Chapter 15 – Family Day
-:-:-
Family day went off without a hitch that time around.
Mostly because the VKs had actually integrated into Auradon Prep by this point, and had by some miracle actually made friends with people beyond the core group that met in Chad and Ben's suite on the regular. Mal and Gil had friends from art class and the pirates were friends with the sailing team and Jay had the Tourney team and Carlos had the robotics team and Evie had anyone she talked to, save for those jealous of her position as Chad's girlfriend.
They had a plan to keep things from getting awkward too, which left each of the Auradon kids claiming a couple of VKs to share their families with so no one would get left out. Chad himself had Gil and Dizzy, of course, so Ben had Evie and Mal (finally). Carlos actually ended up with Doug while Jane claimed Harry, who spent the entire time talking to Fairy Godmother wearing a furious blush for whatever reason, something that intensified anytime he looked at Jane, her long curls spilling down her back and shyness completely abandoned so she could comfortably hook her arm through the first mate's. That left Jay and Uma with Aziz, and Chad had worried that Jay might be worried about the arrangement until he realized that Jay and Aziz had weekly video chats with Aziz's parents specifically to reiterate the distinct division between Jay and his father.
"They're actually super cool," Jay admitted with a flush that made Aziz preen. "Lord Aladdin said I might be able to join one of their weekend adventures sometime? I understand if it never happens-"
"It's gonna happen," Aziz insisted, his brow set in a determined slant. "We're gonna have adventures and you're going to use your magic and no one is going to be scared of you because you are not your dad."
"Gross, Aziz," Jay complained, referring to the prince's mushy nature, though the next moment still found Aziz dragged into Jay's lap with a squawk, Jay tilting their foreheads together for a moment before pulling the prince into a kiss that could only be described as soft.
Mal didn't even catcall it, the half-Fae letting them have their moment while she and Uma exchanged high fives for some reason.
This world really was a crazy one.
Uma seemed to get along with Sultana Jasmine as well, always one to appreciate a strong female leader, so she was happy to stand by a bashful Jay as they watched Aziz head the acapella group's performance of 'Be Our Guest', Lonnie singing happily beside him because apparently Doug was too shy in this world to sing in public, even if he was really good at it.
"That could have been you," Ben rumbled as he hooked an arm around Chad's neck, nuzzling the blue cap Dizzy had knitted for Chad.
It had cat ears. Chad loved it a lot.
"Aziz does it better," Chad assured him with a flush.
"He certainly does it enthusiastically," Mal said before loosing a loud cheer, Evie grinning wide beside her.
They toured classrooms, Chad taking his parents (and it was weird, to have his dad so alert and engaged and supportive, weird to have a mom who cooed over Dizzy's projects and made Gil blush with her praise) around to see each of their extracurricular booths before they had to head to see the Tourney exhibition match. Of course, Ben and his dad tended to follow their group with Mal and Evie watching with amused expressions, and while Chad was a bit worried about how his dad might react to seeing his new relationship up close, again, he was nothing but supportive.
"And this is our bowling team photo," Chad explained when they pulled up to the picture wall that showed off all the sports teams. They'd been required to wear matching bowling shirts for the ordeal, and Lumiere had managed to capture exactly one blurred photo before everyone 'styled up' their uniforms, adding their usual accessories to make them look less… well…
"Dumb," Mal informed them without regret. "We looked dumb. We were dumb looking people."
"The belts really help," Evie noted with a giggle before she drifted closer to Queen Snow, the two step sisters trading easy conversation now that they met on the regular.
"I didn't even know this school had a bowling team," Chad's dad said, honestly befuddled, and Chad lost a moment trying not to laugh.
"We sort of threw one together ourselves," he explained. "A nice no-contact, indoor sport."
"Where you can eat nachos while playing," Ben hummed, startling a laugh from his father.
"The nachos are my favorite part!" Dizzy cheered. "Well, and the shoes. And my bright green ball. And the cheering." She trailed off with a thoughtful look. "They are all my favorite parts."
"Those sound like good favorites," Chad's father said, earning a look so pleased from Dizzy Chad's chest couldn't help but flood with warmth.
In light of that, the Tourney exhibition match was sort of an easy victory lap, all of the VKs who were not playing watching together in the stands near their respective parents, and afterwards they were all going out to dinner, courtesy of Chad's father.
