"Bombarda Maxima!"
A chunk of brick exploded; bits and pieces going awry.
Harry huffed out of magical exhaustion.
The Room Of Requirement was filled with multiple practice dummies, sections of walls made with different material; wood, stone, and glass were built in the middle of the room, a few meters apart from each other. A bookcase, full of spells for combat and first-aid filled, placed on the side out of range of any stray magic or rubble.
Harry normally wouldn't have expended so much of his energy, but the circumstances had his rage almost overflowing within himself.
It started off alright; a normal Quidditch against the Slytherins. Nothing more than a few jeers and the usual glares of contempt. The only change was the debut of the new Gryffindor keeper; Ron Weasley. Ron had looked nervous but the steely look of determination that Harry had seen him wearing before the match had allayed his worries that Ron's nerves might make him play worse. Although he hadn't expected the mocking mantra that the Slytherins had concocted, and though Ron had been unnerved for a bit, he had shook it off and continued to play; his contribution expanding the score gap tremendously and the insulting tune of "Weasley Is Our King" had been silenced and the badges they wore to make fun of Ron now meant nothing. It had almost been a mercy that Harry had finally caught the snitch. Of course, Malfoy didn't take this lying down and proceeded to anger him and George. One thing led to another and Gryffindor was suddenly without a seeker and two beaters, all thanks to Umbridge.
The news of Hagrid's return had raised his spirits up, but it quickly dampened when Umbridge intruded and did what she did best; be an absolutely horrible person.
During their return to the dorm Harry couldn't keep the itch of energy and anger threatening to explode under control any longer, so he had told Ron and Hermione to go on without him. They both looked at him worriedly but complied and left him to his own devices.
Which now led to the current position of the Boy-who-lived. Taking his anger out by training and expanding his knowledge of magical combat; the aftermath of the Triwizard Tournament and the subsequent attack of his character by the press had him start taking matters to his own hands. Dumbledore, as much as he respected him, didn't seem to want to train him in any sort of way, so he had decided that to train himself, if only to give himself any advantage he could get. The discovery of the Room of Requirement was a godsend and it helped him make progress that satisfied him. Training the D.A. was also aiding him in his endeavours of finally putting snake-face down for good.
After catching his breath, he thought and wanted the brick wall to be whole again, and the room restored the wall to its original, non-exploded state. Taking aim, he started to let the magic flow in his whole body to his wand. He waved his wand and the incantation ready to leave his lips.
"I think it's best that you wear some kind of protection."
Harry's eyes widened in surprise and he leveled his wand behind him, where he had heard the voice.
Right on the face of Luna Lovegood.
"Well, I don't know if the room is capable of repairing my body, so it's probably best you don't use the exploding charm on me." Luna gave a serene smile, eyes never blinking as she stared right through his wand.
Harry blinked and quickly lowered his wand, "Sorry Luna, you just startled me a bit." Harry willed the room for two chairs to appear and the room complied, "Wanna take a seat?"
Luna's smile never faltered, "Why yes, I would love to." She walked across to him and took a seat opposite of Harry.
Harry took a seat as well, "So, what brings you here? Were you going to use the room?"
Luna softly shook her head, "Oh, no. Not at all, it's just that the Shaloms had been awfully fidgety and I presume that meant there was a lot of magical activity going around somewhere in Hogwarts. Normally I wouldn't take notice but they were twitching in the middle of the night so I decided to investigate. I assume they were like this because of you "
Harry nodded, though he didn't really know what a Shalom was, "So they led you to me?" Harry asked, and Luna responded with a happy nod.
"Yes, yes they did. You should really heed my advice though, pieces of rubble might shoot right across from you and damage your body." Luna gave the room a cursory look around,
Harry didn't know what to make of Luna. He had only known her only for a short while and yet he felt as if she was a kindred spirit; he thought she was weird but that didn't deter him from making her his friend, and the fact she didn't seem to care for his scar and its implication of him being either the saviour of the wizarding world or a lying, good-for-nothing boy only led him to have taken a liking to the odd Ravenclaw. Though not as much as another, equally odd Ravenclaw.
Whilst Harry was lost in his thoughts, Luna had stood up and started picking up books from the bookcase, "So, I presume this isn't only for our upcoming D.A. meeting?"
