A/N Well, there will be just one last chapter about Universe 2 after this. I want to express my gratitude to SRAM and bamadude for their reviews and for all of you who have stayed with me.
I still own nothing.
Missy couldn't get to sleep. She looked over at her husband who was sleeping beside her. She was filled with conflicting feelings.
The strongest was love. She did love him. But she also realized the visit of the other Leonard had brought back feelings and doubts she had hoped she had long ago put behind her.
Finally deciding she wasn't going to get to sleep, she carefully got out of bed and putting on a robe, made her way to the kitchen.
She poured herself a drink of water. Moving out to the couch, she sat down and thought back to when she first met Leonard and the others. She had to smile as she remembered how they had acted around her. She had been relieved when Penny rescued her. But when Leonard came over and asked her out, she had surprised herself by agreeing.
She also remembered how he had asked Penny whether she was still going out with a guy named Mike before he asked to talk to her.
It was apparent to her that Penny was Leonard's first love, but also believed he loved her. Then Penny got involved with Sheldon. She made herself believe that it had nothing to do with her and Leonard, but knew she was kidding herself.
That was confirmed when Leonard left Caltech to go to UCLA. Everyone knew it was because of Penny.
She wondered if any of this would have come up if the thing had not happened with Leonard. In any case, it had happened and had brought back doubts and feelings she had thought long suppressed. She also believed the same was true of the others.
At that moment Leonard came out of the bedroom in his red robe. In spite of the situation, she had to smile to herself. Penny and she had often discussed the idea of sneaking the robe out of his closet and burning it.
Leonard was speaking, "What's the matter, Missy? Couldn't sleep?"
Missy looked up at him. For a moment, she thought of just saying nothing and going back to bed with him. But then she knew she needed to get her head together. She needed to know about the things that were bothering her.
She gestured to the couch, "Why don't you sit down?"
After he was seated she asked, "Leonard, why didn't you visit Missy in that other world?"
Leonard was surprised, he thought they had covered this, "As I told you, she was married to someone else. I didn't see any reason to disturb or confuse her."
"If you had been stuck in that world, would you have stayed married to Penny?"
"I suppose." He hesitated, "Missy, I didn't cheat on you with her."
Again, Missy looked at him, knowing she should stop but she knew she couldn't. "Leonard, I want you to think about this question and be honest with yourself and me."
She took a breath, "When you found that I was married to someone else in that universe, were you disappointed, were you hurt? Did you ever consider that if you were stuck there, you would want to try to be with her?"
Leonard stared at her. He thought back to when he had arrived in the other world, when he discovered he was married to Penny. How he had felt when he heard Missy of that world was married.
He looked at his wife. He thought of lying, of saying he had but he knew he had to tell the truth. He looked into her eyes, "No."
She nodded. Then she asked, "Leonard, why didn't you take me when you guys went to see this Farrah-Fowler woman?"
Leonard was stunned by the question. He thought about what she was saying. He was sad to realize that he had not even considered it. Was that worse or better than if he had thought about it and decided that she shouldn't go.
He also remembered what he had thought about when he was there, how it seemed so natural for the four of them being together.
As he fought to say something, Missy nodded sadly. Then she reached out and held his hands. "I think I will go home for a while. I think we both need to do some thinking."
Leonard was shocked. His first inclination was to protest, that she was taking this too seriously, that she was being unfair. But he realized that he could understand. They did need to take a serious look at what had happened.
He squeezed her hands, "I do love you, Missy."
She smiled sadly, "I love you, too." She sighed, "But I think we both know that this whole thing with the other Leonard has made us face some things we thought we had all put behind us. I just think we need some time apart, to be frank with ourselves. I still hope we can discover we want to stay together."
Leonard nodded, "I hate to admit it, but you are probably right." Paused, "And I also hope we discover we want us to be together."
Penny wasn't overly surprised when Missy called her and said she wanted to talk. But there was something in her voice that made her realize something was going on.
After they were settled in the den of the house, Penny could see definitely see that something was bothering Missy.
After taking a big gulp of her wine, Missy looked up, "Leonard and I have decided to split up for a while."
It was fortunate that Penny had not taken a drink because she would have surely spit it out. Of all the things she thought might be bothering Missy, that was not one of them. She finally managed to get out, "Oh, my God, why? What happened?"
Missy took another drink, "Nothing Leonard did. It was just a combination of a lot of things. Him not being interested at all in my counterpart in the other universe. Him not asking me to join you guys when you visited that Amy woman."
She paused and looked at Penny, "Just the feeling that since that other Leonard was here that things I long thought buried have resurfaced." She hesitated and then plunged ahead. "Things about you and Leonard."
Penny was thrown. She had felt much the same feelings. She knew it was possible it could make things difficult, that it was possible it could cause problems. But she had never expected anything like this so soon. She stalled by finishing off her glass.
She finally said, "Missy, you don't think that Leonard and I…"
"No, No, of course not. It is just that we both knew that Leonard only became interested in me because of what happened to you and him."
She sighed, "We both know how much he loved you." She paused, "Still loves you."
There was a long silence as they both poured themselves another glass.
Penny knew she should say something, protesting that she was wrong about Leonard, but she had felt something of the same because of the two Leonards.
Finally, Missy took another big gulp, "Penny, do you love Leonard?"
There it was, the elephant in the room. The question that Penny had been dancing around in her own mind. Her immediate response was to say no, or at least that she didn't know, but now that it had been asked, she suddenly realized she did know, she just didn't want to admit it.