"Excited?" Jay asked when they changed into their gear, Chad unable to school the wide smile from his face.
"Yeah," Chad admitted. "I mean, not for the game. Or- the game will be fun, but just um- it's a good day, is all."
"Yeah," Aziz agreed from Chad's other side. "It's been a very good day."
Just having people in the audience rooting for him was somewhat of a novelty, but Chad's father – despite being king of everything – had been to every one of his games in this world. Queen Snow had too. And sometimes they all went out to eat and sometimes King Adam invited them back to Auradon Castle for a sit-down dinner but every time Chad always had someone there to congratulate him afterwards, someone to praise any good plays he'd made, and that'd never happened before.
In the old world, Fairy Godmother would occasionally offer him congratulations on a game well played, but when the other Tourney players drifted off to talk to their parents or friends Chad would be alone, wondering why he'd even bothered to try. He was good at Tourney. It was one of the few things that came naturally to him, and he'd hoped- he'd always hoped, that maybe if he was good enough his dad might come and support him. If he was outstanding, the king would be forced to bear witness.
Instead, it just landed Chad with a few full-ride offers to attend different colleges, and while that was a generosity he couldn't ignore, there was still the fact that he was hopelessly alone.
And now he wasn't anymore, so that was nice.
"Hey, your hair's really coming along," James chirped from across the aisle, grinning at the short, blond locks Chad had managed to accumulate since he'd shaved everything off. "You'll be back to respectable in no time."
"He's already respectable," Carlos muttered, earning a round of laughter from the other guys as they sidetracked to rag on James, who took it with good-natured chuckles.
The exhibition match wasn't unlike practice, except they had an audience and mixed up their teams so they'd be more balanced. It left Jay on Chad's team for once with Carlos, even if Aziz was stuck on the other side, though he tried to go easy on the Agraben since this was, after all, just a fun game. Winning didn't matter as much as some of his teammates seemed to think, causing Chad to get shouldered a bit harder than he normally would have, but he shook it off.
At least until halfway through the second quarter, when he was hit so hard he was sent flying to the ground – which wasn't a surprise when it was Jay or Hero (who never intended to do such things, but even the son of Hercules lost control of his massive strength sometimes, though he was always apologetic afterwards), but this was… Chad didn't even know who, and didn't think much of it when he used his momentum to easily roll to his feet.
Tourney was a rough game by design, but there was a sudden tension in the air that made Chad worried, gasps and startled cries coming from the crowd to his left, though Chad was forced to ignore them when something else caught his attention. Carlos – who hadn't been far from him – seemed to be startling back, the way he used to in the beginning when he was afraid of anyone, and when Chad turned to see what had caught the other teen's attention, he froze when he realized one of the members of the other team was aiming some kind weird-shaped stick at the young De Ville.
Even to Chad's untrained eyes, the whole thing reeked of magic, so he didn't hesitate – he moved, throwing his weight into Carlos' side and tackling him out of the way just as the device went off. Whatever it was caught Chad in the side, causing a sting of brilliant pain to blossom throughout his toros, making him immediately go limp as he collapsed on the ground.
"Chad!" Carlos screamed, loud and panicked. "Jay! Jay!"
"That piece of shit can't help you now," their attacker said, shifting the stick's aim towards Carlos, and there was one moment of profound panic before a red flash of energy caught him in the shoulder and left him collapsing in a clumsy pile on the ground.
Chad shifted his gaze to see Jay holding up a glowing hand behind the other teammate, everyone seeming hopelessly confused, not that it mattered much. Chad could feel his grip on consciousness slipping away, the pain in his chest entirely overwhelming as he felt something distinctly wrong take place inside him. The skin was whole but everything beneath it felt wrong- felt bad, and it was only spreading, his heart seeming to tremble in his chest as his lungs struggled to find air, a distinct wetness building in his throat and spilling onto his tongue – blood.
"Chad? Chad, hold on," Carlos was saying, tears in his eyes as the other Tourney players gathered around, and Chad was distantly aware of Hero pinning someone to the ground in the distance, of people screaming and moving and chaos. "Chad, you have to hold on."
"Step back!" Fairy Godmother said, appearing in a flash of energy, and vaguely, Chad understood that wasn't a thing that should happen because she'd given up magic.