Harry snapped out of his daze and glanced towards Luna, "No, no it's not. If anything it's for my own sanity."
Luna continued flipping the book in her hand, "Yes, I do understand that making objects explode can be cathartic for some." She paused on a page and placed her finger on the words in the textbook, "The feeling of exhaustion after the incantation of several spells in succession or one massive spell is falsely believed to be only magical in nature. The exhaustion is also physical as the movement of magic within the body of a witch or wizard can be observed to exert energy physically. Thus, to be able to handle more spells, one must be physically fit."
Harry's eyebrows rose in intrigue as Luna read the passage. Luna, seeing this, ambled to Harry and gave him the book. Harry opened up the page that she had read, "Hm, well if that's true then I better start doing some physical exercises. Now I'm starting to miss Oliver's hectic training schedule, at least it had some benefits other than training for Quidditch."
Luna simply nodded along - Although Harry didn't know if Luna even knew who Oliver Wood was - and airily looked around her, "What kind of decorations will we put up?"
Harry's head rose up from the pages of the book, "What do you mean?"
"I'm talking about the next D.A. meeting of course. It would be remiss of us to ignore the Christmas tradition of decorating for the jolly holiday." Luna's tone shifted into playful territory. Harry grinned a bit; it wouldn't hurt to decorate the Room of Requirement for the spirit of Christmas.
Out of nowhere, a pop indicated the arrival of a house elf. Harry turned his head and sure enough there was Dobby.
"Hello mister Harry Potter sir. Dobby couldn't help but overhear that yous want the Come and Go Room to be decorated." Dobby wrung his hands nervously. Harry smiled and gave Dobby a warm look.
"Well Dobby, as a matter of fact we do. Do you mind helping us?" Harry watched as Dobby's eyes fluttered with tears threatening to pour out of them.
Dobby nodded his head, his ears flapping all about, "Yes! Of course mister Harry Potter sir, Dobby will do his best to decorate the Come and Go Room!" And before Harry could even react, Dobby vanished with a snap.
Luna, throughout the whole ordeal, kept up the small, serene smile, "Well, looks like that matter is settled then. Though I do hope he doesn't use mistletoes, those things are infested with Nargles." Harry chuckled at Luna's nonplussed demeanour.
Harry looked at the clock hanging on the wall and saw it was almost past curfew, "Well I best be off, don't want Umbridge to ruin my life more than she already has. Do you want me to come and walk you to your dorm?"
Luna softly shook her head, "Oh don't worry about me. I tend to take the scenic route back; the paintings and armor tend to be much more beautiful in the moonlight." She said with a dreamy smile.
"I don't mind. I'm not in any hurry myself." Harry remarked but Luna again shook her head.
"That is kind of you Harry but I must again decline. It would be unjust of me to accompany the man of one of my fellow Ravenclaws. " Luna stood up with a playful smile on her face, not taking any notice of the spluttering boy in front of her.
Harry watched, dumbfounded, as Luna strolled next to the exit, "Wha- But how did you…" Luna turned around and gave him a small smile once again.
"People tend to not look at their surroundings very often. I'm happy that Lilith finally found someone she is happy with; she's one of the few housemates that's been nice to me." With that last sad line, she took her leave.
Harry slumped back down on his seat. He didn't really mind if Luna knew; and if he were entirely honest with himself, he was ecstatic that Lilith was happy with him. He should speak to her about Luna though, her parting words made him worry for his newfound friend.
But that was a conversation to be held in the future. He shrouded himself with his invisibility cloak and made his return to the Gryffindor dorms.
"Alright everyone, that about does it for today's session. Remember to read the material in advance and we'll see you all after the Christmas break!"
Harry's voice echoed through the room, multiple students taking a breather after their D.A. meeting. Harry looked on as some students picked up after themselves and made their way out of the room; some even came to him and bid him goodbye, which we returned with a slight nod and a smile to everyone.
Thanks to Luna's contribution, they had started with physical fitness training; their were of course some grumbles of discontent but after reading the passage out loud that Luna had discovered they had all quietened down and followed his instructions to keep up a regime of at least a couple sets of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. He didn't expect all of them to keep up the routine during the break but if at least a dozen or so of them actually did, then it would be a win in his book.
