Chapter 1: The Quiet Kid Saves My Life

It was just like any normal day. I woke up in my bedroom dreading going to school, like usual. I was a good student, I was in honors classes and I made good grades, but I also had ADHD. A kid with ADHD having to sit in a classroom for 8 hours a day was torture. I dragged myself out of bed and went to the kitchen for breakfast.

Let me tell you about my family.

I was adopted, so I never knew my birth parents. I had shown up on the doorstep of an adoption shelter as a baby, with no trace of my parents anywhere. The only thing they had left me with, was a note saying my name was Allie. I was fortunate enough to be adopted within a couple of months, other kids weren't that lucky.

So back to my family, I have 2 moms named Claire and Sophie Davis. They had met in high school and have been together ever since. My mom Claire is a nurse, and she has long shifts so I don't see her most of the day. My mom Sophie is an assistant for the CEO of this big manufacturing company, so she doesn't work as long of shifts as my other mom.

The last member of my family is my sister Autumn. She was 13, and like me, she was adopted when she was young. Autumn's birth parents had died saving her from a fire that had started in their apartment building. I was always jealous of the fact that she knew who her birth parents were, and that they had wanted her…

I sat down at the table next to mom Claire while mama Sophie put a plate of eggs and bacon in front of me. "Eat up," she said, "It's your first day back after winter break". "Don't remind me" I whined back. Autumn came running into the kitchen furiously shoving books and papers in her backpack. "I forgot I have to get to school early today to start a project!" She said in a panicked state. "Just remember to grab some breakfast on your way out." Said mama Claire, sipping her coffee and reading a magazine. Autumn quickly grabbed a strip of bacon and ran out of the kitchen towards the front door yelling "Love you" on her way out. Mama Sophie sighed and sat down across from us at the table. She looked stressed, I had heard her talking to mama Claire about some issues her boss's company was going through. Her boss had been grouchy lately, taking all his anger about his failing company out on my mom. I looked at my mom, all sad and tired, and I knew I wanted to find her boss and punch him in the face.

"I have to get going, my shift starts soon." Mama Claire said getting up from the table. She kissed mama Sophie on the head and hugged me. "Have a good day back sweetie, I'll see you later." She told me before heading out for the day. I hugged mama Sophie, "It's going to get better mom." I told her. She smiled at me, "I hope your right honey." I was going to be late if I didn't leave, so I grabbed my backpack and started walking to school.

I was in my Sophomore year at Madison High in Brooklyn, and I hated it. It was the most boring, dull school ever, and having ADHD did not make it any better. I didn't have any friends, people just didn't seem to like me very much. Not that it mattered to me, I preferred being on my own anyways. I sat down in my homeroom a couple of minutes before the bell rang. I dreaded this time of day because Melina Bailey was in my homeroom. Melina was one of the most popular girls in my grade, and she was a bully to everyone.

There was a boy in the very back of the classroom, he was small and quiet with shoulder-length brown hair. He always wore an orange cap on his head. I'd never heard him speak before, but I knew his name was Oliver Denver. I had been in school with him for a couple years. He was just minding his own business when Melina went over to his desk and started bugging him. "Hey Oliver!" She evily said. She then walked behind him and pushed him out of his seat. "Oops" She said without remorse. She and her friend started laughing, andI felt bad for Oliver, so I got up and went to give Melina a piece of my mind. "Hey, leave the poor kid alone would ya?" I shouted at Melina over her crazy laughing. "Ugh, who you do you think you are Allie? You can't tell me what to do." She screamed at me angrily. "Melina heres a little reality check," I paused for dramatic effect. "NOBODY LIKES YOU BECAUSE YOUR A BULLY!" I screamed at her. Her face looked shocked,

I felt satisfied.

"Allie" Said an angry voice.

The feeling didn't last.

