Emery was now 25 years old and working for SVU under Olivia. It had been 4 years since they left Chicago and Emery still longed to go home. Erin was working cases with the FBI and spent her free time with Erialynn. She hadn't really dated in all that time and Emery still hoped for some miracle with her parents. Cody and Emery were engaged and happier than ever. Erialynn was in kindergarten and so smart it was shocking at times. New York was good to them but it wasn't home.
"Hey."
"Hey dad."
"How are you?" Jay asks.
"I'm good miss you guys like crazy. We've just been working. How are you?" Emery says
"Kid listen. I'm doing good. I wanted to tell you what was going on before you heard it from someone else. Hailey and I are engaged." Jay says hesitantly.
Emery doesn't say a word she just hangs up the phone she couldn't believe that he'd do that. Jay immediately calls back and there is no answer. He decides after a few attempts that he'd wait for her to reach out. Emery doesn't know what to do or say. All she could think was how do I tell mom. It was almost Christmas and they would be headed home to spend the holidays with Hank and Emery knew she had to tell her before they left. A whole week passed and Emery still didn't know what to do. Their flight left later that night and there was a lot to do before then. Emery packed Erialynn's suit case and then got herself packed. Cody and Erin had both headed into work to do a couple things before taking off and once they were home and packed they headed for the airport. They boarded their flight about 4 pm and once it was in the air Emery took her chance.
"Mom. I need to tell you something."
"What's up?"
"Dad called me last week.
"Yeah, what about it?" Erin asks oblivious.
Emery paused and tried to find the right words.
"He's engaged to Upton mom." Emery finally pieces together.
"Oh, glad he's happy." Erin says clearly hurt.
Emery colored with Erialynn and played some games to keep the little one occupied for the two and a half hour flight. Erin hardly said a word to any one the rest of the flight. The look on her face was not one Emery cared to see but she knew it all too well and it was never less heartbreaking. The flight landed and they looked around for Hank at the airport but he was nowhere to be found. So they rented a car and drove to his house. Jay had sold their house about a year after they went back to New York so they would be staying with Hank this trip. By the time they got to the house Emery had called her grandfather 4 times. She was beginning to worry.
"Mom, I'm worried."
"I'm sure he's fine, we will hear back soon I'm sure. Let's get settled." Erin says grabbing the bags and heading inside.
Emery nods and helps get the rest of the bags she gets Erialynn settled on the couch with her tablet and then heads into the kitchen.
"I'm calling Dad."
"Grandpa said he'd be there to get us. He doesn't break his promises." Emery says.
Erin knew her daughter was right but she didn't want it to be true. It seemed like everytime they came home something went wrong.
"Hey."
"Listen I'm not calling to talk dad. Have you seen grandpa?"
"He was suppose to be picking you up at the airport."
"He wasn't there. I'm worried. We can't get a hold of him."
"Give me a little bit I'll see if I can find him." Jay says hang up.
Jay walked over to Antonio and pulled him into the break room.
"Voights missing. He was supposed to pick the girls up from the airport and never showed up."
"I'll have Ruzek run his phone and I'll go with you to see if we can find him." Dawson says.
Jay and Antonio rolled out to see what they could find. If anything at all. They roll up on a accident scene a few blocks from Voights house. Right away Jay can see it's really bad and that Hanks car was right in the middle of it. He jumps out of the car and walks up to the officer to get some information.
"I need to know if Hank Voight was in that car and where he is?" Jay says flashing his badge.
"He was transported to Chicago Med in critical condition. It was a hit and run accident. Some guy ran the red light, flipped his car and was gone before the cops got here." The cop on scene told him.
They both jumped in the car and drove to the hospital. Jay wanted to check on Hank's status before going to tell everyone what had happened.
"Will they brought Hank in? Is he ok?"
"All I know is he's in surgery. He's in pretty bad condition."
Jay looks at will and then back at Dawson.
"Can I use your phone I think I left mine in the car." He asks Dawson.
Antonio hands Jay his cell and he walks over to a quieter spot. He dials a number he hadn't for awhile and then waits for someone to answer.
"Hey Dawson. What's up?"
"Erin it's me. I didn't want to tell Emery so I need you to listen. Hank is at Chicago med he was involved in a hit run. It's bad Erin. You both need to get here now."
"We will be right there." She says hanging up.
"Emery let's go. Grandpas at the hospital. Cody stay here with Erialynn, we will call you."
They rushed out the door and got in the car. The car ride felt like it lasted forever.
"I told you something was wrong. I told you we shouldn't have gone back to New York. This is all your fault." Emery says in tears.
"He got into a car accident it could have happened if we were here or not."
"You are the reason grandpa is in the hospital. You are the reason I moved back to New York. You are the reason dad is getting married to someone else. You broke us mom, you broke our family. The only time in my life I had an actual family and you ruined it all."
Emery said very upset.
Erin didn't say a single thing the rest of the ride. She felt the tears rolling down her cheeks but she just gently wiped them away. They pulled up and they ran in to find the whole squad in the waiting room.
"Uncle Will." Emery says running into his arms.
Erin hugged Antonio and Emery almost completely ignored her dad. Jay finally walked up to Emery and wrapped her in a hug. Just as Emery saw Hailey.
"I don't want her here." Emery says loudly.
"Em calm down."
"Don't tell me to calm down, my Grandpa is in surgery and we don't know if he's going to survive. I don't want her here."
"Jay it's fine. I'll leave. Stay with your daughter."
"Emery that is unacceptable you know better." Erin says.
"Like I mentioned in the car mom. It's your fault. We wouldn't even have to deal with her had you not left."
"I left to be with you and your daughter."
"No mom you got in trouble and lost your job. I was going to come home once everything settled. You and dad were suppose to get married. Not them. You were also the one who decided to leave 4 years ago and not look back."
Everyone was quiet for a minute. No one knew what to say, they just let Emery feel her feelings at that point. She was always so strong about everything. Since Erialynn came into the picture she didn't have time to feel bad for herself. The 25 year old felt like she was 15 again all the emotions and problems, She let slide the past 5 years while she was being a mom all came to the surface.
"You had every chance to stay Emery."
"I guess my past childhood trauma stopped me from making that decision." Emery says as she sees the doctor coming around the corner.
"He's fine. Surgery was touch and go but he should be just fine."
Emery fell into her mothers arms and just cried. She was so happy that her grandpa would be fine. She couldn't go through losing the most important man in her life. The one stable thing in her entire life. Everyone left the hospital except Emery and her parents. Hank wasn't awake yet so they just sat by his bed side and waited.
"I'm sorry." Emery quietly whispered.
Jay and Erin just looked at each other. They couldn't imagine she had all this bottled up.
"Dad and you are suppose to be together. You shouldn't have left and you should have come after us." Emery says pointing to her parents who were both in the wrong.
"You're right. We shouldn't have moved. I should have stayed and fought them taking my badge. Maybe our family would be together. Maybe you'd have your brother here. But those weren't the choices that were made nor was that how anything happened. Your dad is marrying Hailey and you need to get on board with that. She has never been anything but nice to you. How you're treating her is wrong."
Just as Emery goes in for another attack on her parents Hank starts to wake up. He moans and stirs around slightly.
"Hey grandpa."
"Hey kiddo."
"You were in an accident. You're lucky to be alive." Erin says, grabbing his hand."
"Well I'm glad I'm still here to see your beautiful faces." He says squeezing Erin's hand.
Once they all know Hank is going to be ok they head home for the night. Emery says goodbye to her dad and climbs in the car. Erin and Jay just silent look at each other, smile and go their separate ways.