Though watching the D.A. trying to withstand the burning pain of muscles being pushed to their limits was a bit amusing in hindsight. Poor Hermione was shaking like a leaf throughout the whole thing; good thing Ron was there, he seemed to have helped Hermione somewhat.
And of course his eyes would sometimes drift to Lilith; and to his surprise she didn't do half bad. Seemed like being a P.I. was taxing work for the body as well. Her form was excellent and she didn't seem to have any trouble catching her breath. Obviously, he had only been watching out of kindness; just in case she had any sort of trouble like the other D.A. members. Yes, no other ulterior motives at all...
'Pull yourself together man!' Harry quickly shook his head and surreptitiously looked around him, checking if anyone had seen him looking far too long at Lilith's direction. Thankfully it seemed like no one did; though he did see a small smile on Hermione, Ron, and Luna's faces directed at him.
After the physical training, they had returned to the simple but effective training of practicing the stunner and shield charm; and true to his and Hermione's word, Lilith had started tutoring some of the other members having difficulty. Watching her teach had been a joy and he even thought of one day making her a part of his and Hermione's planning for future D.A. meetings. He had a feeling they would go along well.
Unbeknownst to Harry, two pairs of eyes were trained on him.
"Do you see what I'm seeing?"
"Looks like little Harrykins has a particular feeling towards a certain female."
"What do you propose we do?"
"Well, Christmas is near."
"So, spread some cheer and joy?"
"Spread some cheer and joy."
Right then Harry felt a cold shiver spread throughout his body.
And he was none the wiser of two, twin Cheshire-like grins aimed right at him.
After everyone said their goodbyes, Harry was left all alone in the Room of Requirement.
Harry's attention was focused on the multiple notes Hermione had written down during the practice sessions; observations of the members' strengths and weaknesses. Quite suddenly, he felt a presence behind him. The person was trying to sneak up on him, but even after the practice sessions his body was still running on a bit of adrenaline, so he waited on whoever was behind him to make their move.
He felt a poke on his shoulder. He turned around…
"Boo!"
And there, hands poised like claws, was Lilith Moon.
"Hello Lilith, nice day we're having isn't it?"
Harry's nonplussed reaction and nonchalant question caused Lilith to pout.
Lilith crossed her arms, "You know, if you knew I was going to scare you, the least you can do is at least pretend to be frightened."
Harry scratched his cheek and smiled, "Well, I'll try to remember that whenever you try to sneak up on me."
Lilith stuck her tongue at him and Harry chuckled.
"Harry."
Harry's blood froze at the voice behind him and he slowly turned around to look at none other than Cho Chang.
Harry tried to smile but it turned out more as a grimace, "Oh, err… Hello Cho, what's the matter?"
Cho looked down to her feet and shuffled a bit, "Harry, is it fine if we talk for a bit?" Cho then noticed Lilith, "Alone."
"Ah, you know I would love to but… you see the thing is…" Harry fumbled and Cho frowned at him and Lilith unnaturally stayed quiet beside him.
'Bloody hell, please someone save me!'
"Oh, Hello Lilith, Cho, Harry."
Three heads turned to see Luna Lovegood, sporting her butterbeer necklace and dirigible plum earrings.
Harry fought the urge to whoop out loud.
"What do you want?" Cho said with a hint of derision, which did not go unnoticed as Harry adorned a small frown.
Luna - who either didn't notice or cared of Cho's tone - smiled her serene smile, "Professor Flitwick is calling for you, he seemed a bit cross. He also called for Marietta." Cho's face turned ashen as Luna relayed the summon by Professor Flitwick. Cho turned to Harry and her mouth opened but no sound came out. Without even uttering a farewell, she quickly ran outside the room, closing the door with a resounding bang!
Luna, unperturbed by Cho's sudden exit, returned her gaze to Harry and Lilith, "Professor Flitwick seemed to have found my belongings and had the assumption that both Cho and Marietta were the culprits. Now, how did he ever come across this information?"
Harry's face took on a look of bewilderment, before facing Lilith. Who tried her best to seem unsuspecting by whistling; only no actual whistle was coming out of her mouth and only air was released.
Luna's mouth contorted into a grin before gently stepping near Lilith and began hugging her softly, "Thank you." She simply said, and Lilith's face turned a bright shade of red.
"Anytime, just uhh… Tell me if anything like this ever happens again and I'll help you out." Lilith patted her back awkwardly and she saw as Harry had a look of warmth on his face.