Like, intellectually he knew she was capable of summoning her wand to herself at any moment because it was her wand, but that wasn't a thing she did outside of ceremonies.
And yet, she was still crouching next to him, her wand glowing bright.
"Chadwick, dear, hold on," she said, pressing a hand to his wounded side, her eyes wet with moisture. "Hold on, okay? There was some dark magic in that blow, but we can- I'm going to-"
"Don't panic," a new voice said, and then Genie was with them, shifted into his human form but hands still glowing bright. "Merlin?"
"I've got my wand," the most powerful wizard in Auradon said, because he was there too, likely visiting Arwel for once, which was kind of amazing because his appearances were always sporadic at best.
"Together, then," Fairy Godmother said as Jane arrived, clad in a cheerleading uniform because she'd taken Audrey's spot when the princess had stayed home for school, Queen Rapunzel half a step behind her, already easing strands of her long hair into Chad's hand. "One, two-"
Magic – expertly wielded and guided and merging together as one, and they probably couldn't manage it were there not so many high-level magic users in one place, but they were too experienced to let the energy fly free. Chad felt it hum through his body, felt it sing before it faded away entirely, and he knew without question that whatever had afflicted him was gone now, healed away by their masterful hands.
"That's some shit for the record books," Merlin rasped when they were finished. "That'll teach people to turn away from magic."
"Not the time, my dude," Genie said, sweat building on his brow. "Anyone know what did this?"
"Here," Carlos said, and then he was passing over the weird stick thing their attacker had used. "It feels wrong."
"That's because it is rooted in vile magic," Fairy Godmother hissed, surrounding the stick in a bubble of clear magic before teleporting it away with a flick of her hands. "How he even got a hold of it-"
"This was a planned attack," Queen Rapunzel said, scanning their surroundings. "And I doubt it was relegated to just these two. A larger group is at work here. Whatever your emergency evacuation plan is, we need to do something else. Something they wouldn't expect."
"I think I've got just the right idea," Fairy Godmother said, a certain gleam in her eye.
This was how the entirety of the people at the Tourney field – the participants, supporters, cheerleaders, the band – ended up teleported to the Auradon Castle Grand Ballroom. King Adam immediately had the place put on lockdown – phone signals blocked, media blackout, the full works – while Fairy Godmother and her team of collected magic users scanned over the grounds of Auradon Prep to see if anymore traps had been set.
It turned out, Queen Rapunzel was right. There were two more magic-focused traps on the specific exit routes Chad's father would have taken, and a dozen more spelled to target specific VKs on the planned evacuation paths. There were even some geared towards Ben, which left Chad clinging to the other prince tight, not that the brunette had let Chad out of his sight (or off his lap) since they'd been reunited.
The crowds inside the castle were cleared, though not before two more active plants were located and deftly taken care of by Mal and Uma.
"Disgusting work," Queen Snow muttered from her spot curled next to Chad, holding his hand and cupping his cheek and looking at him with a pained sorrow because she had been so very terrified on his behalf, and that was not including his father, who had to force himself to address his duties when it was obvious he'd rather be with them.
Chad learned as they waited that while that one student had attempted to attack Carlos, another had aimed an attack at the VKs in the stands, drawing the majority's attention. Of course it had failed, because Mal's specialty was shield work – protective spells that could defend her friends – so the spell had merely been absorbed by her magic before Hero had tackled the attacker to the ground. Gil had been forced to hold Ben back when he realized Chad had also been attacked, though King Adam had helped (and also held Chad's father back with Queen Snow, who had also wanted to sprint onto the field, safety procedures be damned).
The evening ended with groups of students and their families being teleported back to Auradon Prep until it was eventually just Chad's core group of friends and their families waiting it out at Auradon Castle.
"We'll need to make a statement," Chad's father said, when the students and their families had been returned to the school with orders to shelter in place as soon as possible. "Could we use your media room, Adam?"
"Of course," Ben's father said, the lot of them moving off while Chad and the others were sequestered to Ben's quarters, but only after every one of them had been looked over by Dr. Potts, the physician to the Auradon royal family and Mrs. Potts' husband.
It wasn't much of a surprise when they all piled into Ben's lounge to watch Chad's parents make a live statement addressing the actions that had occurred on the Tourney field that afternoon, the lot of them clinging to each other like they were afraid one might vanish if they got too far from sight.