I turned around slowly to see Oliver shooting daggers at me. "I didn't need you to defend me". He said coldy. "Look-" I started " I don't need you help Allie". He said to me camly. I stared at him confused, why didn't he want my help? The bell rang and I didn't have time to ask him. I suffered through more horrible classes, but it at least was better since Melina left me alone. After lunch, the students were called into the auditorium for an assembly. I had a weird feeling about it, we had never had spontaneous assemblies in the past. After all the students had filed in, our principal Dr. Mason started the assembly. "So students, your probably wondering why we called you all here today, we have some exciting news to share with you". A huge man walked up next to him, and I got a bad feeling.

A feeling I was in danger.

"This is Mr. Richard, and he will be starting today as the school's new assistant principal!" Dr. Mason exclaimed. Everyone started clapping as Mr. Richard came forward, he put up his hands to stop the clapping and started talking. "It brings me great joy to join the community here at Madison high, and I look forward to working with each and every one of you." He said. His eyes suddenly looked my way and focused on me.

I suddenly thought I was going crazy, because it looked like his 2 eyes, were moving, combining into 1. He suddenly grew and grew, until he was a 7 foot monster with 1 eye. "Your dismissed" The creature said with a growl. I looked around at the other students, and they started getting up and leaving. I was shocked that they couldn't see the huge monster in front of them. I followed them and stood in the aisle, I was the only person still in the auditorium. Mr. Richards. I felt petrified as it slowly walked towards the aisle. "Hello Allie Davis." He snarled. I slowly started to back up the aisle towards the exits, "We've been looking for you for a long time." He said. "Who's been looking for me?" I asked shaking. He just laughed evily and kept walking towards me. Just as he was about to attack, a bright light shone directly into his eyes. He yelled and looked away. I looked at the source of the light, and saw Oliver holding a small device projecting a bright light into the monsters eyes.

I noticed 2 things about Oliver, was that he wasn't wearing his cap, and there were 2 small horns poking out of his head.

The other thing, is that there were furry goat legs where his should be.

Before I got over the shock that Oliver was a goat person, he grabbed my arm and started dragging me out of the auditorium. "Oliver, what's going on?" I asked him. "Allie, I know you must have a lot of questions, but before I can answer them we need to make sure your safe." He told me while pulling me down the hallways. I could hear the monster roaring in the distance, starting to follow us. "What was that thing?" I asked. "A cyclopes" Oliver replied.

Ok, at the time I had no clue what was going on, but I somehow believed the goat boy, even though it was crazy.

"Like, those one eyed monsters from Greek myths?" I asked. "You'd do better than to call them myths." He replied.

We had reached the front doors and burst through them just at the cyclopes came stumbling down the hall behind us. Oliver ran to a car and threw open the car doors. I quickly got into the car as Oliver was turning the engine on. Just as we were about the leave, the cyclopes came barreling out of the school.

Oliver lurched the car forward and slammed into the cyclopes. The impact almost caused the airbags to pop out. Oliver put the car in reverse and started speeding away from the school. "Ok now that we lost that thing, you need to answer my questions". I demanded to Oliver. "First off, and I don't mean this to be rude, but what are you?" I asked. "A satyr, I'm half goat and half human." he said. I nodded, as though that made total sense. "Why did that thing attack me? And why can you see it? And why did you defend me?" I asked all at once. "To answer the first question, it's because your a half-blood, to the 2nd questions, I can see through the mist unlike mortals, and to your 3rd question, satyrs are protectors that bring all the half-bloods to camp." He explained.

I stared at him in shock. I didn't even register most of what he had said, yet somehow it clicked in part of my brain. "What's a half-blood?" I asked. "A half-blood is another term for demi-god." he replied. "So that means, the gods, the Greek gods, are real?" I asked. "Real as ever." He said. "So if i'm a demi-god, one of my parents was a god?" I asked him shocked. He looked at me and nodded. I sat back into my seat. One of my birth parents was a god, I couldn't believe it. I had always thought my parents didn't want me, and now I knew why. "Why did you say one of your parents, don't you know if your godly parents is your mom or dad?" he asked. "I never met my birth parents, I'm adopted." I said. Oliver nodded, "Then I guess we'll have to wait until we get to camp to see who your godly parent is." he said. "What camp?" I asked him. Oliver laughed and said "One of the only safe places on earth for demi-gods of course, Camp Half-Blood."