Luna released Lilith from her arms and gave a bright grin, "If you insist."
She then began walking to the exit, confusing both Harry and Lilith, before turning back around as she stood next to the door.
"I think I'll have a little chat with Barnabas about how he does his ballet routine; and if anyone were to ever come near, I'd call out their names rather noisily so that they can come and enjoy our talk. I do apologize if you hear me being loud. Goodbye then." Harry swore he saw Luna winked at him before she left.
Now, the two were actually alone together.
"So, mind telling me what Luna was talking about?" Harry leaned on the table next to them. Lilith shrugged and sat on the aforementioned table.
"I don't know what she was talking about. But my theory would be that someone had found out that Cho and Marietta had been bullying Luna and maybe took a few incriminating pieces of evidence and then gave it to Professor Flitwick so that they could be punished. Just a theory of course." Lilith closed her eyes and nodded.
Harry hummed in thought, "Pretty good theory. I guess Cho wasn't as nice as I thought."
Lilith opened one eye to gaze at him, "Does it bother you? That she bullied Luna?"
"Of course it does. Luna is a friend of mine and if any friend of mine gets hurt physically or emotionally then I try my best to help them." Harry rubbed the back of his head, "But I never thought Cho could be capable of doing something so… Horrid."
Lilith's face was marred with a solemn frown, "Cho wasn't always like this. I guess she changed after… He died." Lilith cautiously glanced at Harry.
Harry, for his part, didn't seem to be fazed at all by Lilith's insinuation. Silence then befell on them.
Harry snapped out of his daze and tried to get the mood back to a happier atmosphere, "Well, if I ever do meet the one who helped Luna, then I'll make sure to thank them."
Lilith gave a shy smile, "I'm sure they would agree that it was no problem at all." She stood up and gestured towards the door, "Come on, I'm pretty sure Luna is still out there keeping a watch out for us. We'll need to get her back to the dorm and then we can scout Umbridge after dinner."
Harry nodded and took a step to follow Lilith.
Out of the blue, Lilith fell down on him.
"Woah! You alright?" Harry asked Lilith, his arms under Lilith's own.
Lilith stood back up on the spot, brushing herself off, "Yeah, but what the heck is this?" She extended her arm outward and was met with resistance from what appeared to be a wall.
A sudden blaring sound came from above them and they both looked up to see where the noise was coming from.
Only to see a small, dainty mistletoe hanging from the ceiling.
"Is that a…" Harry trailed off. Another sound came out of the mistletoe but this time it was two voices.
"Hello and a good day to you both!" Harry knew the voices emanating from the small decoration and was now dreading what would come next.
"We at Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes proudly present our new product. The Mistletoe!"
"If you haven't guessed, this little baddy comes with a few special modifications to amp up the cheer and festivities."
Harry was now sporting a headache; if he ever gets his hands on those two, there will be hell to pay. He spared a glance at Lilith and she seemed to have taken this in stride, so that was at least something positive.
"Right you are my ugly twin; this bad boy comes with an environmentally-enhanced magical field. That means the more magic is in the air, the stronger the magical field!"
"Fun for both muggles and wizards alike!"
"And of course, the only way to get out of it…"
"Is with a little…"
"Smooch!" The twins both said with an obvious glee cast on their voice.
'Yep, those two will definitely pay for this' Harry vowed. His face now was a bright, red bulb and Lilith's face was doing its best in replicating the look.
"Now of course you could wait it out."
"But the field lasts for twenty-four hours!"
"So unless you placed this near your bed, then it's probably best you get on with it quickly!"
"And if you ever find yourself wanting more toys like this one."
"Then come on down to…"
"WEASLEY'S WIZARDING WHEEZES!"
An applause played as the twins' voices now became silent.
Harry shook his head, the twins really outdid themselves on this one, before turning to Lilith, "I'm really sorry about this Lilith. I'll make sure the twins get what's coming to them."
Lilith gave a hum of appreciation, "This is a really good piece of magic, I must admit. I guess the infamous Weasley twins really don't hold back." Lilith held her wand up to the wall, muttering a few words under her breath.
"Trying to figure out a way out of here?" Harry attempted to calmly ask her, though he couldn't stop the thought that maybe this wasn't such a bad predicament to be in.