"What happened today was an act of terror," Chad's father explained after he'd given a brief rundown of everything that had happened. "It was a targeted attack designed to cripple the new policies the United Council of Sardinia is setting up in regards to the children of the Isle. It is clear that there are still some who would object to the children of convicted criminals living free in Sardinia, but the truth of the matter is that those children have spent a lifetime suffering for crimes they did not commit. Their existence and upbringing is no fault of their own, and no attacks will change my mind on this matter. Our reform programs will proceed as planned, with emergency evacuations for all Isle minors beginning in December. After this, we will work on transitioning the petty criminals back into our society, as well as entirely reforming our current penal system into something that better matches Sardinian ideals. We have taken the easy way out for too long, living in blissful ignorance, believing that those tasked with running the Isle had the best interests of every Sardinian citizen in mind. We know now that is not the case, so together, we must move forward to improve. I realize change can be an intimidating thing, but in this case it is necessary, and together, we can make a Sardinia we are all proud of. A Sardinia where there is no unjust suffering of innocents."
He paused, sharing a look with Queen Snow who had introduced him, with Sultana Jasmine and Duke Ori (also known as Dopey, to the general populous), with Fairy Godmother and King Adam who stood, resolute and supportive.
"Today, those who would stay rooted in the old ways made an intentional attack in an effort to set back the new reforms, but whether I am king or not, the wheels are already in motion. Sardinia will improve no matter what comes our way, and for those that would use dark magic or brute force to get what they desire… I hope you realize the truth of your situation. That in an effort to presumably defend the status quo you hold so dear; you became the one thing you hate most – a villain."
"Holy shit," Mal breathed, nuzzling into Ben's side as she balanced Carlos carefully on her lap, the young De Ville having been passed around to each of the Core Four for reassurance ever since they'd retreated to Auradon Castle. "Your dad really has a way with words."
"Yeah, he does," Chad agreed, and he didn't know why he was surprised by it. His father had once been known as prince charming, and he'd seen the speeches he'd made back before his mother died, it just… the light seemed to go out of his eyes after her loss, and while his father's speeches had still been good, they had nothing on the fire and drive Chad had witnessed after this press conference.
"At least he's on our side," Uma muttered, safely cradled between Harry and Gil, though Aziz was pulled into her lap with an expression that seemed torn between flustered and relieved by her comfort. "Granted, I don't think the Isle kids will believe him until they actually get off, but the fact that he's making grand speeches like that should be at least a small comfort to those who haven't completely lost hope yet. That's something."
"What an awful day," Ben rumbled, burying his lips in the curve of Chad's neck.
"Do you think Dizzy will be alright?" Chad asked Evie, who sighed.
"She's used to the bad stuff," Evie said, the princess curled around Jane's back while Jay held Doug in his lap. "But seeing you go down like that was… hard."
The young Tremaine had succumbed to a panic attack in the chaos, clutching hard to Evie's side, but with the reassurance that Chad really was okay along with the combined powers of Mrs. Potts and Queen Snow, she seemed to be doing better. After getting in a fair amount of cousin cuddles time, she'd been recruited by Mrs. Potts to help make snacks for the surprise castle guests, and after dinner, Chad and his parents had managed to set her down for an early night in one of the guest rooms close to Ben's suite. Ben had even lent her one of the stuffed animals Chad had made him during that experimental sewing phase, and that combined with a nightlight and some warm milk seemed to knock her out for the evening.
"Why did you do that?" Carlos spoke up suddenly, the first since the young De Ville had arrived at Auradon Castle.
He'd been withdrawn since the attacks, keeping silent save for giving the inspectors his statement, but where Chad had read that as Carlos processing things, now he realized the young De Ville had steadily been building like a powder keg until he had no choice to explode.
"Why did you shove me out of the way?" Carlos continued. "You could have died."
"Because if I hadn't, then you might have died," Chad pointed out, not entirely understanding his point.
He'd heard what Fairy Godmother said. If it hadn't been for his defensive enchantments, Chad would have been vaporized instantly because of the wand's dark magic. As it was, he had been grievously wounded, but if Carlos had taken the hit, there would have been nothing for Fairy Godmother to heal. He would have just been gone.
"That wouldn't have fucking mattered," Carlos spat like that was in any way true. "I'm nothing, I'm useless, and you're the future king of Sardinia! You shouldn't waste yourself on me."
