When Sue confronted Carrie about who she was talking to in their booth she noticed her acting strange, she sunk into the corner and craned her head; the brown-haired girl had seemingly disappeared, but Sue caught a glimpse of her walking outside the big window, somehow just missing her by a few short seconds.
"Carrie?" Sue hadn't seen her like this in some time, it was like she was afraid to actually talk to her. She'd told her before she could tell her anything, she didn't want her to feel like she was in any trouble, she wanted her to trust her.
"She was a girl doing a research paper. She was just asking me questions about Chamberlain," Sue never heard Carrie lie before, she always was quiet and hesitant when she spoke, but she always told the truth, always, "She's from Haddonfield."
"Oh, well Ok," not too strange, it wasn't like anyone from Haddonfield would be killed if they came over here. Carrie still looked uneasy, "She didn't do anything to you did she?"
Carrie shook her head, Sue was relieved, she went to the counter to order strawberry milkshakes for both of them, she knew she was gone for a while because of Chris so it was the least she could do. She came back with only one shake glass and two straws.
"They said they didn't have enough mix for two glasses. Did you want to share?" Sue smiled holding out two straws wrapped in paper, "I can always go back and get something else."
Carrie smiled, "That's ok. I can never finish a whole one."
Sue liked this, she liked it when it was just the two of them, they shared their shake, two straws, laughing and goofing around with each other; for some reason getting stares from older people as if they had never seen girls drink a milkshake before. Sue didn't understand people in this town anymore, all the more reason to move to a college upstate, she'd already been looking for apartments for her and Carrie.
The next day in the afternoon Carrie was nervous, she knew someone would catch her, she stood outside the back of the library feeling she was being watched, checking the phone Sue gifted her for the birthday she looked for any new messages. A burgundy station wagon pulled up, "Hurry," Allyson told her, pushing her door open. Carrie hopped in, she kept thinking Sue or Mrs Snell spotted her, but this wasn't her common knowledge of them this was only her mind making her paranoid.
"Sorry, I know this isn't exactly a stealth vehicle. My mother let me borrow it. She knew I was going to visit Grandmother."
Carrie was quiet, it didn't mean she didn't have questions, "Does she know about the boogeyman?"
Allyson frowned, "Yes. Last Halloween. He terrorized us all. When he comes back this year, we'll be ready for him," she said this with a sly grin, Carrie liked her confidence, she wished she could have it; she also found her funny, she treated her differently than Sue, she seemed free spirited.
"Grandmother can't wait to meet you. She's a little rough around the edges when you first meet her, but I know she'll warm up to you. I'll introduce you."
The Grandmother, Laurie Strode lived outside of Haddonfield, the dirt road leading up the private road wasn't very promising to Carrie, it felt like this was some kind of trap. There was this long chain link fence with barbed wire at the top like there a prison on the other side of it. Allyson stopped the car at the main gate, she put her window down and pressed a button on an old, rusted intercom.
"Who is it?" The voice almost reminded Carrie of Margaret only it was raspier, maybe a smoker.
"It's me, Grandmother."
The voice softened a bit, "Ally? Alright. Come on in. Be careful of the bumps."
Allyson was buzzed in, the gate crawled open, it was long overdue for some maintenance. Carrie held Allyson's hand the whole way walking up to the front of the home; faded siding, missing shingles, broken porch, this had to be a haunted house, Carrie had questions about all of the mannequins set up around the side of the house but was too on edge to ask.
They met Allyson's Grandmother at the screen door, her face was withered and old, but she had some bark, those serious eyes, she had been through a lot that was sure. She was confused seeing Carrie, after Allyson told her she found someone that could be their secret weapon she wasn't expecting this. Allyson only told her she was a girl about her age, and she could kick Michael's butt.
The three of them sat down in the living room and drank tea, they were all very quiet, Carrie blew in her cup when she felt how scalding it was, she looked up at the old woman when she felt her eyes on her.
"Careful it's hot," she said bluntly.
Allyson knew from the look on her face she was skeptical in what Allyson saw in her that she didn't.
"Carrie, my grandmother has fought with Michael before, but he has some trouble...," she wasn't sure how to put this, "Staying dead."
Carrie sipped a small taste of tea in her mouth, she could taste some kind of rosemary blend.
"Does she know who he is?"
"A bad man?" Carrie hesitated.
"I told her his history," Allyson said, biting her lip.
"Ok. So how about you, Carrie? I'd like to know about you."
Carrie wasn't sure what to say, she was regretting agreeing to come here.
Allyson's grandmother knew she was stalling, "Ally, can you help me in the kitchen for a moment?" Her smile told Allyson she had a few words for her, one maybe being 'mistake', 'What were you thinking?'
By the fridge they spoke one on one.
"Listen, I'm not mad."
"You have to listen to me!" Allyson said in a harsh whisper.