Lilith hummed a positive hum, "Well, trying really is the correct term. Whatever they did to create the mistletoe I can't seem to make any heads or tails of it." She turned around, her eyes glued to the ground, "That means to actually leave, we might have to…"
Harry wiped his sweaty hands on his trousers, "Erm, well uh… Do you want to… Or maybe I should…"
Lilith fiddled with her fingers as Harry continued to stutter. Finally, with trepidation in her small steps, she went up to him, put her hand on his head, pulled him in...
And kissed him on the cheek.
The two trapped students blushed, and they both looked up expectantly as the Mistletoe began to boom once more.
"Wow, it seems like these two didn't hear our instructions correctly, dear old, troll, brother of mine."
"We did say a smooch, not a peck! That means lips on lips you two!"
Alright, if Harry had any reservation in killing those two, then this made those reservations flame up like a forest fire.
Lilith sighed in defeat and turned to Harry once again, "Sorry, I thought that would have been enough."
"Do- don't worry about it. Not like I mind it." Harry muttered. He caressed the cheek she kissed, his face a flaming shade of red.
Lilith's face burned as well at his bold statement.
Both stood still, not daring to move. The roaring fire in the fireplace becoming unneeded as Harry's body warms itself with just the thought of what was coming next; and as he watched Lilith fidgeting, her fingers steepled and dancing with nervousness and anxiety, he grew the resolve to finally let his feelings bare to her, without a chance for any misunderstandings or errors. To take the leap of faith he needed to take.
He slowly took her hand in his own, and her eyes widened at his touch. She looked at him with a modicum of shyness, her breath slowly becoming shallow. Harry brushed her hair out of her face and she shook at his light touch; then he closed his eyes and neared her face to hers.
It felt like a million years; he almost thought that she had recoiled away from him when he brought his face closer to hers.
But then he felt it.
The faint feeling of lips on his.
Her lips on his.
The Mistletoe, having gone unnoticed by then by the two teenagers, slowly wilted and transformed into a ball. It steadily grew in size then exploded with a quiet pop! Bits of gorgeous snowflakes fluttered down on top of the kissing P.I. and her assistant, who continued despite their new found freedom from the trap made by the Weasley twins.
At last, they parted to breathe in some air. Their faces flushed with warmth and love.
"Wow, I mean… Wow" Harry was at a lost for words. He didn't really get what was so great about kissing, having heard Seamus and Dean discussing the topic among many other risqué topics, but if this was anything to go by, he might get addicted.
Lilith let out a chortle - One that nearly made Harry go in for another kiss - and smiled lovingly at him. Harry reciprocated the smile with one of his own, one full of fondness and unrelenting intimacy.
Lilith coyly twisted a long strand of black locks with her finger, "Guess this means we can drop the pretend part of the whole act huh?"
Harry held her closer, taking in the cherry he smelt so many nights before, "I don't think we need to call it an act anymore." Harry smiled as Lilith's face brightened even more at his reminder.
"Well, come on. We can't keep Luna waiting; I'm sure even she will get tired of talking to Barnabas." Harry clung to her hand and fitted his fingers to hers.
Lilith squeezed his hand, a tiny trickle of laughter making his heart soar, "Oh, you don't know Luna. I once saw her talking to Peeves about the many different ways one could use a stick of butter for over three hours. That was a very informative night."
They laughed and exited the Room of Requirement together. Where Luna, and unexpectedly Fred and George were having a candid conversation with Barnabas the Barmy.
"I mean, what's there to not understand? The trolls are obviously the right creature for ballet!" Harry heard Barnabas shouting at the three Hogwarts students.
Fred - Or was it George? - scratched his head in confusion, but the quirk on his lips betrayed his true intention, "But what about an acromantula? I bet their legs can do some pretty crazy stuff."
Barnabas scoffed and turned his head away from the twins and Luna, "I see now that I'm talking to a bunch of simpletons." With that, Barnabas walked out of frame of his canvas.
Luna turned to the twin on her left, "I think you made him upset Fred."
The now identified twin met the eyes of George, "I don't know, I think I made a pretty good point."
George brought his arms up in a shrug, then turned to see Lilith and Harry, "Oh, look at this Fred! Looks like our little ruse paid off."
