Jarek followed Sisu for what seemed like forever. Or perhaps it felt like forever considering he was too focused on his current condition. Every time he glanced upon his new form, he tried telling himself he was dreaming. But after pinching himself more than once, he realized that wasn't the case, this was the reality of the situation: he was a dragon.
He felt his tail drag upon the ground. Moving it was still a foreign concept to him, it was like having a fifth limb. He tried moving it up and down, every which way, but he settled for dragging it. All the while Sisu led him. They were moving further away from Heart, all the better for Jarek he supposed. He didn't want to stay too close to the very tribe he robbed. Silently he cursed, it was that damned job that put him in this predicament. He wasn't sure if this transformation was some (un)lucky break or a cosmic joke? Regardless this was his situation now, and he just had to accept it. Though that was mere reluctance on his part. He was born a human, and if he had his way he would die a human.
"You okay skippy?" Sisu's voice broke him out of his thoughts. Jarek hardly acknowledged her, turning away without a response, "Okay stupid question, but don't worry, we're almost there."
Jarek didn't want to act rude, but considering what had just happened to him, he supposed she was sympathetic.
But at least the dragoness was right about one thing.
"And wouldn't you know, here we are!"
Jarek looked up as they passed some trees and there lo and behold was a sight for the eyes. The first thing Jarek noticed was the vast plethora of colors. It was a like living rainbow as dragons milled about. The settlement itself appeared mostly on flat land, probably a field they had claimed. The buildings themselves held a rounded shape. It was too far away to really gain enough of their features, but overall this place seemed like an actual town.
"You guys live here?" Jarek asked, his eyes growing wide with astonishment.
"Yep! Welcome to Dragontown Kumandra!" Sisu announced, "It's still a work in progress, and we aren't the only dragon settlement around, but we've made it work."
"This is a work in progress?" Jarek asked skeptically.
From the looks of the town, it looked finished.
"We've been thinking of maybe adding a spa and my sister Pranee wants to open a bakery," Sisu said.
"A bakery?" Jarek repeated.
"Yeah ever since we started this place she's really gotten into baking," Sisu explained, "She's been pouring over recipe books day and night but she's getting there."
Jarek smacked his lips a tad. Bakeries meant more than bread. Cakes, pies, tarts, he had to force himself from thinking of them.
"Come on, follow me," Sisu directed.
"Where are we going exactly?" Jarek asked.
"To see my brother Pengu, he's the smartest dragon around, so if anyone can help you it's him," Sisu replied confidently.
Jarek had no choice but to follow, and so he did.
XXX
The Datu Clan was widely regarded as one of the more prominent dragon families. When the Druun first appeared, they were the last stand to drive them away. Though the family was down to five siblings, two brothers, and three sisters. There was their cousin Reela, but she wasn't a Datu by birth, yet they did share blood. Each of the siblings held a different trait that set them apart, and not just their unique variety of magic.
Amba was very observant. It was something their mother had noted. She wasn't the type to vocally announce her presence preferring to keep to the background, which made her glow magic all the more ironic. But there were benefits. Not saying anything made her notice many things others overlooked. The sights, the sounds, and the smells. Speaking of which.
"OH NO!"
Amba was alerted to the nearby dwelling. A burning smell wafted from it and a trail of smoke seeped out of the doorway. Swiftly she went inside and found her sister Pranee hurrying inside carrying a tray of buns. The buns themselves held a blanket of black upon them. The dragoness began to fan away at the smoke, trying to direct it towards the window so as to not fill the room.
"Put them in a little longer than recommended eh?" Amba spoke.
"I don't know what went wrong!" Pranee whined, "I followed the recipe to a tee!"
"What's that smell? Another voice asked accompanied by the appearance of their brother Jagan.
Sniffing the air, Jagan's nose wrinkled, "Ugh again Pranee?"
"Don't give me that Jagan! I'm still learning!" Pranee said defensively.
"You've been "learning" for months," Jagan sarcastically retorted.