"It wouldn't be a waste," Chad said just as Ben started growling, and for a second he was afraid that the other prince was defensive on his behalf, but then he realized that Ben was merely objecting to Carlos' statement the only way he felt capable of in that exact moment.
"You're important," Ben rumbled, reaching a hand forward to cup Carlos' cheek even as the other teen tried to jerk out of his grip. "You're important as anyone else here."
"I'm not," Carlos hissed, only to be cut off by Mal's growled purr.
"Yes, you fucking are," Mal snapped, her eyes blazing a furious shade of green. "Don't you dare believe any of that toxic bullshit Cruella told you. You are mine. You think I would have claimed you if you were useless? You think I would have claimed you if you weren't the most clever, resourceful, and intelligent person at Dragon Prep? You fucking built yourself from the ground up while that monster of a mother tried to rip you apart. You are a survivor, you are beautiful, and you are worth being saved. And yes, you are just as fucking important as Chad, though for the damn record-" She turned with another hiss, reaching out to snag the collar of Chad's shirt before dragging him forward with another strange purr. "Maybe tackle the other fucking guy next time, the one who's attacking you, instead of just taking the damn blow you stupid martyr, because we can't lose you either, okay? You're our glue. We need you just as much as Ben does."
"Mal," Chad said weakly, startled under the wake of her exclamations.
"I will hear no arguments," she hissed, more Fae than human before she drew Chad into a heated kiss he hadn't expected.
Mal was- she was kissing him, and Chad had never really imagined it, could only take in the soft feel of her lips and her determination and feel the wisps of magic bubbling under her skin while Ben just- he watched, and he didn't even seem upset that someone else was kissing Chad the way he normally might have.
"Fuck it," Mal said when she pulled back, rising in a swift motion with Carlos held tight in her arms, her strength enhanced by her magic because that was what being half Fae did to you. "I'm done with words. We will show you how important you to are."
With that, she marched a determined path to the bedroom, Ben hesitating for maybe half a second before he was carrying Chad behind her.
"Ben," Chad said, confused, but the brunette merely leaned down to nuzzle him.
"We need this," Ben murmured, squeezing Chad tight. "We need reassurance that you're still here. We need to give you what affections we can, though we don't want you to be uncomfortable. May we dote on you?"
Ben paused near the side of the bed, waiting for Chad's response while the others followed them into the room. Mal was already getting to work stripping Carlos down on the bed, and Jane had moved to help her, leaving Carlos helplessly flushed in their hold.
"Um- hugs and kisses?" Chad countered, because he wasn't sure if he could do more. Honestly, he'd feel bad if they all tried to sex him up just because he'd almost died. "And cuddles? You and I can do more later, but that's what I can do now."
"We'll take what you give," Ben said, claiming a sweet kiss that Chad couldn't help but sigh into. "We just want you to be comfortable, but know you are cared for."
"I know," Chad said as the brunette settled them down on a couch turned to face the bed, something they had shifted when they came to accidentally receive more private performances in Ben's room than expected.
"I don't think you do," Ben rumbled, seeming unhappy about this. "But we'll try nonetheless."
Before Chad could ask for clarification, Gil and Harry descended upon them along with Aziz and Uma, the others all diverting to the bed.
"Share, please," Gil said, holding his arms open hopefully, and to Chad's surprise Ben easily passed him over, the brunette rumbling Chad's preferred boundaries while they all nodded. "That's good," Gil said when he had settled Chad into his chest, Uma urging Aziz into Chad's vacated spot in Ben's lap before she settled in on top of Harry. "I'm happy with cuddles and kisses."
"Gil-" Chad said, feeling his cheeks flush from his consideration, but then the other blond was kissing him, the moves slightly clumsy but entirely determined, enough to leave Chad happily melting into his side.
"Perfect," Ben rumbled as he watched, a dark blush spilling across the bridge of his nose and eyes half lidded in want as his hands aimlessly traced Aziz's body, the Agraben prince trembling from the attention.
"You can kiss Aziz too, if you want," Chad offered, feeling a little uneasy with their attention, something he was getting despite the enthusiastic show taking place on the bed – Mal biting up Carlos' torso while Jane claimed his lips and Evie coached Doug through mouthing at Carlos' length, running an encouraging hand down the dwarf kin's back while Jay snuck a clever hand underneath Carlos' rear and seemed to be doing something there that left Carlos moaning brokenly.