Fred smirked at the newly designated couple holding hands, "Hah! I knew The Mistletoe would work!" Fred and George slid next to Harry and Lilith's side.
"So, how did it go?"
"Did you two do the dirty?"
Harry rolled his eyes but smiled down at Lilith as she glared at the twin on her side.
"I'm mad that you two played that prank on us." Lilith then gave Harry's hand another squeeze of affection, "But I must admit that the results were satisfactory."
The twin gave the both of them a pat on their shoulders.
"No problem! Anything for one of our shareholders." Fred winked at Harry.
Luna ambled closer to the couple and brought them into a hug, "Oh, I am so happy for you both!"
Harry reciprocated the hug with one arm, and Lilith did the same. George and Fred glanced towards each other before breaking into wide grins.
"Group hug!"
The twins joined in and hugged all three of them. The weird huddle of hugs in the middle of the hallway then broke apart, bright smiles all around their faces.
"Soooo… No hard feelings, right Harrykins?" George asked Harry. Harry hummed in thought for a moment, making the twins sweat a bit from anticipation. Finally, he smiled at both of them.
"No hard feelings." Harry was amused by the look of relief on their faces, "But there might be another pair of oblivious people that need a helping hand in the romance department as well."
The twins' intrigue rose up as Harry brought them in closer and whispered to them in secret. Lilith didn't hear a word of their little discussion but the look of absolute glee from the twins gave Lilith a feeling of trepidation.
The twins then gave a bow to both Luna and Lilith, "Apologies ladies, but it seems our expertise is needed somewhere else. Tatah and don't do anything we wouldn't do!" The twins winked at Harry and sped off to who knows where.
Lilith walked next to Harry, "Do I even want to know?" Harry just gave a smirk that only enhanced the feeling of trepidation she had felt earlier before.
"You'll see." Harry intoned mysteriously, "Coming with us Luna?"
Luna skipped next to Lilith, "Why, if you're offering."
The Gryffindor and two Ravenclaws made their way to the Great Hall. The whole way Harry listened in on Lilith and Luna's conversation; schoolwork, The Quibbler, Cho and Marietta, the bespectacled boy learned much more of both Luna and Lilith's relationship and he was content in knowing that Luna at least had a friend in the house that seemed to have an indifference towards her due to her not fitting the social norm.
As they neared the Great Hall, they could hear a bunch of cheering and whistling. As they entered he discovered the reason for the applause and celebration.
"This isn't funny you two!"
Hermione had her hands on her hips and a glare that could kill Medusa. Although the victims of the stare only had the same wide, glee filled grin.
"Come on Hermione, just a little kiss and you two'll be out in a jiffy!" George gave them a waggle of his eyebrows.
Ron was unusually quiet in all of this but the reddened tip of his ears had revealed his true feelings in the situation.
Harry let go of Lilith's hand - a fleeting smile directed at her - then made his way to where both Ron and Hermione were trapped.
Hermione noticed his arrival and faced him, "Harry! Please tell Fred and George to get us out of this contraption!"
Harry just gave a look at the twins, and the twins started to explain, "Sorry Harry, even we can't bring this thing down; made it impossible to remove it in any way except for the obvious. Makes it more fun that way, but she doesn't really believe us."
Harry then turned his gaze to Hermione, and she crossed her arms in a huff, "Do you really think I would believe them after they did this!?" She presented the whole trap as if it wasn't obvious to Harry.
Harry then made eye contact with Ron.
Harry raised his eyebrow at him.
Ron gulped, inhaled, and exhaled.
Then made his way to Hermione, held her face in his hands...
And crashed her lips on his.
The deafening shouts of the Hogwarts populace caused the glass panes in the Great Hall to buzz by sheer volume.
As the walls of The Mistletoe came down, Ron wasted no time in running away. Leaving Hermione gaping, like a deer in the headlights. Harry walked up to Hermione and gave her back a push.
"It'd be best if you go talk to him."
Hermione turned to look at Harry, before nodding and ran to chase down Ron.
Ginny moved to make a spot for Harry, as he sat down to start eating dinner he heard Ginny ask him, "What just happened?"
Harry gazed towards the Ravenclaw table, where he saw the subject of his endearment make a second of eye contact with him that made his heart skip a beat, and the smile that he saw her displaying only made him fall harder for her.
"An early Christmas miracle I guess."