Pranee was about to deliver a rebuttal to her brother's statement, but Amba cut her off.
"Lay off her Jagan, Pranee's getting better," Amba defended.
Pranee granted her little sister a thankful look.
"Well try not to burn the whole house down, I want my mane to remain unsinged, took years to perfect this!" Jagan stated as he fluffed his mane.
"You know Cousin Reela is not here, there's no need for you to make yourself look nice," Pranee sighed.
"It's not for Reela," Jagan said almost defensively, "I just like looking my best."
Pranee granted her brother an unconvinced look, "Don't try to deny it, it's for Reela."
"Can't blame you though, I mean Reela's pretty, rich, and those fancy leaves she smokes, all of that would be right up your alley." Amba listed
"I mean ignoring the fact she's our cousin," Pranee added.
"First off, Reela isn't just a pretty face, she has personality, her money doesn't matter to me, and I don't smoke," Jagan declared, the defense in his voice growing all the more evident.
Pranee strode over to her brother and carefully sniffed her brother's mane, "Yeah you can cologne that mane all you want little brother, but you can't completely get rid of the smoke, besides we all know what you like doing in your spare time. You're a little hedonist."
Jagan was about to argue when Amba's voice cut them off, "Sisu's back!"
The three siblings halted what they were doing and looking outside, they could see the familiar blue shape of their sister.
"Hey fam! How's it hanging?" Sisu greeted.
Jagan was the first one out the door, "Eh nothing much Sis, unless you count Pranee nearly burning the entire village down!"
"Oh, would you stop exaggerating! So I burned my buns a little, it's not a big deal!" Pranee snapped.
Sisu winced, making a breathing sound with her teeth, "Eww you should probably put some cream on them, distract from the burntness."
While Pranee seemed to consider that idea, Amba was the next to speak up, "Who's that?"
Everyone present noticed Jarek, and curious eyes were granted.
Jarek raised up his claws and meekly said, "Um...hello?"
"Everyone, this is-" Sisu began.
"Sisu! So this is what you've been doing? You had a boyfriend behind our backs!" Jagan declared.
Pranee brushed her mane a tad, "A really handsome boyfriend," She muttered.
Sisu stood alert, "Boyfriend!? No, he's not-"
"So stranger what's your name? My name's Jagan, Sisu's handsome brother!" Jagan declared confidently.
Before Sisu could speak again, Pranee bolted towards Jarek.
"Hi, there! I'm Pranee, I'm Sisu's big sister!" She excitedly greeted.
"Hi, I'm-"
"So what's your name, where are you from do you like baked goods and-"
"Pranee!" Sisu interrupted. One her sister halted in her speech, Sisu took the time to reclaim her earlier attention, "First off, his name is Jarek, two we are not a couple, and three I fished him out of the river."
The trio of siblings looked on at their middle sister curiously, taking in the information but building up questions nonetheless.
"Where's Pengu? We need to see him," Said Sisu.
"He's not here, he's at the temple I think?" Amba suggested.
"Sounds like him," Sisu said, though there wasn't a hint of exasperation in her voice. Looking back towards Jarek, Sisu called, "Come on Skippy, let's get going."
Jagan gave a little laugh, "Thought his name was Jarek. Guess you already have pet names for each other?"
"Oh be quiet," Sisu dismissed, but not unkindly.
Jagan seemed to take that statement in good stride, for he showed no sign of being offended.
As Jarek and Sisu walked off towards the aforementioned temple, Jagan leaned in towards his sisters and whispered, "Don't know about you but I want to see how this relationship develops."
"Doesn't mean they're a couple, but I admit he is cute," Pranee declared.
The two siblings joined after Sisu and her guest, leaving little Amba behind. Amba could tell however that something interesting was brewing. After all, Jarek seemed like he was a stranger, least in this settlement, and she admittedly wanted to see where this went.
All in all another interesting day in Dragontown Kumandra.
A/N: I tried to establish the personalities of Sisu's siblings in this chapter.