She looked at Missy, meeting her eyes, "Yes."
Missy nodded, as if she had known all along.
Penny quickly hurried on, "But I am married to Sheldon and I love him as well." She paused, "And I know Leonard loves you too."
Missy looked down, "I know, but I need to figure out if I am willing to continue with Leonard knowing what we all know. We both need to be sure."
Penny wanted to say something but knew it had all been said. She needed to be alone, to think about the ramifications of all that had happened. She knew she had some decisions to make. She was scared to death of what those decisions could mean. Missy had made it impossible for everyone to now not face up to what they all knew.
After Missy left, Penny went out to the living room and sat down next to Sheldon. He paused the TV and turned toward her.
"You look upset. Did Missy say something to bother you?"
Penny sighed, "She told me that she and Leonard have decided to split up for a while."
Sheldon absorbed that. After thinking for a few minutes, "Did she say why?"
Penny sighed, she wondered how much she should say. Finally, she decided it was time to bring everything out in the open.
"She has been bothered ever since that other Leonard was here." She hesitated, "She said she has had a lot of things she thought she had put behind her have come back."
Sheldon then stunned her by saying, "You mean about you and Leonard?"
Seeing the look on her face, he continued, "Come, Penny, we all know that a large reason we got together was because Leonard got with Missy. I love you and I know you love me, but we have always known that you and Leonard never stopped loving each other."
"Because we were all friends, we convinced ourselves it would be okay, that it would work out. And it was working until that other Leonard forced us to realize we had never really put it all behind us."
He hesitated, "And now as they say, Missy has 'forced the issue'."
Penny smiled sadly and nodded, "So what do we do now?"
"You and I need to talk to Leonard."
He hesitated, "There is something else. I want you to get with Amy Farrah-Fowler."
Penny, surprised, asked, "Why do you want me to do that?"
"I convinced myself I checked on her just because of the fact that I was married to her in the other universe, but I realize now I was intrigued to see what kind of woman would elicit such feelings in me. The more I learned about her and especially now that I have met her, I find myself wanting to know more about her."
Penny smiled, "Sheldon, do you like Amy?"
He sighed, "Yes, Penny, I like Amy."
"Why do you want me to talk to her, shouldn't you do that?"
"I will. But first I need to know if she reciprocates my feelings at all. Since I am married, she would of course be hesitant about talking with me. As my wife, you can better explain the situation."
Penny looked over at Amy. She still couldn't believe she had let Sheldon talk her into this. After getting them each a glass of wine, she wondered how to start.
"Amy, I was wondering, what do you think about all this?"
Amy was surprised, she pondered what Penny had said. She was wondering what she was getting at. Finally she said, "What do you mean?"
"You asked me how I felt about having been married to Leonard in that other universe. How about you and Sheldon?"
Amy was caught off guard. She found herself beginning to be nervous. What was going on? Was Penny implying she was interested in her husband? The problem was she had discovered she was intrigued by the fact she had been married to Sheldon in the other universe.
Finally, she decided to face it head on, "Are you asking me if I have interest in Doctor Cooper?"
"Do you?"
"Will you tell me about you and Leonard?"
Now it was Penny's turn to have to sit back. She realized that she had a big decision to make. Should she go forward and lay it all out there or step back. She could sense that if she did go forward, there would be no turning back. Then she realized she had already made that decision. In talking to Sheldon and Missy, she had come to know that everything had changed.
"Before I answer, you should know that Missy and Leonard have decided to split up at least for a time."
Seeing Amy absorbing that, she continued, "Missy initiated it because it she felt that there was still something between me and Leonard, that we still had strong feelings for each other."
Amy looked at her, "Do you? Do you still have feelings for Leonard?"
"Yes."
Amy sat back, "And Sheldon?"
Penny sighed, "I still love him. But I realize that we got together because of Leonard and I breaking up and Leonard getting with Missy. I love him more as a friend. I think I have always known that it is Leonard I truly love. We all thought this had all been buried but what happened to Leonard has made us rethink everything."
In the silence that followed, each thought about what this all meant. Finally, Penny said, "Now, can I ask you about you and Sheldon?"
Amy went to take a drink and found her glass was empty. She poured herself a new glass and took a big gulp, trying to gather her thoughts.
"From the time I was a little girl, my mother had instilled in me the belief that I was different, that I was special because I was so smart. I came to realize she also made me feel that no man was worthy of me, that I was above such things as lust and sex. I think part of it was her unhappiness with her own life. She felt trapped in her marriage and took it out on me and my Dad."
"The other night, when you guys told me the story and I met Sheldon, I was stunned to realize that I was feeling things I had never really felt before. The idea that someone, even in a different universe, had fallen in love with me, wanted me, had married me and were apparently happy, was exciting. I was also almost overcome when I realized I was attracted to Sheldon. When he said he wanted to see me later, to talk to me, it made me happy. But at the same time, I was afraid of what I was feeling because he was married to you."
Penny had to smile to herself, they had been right about her. "When I talked to Sheldon about Leonard and I, he admitted that he was intrigued by you as well. That it was more than just idle interest that he researched you."
She smiled, "And both Leonard and I were shocked when he said he was interested in your work and wanted to discuss it with you. Believe me, that was more than unusual for Sheldon."
She took a gulp of her wine, "I know he is interested in you too."
After some moments of silence as they both came to terms with what had been said, Penny spoke up, "I think you need to talk to Sheldon."
Still a little shocked at what had transpired, Amy quickly agreed.
