Erialynn got to come home with Emery five days after she was born. They sent her home with a monitor and many instructions for her care. She woke up every two hours at night and Emery was exhausted by the end of the first week. Cody stayed at the house but Jay made him sleep on the couch, and he still had to go to school and work so Emery didn't wake him for help. Erialynn went to work with Emery everyday. School was the furthest thing from the new mother's mind. So she was very grateful she received a leave of absence. The bassinet was right next to Emery's bed. It was a Saturday morning when Emery woke up and rolled over to find the baby not in her bassinet. She ran downstairs and looked around the entire house. Pretty soon her mom came in the door carrying her in her car seat.
"Mom, why didn't you wake me up?"
"You needed your sleep. We just went for coffee and donuts."
"I'd rather be exhausted than have a heart attack." She said unbuckling Erialynn.
"I'm going to take care of her tonight for you. You need to get out with Cody and then sleep for the night."
"There's one problem: Cody is working a double tonight so he's gone."
"Well call Burgess I'm sure she'd love to go do something with you."
"Can I just sleep please? I really am exhausted."
"Fine by me. It's a glamma and baby girl day."
"Glamma huh?"
"Yes I'm far too young to be a grandma."
"That's also because you had me at like twelve."
"I was thirteen thank you very much."
"Still." She says with a giggle.
"Go to bed. We got everything taken care of."
Erin put the tiny baby in the baby sling and started doing chores around the house. Erialynn slept the whole time her grandmother had her. Emery got up shortly after Cody got home from school. He had about an hour before he had to be into work for his second and third shift.
Cody gets dressed for work and then the two of you can go get a quick bite before you go in. I'll have your dad pick you up. He wants to spend some time with you anyways.
The young couple left although Emery looked like a mess she knew she needed time away from the two week old.
"Babe what's wrong?"
This is going to sound crazy but I miss her. Mom took her this morning and I didn't know where she went. I panicked. It just reminds me that we haven't officially adopted her and I am the only one who has guardianship of her. Tessa can come and take her back at any time. What if that's what she does?"
"Babe she didn't want her, she isn't going to come back for her I promise."
"Let's just go get food and spend what time we do have together." She says kissing him.
Cody and Emery stop at Moe's diner which is about three blocks from his work. They eat a quick meal and talk about their life's but mostly about Erialynn. Cody never thought he'd be a dad let alone to a baby that wasn't actually his, but he loved Emery and their perfect family. She felt the same way and being young and a parent to someone you didn't give birth to can be very difficult, but Emery and the baby girl connected from the first time they met.
"Babe, I have to go. Are you ok to wait for your dad by yourself?"
"Yes I'm fine, go. I love you." She says kissing him.
"I love you too."
Neither one of them had realized that was the first time they had told each other they loved each other until after Cody had left.
Jay was there about ten minutes after to get Emery.
"Hey sweetie."
"Hi dad."
"How was your day?"
"Long, I'm so tired. Erialynn just doesn't sleep at night. She's lucky she's cute."
"Not papa's little angel."
"Yes papa's angel. Mom's keeping her all night you'll see. At two in the morning when she's squawking like a little bird and then does that every hour on the hour you'll be changing your tune. So what are you taking me to do."
"Taking you to the gun range. Again don't tell your mother."
"Dad, I don't feel like shooting guns."
"Oh you will."
They get to the gun range and Jay pins pictures to some of the targets.
Now I'm going to teach you how to get a perfect shot just like me.
"By taping pictures of my baby to the target.
She's one of the most important people to you so every time you go to shoot someone do it because you're protecting her. You're staying alive for her."
Emery shoots at the target and just grazes it. She's shaky and nervous for the first time ever when she's been shooting.
"Emery, focus. Protect her. Shoot him between the eyes or he's going to take her from you. Come on."
Every bullet that left her gun after that hit the target where her dad had told her to. She didn't blink, she hardly even took a breath. She emptied her clip and then broke down in her dad's arms and just cried. They sat on the floor in that position for a while and Emery just let out all her emotions that she had been holding back for so long.
"How could she leave her dad? I know how she was conceived wasn't a good thing. Erialynn is a beautiful and amazing thing that came from something terrible. She should be raising her, not me. Someone has to be her mom and I am now that person. I wouldn't change it for the world but how do I explain this to her when she's older."
"When that day comes you'll know what to say. You are every bit of her mother, just like I am every bit your dad. Love is what makes a family. DNA doesn't not make her yours. Just like you and me. It will be ok baby. I love you. Let's head home."
They went home and Emery immediately went to see the baby. She went into her room to see the tiny baby asleep in her bassinet. The young mom just watched her daughter sleep. She finally realized why she would wake up to her mother just staring at her sometimes. Something this precious and fragile that you were responsible for made life come into perspective. Jay walked into the kitchen where Erin was watching her daughter on the baby monitor.
"Hey babe." Hey says kissing her.
"Hey, what did you two do?"
"We just went out and talked. Had some heart to heart conversations."
" You took her to the gun range again didn't you?"
"Nope not at all." he says with a smirk.
Emery came down stairs with the tiny baby in her arms and sat on the couch. Jay came in and sat down next to them and Erin did the same. They sat and watched 50 first dates together. Erialynn surprisingly stayed awake for a majority of the movie which Emery was thankful for because that meant she'd sleep that night. Emery talked to her parents about everything that was on her mind including work and school.
"I want to go back to school when she's 1 1/2 - 2 months old. I'm going to need a bunch of help and I know it's going to be hard but it needs to be done for her. Grandpa doesn't mind if I bring her to work so work is covered but from seven in the morning to 3 in the afternoon I need a sitter."
"Do you remember Doctor Manning? She works the same shift as your uncle at the hospital. I'm sure your uncle Will or Dr. Manning would love to keep her for you."
"I didn't even think about Uncle Will and Natalie. I'll call them tomorrow. It's too late to call tonight."
"Why don't you head to bed sweetie? Your dad and I have Erialynn for you tonight. Just go grab us her bassinet and then go get some sleep."
"Wait who volunteered us for baby duty? Jay says and is quickly smacked in the back by Erin.
"Mom, her pack and play has the bassinet just put her in it tonight. She sleeps pretty well in it. Thank you guys again! I love you to wake me up if you need me."
Emery went upstairs and was asleep before ten o'clock. Little did Erin and Jay know that little miss had an interesting night planned for them. Erialynn woke up every hour on the hour starting at eleven and then when 6 rolled around she wanted to be walked and swayed. They were both very exhausted grandparents. They left around 7:30 for work. Erin walked the baby upstairs and put her in the bassinet next to Emery. They were both fast asleep. Erin found her daughter's phone and set an alarm for 9. Since she didn't have to be in the office until ten that morning. She kissed her daughter and granddaughter and then left. Jay and Erin's day seemed to drag on but they were happy Emery finally got the rest she needed.