"Ally. What aren't you telling me?"
"If I told you over the phone, you'd think I was crazy," she folded her arms, she knew she was taking a huge gamble on this, but she knew once she saw what Carrie it could do would all make sense, she was standing her ground.
"Ok...what can she do? Let's see it."
"She...she doesn't like to show it off," Allyson wasn't sure how much she could skirt around it.
The seasoned woman noticed Carrie get out of her chair and walk around the room, she looked at the mantle displaying old photos of a young woman much like her.
"And that would be what exactly?"
"Her gift," Allyson noticed Carrie examining the frames, "Carrie. Can you come over here?"
Carrie stepped toward them all hunched over, she knew she was disappointing them, she didn't want to embarrass her new friend, Carrie looked down at the floor; Laurie didn't need this today, she was ready to go outside and do some shooting with her .22. Allyson didn't want to snap at Carrie, she wanted to see if something was troubling her, for all she knew she brought the poor girl to tears.
"Carrie?" She touched her hand, it was this instance she realized that she went quiet not because she was shy but because she was powering up, her hair stood on end like she had an electric charge. Allyson could feel a vibration in the blonde's hand she quickly let go of, she caught up with her grandmother and made her sit back down. Carrie lifted up off the floor and floated over to them. Laurie watched this small girl create this force that allowed her to do almost anything before her own eyes. Books floated off shelves, the coffee table shook, the floor vibrated.
Not quite dark yet. Carrie walked through the front door to the Snell family home where she found Sue, Sue's mother Claire and a police officer sitting at the kitchen table. Carrie didn't have much time to react, Sue ran over and embraced her.
"Where have you been? You had us worried!"
Carrie wanted to answer, she saw the bored look on the officer's face, tired, unamused, could be doing something more useful and get some rookie to look after this. Claire was relieved but maybe because now her daughter could settle down after knowing her friend was ok, Carrie imagined her going into hysterics with her mother and the cop. Carrie knew she messed up having her phone off, they would think she was kidnapped or dead somewhere. After practicing her speech with Allyson and her grandmother she explained that her phone had died, and she went to charge it at the diner but there were some college kids hanging around and they hassled her, of course this only led to Sue's worries escalating. But Carrie told her she went to find a place to hide, just like she always told her to do, she knew she would worry but she planned on going straight home after.
Carrie thought that would be the end of it, but the officer stuck around and told Carrie that her mother had been also spotted around town, she wasn't staying at her old residence anymore, they were tracking her to keep an eye on her. No doubt they were worried that she might try to harm her. Sue volunteered to keep a closer eye on Carrie from now on, she always needed someone with her.
"I'm sorry," Carrie repeated for the hundredth time.
Sue was getting her bed ready, Carrie was hanging out in her room until it was lights out; Sue's mother was kind of strict on the rules during a school week in her home, no matter what your age.
"I know I know. I just worry about you. I always will," Sue said fluffing her pillow.
It was a lot harder to keep a secret than Carrie thought, she didn't want to hurt Sue, but that family asked for her help, it only seemed right to keep her in the dark at least for a little while. After it was all over Sue would forgive her and things would be normal again, maybe Sue and Allyson would become great friends just like she was with them, they could even be like a family.
Carrie made sure to take notice of the new pjs Sue was wearing, the bottoms had pink hearts and the top was a very loose cotton top that showed cleavage, Sue's dirty pillows were about ready to pop out, that's what Carrie wanted to say.
"You like them, huh?" Carrie smiled and nodded, "Maybe next time we're at the mall we'll buy you some."
Carrie yawned, "Thanks, Sue."
"Say, why don't you sleep in my bed tonight?" She seemed chipper, Carrie didn't think much of it, maybe she was just trying to cheer herself up.
Carrie hadn't slept in Sue's room for almost a year and had never slept in the same bed, so it seemed a tad odd to her but then again everything felt odd to her because she never lived a normal life.
"Are you sure?"
Sue smiled, she placed her hands on top of Carrie's shoulders, "Yeah. You had a big scare today. I wish I was there to tell those creeps to back off."
"I could have handled them," Carrie said confidentially, not joking.
Sue smiled wide, "I know you could have," she hugged her and led her to bed, Carrie hopped in first, Sue wrapped the covers around the two of them, she made sure to stay extra close to Carrie; Carrie didn't mind it, she found it nice having someone there. Sue heard Carrie make a noise, "I bet this is way better. I don't know how you can sleep on the bed in your room, that mattress is so stiff...your cold wow."
Carrie felt Sue's arms hug around her waist, it was comforting, she was starting to wish this happened every night. Carrie found herself pressed against Sue's body, she felt protected, safe, all feelings about her escaped mother melted away in the comfort of the one person in the world that took a chance on her.
"Goodnight, Carrie," Sue said, she sleepily planted a kiss on Carrie's cheek; Carrie liked that feeling too.
