The next week flew by and everyday it was the same routine. The Zoo had become Erialynn's favorite place and Emery enjoyed getting to watch her daughter's amazement while she watched the animals. Another body washed up 3 days after they started the stake out. She was the youngest victim so far. She had just turned 20 the day before they found her 3 month old alone in the park. Her name was Hope West.
"Do you think he'll show up today?" Emery mumbles while loading the baby into the stroller.
"I hope so." Erin says.
Emery pushes the baby into the park and stops at the merry go round so Erialynn could watch for a minute before heading further into the zoo. Erin followed close behind and Jay had went in ahead of her with Upton. The park was unusually quiet that day and everyone was praying they'd get him.
"Anyone see anything?" Emery asks as she tucks the baby's blanket around her.
"Negative." Voight says followed by everyone else saying the same.
"Copy" she mumbles.
They walked around for a good 45 minutes and then sat down on a bench to have a snack. The baby was getting sleepy and was just about out. Emery pushed the stroller back and fourth until she finally fell asleep. She got up to put the bag in the back of the stroller. Before she even had time to think a man came up behind her.
"Scream and I'll kill your baby and then you."
As much as Emery prepared for this moment and knew there were people watching. The fear she felt in that moment was unlike anything else.
"Walk, the baby stays right here."
"Please don't hurt my baby. What do you want?" Emery says panicked.
As soon as Emery is out of sight Erin runs to the baby. Jay and Upton have eyes on Emery the entire time but they wanted him to get her back to his vehicle before tackling him.
The man doesn't say a single word. Emery can feel the gun in her side.
"He is taking her to the north gate." Jay whispers.
"Atwater you in position."
"Copy."
They come out the gate with Jay close behind and Atwater watching closely. They get to the car and he injects her with a syringe she drops with in seconds and the team instantly rushes the man.
"Emery stay awake." She hears Upton say.
"What did you give her?" Jay yells slamming him up against the car.
All the man does is smile and Jay hands him off to Ruzek.
"Call a bus" Upton yells.
Erin rushes to her daughters side and pushes Upton out of the way. Even though it wasn't intentional, Hailey took it very personal.
"What he give her?" Erin asks Jay.
"No idea. We got the syringe though. Let's get her to the hospital." Jay says as the ambulance pulls up.
They take Emery to the hospital and she is only out about an hour before she wakes up in a hospital bed. She stirs slightly panicked but Erin and Jay were right there to reassure her.
"Everything's fine, we got him." Jay says.
"Erialynn's perfect and she's with her dad." Erin adds.
"What happened?" She asks groggy.
"He injected you with propofol. Same anesthetic he gave to his other Vic's. We were all right there so we got to you quickly." Jay tells his daughter.
"Had we not had all those extra people watching. He would have gotten away with you too." Erin says rubbing her daughters cheek.
"Is he talking yet?" She asks.
Erin and Jay both shake their heads no. Emery figured it wasn't going to be easy to get him to say anything especially since he was chosen to take over. She also knew that her grandfather and Olinsky didn't take kindly to the perps not talking.
"When can I go home?" Emery asks.
"The doctor just wanted to be sure you came out of it ok. They said we can leave as soon as you feel up to it." Erin says.
Emery shakes her head and tries to get out of bed. It takes her a little bit but she is finally able to get going and be discharged. They head back to the precinct and Emery heads directly for the interrogation room. She watches as her grandfather and Al rough the suspect up a bit but he isn't budging. He barely says a word. The half cracked smile sent chills down Emerys spine. It took everything Emery had not to storm into the room and make him fear for his life like he made her fear for hers and her daughters. She knew this wasn't going to be an easy case.
"How old is he?"
"21. He's your age." Erin says.
"Somethings not right mom. I just have a bad feeling on this one. Mazalo started doing this when we would have been 10. He did it for 6 years before being caught. That's really young for him to start this kind of training."
"Your grandpa will figure it out baby. They are out searching his apartment and tearing apart his car. Why don't you go home, I'm sure your dad will take you." Erin says hugging her.
Emery nods her head and heads back out to her dad. They load up in the car and head home. Jay takes the rest of the day to stay home with Emery. Cody heads back into work after they get home to take over with the baby. While Erialynn naps Jay and his daughter just sit on the couch catching up.
"I missed you, you know that?" Jay says.
"I missed you so much dad." She says hugging him.
"How was New York?" He asks
"It was good. I learned a lot but it's not home. I think mom felt that too." Emery said.
"How is your mom?"
"I won't be the middle man. I refuse. You two need to talk and I mean really talk dad. Mom left but you could have went after her. Nobody was holding you here." Emery says getting up and heading to the kitchen.
Jay sat there for awhile. He knew he shouldn't be involving his daughter in their issues. Erialynn woke up and Emery went to get her just as her mom was walking through the door. Emery brought the baby back down to the kitchen and put her in the high chair so she could cook dinner.
"What are you making?" Erin asks.
"Spaghetti. Tonight after I put Erialynn to sleep we are having a family meeting." Emery says.
Erin cringes and sneaks into the bedroom to change. She bumps into Jay coming out of their master bath.
"Hey I didn't know you were in here." Erin says shyly.
"Sorry. Just got used to living here alone I guess." He says walking out of the room.
Erin knew she messed up when it came to Jay. He was the one man she knew she'd never get over. She wanted him back but so much had changed and she knew that. She was so scared to trust one of the only men she had ever trusted in her life.
They all ate and Emery got the baby dressed and in her jammies. Around 8 she rocked her to sleep and then headed downstairs. Cody wouldn't get home until close to midnight so she knew she had time to straighten things out with her parents or at least try.
Jay was on the couch and Erin was hiding in the bedroom.
"Out here now. " she says.
Erin got out of bed and shuffled into the living room and sat on the couch next to Jay.
"I will not be put in the middle of whatever this is. I love you both but you need to figure this out. I don't care if you get back together hell I don't even care that dad is seeing someone else. I need you both, Erialynn needs you both. You two were madly in love and you hurt each other. Mom when you left him and dad when you didn't come after us…."
Jay tried to interrupt but is cut off by his daughter.
"I get it your hurt dad. Mom is right there, tell her. Talk to each other. You guys are an amazing team. I need that. I need my parents. Mom you need to tell dad some stuff, one of them being kind of important. It will help you heal and move on."
"What is so important?" Jay asks puzzled.
They all sit in silence for a little while. Emery just waiting for her mom to say something.
"Mom tell him or I will." Emery says.