"You can do a lot of things to Aziz, Ben," Uma murmured over Aziz's tight whimper. "He certainly has enough fantasies about it."
"You do, do you?" Ben asked, tilting Aziz's head back so he could bury his lips in the hollow of his throat. "Want to tell me about them? Or shall I discover them for myself?"
"Ben," Aziz whined, shifting with an uneasy gasp.
"Look for yourself," Uma advised. "But know that he had a crush on you before you mixed up your style."
"Uma," Aziz said, wounded, as though he'd been betrayed.
Though that didn't seem necessary with the way Ben perked up. "I liked you too, Aziz," he murmured. "You and Chad both."
Aw, that was nice. It was cool to see Ben and Aziz finally connect in a way they probably hadn't back in their world. It was enough to leave Chad comfortably melting against Gil's chest, happy to watch Ben strip Aziz out of the comfy clothes he had changed into earlier.
"Yesss," Uma cheered as the Agraben started whimpering up a storm. "This is perfect."
"Would ye like something, captain?" Harry asked, his cheeks dusted in a flush.
"Sure," Uma countered. "You could climb into my lap and make a mess in your pants so Aziz doesn't feel so self-conscious."
"Captain," Harry croaked, but he still did as ordered, bashfully settling in the V of her legs at letting out low moans when she began to fondle him through the material of his pants.
"Kisses?" Gil asked, looking at Chad hopefully, and with an expression like that, how could Chad not oblige him?
Besides, it was nice kissing Gil. It was nice kissing any of them, really, and he got a chance to do it with all of them, Ben waiting until Aziz was almost ready to fall apart before he had the Agraben lean over and trade whimpered kisses. Chad got Harry after he'd made a mess of himself, the blond prince transferred into his lap to trade kisses as a sort of reward, until at last he was claimed by Uma, who took her time, cradling his face between her hands before moving in, nice and slow.
All the while, they never let up on the bed. Chad wasn't sure how many times Carlos had fallen apart, but he was almost certain Mal had spelled him to have the stamina he'd need to outlast all of them. It was what gifted them to watch both Jay and Doug fuck Carlos in turn, Jay pressing him back against the mattress as he rutted into his warm heat, Carlos clutching desperately to his shoulders while he rode Doug, the musician flat on his back while Mal coaxed Carlos onto his length, working Carlos up and down while he brokenly moaned.
He fucked Jane with open wonder, Evie trying to coach him through it while Jay teased a hand between her legs, Doug bashfully doing the same with Mal who took it with much more relish.
By the time they were done, Chad was grateful that someone in Ben's life had the forethought to arm the prince with a bounty of condoms and lubricant, because otherwise this would have been entirely more harrowing.
"So," Mal panted when they were done, grinning over to the pile over on the couch with a wicked smirk. "Want to trade? We cuddle Chad while you rock Carlos' world?"
"Fuck yes," Uma said, already nudging Harry to his feet.
"Um," Aziz said. "I don't think-"
"Get on the bed, Aziz," Ben, of all people, rumbled, the brunette carrying the naked Agraben over towards the bed before more or less shoving him on top of Carlos, pressing their bare bodies together with resounding flushes that were very pretty to witness indeed.
"Atta boy, Ben," Mal said, trading a high five with him before shimmying back into her own clothes, slipping into the dress Evie had made her haphazardly before she deftly stole Chad off Uma's lap and cuddled him close. "Have fun, Uma."
For her part, the captain mostly grinned bright. "Will do, Bertha."
"Hello," Jay said as he plopped down beside Mal, dragging Jane into his lap with a grin while Evie settled with Doug. "You okay?"
"I'm great," Chad admitted, happily cuddling against Mal's shoulder. "You guys don't mind the break?"
And not doing sex stuff, which was what he meant, even if he didn't ask it.
"Not at all," Evie breathed. "We're all down for cuddles and kisses."
"Let's start with the kisses," Mal declared, and then she was claiming Chad's lips once more. This time though, Chad was ready for it, and he felt a bit more worthy of her attentions, mostly because Mal did not do things she didn't want to do.
So this was fine, Chad was sure.
At least for the moment.
