off, "Listen, I don't have anything against you, but it's really obvious you two have some kind of goal by being in our party, and you have something against 'Fumi." She jabbed the pole end of her axe into the blue haired girl's chest, "He's already hurting really badly, I don't want anyone else to hurt him. Especially not right now. So if you or that red haired idiot you call a partner upset Naofumi in any way…" I've Been A Fool awoke, a third eye opening on Rifana's forehead, "Then me and my stand are going to give a little more than just a warning, just like that moron of a Spear Hero."

Therese nodded frantically, sputtering at the sudden and rather freakish appearance of a third eye on the girl's forehead.

Glass wasn't joking when she told her about the girl's strange ability. She had told her that the third eye was the source of this power and as soon as it appeared, her enemies had her abilities, which should be impossible. But the rest of their situation was so bizarre that honestly this was fairly tame in comparison.

Therese gulped, "Your uh… stand?" Play dumb. That would work.

Rifana sighed wearily, shaking her head, "Yeah, I'm not telling you. I may not be the smartest person in the world, but I can tell when people are playing dumb, so piss off with all that bullshit." She stormed off towards the bar, greeting the other two members with a grumble before swiping and downing her drink in seconds, leaving Therese with more than she started with, but not enough.

A stand? Therese mulled to herself.

It certainly was an interesting name, to say the least, but in a bizarre sort of way it fit perfectly. In that rush of threats and imminent death, there was one more piece of information that she could use. Rifana had apparently used her ability on the Spear Hero, and based off of everyone's opinions of him, inside Naofumi's party and out, he's a complete idiot with an undying trust towards women despite everything a lot of women have done to manipulate him. Lucky for her, she's a woman who wants to manipulate him.

A quick search of the bar gave her all the hope she needed, standing next to the counter, drunk off his ass was the very same Spear Hero failing to pick up a girl because of his horrible reputation.

Therese smirked, This could work.

Notes:

Happy 4th of July! Freedom and all that good stuff! Goddamn I love this country.

Anyway! Here's a new chapter to celebrate the holiday (not that the tone fits the holiday, but whatever!) L'arc and Therese are basically just doing reconnaissance to see what they can learn about Naofumi. An ability that not everyone can see and none of them can damage? That's a very dangerous combo that could very easily sweep them all, bar Glass. They haven't learned everything, but they might have learned enough.

For the grieving and mopey Naofumi, this should be the last chapter where he's incredibly OOC and angry. He'll still be depressed and he's far from being done healing but he should open up to his family more following this chapter. And I'm sorry this one hasn't had much action, but next chapter will be chock-full of it, I can promise you that. Depending on how I go about writing it, the next chapter might be the final one before season 2 of the anime, so it might be the end to normal chapters for a while (not that you aren't used to that, sorry!) But I still have a bunch of stand fight specials I'm planning for reaching 400 favs and 50K views and counting (thank you for that btw :) )

Anyway, that's all I have to say for now, so I'll see you guys next week (and yes, I mean next week, not two or three weeks from now). Leave a review to let me know how I did, and if there are any specific battles you want for stand fights against Naofumi and Wireframe.

Have a happy 4th!
